The SPIRIT The SPIRIT KARA — community volunteers working on behalf of Kleinburg, Nashville, Purpleville & area residents

Over 15 years ago we were look-ing for the perfect community to raise our 2 young children. Both my husband and I felt strongly that not only our immedi-ate family and friends were critical in forming the type of people our children were going to become but also the community we lived in played an equally important role in creating that whole adult person. Being very idealistic, we created an extensive list to help us find the perfect home and community. After over a year of searching, we settled in Kleinburg and for so many rea-sons. We wanted an established com-munity with a healthy mix of ages. This undertaking involved many drives through multiple neighbour-hoods looking for not only neat yards (empty nesters) but also homes that showed signs of active young imaginations (children who enjoyed playing outside). We felt the long time residents in the community would provide all of us with an understanding of the history but also the importance of community. Growing families are important in maintaining the vitality of the neighbourhood. It was also important that our children attend a school that was small enough that it embodied that same strong sense of community and also provided the students many opportunities for personal growth. Kleinburg Public School was a perfect match. We wanted green space around us. The McMichael and Binder

take an active role in the community. There was a piece of Kleinburg miss-ing while the school was being re-built. Binder Twine gives back in so many ways but asks the community for so little. Over the years the funds raised during the festival have finan-cially supported many of our com-

munity-based organizations, fami-lies in need, our schools, post sec-ondary scholarships, Queen con-test winners, Victoria Day fire-works and the annual winter party. Has the community changed over the fifteen years that we have lived here? There is no question that Kleinburg has prospered and grown. Will this affect the small community built by a dynamic group of volunteers? I hope it will be strengthened. As the community grows it is

important for us to not lose sight of the strong foundation that was cre-ated for us and the responsibility we now have as residents to nurture this for our children and future genera-tions. -Submitted by Kleinburg resident, and volunteer Barb Wolff

The SPIRIT www.KARA-Inc.ca

Attention Residents of Kleinburg and Nashville On Saturday, September 8, 2012 the annual Binder Twine Festival will be held on the streets of Kleinburg in the village core. Consequently, road closures will occur as follows:

Islington Avenue from the north entrance to Kleinburg Public School to John Street, from 8:00 AM through 6:00 PM

Nashville Road from the west side of the Doctorʼs House driveway to Islington Avenue, from 8:00AM through 6:00 PM

Kellum Street from Islington Avenue to Napier Street from noon, Friday, September 7 through 6:00 PM Saturday, September 8th.

The map shows other parking restrictions necessary for the Festival to take place. Please note that these are exactly the same provisions re closures/parking restrictions as in the previous several years. What’s Important to You— Here’s What You Told Us Last Month!

Well, we heard from a number of residents and there is no doubt that reducing traffic and curbing development is up-permost in their minds. Whether it’s traffic through the vil-lage making crossing the road to buy a coffee a life-threatening experience, the constant roar of bikes and trucks causing a conversation to become a shouting match or the increasing time taken to simply go to and from work, traffic is an issue. We also heard about improving the facilities, streetscape and appearance of the village. The Pierre Berton Discovery Centre is an important part of this as its creation will also involve renovating the former United Church and provide a meeting place for the community. If the Centre does not go ahead, plans for renovating the Church may be in jeopardy.

Moreover, the dual attraction of the Centre and the McMichael Gallery will help to boost Kleinburg as a destina-tion which in turn will provide an incentive for City and local business to enhance the streetscape. KARA will continue press the City and the region for phased development, protection of the greenbelt, improvements to the road network, including provision of safe pedestrian and cycling corridors and mitigation of consequences such as sound, but this will be a long process. As well, KARA will also urge to City to commit to the building of the Pierre Berton Discovery Centre and the renovation of the Church. Email us at [email protected] if you have other issues that you would like KARA to pursue on your behalf. We’d like to hear from you.

Servicing for the north end of Kleinburg Molise Estates, formerly the Kleinburg Golf Course property, is nearing com-pletion. Work on Stevenson Ave., Coldspring Road, and along Nashville Road is expected to be complete this fall. The interior of the sewage pump station on Stevenson Ave. is complete. Exterior finishing is progressing and is ex-pected to be complete in October. The sewage pipes under the river and up the hill into town are complete. Some ac-cess chambers on either side of the river, and at Stevenson/Nashville have been installed. The sidewalk on the west side of Stevenson is well under way. We expect finishing work (grading and sodding) on Nashville and Stevenson to begin shortly. The final top coat of pavement will be laid in the fall of 2013 or the summer of 2014. Reconfiguration of the intersection on Coldspring Road as well as construction of the sidewalk on Coldspring Road is nearly complete. There is now a four-way stop at the access to the new subdivision. There have been a number of con-cerns raised regarding the placement of the stop signs and

some changes will be made to make them more visible. There is still some grading and sodding to do. Again the final top coat of pavement will be done in 1 to 2 years. Registration of the final subdivision plans and servicing of the 69 lots on the north end is expected to be complete in a month. Building permits can then begin, and construction of homes could begin by the end of the year. A number of properties are available through Greenpark Homes' Kleinburg Heights devel-opment. A number of others are available to individual custom builders. Strict architectural controls are in place as well as condi-tions to have substantial completion of the exterior within 3 years of purchase. There will be a few stone entry features in the new subdivi-sion. An extensive trail system is also being implemented to allow access to the parkland and open space areas. Grading of the lands south of the ravine is also well under-way. Servicing of that property will be done over the winter with paving expected next year.

A special feature on businesses in Kleinburg and Nashville

FOCUS ON:

Tortine & Vanille

FRENCH PASTRIES IN KLEINBURG! Wow! How can we be so lucky? Kleinburg is now the home of a new French pastry shop – Tortine & Vanille, specializing in French macarons and beautiful custom cakes. Located at 10489 Islington Avenue in a quaint pale green décor, the whimsical window already catches your eye! Partners Silvana Colosimo and Gabriella Caruso founded the company earlier this year and have already made a name for themselves among the local residents for their innovative pastries and fresh croissants imported from Paris, France. With their backgrounds in pastry and cake designing, this duo is creating an atmosphere that mimics European flare. Silvana, pastry chef extraordinare, studied at the famous Le Cordon Bleu in Paris while Gabriella, being self-taught in pas-try, studied cakes at Bonnie Gordon college in Toronto. Cer-tainly a combo of talent and creativity that will be admired and enjoyed. Their delicious delights change daily and while Silvana fa-vours the maple walnut bignette, (very Canadiana) Gabriella recommends the salted caramel or passionfruit macaron. Enjoy a cup of coffee, tea or a croissant sandwich as well. Open every day except Mondays and Tuesdays, you may contact the shop at (905) 552-1119 or you may view their scrumptious cakes at www.tortineand vanille.com.

Bob Buckie Retires

from Kleinburg Library

On June 20th, members of the Kleinburg Library Book Chat and Kleinburg Library Tea and Books plus friends joined together to say goodbye to Bob

Buckie our librarian for several years. Bob has been a joy to have as a librarian. He has been both fun and helpful to both clubs and every-one who came to the library. His sense of humour certainly added to the enjoyment of a visit to the library. His knowledge and experience were always a helpful resource. Members and friends brought baked goods, treats and refreshments to the party. This was our time to give back to Bob who always made sure our clubs had our needs and expectations met. To help Bob remember Kleinburg and all of us, Valeria Mravyan, painted a scene of the chapel at the Doctors House. Valeria is a very talented, local artist and this painting of the chapel will certainly be a treasured keepsake. Her paintings are on dis-play in many local businesses and she will have an exhibit at the McMichael Gallery in October. We wish Bob Buckie a very happy and enjoyable retirement wherever that leads. We all hope that he will have a bit of time to visit us on occasion.

Two Local Kleinburg and Nashville Area Events Support Sick Kids!

Kleinburg Area Volunteer Firefighters/Vaughan Fire and Rescue 7th Annual Car Wash took place on Sat-urday July 7th at the Metro shopping plaza. The fire-fighters raised $1500 over the course of the day

under less than ideal weather conditions. The generous dona-tions continued even during the rainy spells. The purpose of this annual event is to raise funds for Sick Kids Foundation. Over

the course of its 7 year history, the firefighters have raised $27,000 for the foundation. A huge thank you goes out to the sponsors of the event, McDonalds, Pizza Nova, Metro, Pizza Pizza, Macs and the many people who stopped to have their car washed or drop a donation into the boot!

This past August we had a young local resi-dent by the name of Claudia Nigro of We-stridge Dr., host a garage sale and donate all of her proceeds to the Hospital for Sick Chil-dren. She and a group of friends and family raised $700.00 from selling regular items around the house, such as books, toys, frames, etc. What is so amazing about this story is that

her grandparents, Antonio and Barbara Adamo, also residents of Vaughan, (along with her parents Ada and Joe Nigro), were all so proud of what their granddaughter was trying to accomplish, that they decided to match her $700.00 and double the donation which amounted to an incredible $1400.00 raised and donated to Sick Kids Hospital. We found this story to be so inspirational that we hoped it would inspire more of our young residents to participate in such fundraising efforts that they believe in and are truly passionate about. Spreading the word, and hav-ing the community come together can only equal successful fundraising for worthy causes!
