The St Faithian Spring Term 23 February 2018
Friends of St Faith’s We hope you all had a good half term! We would like to thank everyone that helped out with the cake sale on the Friday before half term, which helped us raise just over £70! The next meeting of the Friends is on Monday 26th February (next week), at the school, where we will be discussing the Easter events and Summer barn dance among other fundraising extravaganzas, so please feel free to come and join us if you fancy joining our friendly group. The meeting normally starts at 8am, after pick up, but those who drop off later are also welcome to join when they can. Please sign in at reception, who will be able to advise you on where the meeting is if you haven’t been
before. Many thanks and have a great weekend! [email protected]
The Paddock Many of you may never have ventured through the gate at the bottom of the car park but, at the end of the hawthorn walkway we have the most wonderful open space. The ‘Paddock’, as it is currently known, is a favourite spot of the teachers and, in the coming terms, we are redeveloping this area to promote it as a habitat for local wildlife. We are aiming to create an area we can utilise when studying the habitats topic in Science. We’re planning on installing bug hotels, mud kitchens, flowers to attract butterflies and an area for growing vegetables. We also want to make it a place that will capture our children’s imagination. Our first step has been to build a willow igloo. Andy Chapman of C & W Groundcare (and husband to St Faith’s Jo Chapman) kindly allowed the children in Year 4 to help with the installation. The children loved getting their hands dirty. “This is the best thing I’ve done today!” quipped George, as he tied the final bit of willow with twine. Next year, we are hoping to harvest some of the shoots from the igloo and use them to create a willow walkway. Watch out for more developments from this exciting development in the coming weeks!
Head’s Corner
With summer just around the corner and the daffodils and snowdrops showing their buds we now have to brace ourselves for the severe wintery weather which is expected early next week. Please could you make sure you all send our children into school with coats, scarves and gloves in preparation. Please also make yourself aware of the bad weather procedure, which was emailed to all parents on the 6th February and check the website ‘Stories from St Faith’s’ on Homepage right-hand side, and Facebook. Thank you.
Sport Report U10 Netball vs Wellesley House On a beautiful sunny afternoon, the U10 Girls team hosted Wellesley House for a return fixture. In the first away match the girls had managed to win after playing really well and were clinical with their finishing. They played well once again but couldn’t quite find the goals required to win on this occasion. In a very competitive and enjoyable match, the final score was 1-1. Player of the match went to Georgina D. Well played girls! U9AB Netball vs Lorenden Prep School On a sunny but chilly afternoon, the U9 girls travelled to Lorenden Prep School for their next matches. Lorenden have been strong opposition in recent years and proved so again. The 1st Team were 5-2 behind at half-time but demonstrated a ‘never-give-up attitude’ and managed to get back into the match. The final score in a good contest was 8-8. The Development Team also had an opportunity to play and many enjoyed the experience of playing in their first match. On this occasion they did not come away with the win. but they all enjoyed their afternoon of Netball. Players of the match went to Genevieve and Jessica. Well played, girls!
Reception Who knew that making pizza could develop our mathematical knowledge and understanding of symmetry? This week Reception embraced a taste of Italy without even leaving the classroom. We worked collaboratively with our partners to weigh, chop, grate, spread and arrange our toppings whilst listening to some ‘Pavarotti’ to get us all in the mood! After careful discussion to ensure that our pizzas looked Symmetrical, our bouncy bunch of budding ‘Gino’s’ decided they looked good enough to eat! “Wait” declared Harry, “we need to put them in the oven first!” Fantastico Chef Paul came to the rescue yet again and kindly cooked our pizzas for us to all enjoy as a special tasty treat in the afternoon.
Our inspired learners expressed their thanks by saying ‘grazie’ then dining by the stunning views of Venice! Early Years — Nursery and Reception — Tapestry Recently Nursery and Reception parents ‘came back to school’ to learn more about our new online early years learning journal system called Tapestry. Our parents are now able to access photographs, videos and observations of activities that their children have undertaken throughout the school day. They can also comment on what they have seen and read. This has been an exciting adventure for us as a department and we would like to thank the parents for all their support, feedback and positive comments.
That looks REALLY old! As part of their History studies, Year 1 have been thinking about how life has changed over the last 100 years. The children had great fun investigating the toys their teachers used to play with. All of the children agreed that some of the teddies looked really old (which in turn made their teachers feel really old!) A real favourite was the string-puppet belonging to Mrs Rosenz with children making requests for the puppet to dance, jump and clap its hands. As well as the toys, the children were amazed at how cameras and computer consoles have changed. They really enjoyed finding out about these ‘olden days’ objects.
Finally, the session looked at some rather unusual objects. The children were encouraged to have a good look at the objects and consider what they might do. Do you know what this is? The children’s guesses included a knitting machine, a sock maker and a printer. The answer … it’s a tie press!

Table Tennis Lunchtime clubs for Year 2 are well underway again. With the weather getting better Mrs Latham has purchased some new table tennis bats for the Thursday lunchtime club. This club is quite popular as the children really want to beat Mr Groves when they go into Year 3! We might even invite Mr Groves to come to our club in the summer. Hope you have enough 'golden
balls', Mr Groves! Year 2 are on your heels!
