Terms of Reference• Assess training needs of SME owners and managers (including entrepreneurs yet to start a business)
• Review existing training materials
• Create a marketing and management module to help meet training needs – drawing on existing resources where possible
• Regional workshop
• Implementation and review
Training Needs AnalysisThe in-depth interviews identified the following core areas of training need:
• marketing;
• management - HR, accounting, finance etc;
• information technology use and application;
• greening business;
• developing cultural/sense of place product elements;
• networking and alliance development;
• how the tourism industry ‘works’
Training Needs Analysis• training providers are not able to satisfy entirely the demand for training from the owners and managers of tourism SME
• a gap between high-end, longer duration, university courses & basic courses on business start up. Hard to find resources that can assist in the growth phase of SME
• difficult to access up-to-date and inexpensive training on a regular basis

Training Needs Analysis The internet represents the best tool to provide ongoing background information for both trainers and managers/owners alike.
The internet offers the best way to supplement less frequent face-to-face training.
Training Needs Analysis• Training materials need to be “alive” and
exciting. Many prefer case studies.
• Benchmarking and learning from others is important. A willingness to share
experiences and knowledge.
• Complexities: language, inner/outer island
“if you don’t provide free access we probably won’t use it”
