Shaheen  :P

LOVE  YOU  SIS  !

OK

Mirza  Muhammad  ,ruler  of  Multan,  A  big  stronghold  of  the  Moghul  Empire,    was  in

the  process  of  being  attacked  by  the  raja    of  Amarkot  who  sent  news  to  Mirza  that

his  army  of  50  000  men  on  foot,  200  war  elephants,  20  000  horsemen  warriors  and

cannons  and  weapons  were  on  a  mission  to  strike  and  kill  everyone  in  the  city.  Raja

made  an  alliance  with  rulers  of  Gujrat  and  some  other  renegade  forces  to  try  and

destroy  the  Moghul  empire    and  had  already  turned  ahgains  thte  Moghul  Emperor

Shah  Jahan  in  Agra.  Mirza  Muhammad  summoned  a  war  counsel  at  the  darbar  and

was  frightened  .  His  city  had  walls  tall  enough  to  keep  small  groups  of  enemies  out

could  not  stand  against  the  raja’s  gang  that  would  be  approaching  within    2  days.

The  Ruler  of  Multan  knew  the  Raja  was  a  battle  tested  warrior  and  hard  on  victims

putting  them  to  the  sword  and  has  conquered  areas  before.  Raja  viewed  Mirza  the

ruler  of  Multan  as  the  weakest  part  of  the  Moghul  Empire  to  destroy  first  and  also

they  wanted  his  vast  rooms  filled  with  jewels  in  his  treasury.    All  Mirza  the  ruler  of

Multan’;s  war  counselors  and  viziers  were  panicked  and  cowardly  pleading  with  the

Emperor  to  make  a  truce  with  the  Raja  for  2  weeks  so  they  could  build  their  army  up

and  walls  and  defenses.  The  Emperor  knew  they  had  no  rsources  for  this  and  would

be  crushed  by  the  overwhelming  might  and  force  from  the  raja,  and  as  he  paced

Page 2: The Spirit of Sultan Bahu by Dr Javid Sarwari Qadri Summarised Version -Part 1

back  and  forth  through  the  sea  of  angry  and  scared  voices  ,  a  young  brave  well

groomed  handsome  warrior,  with  a  full  black  beard    and  medium  wiry  build,  stood

up  amidst  the  chaos  to  state  his  plan  to  his  leader.

His  name  was  Bazaid  Muhmmad    and  he  called  them  all  cowards  and  told  them  with

urgency  that  they  must  strike  the  Raja’s  forces  immdietly  with  zero  tolerance.

Mirza  raised  his  hand  and  decided  Bazaid  was  correct  and  gave  him  command  of  his

armies  and  told  him  to  attack  the  Raja.

Within  hours  he  had  and  about  22  000  warriors  and  horsemen  set  out  the  launch  an

offensive  outside  Multan.  Bazaid.  Bazaird  was  the  best  warrior  in  Multan  and  was

unmatched  in  his  bravery  and  fighting.  He  led  his  army  and  they  crushed  the  raja’s

forces.  He  was  a  spiritual  warrior  saint.  He  even  jumped  of  his  horse  in  middle  of

battle  to  make  salat.  His  fellows  admired  and  respected  Bazaid  for  his  religious

knowledge  and  for  his  courage.  He  believed  in  every  battle  that  is  was  hand  of  Allah

to  decide  victory  and  it  was  already  decreed.    He  was  just  also  at  the  end  of  the

battle  a  young  Rajput  boy  enemy  was  lying  on  the  ground  bleeding  from  the  neck

and  Bazaid  gave  him  some  water  and  helped  him  back  on  his  horse  and  told  him  to

go  back  where  he  came  from.  The  enemies’  losses  were  5  times  that  of  Multan’s

losses,  It  was  a  tremendous  victory  with  such  little  manpower  against  such  huge

odds.  Allah  was  with  him.

Crowds  of  people  gathered  outside  the  city  walls  along  the  path  of  the  returning

soldiers.  The  people,  eager  for  a  glimpse  of  their  savior,  came  out  in  such  huge

numbers  that  soldiers  had  to  hold  them  back  with  their  spear  shafts.  The  jubilant

Page 3: The Spirit of Sultan Bahu by Dr Javid Sarwari Qadri Summarised Version -Part 1

crowds  held  marigold  gar-‐  lands,  flowers,  and  bottles  of  rosewater  to  sprinkle  on  the

returning  fighters.  The  city  gates  were  covered  with  cloths  of  gold,  and  the  walls

were  decorated  with  velvet  and  brocade  curtains.

The  muslims’  victory  of  Multan  sent  fear  to  any  rival  kingdoms  that  were  nearby  and

left  standing.  But  the  Head  Emperor  Shah  Jahan  Head  of  the  Moghul  Empire  was

relieved  because  he  ws  ready  to  send  his  reinforcements  from  Lahore  to  Multan  to

help  Mirza  the  ruler  of  Multan.  He  didn  t  need  to  do  this  because  of  Bazaid’s  victory.

This  had  been  a  battle  of  epic  proportions,  in  tur-‐  bulent  times.  It  further

strengthened  the  glorious  Moghul  dynasty  and  Shah  Jahan’s  rule  over  two  thirds  of

the  Indian  subcontinent.

Shah  Jahan  was  a  courageous,  ruthless,  and  supremely  confident  ruler,  a  descendent

of  the  legendary  Moghul  warriors  Genghis  Khan  and  Timur.  He  had  been  the  fifth

Moghul  emperor  to  inherit  an  empire  that  stretched  a  thousand  miles  across  India

with  all  its  wealth,  glory,  and  magnificence.

Important  backstory  Moghuls’  History  of  Politics,  Violence  and  Intrigue:

Moghul  history  had  been  one  full  of  violent  battles,  brutality,  treachery,  and  dynastic

rivalries.  It  had  been  a  tale  of  overwhelming  passions,  emotions,  tragedy,  and

murder.  This  was  primarily  due  to  destroying  themselves  from  the  inside,  as  the

custom  of  the  Moghuls  were  for  the  born  sons  to  plot  against  each  other  and  kill

each  other  over  the  throne  of  the  kingdom.  As  war  men  say  “May  the  best  man  win.”

The  most  cunning  and  clever  and  violent  son  would  kill  his  other  brothers  and  even

their  own  fathers  and  take  over  the  throne  of  any  area  for  himself.  This  was  the

Page 4: The Spirit of Sultan Bahu by Dr Javid Sarwari Qadri Summarised Version -Part 1

main  problem  with  the  rulers  during  their  history.  There  had  been  constant  battles

between  brothers  and  between  sons  and  fathers.

India  had  been  mother  to  many  highly  developed  civilizations  in  the  history  of

mankind,  dating  back  to

3000  BC.  The  legendary  ruler  had  Ashoka  established  a  vast  empire  that  stretched

from  the  Khyber  Pass  to  Assam  and  from  the  foothills  of  the  Himalayas  to  the  plains

of  Deccan. But  he    oppressed  and  ruled  people  by  collecting  taxes  on  everything.

After  his  death,  the  great  empire  slowly  was  breaking  and  was  divided  into  gangs  of

regional  kingdoms.

India  had  become  famous  for  its  wealth  of  jewels  and  spices.  It  was  the  only  source

of  diamonds  until  the  eighteenth  century.  This  is  why  it  had  been  the  target  of

invaders  through  its  history.

The  greek  armies  of  Alexander  invaded  and  crushed  the  Indian  Porus  army  in  326

bc  .  Then  the  turks  and  afghans  crushed  the  greeks  and  took  over  for  a  while  in

1000  ad.  After  this  Genghis  Khan’s  forces  established  their  home  there  and  then  left

and  went  back  to  his  homeland.

In  1398,  King  Timur  had  crossed  the  Indus  River  and  pillage  all  the  way  to  the

capital  of  the  Delhi  sultanate.  He  butchered    residents  and  burned  the  capital.  The

death  toll  was  on  a  scale  that  it  is  said  that  nothing  was  living  there  not  even  animals

or  birds  for  two  months.

Timur  spared  architects,  craftsmen.  He  collected  them  and  took  them  to  beautify

and  build  his  capital.  Moghuls    loved  architecture  and  gardens.  They    had

magnificent  buildings,    mosques  and  tombs,  and  lush  gardens.  Timur,  with  the  help

Page 5: The Spirit of Sultan Bahu by Dr Javid Sarwari Qadri Summarised Version -Part 1

of  artisans  he  had  brought  with  him  from  conquests,  built  a  blue-‐domed  mausoleum

for  himself,  which  to  this  day  is  a  landmark  of  his  glorious  past.  Before  leaving  India,

Timur  established  a  new  kingdom,  the  Sayyids  dynasty.

Soon  after  with  the  belief  that  the  Sultanat  of  Delhi  had

belonged  to  Timur,  Babur,  a  great-‐great-‐grandson  of  Timur,  attacked  India  to  take

its  throne  for  himself.

Most  of  the  fighters  at  that  time  had  lineage  to  either  Genghis  Khan  or  Timur.

Timur’s  great  great  grandson  was  both.  Behind  conquests    Moghul  emperors  always

had  the  backing  of  women.  In  his  early  years,  Babur  was  guided  by  his  Moghul

grandmother.

His  grandmother  told  her  grandson    to  start  a  a  civil  war  in  land  of  Samarqand.

Babur  attacked  and  captured  the  city.  Nomad  Moghul  tribes  took  back  the  city

shortly  and  seized  land  from  Babur.  Babur  felt  like  a  broken  man  and  went  back  to

his  old  home  where  his  own  brother  was  ruling.  He  became  awanderer  for  3  years  ,

then  gained  strength  and  took  back  the  city  of  Samaraqand  from  the  Uzbeks.

He  lost  Samaraqand  again    a  year  later  to  rebels  and  when  he  was  a  homeless  king

devised  a  plan  and  ended  up  taking  over  Kabul  which  is  where  he  made  the  home

base  of  his  empire  .  Baburs  successors  also  controlled  Kabul  in  years  to  come.  Babur

is  credited  with  having  the  first  Islamic  autobiography  written  for  him    called  Babur

Namah,  which  was  written  with  poetic  prose  and  flowery  couplets  along  with

stories  of  glory.    He  became  bored  and  knew  his  own  army  would  kill  him  off  if  they

were  not  busy  so  he  raced  to  Hindustan  in  1519.

Page 6: The Spirit of Sultan Bahu by Dr Javid Sarwari Qadri Summarised Version -Part 1

In  1525,  he  launched  his  attack    down  through  the  Khyber  Pass,    crossing  the  Indus

River  and  ended  up  with  his  forces  in  Paniput,  near  Delhi.  Babur  had  taken  cannons

and  musket  from  the  Turks,  which  gave  him  the  upper  hand  in  this  battle  against

Sultan  Ibrahim  of  Lodhi  Dynasty.  Babur’s  forces  killed  all  of  Sultan  Ibrahim’s  men

and  the  Sultan  himself  within  hours.

After  taking  Delhi,  Babur  went  to  the  city  of  Agra.  He  was  crowned  the  ruler  of  Delhi

sultanate,  and  a  khutbah  was  read  in  his  name.

He  spent  the  last  years  of  his  life    halting  rebellions  against  Moghuls  and  fighting

neighboring    powers.  Babur’s    death  was  the  result  of  his  son’s  severe  illness.

He  asked  Allah  to  kill  him  instead  of  his  son  and  Allah  gave  the  illness  to  Babur  and

lifted  the  illness  off  his  own  son.  Babur  died  within  months.

After  his  father  Babur’s  death,  Humayun  ascended  the  throne  of  Hindustan.  He  was

fortunate  to  have  inherited  one  of  the  most  magnificent  empires.  He  was  by  nature

benevolent,  an  kind,  so  he  did  not  have  the  mindset  to  rule  the  most  violent

dynasty  in  the  world.  He  was  superstitious  with  astrology.  It  affected  his  daily  life

and  how  he  ran  the  government.  He  became  a  drug  addict  and  was  smoking  opium

all  day  every  day  and  lost  respect  of  his  companions  and  did  not  even  have  strength

to  rule  .  His  addiction    and  neglect  of  responsibility  resulted  in  his  losing  Hindustan.

Sher  Shah,  who  had  taken  over  as  the  emperor  of  Hindustan,  ended  up  dying  in

1545  .  His  son,  Islam  Shah,  ruled  after  him  and  died  in  1554.  Now  many  were

fighting  for  the  throne  of  Hindustan.  This  was  a  golden  opportunity  that  Humayun,

the  homeless  and  broken  former  king  could  not  ignore.  He  organized  a  army  and,

along  with  his  young  son,  Akbar,  advanced    into  India  and  was  able  to  defeat  his

Page 7: The Spirit of Sultan Bahu by Dr Javid Sarwari Qadri Summarised Version -Part 1

enemies  this  time.  He  retook  the  throne  of  India  after  fifteen  years.  He  was  on  the

roog  one  night  and  obsessed  with  astrology  still  and  addicted  in  a  trance  to  opium

he  was  in  his  observatory  looking  at  the  sky  for  venus  ,  he  head  the  adhan  and  fell

and  cracked  his  head  open  and  died  .

Akbar  his  son  took  over  the  throne  but  was  still  just  a  boy.  His  fathers  enemies

plotted  against  and  raised  an  army  against  him  .  In  Paniput  the  battle  took  place.

Akbar  won  the  battle    became  the  third  great  ruler  of  the  Moghul  dynasty.  He

transformed  Moghul  rule  in  Hindustan  into  a  magnificent  and  stable  empire.

In  1567,  Akbar  laid  siege  to  Chitor,  a  longstanding  symbol  of  Rajput  power.  He

defeated  them.  The  women  of  the  Chitor  all  committed  suicide  knowing  that  Akbar

would  kill  them.  By  1570  Akbar  made  the  reaming  Rajput  knights  submit  in  the

surrounded  areas  and  took  over  Kashmir,  Bengal,  and  Gujrat.  These  lands  were  not

a  part  of  the  Moghuls.  He  then  reconciled  with  the  Rajput  Hindus  as  a  strategy  at  age

19  and  married  over  300  of  their  girls  as  wives  over  his  lifetime.

He  lost  the  respect  of  his  own  subjects  because  he  became  religiously  liberal  and

very  much  like  a  sufi.  The    fundamentalist  followers  of  islam  did  not  like  his

tolerance  for  other  religions  and  wanted  to  kill  him  off.    Problem  was  Akbar  had  so

many  wives  but  was  not  able  to  have  a  child.  There  was  no  heir  yet.  Akbar’s  mother

told  him  to  go  see  a  sufi  saint  named  Shaykh  Saleem  Chisthi  from  Sikri.  Akbar  saw

religions  as  united  and  not  as  a  dividing  force.  His  current  wife  was  a  hindu.  He  went

to  see  the  Shaykh  and  asked  him  if  his  wife  since  she  was  a  infidel  would  leave  him

childless  as  people  whispered  rumors  like  this  about  him  every  day  in  his  kingdom.

Page 8: The Spirit of Sultan Bahu by Dr Javid Sarwari Qadri Summarised Version -Part 1

Shaykh  Saleem  Chisthi  said  there  are  many  ways  to  God  not  just  one,  and  this  had  no

bearing  on  her  having  a  child  as  God  is  most  merciful  to  all  religions.  He  told  him  he

would  have  two  sons  by  her  and  later  have  another  son  by  another  girl.  He

predicted  India  would  be  under  his  Heirs’  control  for  generation  and  stay  intact  as

the  Moghul  Empire.    He  told  Shaykh  if  this  comes  to  pass  he  would  his  capital  from

Agra    to  Sikri  and    also  name  a  city  after  the  Shaykh.    The  shaykh  said  this  will  come

to  pass  but  his  future  sons  were  dark  evil  ones  who  would  hate  their  father  and

their  uncles  and  want  power  for  themselves  so  though  the  empire  would  be

propsperous  there  would  be  much  family  bloodshed  and  their  end  was  unclear.

Akbar’s  Rajput  wife,  Hirabai,    became  pregnant  and  had  a  healthy  son.  Akbar  named

him  Salim,  after  the  Sufi  saint  Sheikh  Salim,  who  had  predicted  his  birth.  He  had  two

other  sons,  Murad  and  Daniyal,  from  other  wives.  Akbar  transformed  Hindustan  into

a  great,  wealthy,  and  powerful  empire  of  one  hundred  million  ethnically  religiously

diverse  people.  His  treasuries  overflowed  with  jewels.  Of  all  the  Moghul  emperors,

he  proved  to  be  the  most  worthy  of  his  name,  The  Great.  His  oldest  son  Salim  was

very  violent  in  nature  and  loved  luxury  and  materialistic  things.  Salim  had  3  sons.

Khusru  his  first  son  was  born  to  Manbai,  daughter  of  the  Hindu  Raja  of  Amber  .  His

second  son,  Parvez,  was  born  to  a  Muslim.    His  third  son,  Khurum,  was  born  in

Lahore  on  January  5,  1592,  to  a    Hindu  princess,  Jodh  Bai  of  Mervar.  His  birth,

according  to  royal  astrology,  was  most  important.  This  child, would  later  on  become

the  future  Moghul  king,  Shah  Jahan.

Page 9: The Spirit of Sultan Bahu by Dr Javid Sarwari Qadri Summarised Version -Part 1

******Book  then  jumps  forward  tot  he  Time  of  Bazaid  (Sultan  Bahu’s  Father)  and  the

Emperor  of  the  Moghul    Now  much  grown  up  into  a  man,  Shah  Jahan.

Shah  Jahan  the  Moghul  Emperor  of  Hindustan    invited  Mirza  Muhammad  of  Multan

to  his  palace    1  month  after  Bazaid’s  victory  against  the  Raja  of  Amarkhot.  Bazaid

went  with  the  king  of  multan  Mirza  Muhammad  and  200  soldiers  to  stay  there.

Bazaid  was  given  his  own  fortress  in  Jhang,  a  diamond  sword,  a  written  declaration

of  his  bravery  by  Shah  Jihan  during  his  stay  there.    Bazaid  also  fascinated  Shah

Jihan’s  daughters  the  princesses  who  loved  his  appearance.  Shah  Jahan’s  sons

honored  Bazaid’s  ability  to  memorise  the  Quran  in  entirety  and  his  mastery  in

Islamic  and  Sufi  Sciences  as  well  as  his  battle  acumen.

After  the  gathering  Bazaid  rose  back  to  claim  his  fortress  in  Jhang  in  Shorkot.

He  had  apartments,  luxurious  gardens  and  stables  for  horses.  Mant  attendents  and

servants  were  employed  to  take  care  of  him.

He  had  been  married  twice  before  but  never  had  kids.  He  felt  like  a  lonely  traveller

and  was  depressed  despite  having  a  grand  fortress  and  being  honored  for  his  valor

and  Deen.    He  wanted  desperately  a  heir  to  continue  his  legacy.    For  the  prior

hundred  years  the  people  of  Jhang  and  the  surrounding  area  were  very  poor  and

even  outside  his  own  fortress  Bazaid  cried  for  the  poor  people  he  saw  every  day  as

he  rode  by  them  outside  when  he  left  his  fortress.  He  went  to  see  the  Maulana  in

Jhang  and  told  him  he  wanted  to  establish  madrassas  and  masjids  and  places  of

worship  for  all  reglions.  His  subjects  were  80  percent  muslim  and  the  rest  were

other  relgiions.  Bazaid  asked  the  Maulana  of  the  local  mosque  in  Jhang  to  teach  in  all

Page 10: The Spirit of Sultan Bahu by Dr Javid Sarwari Qadri Summarised Version -Part 1

the  masjids  he  would  build  in  the  future  but  his  only  rewuirememt  was  that  the  kids

should  be  given  food  ,  clothes  and  shelter  free  of  charge  as  they  studied  Islamic

sciences.  His  intention  was  to  improve  the  condition  of  the  villages  in  the  area

outside  his  fortress  he  loved  the  poor  and  was  compassionate.  He  had  a  meeting  at

his  fortress  which  was  still  beautiful  but  under  construction  to  meet  with  all  the

poor  farmers  and  villagers  to  tell  them  of  his  plans  to  help  them  with  their  finances

and  food  shortages.  They  were  happy  to  be  under  his  rule.

Three  months  later,  Kahregan  fortress  was  fully  completed  and  a  spectacle.  The

main  apartment  complex  on  the  second  floor  was    furnished  with  Persian  and

Afghan  carpet  for  flooring;  velvet  and  silk  curtains  hung  on  the  windows.  It  was  an

artistic  expression.  There  were  splendid  gardens  and  magnificent  mango  and

cypress  tress.  He  gave  everything  to  the  poor  and  gave  them  upward  mobility.  He

founded  charity  institutions  for  them.  Bazaid  had  no  taste  for  power  even  though  he

was  promoted  to  supreme  commander  as  he  was  still  a  soldier  for  Mirza

Muhammad  in  Multan  but  living  in  his  fortress  in  Jhang.

He  was  40  and  wanted  to  take  a  wife  so  he  could  complete  his  life.  He  wanted  a

soulmate  who  could  share  in  his  legacy.  Among  his  own    family  was  one  regal

woman,  a  true  jewel  of  chastity,  Bibi  Rasti.  She  was  a  deeply  spiriutual  and

affectionate  person.  She  memorized  the  Quran  in  Persian  and  Arabic  and  studied

world  lieterature.  She  was  beautiful  in  countenance  and  could  be  mistaken  for  an

angel.  He  knew  she  was  going  to  make  him  a  better  person  and  desired  her  more  on

a  mental  level  then  physical.  They  got  married  after  Jumuar  Prayer  on  a  Friday  and  a

big  celebration  was  thrown  for  them.  That  night,  as  they  slept  together,  afterwards

Bibi  Rasti  performed  10  rakats  of  salat  close  to  dawn  and  was  reciting  Quran  outside

their  balcony.  Bazaid  awoke  and  was  told  by  his  gem  Bibi  that  :

“You  know  that  my  father  was  a  Sufi  saint,  and  his  spirituality  runs  in  my  veins,  but

there  is  something  you  don’t  know.  From  time  to  time,  I  have  the  gift  to  see  into  the

future.  As  I  lay  beside  you  last  night,  I  dreamed  that  very  soon  I  will  become

pregnant  with  a  child,  a  son.  My  premonition  tells  me  that  this  will  be  a  sacred  birth.

Do  not  ask  me  how  I  know  this.  Only  believe  me  that  it  will  come  to  pass.”

She  founded  more  schools  for  orphans  and  for  poor  children  and  devoted  her  time

to  taking  care  of  them.  She  gave  money  to  widows  and  dicorcees.  And  taught  many

kids  the  Quran  in  Persian.  Bazaid  was  head  over  heels  in  love  with  her  and  had  full

trust  and  devotion  for  her.  Bbi  Rasti  became  pregnant  soon  after  receiving  vision

which  she  had  more  often  after  meditating  on  the  name  Allah  at  nighttime.  She

spent  days  in  the  gardens  with  light  work  teaching  girls  Quran  and  sciences.

She  went  into  labor  and  had  traumatic  pain  but  Allah  put  her  in  a  blissful  state  as  the

baby  son  was  born.

Bazaid  gazed  down  at  his  son  with    love.  The  infant  opened  his  eyes  as  soon  as

Bazaid  lifted  him  .  Their  eyes  met  for  an  instant.  Bazaid’s  heart  leaped  in  his  chest  as

he  saw  unsurpassable    beauty  in  his  eyes.  Being  a  hafiz,  it  seemed  as  if  he  recited  the

whole  Qur’an  the  same  instant  with  every  fiber  of  his  being.  Such  a  blessing  is  called

dhikr-‐e-‐sultani,  a  method  of  remembering  Allah  and  the  Qur’an  in  which  every  cell,

hair,  and  fiber  of  the  body  participates  in  the  Zikr  Allah.  Bazaid’s  eyes  were  fixed  on

his  son’s  face  and  continued  to  regard  him  steadily,  feeling  a  strong  connection.

Page 12: The Spirit of Sultan Bahu by Dr Javid Sarwari Qadri Summarised Version -Part 1

Bibi  Rasti  told  her  husband,  “I  see  my  son  as  someone  with  God.  Therefore  I  name

him  Bahu  (with  God),  according  to  divine  ilham.  This  name  will  serve  both  as  an

indication  of  closeness  to  and  union  with  God,.

Bazaid  said  :“My  first  and  beloved  son,  I  name  you  Bahu  as  well,  as  it  was  revealed  to

your  mother  in  a  vision.”  Bazaid  lifted  up  his  son  and  recited  the  Shahadah  in  his

ear  and  held  the  Holy  Qur’an  over  his  head.  Then  he  picked  up  a  plate  full  of  gold

coins  and  poured  them  over  the  baby’s  head.  He  distributed  those  to  the  poor  of  the

village.  He    blessed  the  young  Bahu.  “May  Allah’s  Noor  shine  upon  you  and  your  sons

and  daughters.”  Bahu’s  face  had  innocence  and  divinity.  Both  parents  doted  over

their  blessed  son  and  tirelessly  loved  him.  Bibi  Rasti  encouraged  Bazaid  to  give  up

the  warrior  way  of  life  and  He  did  until  Mirza  Muhammad  called  on  him  to  take  on

one  last  military  campaign  against    Raja  of  Amarkot  whose  army  was  a  formiadable

threat  to  the  Moghul  Empire’s  existence.    Shah  Jahan  told  Mirza  Muhammad  to  help

the  Moghuls  with  his  fighting  and  art  of  war  bravery  by  crushing  Raja  in  order  to

buffer  up  security  against  any  invasions  and  stop  and  rebellions  against  them.  He

accepted  this  request  of  Shah  Jahan  and  Mirza  of  Multan  and  set  out  on  a  special

wild  horse  which  was  from  supposedly  the  lineage  of  Arabian  stallions  of  Hazrat  Ali,

As,  who  was  also  Bazaid’s  own  ancestor.  Bazaid  named  her  Saun  Pari  .

He  had  decided  to  punish  the  Raja  of  Amarkot,  who  was  growing  presumptuous  and

arrogant  and  had    plans  to  kill  the  Moghul  emperor,  Shah  Jahan.  Though  it  seemed

like  a  suicidal  mission,  he  knew  in  his  heart  that  it  was  not  his  destiny  to  die  in

battle.  Bravery  often  made  him  succeed  in  desperate  situations.  He  realized,  though,

that  many  battles  were  won  in    mind  before  being  won  on  the  field.

Page 13: The Spirit of Sultan Bahu by Dr Javid Sarwari Qadri Summarised Version -Part 1

Minutes  later,  Bazaid  was  galloping  on  his  horse  names  white  fairy  toward  the

fortress  palace  of    Raja  of  Amarkot.  He  had  his  steel  helmet  on,  his  gilded  breastplate

on  his  chest,  and  his  sword  .  With  each  stride  of  his  stallion,  the  shape  of  the  fortress

became  closer  and  closer.  Bazaid  his  in  some  bushes  500  yards  away  and  waited  to

attack  the  swordsmen  who  were  at  the  entrance  guarding  it.  He  saw  200  horsemen

from  the  Raja’s  army  coming  back  form  som  trip  and  decided  to  fool  them  and  blend

in  and  ride  in  the  back  of  them  inside  the  fortress.  He    rode  behind  them  as  they  did

not  notice  he  did  not  belong  to  their  army  preoccupied  and  once  inside  went  the

opposite  way  of  the    Raja’s  army    and  he  started  killing  all  the  swordsmen  in  sight.

He  killed  hundresds  of  them  with  sword  fighting  and  with  shooting  his  arrows  from

afar  at  enemies  that  lay  in  the  distance  in  the  courtyard  leading  to  the  Raja’s

chambers.  He  saw  the    Raja  was  resting  on  a  cushion.  groups  of  naked    girls  were

entertaining  the  raja,  who  sipped  aged  wine.

Bazaid  had  caught  the  raja  by  surprise.  Dazed  with  fear,  the  raja  instinctively

reached  for  the  jeweled  dagger  tucked  in  his  belt.  Before  he  knew  it,      Bazaid

decapitated  the  raja,  sending  his  head  spinning  off  of  his  body.  Bazaid  took  the

severed    head  of  the  raja  and  mounted  his  stallion  and  rode  back  to  multan  being

wounded  suddenly  by  some  of  the  raja’s  men  while  riding  off.  Despite  being

wounded  he  told  his  advisor  once  back  in  Multan  to  take  the  head  of  the  raja  and

bring  it  to  Mirza  and  Shah  Jahan.  A  Doctor  healed  his  wounds  as  he  was  hit  in  the

neck  with  an  arrow  and  slashed  in  the  shoulder  by  a  sword  while  leaving  the  palace

of  the  raja  during  the  heat  of  the  battle.  He  informed  Mirza  Muhammad  of  his

decision  to  retire  from  the  military  and  settled  with  Bibi  his  wife  and  his  son  Bahu  at

Page 14: The Spirit of Sultan Bahu by Dr Javid Sarwari Qadri Summarised Version -Part 1

their  home  fortress  which  was  renamed  Qila  Haveli  from  the  former  name

Kahregan.  Once  again  they  started  living  a  peaceful  life.  Bazaid  had  retired  from  the

army  and  dedicated  himself  to    service  of  God,  which  he  believed  was  serving  fellow

human  beings  in  distress.  They  had  fallen  in  love  with  their  new  life,  the  cornfields,  t

and  their  new  home  in  Kahregan  fortress,  which  they  now  called  Qila  Haveli.

Over  the  recent  weeks,  as  spring  had  blossomed,  they  had  celebrated  Bahu’s  fourth

birthday.  His  parents  decided  that  Bahu  should  start  formal  education  now  that  he

was  four  years  old.  He  had  already  shown  signs  of  exceptional  ability.

“I  will  take  him  to  madrassa  myself  on  Saturday  so  he  can  begin  his  education,”

Bazaid  said  .  “The  first  day  of  school  is  an  important  event  in  a  child’s  life.  I  want  him

to  learn  about  religion,  the  Qur’an,  literature,  math,  astronomy,  and  history  to

inspire  him  to  search  for  the  truth.”

“I  am  also  curious  to  know  how  Bahu  will  conduct  himself  in  the  madrassa.  I  am  sure

he  will  do  very  well,”  Bibi  Rasti  said

On  the  first  day  of  school  walking  hand  in  hand  with  his  father  Bahu  saw  a  Divine

Vision  an  Ilham,  It  seemed    he  were  floating  in  the  air.  He  saw  angels  accompanying

him  every  step  of  the  way.  They  were  talking  to  each  other.  Bahu  listened  to  them.

One  of  the  angels  said,  “When  God  wishes  to  bestow    great  honor  on  his  close

friends,  he  gives    them  the  title  of  Sultan  ul  Fuqra  ,  and  Bahu  is  one  of  them.”

Bahu  could  not  understand  what  the  angel  meant  by  Sultan  ul  Fuqra,  but  the  word

sultan  resonated  in  his  mind.

“But  where  is  he  going?”  asked  another  angel.  “He  is  going  to  madrassa  to  learn  to

read  and  write.”  This  puzzled  the  third  angel.  “But  why  does  he  need  to

Page 15: The Spirit of Sultan Bahu by Dr Javid Sarwari Qadri Summarised Version -Part 1

learn  the  knowledge  of  the  world  of  multiplicity?  Has  not  Allah  promised  to  teach

His  friends  from  directly?”  “This  is  absolutely  true,”  said  the  first  angel.  “We  will  see

what  happens  in  madrassa,”  the  first  angel  replied,  smiling  .

Bazaid  walked  into  the  front  door  of  the  mosque  and  let  Bahu  enter  the  classroom.

A  strong  built  man  with  flowing  hair  came  into  the  classroom  and  addressed  the

students  in  an  authoritative  way.  “I  am  Mawlana  Abdul  Rauf.  Today  I  will  teach  the

alphabet  that  is  the  building  block  of  knowledges.  Pay  attention  and    have

concentration.  Look  at  each  letter  and  contemplate.  Then  come  up  with  something

starting  with  that  alphabet  letter.”

With  chalk,  he  wrote  the  letter  Alif  (A)  on  the  board  and  asked,  “What  is  this  called?”

All  the  students  shouted  ,  “Alif’  (A).”  He  then  asked  Bahu,  “What  does  Alif  stand  for?”

Bahu  got  up  on  his  feet  and  looked  intently,  with  a

trance  .  A  divine  inspiration  came  to  him  .  He  found  infinite  noor  blazing  within

himself.

Bahu  then  gazed  up  to  heaven  and  said,  “Alif  is  He,  the  One,  the  Unique,  the  First,  the

Beginning,  the  Creator,  the  All,  the  Sustainer,  and  the  loving  One.  Alif  is  the  word,  the

Kalima,  the  Divine  speech,  the  secret...”  Words  were  pouring  out  out  of  Bahu’s

mouth  like  a  geyser  as  if  somebody  else  were  speaking  through  him.  He  started

speaking  in  a  dream  state,  “Alif  is  He,  the  Lover,  the  Beloved  and  the  Love.”

Bahu  was  sweating  ;  his  face  became  pale  and  he  fainted  and  fell  to  the  ground.

“Please,  God,  no,”  Mawlana  Abdul  Rauf  said  to  himself.  Since  Bahu  was  the  son  of  the

most  influential  jagirdar  (landlord)  of  Punjab,  he  felt  responsible  if  something

happened  to  him.

Page 16: The Spirit of Sultan Bahu by Dr Javid Sarwari Qadri Summarised Version -Part 1

Bahu  was  thrashing  violently  on  the  ground.  The  mawlana    shouted,  “Stand  back,

give  Bahu  some  air.”  Then  he  told  a  student  by  name  of  Naurang,  “Hold  his  body  and

legs  and  try  to  calm  him  down.  And    bring  a  cup  of  water  and  sprinkle  on  his  face

gently.”

Bahu’s  lips  were  still  moving  as  if  he  were  conversing  with  somebody.  After  a  while

Bahu  came  back  to  himself.  The  mawlana  helped  him  to  sit  and  propped  him  against

the  wall  .  His  face  was  a  little  paler  than  usual,  and  his  long  hair  disheveled,  but

otherwise  he  was  the  same.  His  bright  eyes  had  not  lost  any  of  their  mystical  charm.

“There  is  nothing  to  worry  about,”  said  the  mawlana  to  the  students.  He    took  Bahu

home  to  Qila  Haveli.  He  told  Bazaid  and  Bibi  what  happened  in  the  madrassa.

Bibi  Rasti  embraced  Bahu  in  an  emotional  hug  and  asked  gently,  “What  happened

today?”

Bahu  replied  innocently,  “I  was  concentrating  on  the  letter  Alif  (A)  as  my  teacher

suggested,  and  a  wave  of  love  came  over  me.  My  body  started  shaking  in    ecstasy,

and  I  felt  as  if  I  were  immersed  in  a  bright  light.  I  heard  a  voice  say,  ‘You  are  our

beloved  friend,  and  I  have  chosen  you  for  Myself.’”

His  words  made  sense  to  her.  It  seemed  to  her  that  God  had  singled  out  Bahu  to

declare  His  glory.    It  was  the  beginning  of  a  amazing  spiritual  journey  he  had  to

embark  upon.  Bibi  Rasti  was  now  sure  that  Bahu’s  name  would  pass  down  through

time.

She  held  Bahu  in  her  embrace  and  said,  “Have  no  fear  of  these  episodes.  God  has

shone  his  light  upon  you,  and  He  will  take  care  of  you.”

Page 17: The Spirit of Sultan Bahu by Dr Javid Sarwari Qadri Summarised Version -Part 1

With  his  mother’s  strong  assurances,  he  went  to  madrassa  the  next  day,  but  the

same  thing  happened  again.  All  the  other  students  were  now  frightened.  They

thought  that  he  was  possessed  by  jinn.  They  avoided  him.  Only  his  friends  Naurang

and  Nur  Muhammad  felt  a  connection  to  him  and  stay  by  his  side.

Bahu  also  miraculously  started  praying  salat  at  the  tender  age  of  3.  He  felt  a  awe  for

his  father  whenever  he  stood  beside  him  to  perform  namaz.
