Prefix im-• Prefix im-is from Latin, and it means

“not”• Im + patient= impatient• Someone who is not able to wait

without becoming annoyed• Im+polite= impolite • When someone doesn’t use manners

in their actions or when they speak

Greek and Latin Roots

• Knowing the meanings of Greek or Latin roots, prefixes and suffixes can help them understand a word they don’t know.

• We are going to read a story called “The Cave in the Cliff”. You are going to make a list of all the words you can find that have a Greek or Latin root. Write what you think it means.

The Cave in the Cliff• This story was about cave drawings.

Petroglyphs• Petroglyphs are pictures that are

carved into the rock

Plot• The plot is in the sequence of events

• The four parts of a typical plot on a timeline are:

• Conflict, Rising action, Climax, resolution

CLIMAX• In the story “The Day of Two

Adventures” Gram has left the lunch at home and she’s very hungry. This is the problem.

• The climax, or high point, is when Gramps suddenly comes up the mountain, and they smell something good.

• This signals me that something is about to happen to resolve the problem.

Character

Character traits in a story An author will sometimes use the

character’s actions and dialogue to help the reader understand what kind of a person they are. It helps a reader predict events based on a character’s traits.

• Attempt- effort• He made an attempt to build a shed
