Virginia Synod News The Virginia Lutheran, which is the

Virginia Synod's newsletter, is available online anytime at www.vasynod.org.

Are you interested in joining our

St Luke family?

If you have enjoyed worshiping with us so far this year and are contemplating becoming a member, we would love to hear from you! Please contact Rev. Fred Marcoux, our pastor; Tammy, the church administrator; or any member of our Evangelism committee for more information. If you would like to meet with Pastor Fred, please call or email the office at 272-0486 or [email protected] to schedule an appointment.

A Note from Pastor Fred

Behold!

I Make all Things New!

So said the Lord God of Israel! Kind of a contradiction to what most churches who are

uncomfortable with changes of any kind.

However, I have found that here at St Luke we are willing to give most new things a

try. As I sit here on August 18, two of our members are at a seminar to investigate a

new Sunday School program and bring it to the education committee and see if it is

something NEW that we can work with. We are on our way in planning a young

couples and parents group to meet together, get to know each other and let us know

what they would like to see in our congregation life together; also something NEW.

As many of you know, our mortgage is now paid in full. Hurrah!

The church council has recommended that we take those monthly mortgage payments,

accrue them for a year and replace our aging shingle room with a NEW one. The brick

plaza in front of the church will be replanted with NEW trees. A NEW dishwasher has

replaced the aging one in the kitchen.

On Sunday, October 29 we will celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation

with special music, a catered luncheon, rededicate our church and burn the mortgage.

In so many ways St. Luke is poised upon a new era with new hope remembering what

God spoke of old:

Behold! I Make All things New!

In Peace,

Pastor Fred

Pastor Fred’s returns to his regular schedule on Sept 13th:

Wednesdays 9:30am to 2:30pm.

Please call the church office at 804-272-0486

if you would like to schedule an appointment.

Pastor’s email address is: [email protected].

Pastor Fred’s Mid-week Bible Study resumes September13, 2017

Pastor Fred is resuming the Mid-week scripture discussion beginning Wednesday morning, September 13th from 10:30am - 11:30am. He will continue using a variety of study methods so we can delve into the text to discover new insights in how the words speak over the centuries and into our own time. There is no need to bring a Bible - we have plenty here to work with. Classes will continue every week at 10:30am on Wednesday mornings. Please come out and join us!!

SUMMER MUSIC CAMP

Twenty-one children from 4 – 14 participated in the first St. Luke Summer Music

Camp. Rich and Luci Hughes-Barnett led the campers through five full days of

rehearsal and then presented the bible-based musical show “Malice in the Palace”

on Friday, July 21st.

Many thanks to all who assisted with our first Summer Music Camp and to the many

folks who came to the performance. Special thanks to Suzie Weeks, Barbara Kipps,

Ann & Marty Witthoefft, Tim Hesson, Tammy Hammond and Pastor Fred for their

support.

CHOIR NEWS

Come by and see the freshly painted, cleaned and organized music rehearsal room!

Adult Chancel Choir rehearsals will resume 7:30 pm Thursday, August 31st. All

are welcome! Handbell rehearsals resume 6:30 pm Thursday, September 7th.

Come ring with us!

COMMUNION MEDITATIONS

Currently, each Sunday the choir performs an anthem before the Pastor’s sermon.

Beginning in September the choir will also perform a meditation after communion.

The meditation will usually be a piece of music that eventually be sung by the

congregation. It is hoped that exposing the congregation to new music in this way

will build our capacity for new ways of singing and worshipping together.

YOUTH RECITALS

A great form of outreach to the community is the many youth instrumental recitals

held at St. Luke’s. Our lovely sanctuary, wonderful piano, and comfortable seats

make for an excellent concert venue. Please come hear talented youth play away!

UPCOMING CONCERTS

In this newsletter you will find information concerning the excellent PALEY

Concert Series. Please also see information on a concert of GUITAR MUSIC

by Peter Griggs on Sunday, October 8th at 4:00 pm.

St. Luke to help with Southampton Elementary School’s

“Back to School” Project

An outreach ministry of Richmond Hill, the Micah Initiative is

a faith community partnership program serving Richmond Public

Elementary Schools. Volunteers typically serve as weekly tutors,

mentors, classroom assistants, and lunch buddies.

St. Luke has been a Micah partner at Southampton Elementary School

for many years. The school is located at 3333 Cheverly Road, 23225.

St. Luke usually participates in Southampton’s “Back to School” project.

In the past, we have had a “Backpack” project for them. This year they

are asking for help with school supplies for the children. This is a very

worthwhile project that can easily benefit many children as they start the

new school year.

Look for a complete list of the supplies needed and a collection

box in the narthex. If you would like to make a donation instead,

please make your check out to St. Luke Lutheran Church with

“Southampton School supplies” in the memo line. By making a

donation, their teachers can purchase supplies needed for the

classroom.

Thank you for your participation.

Would you like to be part of our Worship Service?

Sunday Worship services are a very important part of our church life here at St. Luke. Every Sunday, our church members participate in our worship service as Acolytes, Assisting Ministers, Crucifers and Ushers. We also have Altar Guild members who set up for Sunday services, Altar Bread Bakers, Chancel Choir members, Bell Choir members, Musicians and many other Committee Members who serve the Lord and St. Luke by providing their time, talents and energy.

If you are interested in serving and would like more information about these or other opportunities to be a part of our Worship Ministry, we would love to hear from you.

Please contact Pastor Fred Marcoux or Vince Reedinger for more information. You’ll be glad you did!

Flower Dedications

The Ministry of flowers is an important part of the

Sunday Service at St. Luke Lutheran. Flowers are

used to beautify our sanctuary and are a gift to God

and those who attend worship services.

Altar flowers may be dedicated to “The Glory of

God”, “In Memory of” a loved one or “In Honor

of” a special person, an anniversary, birthday,

birth, baptism or other special event. More than

one person may find a certain date important so flowers may be

given in more than one name on any given Sunday.

If you would like to donate and dedicate flowers for any Sunday

service, arrangements cost $27.00 each. You will be billed directly

from Coleman Brothers Flowers and the flowers will be delivered

to the church. The flowers are yours to take home after the service

that Sunday or you can ask that they be taken to one of our ill or

homebound members. Please sign up on the flower chart located in

the fellowship hall.

Please contact the church office or Jean Stewart if you have any

questions. Thank you.

Do you have something for the Newsletter?

The October 2017 Newsletter Deadline is Sept. 20. Please call in or e-mail in your submissions with your all of your September meeting dates and notices to Tammy in the church office as soon as possible. Thanks! 804-272-0486, [email protected].

Our condolences and heartfelt sympathy go out

to the family of Henry Walker, beloved husband

of Betty Walker. Henry passed away to the Lord

on August 21, 2017. His Memorial Service was

held August 16, 2017 at St. Luke. Pastor Fred

conducted the service.

Please remember Betty and the Walker family in your thoughts and

prayers during this difficult time.

2017 Flower Calendar

The 2017 Flower Calendar is op in the fellowship hall. To those of you who give flowers every year during the same time frame, thank you. If you’re new to St. Luke or haven’t signed up yet to provide Sunday altar flowers, won’t you consider doing so ? Flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday. If your date seems to be taken, please sign up anyway or call the church office to do so. If you would like more information about our Flower Calendar or if you have any questions about Altar Flowers, please contact Tammy in the church office at 804-272-0486 or [email protected]. You can also contact Jean Stewart, our sacristan, at 804-276-2690. Thank you.

2018 ST. LUKE LUTHERAN CONGREGATIONAL COUNCIL ELECTIONS

The 2018 Congregation Council elections will be held in October 1, 2017. Our church bylaws allow open nominations from the congregation during the final three Sundays leading up to the election. During this period, these nominations are to be added to the list of candidates developed by the nominating committee.

If you would like to serve, or if you would like to nominate someone to serve, this is the time to get your name, or their name, on the candidates list. Please note, permission must be obtained from the nominee before you submit their name. Names cannot be added to the ballot on election day.

If you’d like to nominate someone, once their permission is obtained, please contact Kay Wason, our Council Vice President, and she will send additional information about Council responsibilities, information and expectations to them. Once she confirms that they agree to serve if elected, Kay will also obtain "bio" information from them to share with the congregation.

Once permission is obtained, please fill out the nomination form below or located in the narthex and give it to Kay. If you have any questions, please contact Kay or Sim Austin, President, for more info. Kay: [email protected], 804-323-4125 OR Sim: [email protected], 804-748-2605

RISE AGAINST HUNGER PROJECT UPDATE

$5889.00

We were planning to pack 13,000 meals for our “God’s Work, Our Hands”

project, but we have way surpassed our original goal of $3500.00.

The response has been awesome, and now we have raised $5889.00!!!!!

We will unite with “Rise Against Hunger” (formerly Stop Hunger Now) once again to make meals for

the hungry throughout the world on Saturday, September 9th from 9:30am to 11:30am.

We need more packers! We have 56 people signed up so far to help us pack the meals. Can you help?

Please speak with Marty Witthoefft if you’d like to participate in our meal packing project. You can also

email him at [email protected].

If you haven’t made a donation to our project yet but would like to do so, please make your check out to

St. Luke Lutheran Church with “Rise Against Hunger” on the memo line.

As we go into the world and care for those who do not have their “daily bread” we also tell the wonderful

love and life in Jesus Christ.

We are fulfilling Jesus command to go into all the world and tell the Good News of Jesus Christ to every-

one!

Thank you to everyone who has helped in the past and thank you to this year’s volunteers.

St. Luke member’s are the best!

RALLY DAY RECEPTION

September 10, 2017

Following the service

We’re gonna party like it’s......2017?

Yes it is. Almost Fall 2017. So, can you help us with the food?

A wonderful fellowship reception is planned following our Rally Day Special Worship Service

on Sunday, September 10 at 11:00am. We say hello to our teachers and celebrate the work they

do with our children. (No Sunday School until September 17) Certain finger foods are needed

to share. We will provide drinks.

Our planned menu is as follows: Sliced ham and turkey on rolls or mini croissants, fresh cut

fruit for trays, fresh cut veggies for trays, assorted cubed cheeses and assorted crackers for

trays, assorted cookies and brownies. Sounds yummy!

Please sign up below with which items you can bring and turn the form into the office.

Sign-up sheets are also available in the Narthex.

Please call Tammy in the church office at 804-272-0486 if you like or email her at

[email protected]. Thank you for your assistance.

THANK YOU

Thanks to you all, we have donated a lot of food to FeedMore so far this year. We also thank you for your donations to the “Rise Against Hunger” project. We have raised over $5889.00 this year to participate in this wonderful program. Our gifts will make a difference for families and communities in need. We have also donated many bags of clothing to Good Samaritan Ministries during the summer. Your donations of clothing, shoes, books and toys are welcome at any time. Please place these items in the first closet in the Youth Room. Food items can be placed in the food box in the narthex or fellowship hall. These items will be delivered to the FeedMore, formerly known as the Central Virginia Food Bank. Thank you for your continued support of our Outreach Ministry. We couldn’t do it without you!

St. Luke Outreach Committee

Pastor Fred is online and on DVD! Pastor Fred's Sunday sermons are recorded on DVDs. Each DVD disc has a month of sermons and Gospel readings. Please contact the church office or a church member for more information. We do have donated DVD players if you don’t have one available for viewing these discs.
