Welcome to The Sixteen’s 2014 - 2015 SeasonThis year The Sixteen celebrates its 35th birthday, something I am immensely proud of. The ideals are still the same - wonderful bonhomie and the simple joy of performing, bringing this great music to an ever-increasing audience. We mark this milestone with an enormously varied season of concerts highlighting
the group’s versatility in a range of music spanning over 800 years.
The Choral Pilgrimage remains the backbone of our concert calendar and this year’s tour continues into the autumn with a further 15 dates. John Sheppard, Richard Davy and William Mundy produced some of the most exquisite music of the English Renaissance - this programme is simply glorious and I urge you to come and hear it. From 16th-century England to the golden age of 16th-century Seville, our 2015 Choral Pilgrimage will take you through the beautiful sound worlds of Spanish composers Francisco Guerrero and Alonso Lobo.
A personal highlight for me this winter is our UK tour of Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610. The Vespers is quite simply one of the greatest works of sacred music ever written, full of rhythmic vitality, sensuality and sheer drama. It is a work that allows us to display not only the virtuosity of our singers but also of our instrumentalists and it is a pleasure for us to take this to audiences up and down the country.
In amongst all this our season also includes an exploration into the life and work of Thomas Tallis specially commissioned by The Globe, a welcome return to the Edinburgh and Spitalfields Festivals and our ever-popular Christmas tour.
Our education and outreach programme continues to excite and inspire with projects planned for young singers and instrumentalists around our Monteverdi Vespers tour, the continued success of Genesis Sixteen, now entering its fourth year, and the development of our new education website.
Helping to make all this work possible is our ever-growing network of audiences and funders. I would like to thank you all for your generous support - without you what we do would simply not be possible.

The Choral Pilgrimage 2014The Voice of the Turtle DoveThe Sixteen continues its journey of discovery into the beautiful music of English Renaissance composers John Sheppard, Richard Davy and William Mundy. With The Arts Desk summing up the experience as ‘pure pleasure’, this is a programme not to be missed. Luckily, there are a further 15 dates lined up throughout the autumn so there is still plenty of opportunity to catch an evening of ‘Tudor polyphony at its finest’ (The Arts Desk). See pages 4 and 5 for dates.

The Choral Pilgrimage 2015Flight of AngelsIn 2015 The Sixteen takes a trip back to 16th-century Spain and more specifically to one of the biggest, richest and most cosmopolitan cities on earth – Seville. It was during this Spanish ‘golden age’, when arts and culture flourished, that Francisco Guerrero and Alonso Lobo made their mark.
Between them these two composers capture an astonishing variety of moods within their music, from ecstasy and joy to despair, longing, and devotional stillness.

Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610Monteverdi's monumental Vespers of 1610 is famed for its thrilling rhythms, grand choruses and beautiful solo movements. The Sixteen choir and orchestra will follow Monteverdi's dictum recitar cantando - speak through singing - to maximum effect, breathing new life into this glorious work.
The tour will also give us the opportunity to introduce this work to cathedral choristers up and down the country. Six groups will join The Sixteen on stage for the Sonata sopra Sancta Maria, and in Peterborough and Rochester Associate Conductor Eamonn Dougan, orchestra leader Sarah Sexton and principal players will deliver innovative Monteverdi workshop days for young singers and instrumentalists.

A Christmas CarolCentred on the chant O Magnum Mysterium (O Great Mystery), often recited at Mass on Christmas morning, this season’s tour features sumptuous works by Byrd, Lauridsen, Palestrina and Victoria, exploring how each of these composers has set the chant to music. Palestrina’s six-part motet expresses the joy and awe felt by the shepherds as they celebrated Christ's birth, while Lauridsen’s deeply spiritual piece is described by him as 'a quiet song of profound inner joy.' With Charles Ives's beautifully tender setting of A Christmas Carol and traditional carols for all, this is the perfect way to enter into the spirit of Christmas.

War and conflict from the Renaissance to the present day are the compelling subjects of this concert programme. The Restoration period under Charles II gave rise to spectacular theatrical entertainments and patriotic royal celebrations. Henry Purcell certainly played his part in supplying thrilling compositions for the Stuart court and London stage, not least in the form of The Indian Queen, his semi-opera which dramatically depicts the warring courts of Peru and Mexico just before the Spanish invasion.

John Tavener’s celebrated setting of William Blake’s The Lamb came to him ‘fully formed, so all I had to do was write it down’ (Tavener, 1982). Funeral Ikos is also a serenely beautiful work. Setting words from the service for the burial of priests, it expresses not only the awareness of the transitory nature of mortal life but a clear hope and belief in life after death.

The Sixteen is delighted to be opening James MacMillan’s new festival in Cumnock. The emotional and dramatic text Stabat Mater imagines the anguish of the Virgin Mary at the foot of the cross and has been an inspiration for many composers. This year the Genesis Foundation has commissioned three new settings of the Stabat Mater written by leading young composers from Estonia, Russia and England. These will receive their Scottish premiere alongside James MacMillan’s Miserere.

This dynamic programme of Italian and Portuguese Baroque music is at times reflective, at times uplifting and always inspired. Rebelo's sumptuous setting of Panis Angelicus is almost opulent while Melgas' Lamentations are prayerful and imbued with a sense of hope. There is no doubt, however, that the tour de force is Scarlatti's virtuosic setting of the Stabat Mater.

Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610
October release
Following the success of their Monteverdi Selva morale e spirituale recordings, The Sixteen and Harry Christophers release a work often classed as one of the most significant collections of sacred music ever written: Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610. It is a work grand in conception and structure; revolutionary techniques established in his secular music, such as recitar cantando – speak through singing – are brought to the church platform with stunning effect.
September release
Renowned for their Handel interpretations, Harry Christophers and his award-winning ensemble, The Sixteen, add to their glittering catalogue of Handel discs with this new recording. The last oratorio that he wrote, Jephtha, is also often seen as his most profound; the portrayal of Jephtha’s suffering is particularly noteworthy for its astonishing sincerity.
The Sixteen is joined by a stellar cast of soloists: James Gilchrist, Susan Bickley, Sophie Bevan, Robin Blaze, Matthew Brook and Grace Davidson.

EducationSchools and Young People We believe it is important to offer access to music, live performance and high quality tutoring for young people at all stages of their education. Our programme for schools and young people covers all ages from infants to graduates and includes individual mentoring, group masterclasses, Schools' Matinee Concerts, student workshops and our Chorister Masterclass series.
Community and WorkshopsWe offer a variety of programmes for adults: some aimed at singers, some at music scholars and others at new audiences who simply want to learn more about the group and the repertoire we sing.
Our popular Choral Workshop series has run for a number of years and offers hundreds of keen amateur singers the opportunity to work with two key members of The Sixteen: Associate Conductor Eamonn Dougan and singer and practical scholar Sally Dunkley. We also run an Insight Day, as part of the York Early Music Festival, which delves deeper into the rich musical history of the Choral Pilgrimage repertoire. This is presented by Sally Dunkley and accompanied by live examples sung by a consort of singers from The Sixteen.
Education WebsiteWe are always striving to enhance the concert experience for our audience and at the end of 2013 we launched a website dedicated to our education work. The site hosts a wealth of free resources including Insight and Education Packs, tutorials and introductory films. We hope the site caters for fans of all ilks and offers a chance to discover more about the group and the music we perform. www.thesixteeneducation.com.

Genesis Sixteen is generously supported by the Genesis Foundation
Genesis SixteenNow embarking upon its fourth year, Genesis Sixteen is a unique free training opportunity for young ensemble singers hoping to progress into the industry. In addition to high quality vocal training from Harry Christophers and Eamonn Dougan, the singers also take part in consort sessions, individual voice lessons and vocal masterclasses. In order to broaden their skills we have introduced advanced workshops on vocal health and business skills.
We’re thrilled to see the impact this programme has had on many of our alumni. Five of them have deputised for The Sixteen on its Choral Pilgrimage 2014 tour and a handful have also featured on some of our latest CD releases. Several alumni have formed their own successful groups, most recently the dynamic and vibrant Eo Nomine, and Verismo Consort, an exciting new octet based in London.
Applications for the 2015-2016 group open in November 2014 and full details can be found on our website. Genesis Sixteen’s forthcoming public performances include:

Supporting The SixteenThe Sixteen thanks all its amazing Patrons, supporters and donors. Without them the ensemble simply could not perform on a regular basis, record new CDs or deliver education and outreach workshops. And because The Sixteen receives no regular public funding - and as arts funding becomes harder to find - that financial support becomes ever more valuable. It means a great deal to us.
If, like our existing supporters, you love what we do and would like to help us take our music to new destinations, to produce new recordings and to introduce more children, families and communities to the wonder of music, please consider supporting The Sixteen. There are many ways in which you can help, from joining one of the Patrons' Circles (detailed on the following page), contributing to a recording or texting a donation at a concert. To find out more please visit www.thesixteen.com/page/support.
Whatever way you choose to get involved, you can be sure that your contribution will be put to good use and will be sincerely appreciated by Harry, the choir, orchestra and staff at The Sixteen.
We also welcome corporate sponsorship and individual gifts to support tours, recordings and our educational and community-based work. For an informal exploratory chat, please contact The Sixteen's Development Director, John Bickley, at [email protected].
