The Association of Anglican Musicians Midwinter Conference Highlights

Christ Church Bronxville hosted a conference of the Association of Anglican Musicians (AAM) from January 14-17. Most AAM midwinter conferences draw 30-40 people. We set out to do something different at this conference – to focus on something born in the 14th century and to ask how it might be relevant today. The conference was attended by over 100 people, literally from all over the globe. It was a huge success, here is one comment:“I want to congratulate and thank you [Christopher Wells] for organizing and hosting a spectacular conference. Ash Wednesday is March 9thAsh Wednesday, a day of fasting and penitence, is the gateway to Lent. The ashes we receive remind us of our mortality. Our coming to receive them is a sign that we will make a sincere effort to cleanse our lives of sin and to put God first. Ash Wednesday calls us to put aside pride and choose humility. It calls us to acknowledge our failings and amend our hearts in the comfort of knowing that we are loved.

The Christ Church service schedule for Ash Wednesday is as follows:7:00 AM Holy Eucharist and Imposition of Ashes12:00 PM Imposition of Ashes7:00 PM Holy Eucharist and Imposition of Ashes

Traditional Lenten Regulations:The Book of Common Prayer indicates two days of expected fasting and abstinence from meat – Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. For many Christians, Fridays in Lent have been days of special observance, generally including fasting. Traditionally, fasting has meant that one full meal per day be taken. Two smaller meals have also been allowed to maintain strength. The tradition has also been to refrain from eating meat on Fridays. Remembering Jesus’s death through some form of observance on Fridays is an important aspect of any Lenten spiritual discipline. It is our hope that these Forty Days of Lent might be well used to set our hearts, minds and souls toward “things ofimportance.”

Practicing Our Faith“Christian practices are things Christian people do together over time in response to and in light of God’s active presence for the life of the world.”That is the claim of the theologians Craig Dykstra and Dorothy Bass in the opening pages of Practicing Our Faith: A Way of Life for a Searching People. This year, for our third “Sunday Shorts” Series, we will explore the meaning and importance of Christian faith practices and ways in which leading Christian thinkers are working toward the a reclaiming of these practices in our own time. Our study is particularly apt for these season of this church year, when our focus is on the manifestation of Christ as the “light of the world” and our responsibility as bearers of that light. The schedule of our study is as follows:February 20: “Times of Yearning, Practices of Faith” (An Introduction)February 27: “Honoring the Body”March 6: “Hospitality”March 27: “Forgiveness”April 3: “Healing” April 10: “Dying Well”

(Please note that there are breaks in this schedule, as required by other events in the scheduling of parish programs). All sessions, lead by The Rev. Amy Lamborn, will be held in the Crispell Lounge immediately following the 10 AM Eucharist. As usual, coffee and a light snack will be available there for you enjoyment and convenience.Copies of the book, which contain the relevant reading for these sessions, will be also be available for purchase for $15. For questions, or to reserve a copy of the book, please contact Mother Lamborn at [email protected] or at 914-337-3544.

Soup Kitchen Serving…Easiest Volunteer Opportunity Ever!Today I answered Shawn O’Neil’s plea for help in serving the hungry men and women of the Sacred Heart Soup kitchen in Mt. Vernon. “What do I need to bring?” I asked Shawn. “Nothing,” she replied. “How long will it take?” “An hour.” Are you kidding me? No, she wasn’t. Shawn even picked me up with a car full of fun women, and we were able to catch up on life on the short drive to Mt. Vernon. Our job at the soup kitchen was to deliver trays of food to the clients. Sacred Heart is very organized, a labor of love run by Roberta Apuzzo, who has been serving food in the kitchen for 20 years. They operate on a shoestring, serving breakfast, bag lunches and dinner every Tues -Friday. They also provide weekly groceries to families with HIV/AIDS.Christ Church has agreed to support this organization as one of our outreach missions. I’m so guilty of ignoring Shawn’s pleas through the Spire and the announcements in the bulletin. It wasn’t until Shawn contacted me directly that I said, “yes, of course!”And I’m so glad I did. By taking an hour of my day to serve other people, I had the chance to witness the love of dedicated volunteers, the grateful spirit of many of the hungry, and recall my many blessings. I might’ve met Christ. Maybe He was the guy named Africa who was wearing a tiger inspired coat made from fleece. Africa told me that he designed the spectacular ensemble himself. So don’t make the same mistake I did. The next time you see a plea for volunteer help at the soup kitchen, do yourself a favor. Send Shawn a message saying “Yes, I’d love to help.” - Sarah Kraemer

CCB’s Breakfast Run, a major component of our youth outreach program, is generally held twice a semester as part of our Global Mission program. While all are welcome, focus is on 7th and 8th grade Confirmation Candidates who are required to attend at least one run a semester. All participants share equally in the preparation and cost of the food by bringing required and pre-assigned groceries and casseroles. CCB youth meet on scheduled Sunday mornings in the Church kitchen at 6:45 AM to prepare bag lunches, breakfast food and toiletries. The “Runners” depart for Manhattan in cars driven by CCB parent leaders at 7:30 AM for arrival at a Manhattan street corner, assigned to us by the greater New York Midnight Run organization, at 8:00 AM. CCB volunteers provide 25-50 homeless adults a warm breakfast casserole, bagels and cream cheese, English muffins and jelly, orange juice and hot coffee. Recipient “guests” depart with a bag lunch (containing a turkey and cheese sandwich, hard boiled egg, chips, and dessert) and a bag of toiletries (containing toothbrush and paste, soap, deodorant, shampoo, razor & cream). We depart Manhattan by 9:00 AM and return to Christ Church by 9:30 AM in time for the 10:00 AM service. Parent leaders try to make the trip fun but meaningful. The younger CCB participants come away both with more compassion for those less fortunate and a greater appreciation for the gifts in their own lives. P.G.Costa

CCB’s December Outreach, “Lettuce Pray”This past Advent, CCB Global Mission expanded its involvement with the Buduburam Refugee School in Ghana through a fundraiser entitled “Lettuce Pray.” In addition to traditional Christmas gifts for their own loved ones, donors were afforded the opportunity to help share the spirit of Christmas with needy children in Africa. Generous donations from CCB parishioners will serve to fund a permaculture garden, a self-sustaining source to feed the school’s students. The garden will grow vegetables and fruit, and CCB

donations covered everything necessary for the project, from seeds to permaculture instruction. Additionally, some donors purchased books and uniforms to enable additional students to attend the school. Look for progress reports and photos as the project commences in the coming months, and thank you to all whose generosity has again helped care for those who are unable to care for themselves, even if they live on the other side of the world.
