The Smartphone Sacrifice Phone calls. Text messages. Emails.
Snapchat. Facebook.
Twitter. Insta. ESPN. Pinterest. CNN. Stocks. How much of your time
is consumed with using your phone for one of these things? It is
said that the average smartphone user looks at his/her phone once
every 6 minutes. Once every 6 minutes! If a person sleeps 8 hours a
night that would mean the average smartphone user looks at their
phone around 160 times a day. Can you believe that? John 15:13
says, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his
life for his friends.” Instead of thinking about ways we could lay
down our lives for our friends, what if we started by laying down
our phones.
Imagine all the good that could be accomplished for God if
our
concern was the look on our co-workers face in the break room. I
wonder what would happen if we used our 5 minutes in the hallways
between classes to check on a struggling friend instead of seeing
how many texts we received during class. Just think how strong of a
message we could send if during a family meal, all of our phones
were left in another room in order to devote all of our attention
to the people surrounding the table? Let me clarify something, I am
not saying that smartphones are bad. However, I am saying that we
allow them to hinder our ability to focus on the people in front of
our face as we attempt to change lives.
In John 15:13, when Jesus gave us a description of love, he
focused on the principle of sacrifice, specifically one’s life.
Today, would you be willing to sacrifice some phone time for
face-to-face time with another individual? God showed us in Jesus
that he will let nothing hold him back from sacrificing for people
who desperately need him. There will inevitably be people in your
world today who are in need. The only question is, are you willing
to sacrifice for them? Lay down your phone, look someone in the
eyes, and you never know what God can do through a servant willing
to sacrifice! Austin Johnson

Last week we had another good turnout for the Monday Night for the
Master Ministry. There were several visits made before, during, and
after our meeting to members who were in nursing homes or shut in
at their own homes. The WBS ministry led by Jake Vandyke and Dave
Schmidt was well represented, too. If you are interested in the
Sewing Sisters, they meet at 2:00 pm on Mondays, and last week the
seven ladies who attended made 25 pillows. Six writers were able to
send 78 cards, notes, and encouraging thoughts to members and
visitors. (Be sure to check your church mailbox) Lessons for the
Bible School were planned; Milton Kirby continues to be a great
asset to the congregation by working tirelessly on things around
the building. Donna and her children are also some of the hardest
workers we have here; they straighten up the songbook racks, pick
up left over bulletins and make sure we have pencils and attendance
cards in the pews. There were several other ministries going on
during the hour in the food pantry and five people put together
boxes for families of patients in CCU and ICU at NAMC. Come
tomorrow night and we are certain you will find something to get
involved in for about an hour. Thank you!
