CLIMATE

Slovenia has four distinctive seasons, and with moderate temperatures, the country boasts three different types of climate; Continental in the central part, Alpine in the north-west, and Sub-Mediterranean along the coast. It is rarely too cold or too warm and is just right to enjoy all the different occasions each season has to offer.

ACCESS

Slovenia lies at the intersection of some of the most important European roads and has a well-developed and safe road network. Railway connections also allow a carefree and comfortable journey to Slovenia as all international transit trains travel through the Ljubljana railway hub. Slovenia can be reached by sea from Italy and Croatia using the fast passenger catamaran or hydrofoil. Catamarans operate in the summer season (April to the end of October) offering a once- to thrice-weekly service between Venice and Piran/Izola. When travelling to Slovenia by plane, the international Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport can be reached from many major European destinations. Slovenia’s national carrier, Adria Airways, provides regular scheduled flights to various European destinations and is also flexible in organising charter flights customised to the needs and schedules of larger groups.

FOOD & DRINK

Slovenian cuisine is a mixture of Central European (especially Austrian and Hungarian), Mediterranean and Balkan cuisine. Specialities can be discovered in 24 different culinary regions. The most prominent among these include; klobasa (sausage), zavitek (strudel), potica (nut roll), žlikrofi (stuffed pasta), golaž (goulash) and pršut (a popular air-dried smoked ham from the Karst region). Additionally, kremšnita (cream cake), a delicacy typical of Bled, has become legendary and should not be missed. Slovenia is proud of its excellent wines and the fact that it is home to the oldest vine in the world! There are also more than 20 wine roads, where it is traditional to pass from winery to winery sampling the local wines and traditional food along the way. Among the most popular are the dark red kraški teran from the Karst area, refošk from the Coast, and whites such as zelen and pinela. Wine connoisseurs rank numerous Slovenian wine-makers at the very top, and their products are proudly offered in some of the most prestigious restaurants worldwide. When visiting Slovenia, gourmet tours and wine tasting excursions are always an unforgettable experience for groups. The Coast RegionOVERVIEW

When visiting Slovenia one soon realises that it is all about quality not quantity. The 46.6 kilometres of Slovenia’s Adriatic coast surprises with its number of amazing attractions. PiranThe town is considered to be one of the most beautiful towns in Slovenia with its narrow medieval streets, aquarium, maritime museum and harbour full of boats. The coastal town of Izola is another hidden gem very much worth a visit. It features several splendid palaces built in the Venetian style, but certainly the most beautiful is the Besenghi Palace. It is one of the best preserved late Baroque monuments in Slovenia and one of the finest buildings on the coast. The Palace is home to the Izola Music School and also offers a state-of –the-art hall that can be used to host different kinds of events. The artistic features are captivating, certainly something that adds glamour to events.

One of the best cloister atrium designs in the Slovenian coastal area is presented in the Monastery cloister of Portorož. The Knight’s Hall in Brežice is a venue that participants will find breathtaking. It is (probably) the most luxuriously painted Baroque hall in Slovenia. Concerts and other cultural events are organised in the hall throughout the year and in summer it hosts the main concerts of the Festival of Early Music. Visiting Slovenia’s salt pans is a completely new experience. It is like stepping into a time machine and reaching a place you never thought existed. Of the once numerous salt pans in the Gulf of Trieste, only those at Sečovlje and Strunjan have been preserved. They are unique environments and have the status of protected cultural and natural heritage as they are the only salt pans along the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea where the entire process of salt harvesting is still carried out with traditional methods and tools that have been used for over 700 years. If you would like to try salt panning, weather permitting, a salt harvesting excursion can be organised for small groups. It is a truly unique experience which can only be taken advantage of only here. Today, the Sečovlje salt pans are the largest coastal marsh wetlands (650 hectares), and at the same time the most important Slovenian locality from an ornithological point of view with more than 288 species. Slovenia has it all. Mountains, caves, lakes, sea and even an island. Probably the most famous of all is the island in the middle of the most popular lake in Slovenia, featured in every commercial about Slovenia. It is, of course, Lake Bled and its island. The church on the island has a special wishing bell that, it is said, visitors can ring and it will make their wishes come true. There is, however, one other very important thing not to be forgotten when visiting Bled. The traditional Bled cream cake, called Kremšnita (pronounced kremschnita). It is almost compulsory to try it when coming to Bled as it is the pride and symbol of the place that has become legendary. There is nothing like the smell of freshly baked bread ... It brings out memories of happy times, wherever you go. After a short introduction and tour of the Dvor Jezeršek homestead, participants are invited to the ‘Hiša‘ room, where they join the cook in kneading the dough by hand and prepare it ready for baking in the farmhouse oven. While the dough rests participants are not left waiting, instead, they are invited to the wine cellar to taste a selection of traditional bites and local wine. The bread will be baked during dinner (approx. 45 minutes) so it can be enjoyed still warm and fresh or can be taken home to be savoured for breakfast.

How about having dinner while hanging by a cable? Sounds odd? Dangerous? Crazy? This experience is an amazing combination of culinary specialities, comfortable ambience and fantastic views in the heart of the Slovenian Alps. After public opening hours, the gondolas at the Krvavec ski resort are converted into small, hovering restaurants where panoramic views of the alpine surroundings and pampering of the taste buds with exquisite culinary creations can be enjoyed. A maximum of 4 people can enjoy a 3-course meal in a private cabin. Dinner is served alternately during two upward and downward rides. The last ride is followed by a stop at the panorama terrace and a sweet surprise. Tempted? Of course.

If you thought biathlon shooting was reserved only for professional athletes, think again. This experience provides the option to try it for yourself and to participate in this exciting and challenging sport. Biathlon is one of the most interesting winter sports which includes freestyle cross-country skiing and shooting. The shooting takes place under professional supervision, with a low caliber sports rifle on a specially prepared biathlon shooting range on the Pokljuka plateau. Organised biathlon shooting is carried out in all seasons and can be combined with cross-country skiing, cycling or hiking. Imagine the stories you will be able to tell your colleagues and family? Priceless!

There is an old fishing proverb that says: ‘Fish have to swim three times – in the sea, in oil and lastly in wine’. Keep this in mind whilst enjoying a pleasant boat trip on the Slovenian sea and the captain will prepare a seafood lunch. In the meantime the fine Istrian wine, ‘malvasia’ can be enjoyed whilst feeling the gentle sea breeze. Cruising along the Slovenian coast offers a completely different perspective of its Slovenian coastal cities. It is a very enjoyable journey that brings together socialising, being in touch with nature, and experiencing the fruits of the sea in the perfect setting.

More inclined towards active sports? Then let’s go sailing! This sailing trip begins in Izola and proceeds to Grado in Italy. Participants are actively involved throughout. Sailing is added fun when the skipper shares the experience with those on board. The basics of sailing will be learnt whilst discovering all the little tricks sailors must know. It won’t be all work though, as sailors know how to have fun and particularly enjoy the moment even if it means feeling some of the body’s muscles the next day - but it will be worth it!

Once upon a time there was a girl called Jelka and she had a magic umbrella that could turn into a balloon. One day Jelka lost her ball and she used her umbrella to fly over Ljubljana to search for it. This special Ljubljana based incentive programme, inspired by the famous Slovenian fairytale, offers a fresh and fun approach for discovering the most beautiful (and magical!) parts of the city. This could be described as a truly adventurous gourmet trip. Have you ever imagined going on a walk in the woods with a dog and a truffle expert? Well, at the beginning it might look weird but then you totally fall into it and forget about what would your mother say if she saw you digging out smelly balls from the earth. The perfect season for truffle hunting is from October to the end of January. This exciting tour starts early in the morning because it is important to be the first to search for this Istrian delicacy. The hunt takes place in the Slovenian Istria and the leader of the expedition is an experienced truffle hunter. The guide and his dog will take you on a hunt for this ‘marvel of nature’ which you will never forget.

Slovenia is one of the few countries with a large Alpine ibex population. Hunters from all over Europe who have experienced hunting in Slovenia claim there is no place more beautiful for chamois, ibex or alpine stag hunting. For those who like living an adventurous life, there is always the option to stay in one of the cabins in the centre of the hunting grounds. Small game (pheasant, partridge, hare, etc.) hunting in Slovenia is a unique experience to enjoy with friends. Hunting is organised in accordance with hunting laws by prior arrangement and booking.

The venue of the annual biathlon World Cup. Pokljuka is a beautiful place where tourism, agriculture and forestry coexist. Due to its ideal location, in the midst of extensive forests, this gorgeous resort is a cross-country skiing paradise. Cross-country skiing is a form of ski touring in which participants propel themselves across snow-covered terrain using skis and poles. Cross-country skiing is one of those types of recreational activity that offer genuine contact with the natural environment and really challenges body fitness. For those who have never tried cross-country skiing, there is no need to worry as an experienced guide will be close on hand to assist and keep you on the right track.

For those interested in an experience with a difference, original Siberian husky dog sledding is the ideal choice. It is a really unique experience that bonds participants with nature with the help of dogs and a very old way of transportation - a sled. It gives another perspective on winter transportation. Snow shoeing, a fondue dinner, cosy sleeping bags, candlelit rooms and a mountain top location. Yes, winter can be so much fun! The Igloo village, which is open from the end of December to the beginning of March, is the perfect place for a unique and unforgettable winter experience. Slovenia’s first and only igloo village is situated just a 45 minute drive from Ljubljana and is part of the ski resort of Krvavec. The village includes the Igloo restaurant with a capacity of 80, sleeping igloos for 20, and the famous Snow Patio with its ice bar. It offers a really unique winter experience with many interesting options for entertainment. A range of guided sports activities are available including entertaining snow games or even team building programmes (igloo building, igloo parties, etc.). The Igloo village offers a very special atmosphere and a fantastic out-of-the-ordinary memorable experience.

Strap on a pair of snowshoes and venture into the night-time winter wonderland of the Pokljuka plateau which is well-known as a deep snow paradise as it is interspersed with a wide range of winter walking tracks suitable for torch-lit night snow-shoe walking. Picture the scene - an indigo-blue moonlit sky, bright shining stars, and ice crystals glistening in the torchlight. It almost looks surreal and the silence of the winter night gives the feeling of being connected to nature. At the end of the walk – glossy-eyed and red-cheeked – there will be warming drinks with some ‘extras’ to help raise temperatures and lift spirits.

Exploring the underworld can be a very exciting experience, especially if following a programme of unique and fun tasks that test ones ability to be a team player and find creative solutions to challenges. Those that are brave enough, can embark on a ‘Journey to the centre of the Earth’. Teams are given a set of clues to help with solving different tasks. The more the participants work as a team, the more success they enjoy. Of course, in the end, all efforts are rewarded by the treasure found, but only upon successful completion of the final test! Venice is one of the most interesting and lovely places in the world and is within just a few hours reach of any part of Slovenia. This sanctuary on a lagoon is virtually the same as it was six hundred years ago, which gives Venice a timeless charm. Known to be the world’s only pedestrian city, and with more artistic masterpieces per square kilometer than any other city in the world, Venice never fails to impress.

Trieste - Trieste is a city and seaport in northeastern Italy and is only a few minutes away from the Slovenian border. It is situated towards the end of a narrow strip of Italian territory lying between the Adriatic Sea and Slovenia, which lies almost immediately south and east of the city. Once a very influential and powerful centre of politics, literature, music, art and culture under Austrian-Hungarian dominion, its importance fell into decline towards the end of the 20th century. Today, Trieste is a very charming city, with a quiet and lovely atmosphere, stunning architecture and a beautiful sea view. Worth seeing also by night.

Rovinj - is coastal Istria’s star attraction. It is the destination of choice for those seeking the sentimental atmosphere of times gone by. Its restricted area features picturesque houses, narrow streets and small squares still untouched by modern urbanism. Rovinj has long been known as a town with favourable and beneficial climatic features which are another reason why so many people fall in love with it and keep on returning.

Zagreb - Zagreb is the capital of Croatia and also the largest city in the country. It is situated in the north-west of the country, along the Sava River, with a population of almost one million inhabitants. It is the political, economic, cultural and scientific centre of Croatia. A well known Zagreb phrase says that ‘the only thing lovelier than Zagreb itself are its women’, giving a lovely compliment to both the city and its female citizens.
