PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP IN GOD’S NAME

PRAYER OF MEDITATION

As the people gather before the service begins, we encourage you to use the following prayer for meditation.

Spirit of Truth, come and search our hearts. What attention might our souls need? Where there is

resentment building, pain unaddressed, or unresolved conflict still weighing heavy, tend to our needs.

Guide us in your wisdom as we seek healing and repair. Help us to support one another in the sacred

labors of nurturing love from within. Amen.

VOLUNTARY Played by Grace Chung.

Prelude on “Brother James’ Air” — Searle Wright (1918–2004)

Language in worship: Because language has the power to shape our thinking about one another, All Saints

Church makes every effort to bring the language of worship into conformity with the principles of biblical

theology that affirm that the personhood of God embraces all expressions of gender lovingly and equally.

Therefore, in our worship, we take our Bible readings from an inclusive language lectionary, that is often

truer to original sources in references to people, and expands our concept of God beyond exclusively

masculine terms. In Prayer Book liturgies we make minimal but symbolically important changes which

denote our commitment to inclusive expression. Some historical texts that are widely known and loved are

left unaltered. The words of the liturgy are from the 1979 Book of Common Prayer. The readings are from

the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible, lectionary year A, as well as from The Message and from

Inclusive Hebrew Scriptures and New Testament published by Priests for Equality.

COLLECT OF THE DAY

Minister: God dwells in you.

People: And also in you.

Minister: Let us pray.

Remain standing; silence is kept.

Minister: O God, the strength of all who put their trust in you: Mercifully accept our prayers;

and because in our weakness we can do nothing good without you, give us the help of your

grace, that in keeping your commandments we may please you both in will and deed; through

Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever

and ever. Amen.

LESSON Seated. 9:00 Madeleine Harbison

11:15 Jerry Craig

A Reading from Deuteronomy (30:15–20).

Moses said to all Israel the words which the Lord commanded him, “See, I have set before you today life and

prosperity, death and adversity. If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I am commanding you

today, by loving the Lord your God, walking in God’s ways, and observing the commandments, decrees, and

ordinances, then you shall live and become numerous, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you are

entering to possess. But if your heart turns away and you do not hear, but are led astray to bow down to other gods

and serve them, I declare to you today that you shall perish; you shall not live long in the land that you are crossing

the Jordan to enter and possess. I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life

and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live, loving the Lord your God,

obeying God, and holding fast to God; for that means life to you and length of days, so that you may live in the land

that the Lord swore to give to your ancestors, to Sarah and Abraham, Rebecca and Isaac, and Leah, Rachel and

Jacob.”

Minister: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.

People: Thanks be to God.

A period of silence is observed following the reading.

GOSPEL Remain standing. 9:00 Lynn Jay

11:15 Mike Kinman

Minister: The Good News of Jesus as written in Matthew (5:21–37).

People: Glory is yours, O Christ.

“You have heard that our ancestors were told, ‘No killing’ and, ‘Every murderer will be subject to judgment.’ But I

tell you that everyone who is angry with their sibling is subject to judgment; anyone who says to their sibling, ‘I spit

in your face!’ will be subject to the Sanhedrin; and anyone who vilifies them with name-calling will be subject to the

fires of Gehenna. If you bring your gift to the altar and there remember that your sibling has a grudge against you,

leave your gift there at the altar. Go to be reconciled to them, and then come and offer your gift. Lose no time in

settling with your opponents — do so while still on the way to the courthouse with them. Otherwise your

opponents may hand you over to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the bailiff, who will throw you into

prison. I warn you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny. You have heard the commandment, ‘No

committing adultery.’ But I tell you that those who look lustfully at others have already committed adultery with

them in their hearts. If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away. It is better to lose part of

your body than to have it all cast into Gehenna. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it

away! It is better to lose part of your body than to have it all cast into Gehenna. It was also said, ‘Whenever a

couple divorces, each partner must get a decree of divorce.’ But I tell you that everyone who divorces — except

because of adultery — forces the spouse to commit adultery. Those who marry the divorced also commit adultery.

Again, you have heard that our ancestors were told, ‘Do not break your vow; fulfill all oaths made to our God.’ But I

tell you not to swear oaths at all. Do not swear by heaven, for it is God’s throne; do not swear by the earth, for it is

God’s footstool. Do not swear by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great Ruler. And do not swear by your own

head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black. Say ‘Yes’ when you mean ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ when you mean

‘No.’ Anything beyond that is from the Evil One.”

Minister: The Gospel of the Savior.

People: Praise to you, O Christ.

Minister: Loving God, you have connected all of life in creation but we have separated ourselves

through fear and anger.

People: Turn us from patterns that replicate pain and violence and point us in directions

that free and uplift.

Minister: Guide us to disrupt cycles of violence, to practice healing within and around, and to

create bold alternatives to norms that harm and destroy.

People: Illuminate the possibilities of radical love within and around us.

Minister: When it feels as though our choices have been stripped from us — that we are powerless

before systems of evil — give us courage to further love in the world and not escalate hostility.

People: Strengthen us to choose the path that leads to our better selves.

Minister: Let us confess our sins before God.

Silence is kept.

Minister and People:

O God, you have searched us out and known us, and all that we are is open to you. We

confess that we have sinned: we have used our power to dominate and our weakness to

manipulate; we have evaded responsibility and failed to confront evil; we have denied dignity

to ourselves and to our siblings, and have fallen into despair. We turn to you, O God; we

renounce evil, we claim your love; we choose to be made whole.

Walk Together, Children

CONSECRATION Kneeling or standing — all who are able.

Priest: From your love and in your image you created us, breathing your spirit into the dust of the earth.

When we failed to live in love, you loved us anyway, refusing to let us go. In Jesus of Nazareth

you showed us what we might become. In miracle and mystery Jesus was born, as we are born,

and lived as we might live.

In the fullness of his life, Jesus revealed the self-centeredness of our lives. So we sought to

silence him. But we could not. The resurrection and ascension revealed the indestructible power

of God’s inexhaustible love.

On the night before Jesus died he shared a meal with his disciples. He took a loaf of bread,

blessed it, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take. Eat. This is my body that I share

with you. Remember me whenever you eat, and offer your food and yourselves to the world.”

After supper, Jesus took a cup of wine. When he had blessed it, he gave it to them, saying,

“Drink, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant of forgiveness that I share with you and

with all. Remember me whenever you drink, and forgive.”

Priest and People:

Now, gracious God, we offer our thanks for this bread and wine, the fruit of field and vine,

and the body and blood of self-offering and compassion. We pray that the presence of your

Holy Spirit will sanctify our meal, that we, like Christ, may love, heal, forgive and speak truth

to all people. Amen.

Priest: And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, in the language of your heart, we are bold to say,

Priest and People:

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy Name, thy

kingdom come, thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass

against us. And lead us not into

temptation, but deliver us from

evil. For thine is the kingdom, and

the power, and the glory,

for ever and ever. Amen.

voluntad, en la tierra como en el

cielo. Danos hoy nuestro pan de

cada día. Perdona nuestras

ofensas, como también nosotros

perdonamos a quienes nos

ofenden.

BREAKING OF THE BREAD

A period of silence is kept, during which the priest breaks the consecrated bread.

Priest: We are one bread, one body.

People: We will love one another as Christ loves us.

INVITATION

Priest: The Gifts of God for the People of God.

Whoever you are and wherever you are on your journey of faith, there is a place for you at

Christ’s table. When it comes time for communion, everyone of any age is welcome to

receive either communion or a blessing.

If you wish to receive communion (the bread and wine), when you come to the front you may

stand or kneel. Hold your hands together in front of you to receive the bread, help guide the

cup to your lips or, if you prefer not to receive the wine, touch the cup when it is presented

to you.

If you wish to receive a blessing, when you come to the front you may stand or kneel. Cross

your arms over your chest, and you will be offered a blessing.

Gluten-free wafers, grape juice and smaller communion cups for those with difficulty

swallowing are available at your request on either back side rail.

Members of our Healing Ministry are available in the Chapel and Baptistery during

communion for all who wish to receive prayers and the laying on of hands. All prayers are

kept confidential. If you desire follow-up, please contact our pastoral care department.

If you have any questions or are confused about any of this, please just ask anyone near you

and they will be happy to help.

At both services, children in the chancel rejoin their families.

 Issue #9 - Feb 16, 2020

We’re Listening!  Feedback Urged as PACES Continues Rolling Out Campus Concepts  Presented by the PACES (Planning and Campus Enrichment Strategies) Task Force, 10 concepts for creating a more welcoming church campus have begun appearing on the lawn in poster form each Sunday.   Your feedback is essential to the PACES Task Force as we discern which concepts are of greatest interest to you, with the best fit for the All Saints mission and values, consistent with the PACES guiding principles. Following is a sampling of the questions asked by parishioners to date – and the answers – to keep you informed.   Comments and questions may be directed to [email protected] -- let us hear from you!

 1. What are some examples of the deferred

maintenance projects referenced?  There is a long list that includes: a new roof for Regas House, replacement of a 30-year-old air conditioning system, sprinkler systems, seismic retrofit of the old rectory, among other items. Some concepts offer the possibility of new construction that would remedy some of the deferred maintenance needs.

2. Are these 10 concepts/projects really do-able?   Yes. Each concept is do-able, with a variety of options presented for consideration, all subject to the availability of funding and the planned phasing of each project. Your feedback will allow us to prioritize.

A lack of storage space creates cluttered staff work areas in the old rectory building. Such space could be converted to more welcoming space for campus visitors and meetings.

 3. How much funding remains from the last capital

campaign?   The nearly $2M remaining is earmarked for use in the spirit for which it was raised. Options addressing the best use of those funds to address our campus, infrastructure and building needs will be presented to the Vestry. At this time, no decisions have been made about how to pay for any of the concepts being explored by PACES.

4. Has the PACES Task Force considered revenue-generating ideas among these concepts?  Yes. For example, the parking lot concept could include automated parking. Enhanced meeting facilities could be used by outside groups for a fee.

Page 25: The Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany Eucharist at 9:00 and 11 ......(Scott Hall). Sunday School and Worship will resume Feb. 23. • K-5th GRADE: 9:00 a.m. & 11:15 a.m., children attend

 5. How can I be sure that my specific interests are

represented in the concepts? I am interested in a new kitchen, for example, and better space for our choirs.  The broad concepts do cover many detailed suggestions gathered from the All Saints community. A new kitchen is considered as part of the concept describing new space for our Children, Youth and Family activities. Improved space for our music programs is considered in more than one concept. Be sure to voice your special interests and preferences – to the Vestry, to PACES task force members on the lawn or via email to [email protected]

 6. Why are we refreshing the rectory?

PACES offers a concept to remodel the old rectory—also called the office building—which currently houses staff and is in need of a seismic retrofit. PACES is not exploring modifications to the current rectory off-campus where Rector Mike Kinman lives with his family.

7. What about the operating costs for any new or improved facilities?  Operating costs will be estimated and included in the late spring presentation to Vestry. The final cost estimates and funding plan will incorporate operating costs.

 8. What is the timeline going forward for the PACES

process?   We are at a critical juncture to gather feedback from the All Saints community now to help us prioritize the concepts and options. By Summer, we expect to be developing more detailed proposals and we will conduct a funding evaluation. We will begin presenting to the Vestry this April, a process that will take some months. Our goal is to present formally to the Vestry this Fall, and Vestry members will make decisions about how we move forward. Once a project or projects have been advanced by the Vestry, the next steps will involve the development of plans for fund development, construction planning and maintenance activities.

9. Is it too late to take one of the PACES campus tours?  No—we would be delighted for you to join us. You may sign up by on the All Saints website in the “signup center” or call the church office for assistance.

 10. Will the Feb. 2 Rector’s Forum describing the 10

concepts be repeated?   While there are no plans to repeat the forum presentation, the video from Feb. 2 is now posted on the All Saints website at (http://allsaints-pas.org/paces) for your viewing.

For more information about PACES or to read past issues of the Keeping Pace bulletin, visit the PACES page on the All Saints website (http://allsaints-pas.org/paces).

Sunday Book Group:

Sundays, 2:30 ~ 4:00 p.m. Guild Room. Spanish only. 3/8-3/29 (4 sessions). Alfredo Feregrino

Thursday Afternoon Book Group: The Universal Christ“God loves things by becoming them,” Rohr writes, and Jesus’s life was meant to declare that humanity has never been separate from God—except by its own negative choice. When we recover this fundamental truth, faith becomes less about proving Jesus was God, and more about learning to recognize the Creator’s presence all around us, and in everyone we meet.
