Happy New Year! Yes, we survived 2016. In fact, we thrived because of your incredible hard work, creativity, and dedication. I am personally grateful to each one of you for your tremendous support through the first half of my term as President, and I wish

everyone a rewarding and joyous new year. I look forward to seeing what 2017 has in store.

We want you to start the year off right by joining us and bringing a guest to our monthly lunch meeting January 4 at Farm Bureau Café at Trustmark Park in Pearl. Networking and fellowship starts at 11:30 but stay for education and lunch.

You can also jump start the year by helping us SELL OUT of exhibit space at the 2017 Product Show coming up on February 22. Product representatives and suppliers still have time to sign up for a booth. This is a great opportunity to meet new architects and designers and network. I hope you plan to attend the show and seminar "Build with Strength - Concrete Value and Innovations". You will be seeing a lot more information coming out soon. Please be sure to invite all those in the construction industry. Let’s make it the best Product Show yet. For more information contact Dennis Walters, Product Show Chair.

Mississippi CSI during the commemoration of our 50th Anniversary. The 50th Celebration conveys a true sense of Mississippi CSI spirit. I would like to thank those who traveled from near and far to be with us on that great night. For those who were not able to attend, you were missed. An amazing time was had by all. I especially want to thank our Anniversary Committee, chairman “Mr. Large Time” Phil McDade. Members all worked so diligently in volunteering their time to plan and support the anniversary celebration. Its success can be attributed to your steadfast dedication to the chapter.

John and Charlene Dunaway put together a great video narrated by Phil McDade that documents the history of Mississippi CSI. You can find it on YouTube. See link on page 5. The video reflects on the success of the chapter because of its investment in members, communication, service to the community, and organizational improvement. These priorities will continue to guide us through achieving our mission of being responsive to the needs of the constructions industry.

Please join me in developing and implementing successful strategies to support our priorities so that we can continue to advance the longstanding vision and mission of CSI for the next 50 years. You can do this by sharing, “WHY CSI!”

Cambria is a natural, quartz surfacing product that has a variety of uses in your home or business such as countertops, floor tile, vanities, fireplace surrounds, wet bars, showers, etc. Cambria is pure, natural quartz, one of the hardest and most common minerals on Earth. Quartz Surfaces Attributes, Production, Benefits,

and Design Applications

This course uncovers the fundamentals of quartz surfacing and provides an overview of the supply chain. Specification best practices will be discussed on where quartz can be used in commercial applications and how to ensure design engineering for a spectacular end result. There will also be a look into surface selection, as well as surfaces in general, to determine the best product for the application and quality control considerations for manufacturing variables.

The Mississippi Chapter 50th Anniversary Celebration

The Mississippi Chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute Page 4

Mississippi CSI celebrated 50 years on December 8. This was truly a special celebration. Chapter leaders wish to extend our gratitude to the Anniversary Celebration sponsors, without whom this could not have been such a grand event. See Sponsor listing on page 5.

The opening remarks by our president, Betina Latiker, set the tone for the evening as she opened the evening by incorporating a little bit of humor. Betina also introduced Tom Clarke who gave a heartfelt and sincere prayer prior to dinner.

And the dinner was a HIT! Everyone raved about the menu prepared by

Old Capitol Inn's, Chef Bruce Cain. It was amazing that he and the hotel staff were able to serve beautifully prepared filets to over 100 attendees that pleased everyone's pallet. That in itself was an accomplishment but the rest of the meal was just as special with a desert that couldn't be resisted by a steadfast dieter.

After dinner we heard from speakers who continued with the celebration by offering inspirational and humorous stories about Mississippi CSI.

Billy Mathis, Institute Director, gave a wonderfully honed speech praising our Chapter as one of the best in the Gulf States Region followed by more humor mixed with

praises by Tom Ferguson, GSR President, and then our own John Murray, GSR Vice President, who also added some slides for additional laughter.

Mike Davis, Former Institute President, asked for a show of hands of those introduced to CSI by a Mississippi

Chapter member. The response was overwhelming as hands went up all over the room. Mike told a story about trying to get a drink at our hospitality room at his first attendance many years ago during a GSR Conference we were hosting and being turned away by then hospitality room host Glen Lewis, reminding him that "yes we play hard" but when it's time to work we get down to business with no distractions.

Other GSR members who were unable to attend sent praises read by Phil McDade. Notable was a message sent by Former Institute President, Edith Washington, talking of the dedication of Mississippi Chapter

members and our wiliness to take on the hard task whenever asked by a GSR or Institute leader.

Cathy Proctor, former GSR President, recalled the formation of the Gulf States Region Water Ballet. Sorry, you had to be there to fully understand this full story. It also helps to know what a great, and fun, leader Cathy is, taking charge of a bunch of partially intoxicated CSI members in the swimming pool at the Hilton to form a fun activity that

developed into a team building exercise that is now a GSR tradition.

Other GSR and Institute members sent congratulatory messages to the Chapter expressing their thanks for our Chapter members’ dedication to CSI and always being there when other Chapters needed our help, support, and advice.

Mark Dorsey, CSI CEO, talked about the future of CSI and the role that each of us as CSI members can play in the bright and promising future.

The evening ended with a special 50 year service award to Robert V.M. Harrison for his inspiration in helping start the Mississippi Chapter as a Charter member in 1966 and his continued service and mentoring to all that have followed ion his footsteps. That was followed by a champagne toast.

It was wonderful to see the great camaraderie around the room experienced by CSI members from all around the GSR as well as past CSI members and those that we hope will be future CSI members. Here's looking forward to the next 50 years.

Of course, no event can go forward without some sort of glitch. Our CSI multimedia presentation was supposed to be played prior to the speakers but due to technical issues it did not function properly. John and Charlene Dunaway wrote, directed, and produced the historical video. You can still see this story of our history if you go to You Tube to

view it. Thanks to John Murray for setting that up for us. Here's the link to "Mississippi CSI - A Proud Past and a Promising Future".
