USHERS & GREETERS ARE IMPORTANT By Pastor George

How important is the person you meet at the door when you enter the sanctuary for worship? Most would agree that the first face you see is an important face at any gathering. The person who meets and greets is extremely important. For example, go to the Fox Theater, a Cardinals Baseball Game or even to Wal-Mart, and you will see the emphasis placed on ushers/greeters.

In the church, we should never minimize the role of the greeter/usher. Research shows that worship guests typically make up their minds in the first 8-12 minutes if they are going to return. This is long before the pastor’s message and usually even before any worshipful singing.

From the ease of parking to the way they are welcomed at the door and at the pew, many choose their places of worship largely by how they feel about the people who receive them. Now, we all play an important role in welcoming those around us before worship as well as during the time of greeting and even following worship; but, there is a very important role being carried out by those serving as greeters and ushers.

At St. Paul’s we are putting an added emphasis on greeting people, ALL people. Be one a first time guest or long time member, we believe every worshipper should be welcomed and greeted with a smile. We are presently expanding the role of those who usher and greet to include 30 minutes before worship and thanking worshipers at the door when they depart.

Lastly, we are in the process of adding directional signage to hallways and classrooms to better guide members and guests to their desired destination. As you think of other ways to better greet and welcome worshippers, please let me know. If you are interested in helping to expand our “welcoming impact”, please see Larry Brewe or a Welcome Center attendant. Together, let’s set a positive for all worshippers!

150th Anniversary Committee Update By Amy Lange

The committee has had a couple of meetings and is beginning to come up with ideas for our celebration. Several issues have come up that we are working on, but would like to have the congregation’s input on a rather large one. Several churches in the surrounding area have published a book with church records and we are currently looking into doing something similar.

We would like the congregation’s input on a privacy issue with publishing records in this type of book. We would like the input from the church before we look into consulting legal advice on this issue to protect the church. Some of the books published the birth dates, baptism dates, confirmation dates and death dates of all the church members in these books and we would like to know if you agree or disagree with publishing this information. We may also want families to submit a summary of their history with the church that may be included in the book or used throughout the upcoming celebrations. More information on the family histories will be forthcoming, but we wanted to get people thinking about what they might want to write. We have set up an e-mail address for the committee for you to share your thoughts on this privacy issue as well as any other suggestions or ideas you may have. The e-mail address is [email protected]. Please let us know what you think about publishing the records.

Active & Inactive Members St. Paul’s Church Council is currently reviewing and updating the church membership list. This includes both active and inactive members. We realize that circumstances often change. People relocate, become involved with other churches or sometimes simply drift away from their home church. If this resembles your situation and you no longer wish to continue as a member of St. Paul’s we encourage you to contact a church council representative or Pastor George and express your decision. We are available should you have concerns and wish to talk with us about them. If you have joined another church please let us know so our records may reflect this transfer. Regardless of your decision we offer our assurance that you are welcome at St. Paul’s and hope wherever you are in life you will experience the love of God and the spiritual support of a church family.

Teen Summer Workcamp Week of Hope in St Louis

June 17-22 Who knew that in 1804, when Lewis and Clark set out from St. Louis to explore the American West and bring hope of a new beginning to the people of the area, that today this area would be in need of hope again? You can serve the people of St. Louis by exploring your faith and bringing hope of another new beginning. You have the chance to brighten people's futures and explore a variety of community service projects for those who really need you. Communicate interest to PG. For complete details, visit www.groupworkcamps.com/register/camp-details?CampCode=12MO11. (NOTE: with gas prices predicted to soar, we are staying close to home for this summer’s mission trip to better utilize Youth Ministry Funds. This Week of Hope will include a total of 99 youth from around the country coming to St. Louis to serve God and His people alongside you and others. Be sure to register and get your $50 deposit in early as four other “weeks of hope” have already filled up for the summer and if we need extra spaces we will need to request them ASAP. Twelve spaces have already been guaranteed!)

of the sanctuary is placed there by persons in honor of, or in remembrance of, loved ones. It could be for a birth, graduation, baptism,

anniversary, birthday, etc. On the lobby table there is a Sign-Up Sheet/Calendar labeled

March Extra Step - One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) OGHS is the special mission offering that seeks to carry God's message of love and hope to people in more than eighty countries. The UCC works with international partners to provide sources of clean water and food, education and health care, small business micro -credit, emergency relief, and advocacy and resettlement for refugees and displaced persons. OGHS also supports domestic and international ministries for disaster preparedness and response. More than 60 percent of the UCC's offering supports international development initiatives, including annual support for approximately six missionaries working in health care, education, and agricultural development. Nearly one -third of the UCC's offering is shared through Church World Service to support refugee, disaster, development, and advocacy programs. For over 60 years, Church World Service has worked in partnership with local communities to identify their needs and access the resources they need to build the foundation for a more viable future, including: Blankets, tents, food and other emergency supplies in the wake of a disaster; Tools and seeds for refugees returning home to replant their fields; Wells for families living in drought prone areas to provide clean, safe water to drink and to irrigate crops and gardens; Literacy training and microcredit for women struggling to realize their potential. Giving to OGHS is one of our ways we at St. Paul’s UCC reach out to neighbors in need near and far.

Please make checks payable to “St. Paul’s Church” with OGHS in the memo.
