Striving to mirror Christ
in word and action by reaching
out to serve others!
Our Mission
Statement
Journeys
Inside this issue:
July 2017 Volume 16, Issue 07
is a monthly publication of St. Paul Lutheran Church
The Song of Cacophony On a spectacular sunny Southern
California afternoon, I sit in front of
Kean’s coffee. The birds chirp their ex-
quisite song, and I notice, but the smell
of fresh roasted and ground coffee
wafts out the door and my synapse are
firing messages of an award-winning
Latte. The first thoughts of this article
are being surreptitiously tapped on my
iPhone while continuing an attention-
required conversa-
tion.
I also notice an
apricot-filled, old
fashioned donut in
the glass case and
wonder if my pants
could handle just a
smidge more girth. The bird still sings,
even if my senses are tantalized by sug-
ar and butter while deliberating current
events!
A slight wind rouses and a Bird of
Paradise, no relation to the chirping va-
riety , smiles an orange wink in my di-
rection. Is the bird intoning still vibrant
for my life, even with this distraction,
no matter how regal.
This summer, we are emphasizing
the art of God’s extravagant creation.
As a reminder, I am using your photos
on the screens to welcome us to wor-
ship and remind us of Godʹs world!
Please continue to send me your favor-
ite nature photos! Is our multi-sensory
world a dilution or enhancer of Godʹs
voice? If I hear God’s voice in familiar
bird-song, does my embrace of the hills
beyond, eclipse the bird-song?
May I suggest that the bird of para-
dise heightened my listening of God’s
bird voice with a humorous (?) connec-
tion between birds of varying species!
The wave of fresh ground coffee didn’t
question the divine chirp, but added
senses to juxtaposed creation while en-
livening the healthy conversation!
The donut, well, Ma-
cy’s has plenty of siz-
es to accommodate
my girth and proba-
bly has the least to do
with bird-song! (For
the health ministry
team: I didn’t have
the donut, narrowly escaping blood
sugar extravagance and an added trip
to the big and tall shop!)
The point of my ramblings? When
we encounter God’s word, variations of
God are offered though multi sensory
iterations. At Pentecost, unfamiliar, di-
verse languages, beautifully offered,
even simultaneously, transported my
mind to a new modern understanding
of historic Pentecost.
Let us continue the intellectual
study of the historical lessons of God,
thank you Pastor Stephanie, while
maintaining a complete love of the ca-
cophonous. We marvel at the over-
whelming beauty we experience in eve-
ry moment of our frenetic lives!

Our first ever used book sale at St.
Paul was such a success that we decided
to have another one. The book sale is
scheduled for Saturday, August 5— 8
a.m.– 1 p.m. and Sunday, August 6 —9
a.m.to Noon.
The proceeds
from this
year’s sale
will be donat-
ed to the St.
Paul Seminar-
ian Fund and Fullerton’s All the Arts for
all the Kids.
Due to limited storage space, we
cannot accept donated books before July
23. BUT, you can start a box of books
for donation now. Any genre will be
happily accepted. We will also accept
books on DVD or CD and movie DVDs.
Remember, one person’s trash is another
person’s treasure. We know our sale is
on the radar of the professional book
buyers because several of them men-
tioned last
year that
“your people
read some re-
ally good
books.” So,
please do
keep those “really good” books coming
– and coming - after July 23.
If you have any questions, please
contact Pastor Stephanie, Janet Wolf,
Carol Pankow, Debbie Makin or Joanne
Larson.
A Success Worth Repeating—St. Paul’s Second Annual Used Book Sale
When too much information attacks
at any given moment, let the mass of it
surround you, and hear the combina-
tion of new iterations of the mystery of
Godʹs creation! Let us raise our voices
in worship and song, and be renewed
in our calling to be the viva vox evan-
gelii—“the living voice of the gospel”, a
vibrant spark of God’s creative family!
With gratitude for the amazing fam-
ily of St. Paul,
PS: If you want to see the spark of
creation, ask Honey and Bonita to show
pictures of Hawaiian turtles!

THANK YOU! Results will be announced soon. Special
thanks to out Golf Committee members who work so
hard every year to make this such a success!

As a lay voting member representing
St Paul Lutheran Church, I attended my
first ELCA assembly in San Diego this
May. With our family history of multiple
generations of Lutherans, including my
grandfather, Reverend Henry Kerl and
my uncle Reverend Kurt Kerl, I wonder
why I have never participated in this
part of my church faith. I want to en-
courage many of you who have NEVER
participated in assembly, to prayerfully
consider adding this to your bucket list.
Other members of St Paul Lutheran
attending were Judy Christopher, Cathy
Peters, Kaitlin Peters and Pastor Stepha-
nie Lape and Eric Lape.
There were inspirational speakers
that gave us some good Information as
well as great thoughts to ponder. Thurs-
day, Rev R. Guy Erwin, Bishop of South-
west California Synod (our neighboring
Synod) spoke on the 500 year anniver-
sary of the Reformation. He spoke of
how Martin Luther’s world was much
different than ours - with the balance
sheet way of thinking based on penance,
death was always in sight and the focus
was on suffering and judgment. This is
quite a contrast to our spiritual life con-
text. Today our life is based on personal
well being, with our balance sheet way
of thinking has thoughts of karma, death
is hidden away and taboo to talk of, and
social focus is pleasure and distraction.
Luther’s story of Jesus still speaks to us
as we love and trust in God and the Bi-
ble is the story of Grace. The challenges
among and within us is to trust in Jesus.
Our second keynote address was
presented by Rev Chris Alexander. Her
congregation was bold to step out of
their comfort zone, to be join a Tri Faith
initiative in Omaha, NE. There is a syna-
gogue, mosque and Christian church on
the campus as Jews, Muslims, and Chris-
tians, all descendents of Abraham, share
their faith life, intentional neighbors
with three individual worship space on
16 acres. She led all of us with medita-
tive prayer sessions, and gave guidance
with contemplative reflection.
Bishop Reverend Andrew Taylor,
reviewed the role of our Synod serving
congregations together to do the work of
the God. There are six needs for our Lu-
theran congregations. We need faith
through the Gospel, remembering that
God is with you and having hope for the
future. We need the ability to love one
another, remembering that love is an
action, not a feeling, avoiding factions
that are not heard, and love the people
you disagree with. We need church mis-
sion, as we are here to serve, not to be
served locally and global service to oth-
ers. We need good leadership, with the
congregations encouraging lay leaders,
deacons, and pastors. We need funding,
as members of church participate in
stewardship, financial support and good
accounting practices. We need the will-
ingness to seek God’s help for the prob-
lems of the world. There are local and
global needs to care for refugees.
At the beginning and ending of each
session, there were speakers who shared
their church walk of faith that they put
into action to outreach to others. There
were great testaments of reaching out to
others, acceptance of individuals and
groups that enriched the diversity of our
church. We had the opportunity to learn
about Coaching Ministry, which Joanne

Looking for a Few Good Women
Larson shared with the assembly.
There were field trips to Agape House,
Border Angels, Chicano Park and
Third Avenue Charitable Organization
(TACO) outreach to see some of the
San Diego area community needs.
There were on site workshops as well
lead by church leaders. Our Friday
evening banquet was supporting Lu-
ther Glen camp programs.
My personal experience of listening
to Balance in Life living with Grati-
tude, Generosity and Grace, led by Rev
Bob Mooney was inspirational. He
spoke of what we do for others, shar-
ing random acts of kindness daily, the
gravity of giving – creates energy and
draws us closer to the heart of God and
the needs of others, and take time to
reflect with journaling, and meditation
practice using Richard Rohr daily med-
itation, or Jesus Calling by Sarah
Young
It is always difficult to set aside
time for extra commitments, and I per-
sonally had to rearrange three personal
activities, but I want to share the Synod
experience is an important part of help-
ing each church to inform, reform and
transform our life of faith. Thank you
for your supporting my ELCA Synod
attendance .

Let it be known to all of you, and to all the people of Israel, that this man is standing before you in good health by
the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,* whom you

Spirituality Conference As part of St Paul Health Ministries
team, three of us attended this day- long
conference-presented by Hoag Hospital on
March 15, Debbie Makin , Sara Jimenez,
and myself. It was in Newport Beach at the
Radisson Hotel. There were about 300 nurs-
es, doctors, ministers, chaplains, & rabbis in
attendance. At 8 a.m., after a very nice con-
tinental breakfast, we were welcomed by
Hoag Hospital’s Susan Johnson RN, who
heads up all the health team ministries of
churches, synagogues & temples through-
out Orange County. Then was followed by
a spiritual reflection.
We then had an enjoyable presentation
by Scott Harris titled “God, Health & Joy “
He tried an experiment on us all and nearly
hypnotized half the audience using visuali-
zation & deep breathing to relax. Next
speaker was Rabbi Elie Spitz—
“Responding to a Higher Call and avoiding
Burnout “ It was interesting to get a per-
spective from another religion besides Lu-
theran.
After a short break, there was a panel
discussion led by a moderator from Mis-
sion Hospital “Incorporating Spiritual Care
into your Practice “ On the panel was a
doctor, a nurse, 2 chaplains from Hoag & a
director of spiritual care and ethics from
Mission Hospital. Probing questions were
presented to the panel with varied and in-
teresting viewpoints discussed, depending
on how each one interacted with patients .
The section of the conference that
made the largest impression on us was the
panel discussion. Many of the panelists,
and in particular the young woman who
was a Muslim chaplain, emphasized the
importance of meeting family and patients
where they are at emotionally in a time of
illness. Families and patients may not be
ready to hear about God’s plan for them
but simply being with the family and ac-
cepting where they are at the time provides
considerable comfort and leaves that spir-
itual space for family to come back and dis-
cuss their pain. It was an important mes-
sage to take forward in order to help per-
sons in crisis and illness.
We then broke for a delicious lunch
and had time to network with other nurses
and also visit the vendors, getting ideas of
services and products available to us and
our team at St Paul. After lunch , Cordula
Dick-Muehlke .PHD, Consultant in aging &
Dementia spoke about “Hope for the
Different “ Cordula has spoken twice at St.
Paul about dementia and Alzheimerʹs.
Hopefully you were able to hear one of her
talks as she is very knowledgeable regard-
ing her specialty. Next speaker was Dr.
Christopher Duma, a neurosurgeon at
Hoag –topic was “Music Heals Project “ He
believes one’s DNA of the brain can be al-
tered with music. He also spoke about his
fascinating research being done to treat
Alzheimerʹs by using stem cells taken from
the patient’s own body fat & injecting it
directly into the brain via a port-a-cath. He
showed a video of a patient who had re-
ceived this treatment and showed promis-
ing signs of improvement. You may check
him out on : “music- heals.com/Duma “
We all found the day to be very enjoya-
ble and informative. It felt special to be in
the presence of so many medical and cleri-
cal professionals who all have the same
goal & beliefs—love of God and taking care
of others.

We welcome and encourage all prayer requests. Please
submit your requests in writing on your Worship
Registration card, via email or phone call to the Church
Office. Once or twice each month, names will be removed
from the list who have been in print at least 3 consecutive
weeks (except those deployed overseas). You are welcome to
re‐submit any name removed from the list, or you may
remove a name at anytime by contacting the Church Office.
Thank you! If you or someone you know is in the hospital,
please be sure to call the church office (714) 879‐8290 to
inform us. Confidentiality laws now prevent hospitals from
contacting churches when congregation members are
hospitalized.
