corporation will be hiring a Gladue report writer based in Sioux Lookout, with funding from Legal Aid ontario.

the Sioux Lookout report writer will be one

of three new workers, with the other two based in thunder bay and timmins.

Gladue reports relate to First nation, Métis and Inuit people charged with offences. the reports outline life circumstances specific to these groups, offering sentencing recommendations the

courts often use to consider alternatives to jail time, particularly sentencing principles that are based in Aboriginal culture. courts usually request Gladue reports when an offender with Aboriginal heritage is facing sentencing.

“the Gladue workers will be instrumental in reducing the number of

accused held in pre-trial custody,” said celina reitberger, executive director of nishnawabe-Aski Legal Services corporation.

“At the sentencing stage, judges will get the support they need to ensure the legislation which mandates seeking alternatives to incarceration, such as

restorative justice, is applied in a meaningful way. In more serious cases, sentences can be tailored to address healing.”

“We hope this new investment will help serve Aboriginal clients better. Improving access to Gladue services is an important aspect of Legal Aid ontario’s

Aboriginal Justice Strategy,” said John Mccamus, Legal Aid ontario chair.

the nishnawbe-Aski Legal Services corporation works to improve access to justice for members of nishnawbe-Aski nation, delivering its legal services in a culturally appropriate manner.

Let’s get yogurtSaturday night my

Facebook chat box popped open with a hello from cousin Lee down in Michigan. What a thrill! We have been lifelong friends of the first order, tough MacKenzie boys whenever we got together.

We drifted apart and lost touch with each other about 10 years ago.

the last time I saw Lee was at his house in Michigan when I stopped in as I was on a road trip that passed close to him. “I have some Gold tassel and some canadian club in the cupboard, and cold beer in the fridge. What

can I get for you?” he asked right away.

It was a classic beginning to a good visit, reminding me of past visits at his home in the country. We could sit for hours on a fine fall afternoon out in the yard with a case of beer and a shotgun as we talked and laughed and got caught up on our lives since we were together last. Whoever opened a fresh beer got to fling the cap as far as he could throw it while the other tried to blast it out of the sky with the 12 gauge.

We’re tough hombres, so imagine my surprise as Lee and I chatted Saturday night and

suddenly he messaged, “Sometime if you’re down this way, let’s get yogurt.”

I was shocked… ShocKeD! I can see my cousin converting to Jehovah’s Witness, even baptist (highly unlikely, but… possible), but turning into a yogurt eater? I figure he’d be more likely to turn into a Democrat.

I sat stunned, wondering what to say. the last time down he took me to the Sportsmen’s bar where we sat around in a roomful of antlers drinking tap beer, house whiskey, and eating pickled eggs from a great huge glass jar with a mouth so big you could stick your whole arm in and pluck out your own clucker from the brine. As the afternoon highlight, one of the locals pulled a chunk of

homemade venison jerky from his shirt pocket, chawed off a big hunk using only his teeth and both hands, then passed the remainder around where all the guys took turns biting off their own hunks of jerky from the steadily diminishing stump of deer meat.

now, he’s proposing to take me to a yogurt bar? I have no idea what that’ll be like. I picture a little sidewalk sign with fancy calligraphy in front of a small gingerbread house with doily curtains touting the daily special of pineapple yogurt and raspberry gelato.

As I sat silent, wondering what to say, wondering if some sort of tragedy had closed in on cousin Lee, he messaged again.

“Let’s get tougher.”I wanted to jump on

that, but had no idea what he meant. When we

were boys his father had an old car axle out in the yard, with wheel hubs still attached at each end. Lee and I would challenge each other to lift the whole works up over our heads. It was heavy. real heavy. but, after extensive grunting, swearing, wobbling and staggering around the yard we could do it, just in time to yell, “Get out of the way!” as we simultaneously let go and jumped clear while the hillbilly barbells crashed down, burying the hubs four inches deep into the hard packed earth. We were already tough.

As I sat speechless, dazed, puzzled and sad, yet another message sprinted in. “Let’s get together.”

Damn spellcheck.What kind of

algorithm turns “together” into “yogurt?”

National inquiry into the missing and murdered

Aboriginal womenI read with great

concern and disappointment in last week’s paper, the refusal of Mayor and council to support councillor timpson’s request for the Municipality to support the call for a national inquiry into the number of missing and murdered Aboriginal women in our country. the defeat of this motion not only shows a lack of support for the country moving forward in addressing this crucial issue, but comes as a surprise from a council that has repeatedly boasted about the Friendship Accord developed with First nations in our region.

When reading the

comments made during this meeting, it truly saddens me that the majority of our local representatives (who are also men) have refused to acknowledge the disproportionate number of women and girls who have been targeted specifically due to the fact they are Aboriginal.

on September 29/14 Amnesty International made the following statement: “Amnesty International and nWAc (national Women`s Association of canada) are urging the federal government to work with Aboriginal organizations to implement a comprehensive national action plan, in keeping with canada’s international human rights obligations, and for this plan to be informed an

independent national public inquiry to finally get at the root causes”.

comments made by the current mayor and council members indicate complete ignorance and a biased view in regard to the issue. however, we must remember that these few voices are not reflective of the entire community. A more appropriate response would have been to defer the decision to learn more about the issue and seek counsel from the Friendship Accord membership.

the comment “the media has hyped this story up” indicates not only a lack of knowledge about the urgent nature of this issue, but shows a complete disregard for the continual efforts of Indigenous groups who

have worked tirelessly to bring this atrocity out of the shadows and into the light of the political arena.

I want to commend councillor Joyce timpson for bringing this resolution forward, councillor cal Southhall who voted in favour, and to councillor-elect Yolaine Kirlew for recognizing the importance of addressing this in our community. It is important to note that councillor timpson has been the only representative of council who makes the effort to attend related community events; including take back the night and the october 4 Sisters in Spirit Vigil. In speaking to the fact that it was the men on council who spoke out publicly against the motion, this

does not give a positive message to young men in our community.

to those who voted against this motion, I suggest that you take some time to really understand the issue before speaking out against it. Your first lesson can be attending events in our community which provide opportunities to learn about the roots of racism and violence which continue, even within our own community. through listening to the families who are still grieving for unanswered questions, you may learn something. this is what a national inquiry is all about.

Respectfully submitted,Brenda Dovick, Executive Director Nishnawbe-Gamik Friendship Centre

Heading home for Christmas holidaysSkye Neekanco-op student

onLY three more weeks of school left, and then

Pelican Falls students will be leaving for christmas holidays. these last few weeks get pretty busy with trying to catch up on homework, doing culminating activities, and studying

for exams. It’s exciting though; just think, “In three weeks I’ll be home.”

For my christmas holiday, I plan on going to thunder bay, visiting some family members, and doing some christmas shopping, going home, and visiting more of my cousins.

I plan on doing some

skidooing, trapping, and maybe some hunting. If my plans don’t happen, then I’ll probably just stay home, visit, and watch movies.

Pelican student tristan Lastheels-Loon said, “I plan on visiting friends and family. Maybe going skidooing, waiting for christmas dinner and eating, catching

up on my favourite tV series, relaxing and not worrying about school, and possibly doing some shopping.”

this semester wasn’t easy, but we got through it. now only one more semester to go then we’re done with the school year!

Pelican student Georgette Keno said,

“this semester was a struggle, to be honest. on the bright side I made a lot of new friends, met some new people, and did some pretty fun things.”

I hope you all have safe travels home, and fun times with your families. have a safe and wonderful christmas.

to increase response times to our back lanes and parking lots.”

the public works department will be clearing the Umfreville trail up to Pine Avenue.

Last year was exceptional in terms of snowfall and cold.

“the public works department, the crew, deserves a lot of credit for all the extra work they did maintaining the roads. We’re hoping this season will be a little less involved but we are

prepared,” Jewell said.Sioux Lookout oPP

Sergeant Andrew Simpson shared, “Most importantly, we want people to ensure they take their time when travelling to their winter destinations. Give themselves extra time. Most collisions that happen on the roadways during the winter months are attributed to poor driving so we want to stress to people to drive according to the road conditions.”

he added, “Make sure that your vehicle

is maintained. We recommend using winter tires and while they are more expensive, studded tires are permitted in this area of the province.”

Simpson commented, “carry a cell phone with you in case you need to use it in the event of an emergency. 911 pocket dials are a problem throughout this area of the province and canada as well. there are things people can do to prevent that, such as locking their phones, use call confirm features, don’t let your kids play with the phone, and don’t program 911 into an autodial feature. If you

do accidently dial 911 it is important to stay on the phone and let the police dispatcher know it is not an emergency and give your location so we can attend and confirm. We are

required to attend all 911 calls.”

Simpson also advised, “Make sure you have lots of gas. take the opportunity to fill up frequently because sometimes there are road closures and you could be stranded on the highway so we want to ensure people are warm and safe in their vehicles.”

the oPP’s Festive rIDe campaign is on now and runs until January 2.

“citizens can expect an increase in rIDe checks throughout that time. this is the third year the Sioux Lookout oPP is putting on a

rIDe check team where two officers will be dedicated to doing rIDe checks,” Simpson said.

only one person was charged with impaired driving in Sioux Lookout last year during the campaign, but that did not occur at a rIDe check.

“overall Sioux Lookout oPP were pleased that charges were low and it has been that way for a number of years,” Simpson said.

In this season of holiday parties Sioux Lookout oPP are encouraging people to call cabs or use designated drivers to get home safely.

th I r t e e n students from o b i s h i k o k a a n g

elementary School and Morris thomas Memorial School took part in the first annual Lac Seul District Speech competition last Friday.

held at obishikokaang elementary School, the competitors representing Grades 3 to 8, each presented their three to five minute speech before a panel of judges, as well as proud family members.

competitors in the completion were, by grade, school and speech topic: Liam Foster, Grade 8, obishikokaang elementary School - Lady Gaga; Landon Masakeyash, Grade 7, obishikokaang elementary School - Sidney crosby; Peyton thomas, Grade 8, Morris thomas Memorial School – Water; taylor chisel, Grade 6, obishikokaang elementary School – Money; Annika trout, Grade 6, Morris thomas Memorial School – colour; Daniel bottle, Grade 7, obishikokaang elementary School – Foxes; Alanis Kejick, Grade 6, obishikokaang elementary School - My Family; carsten capay, Grade 6, Morris thomas Memorial School - Killer Whales; Quentin bearman, Grade 4, Morris thomas Memorial School – Snow; John chisel, Grade 3, obishikokaang elementary School - Kawasaki Disease; D’Arcy Gray, Grade 8, obishikokaang elementary School – Music; Xavier bearman, Grade 8, Morris thomas Memorial School – hunting; Kristiann thivierge, Grade 3, Morris thomas Memorial School - cats.

Judges were Stuart cummings, Monika orzechowska, Doris Kamenawatamin, Florence Sanderson and Dr. Michael Kirlew.

Scoring 191 out of a possible 250 points the winner of the competition was Alanis Kejick with her speech about her family.

there was a tie for second place which was broken based on the content of the speeches.

taking second place in the competition was John

chisel speaking about his journey battling Kawasaki Disease.

coming in third in the competition was taylor chisel with her speech about money.

Judge Stu cummings congratulated students for participating in the competition and having the courage to stand up and share their speeches.

Kristiann thiviergo said she choose to write her speech on cats as she has two at home and she really enjoys cats.

She said she had fun speaking in the competition and now feels more confident to speak in front of a crowd.

taylor chisel said she choose money as the topic of her third place winning speech because, “I like money because you can buy stuff.”

the young orator shared that she has a sweet tooth for pop and junk food.

She said she had fun speaking in front of those gathered and wasn’t nervous at all.

Peyton thomas chose to write her speech about water as it was the first thing that popped into her head.

She talked about the importance of water to the human body and to the earth.

She said she was a bit nervous delivering her speech, but had fun doing it.

Daniel bottle wrote his speech about foxes because, “the night before I choose a speech topic I saw a fox and I’m interested in foxes.”

he said he especially likes the colouring of foxes.

It took him a day or two to put his speech together.

he was a bit nervous delivering his speech but said, “I just went ahead and said it. I felt excited.”

Winner of the competition Alanis Kejick said she loves her family very much and that was why she wrote her speech about her family.

She said it was scary to speak in front of everyone, but confided, “My mom said to just imagine I’m talking to her only.”

Kejick was surprised and excited to win the competition and said the experience has whetted her appetite to try her hand at writing more speeches.

John chisel, the second place winner of the competition, described choosing to speak of his battle with Kawasaki Disease. “I wanted to tell them how it feels. I’ve had Kawasaki Disease since I was six months old. I love telling everyone about my Kawasaki Disease journey. I felt so special standing on

the stage and telling everyone how I feel.”

Steven Korobanik, o b i s h i k o k a a n g elementary School teacher and speech competition organizer, shared, “I started the speech competition with the intent of improving our kids’ public speaking skills and improve their self-esteem and confidence. Teachers also noticed that the students really took to writing and saw a lot of improvements in the writing skills as well. My goal is to expand the competition to other First nation communities next year through video conferencing.”

he explained, “each class at obishikokaang elementary and Morris thomas Memorial Grades 3 to 8 participated with all students writing speeches on topics

they chose themselves. class competitions were held and the top two from each grade were chosen to represent in the final competition. It is really great to see how the students gain confidence in public speaking because it is an essential skill they will need whether they become teachers, speak at graduations, weddings, funerals or if they choose to become a chief or

councillor where they would need to speak for their community… one of the great things about it as well is that the kids said they had fun doing it and look forward to doing speeches again.”

Korobanik concluded, “I thought it went really well. I was really proud of the kids just having the courage to come up and speak and to see them having fun.”

Opening night success for NLCT’s Opening NightShayla Bradley

stAff Writer

It may seem risky to perform a play all about an opening

night flop, but Northern Lights community theatre’s opening night performance of opening night had the audience in stitches, garnering hearty applause when the curtains closed.

the norm Foster play was directed by Anita Webster and produced by barbara roche. the first performance was november 27, with additional showings november 28 and 29.

It told the story of a charming couple, Jack and ruth tisdale, who celebrate their 25th anniversary with an eventful evening of theatre. Played by Laurie Walsh and Karen boyko, respectively, the Tisdales find themselves at the centre of a dramatic and often hilarious opening night experience.

Familiar faces within the community rounded out the cast. Luisito tamayo, Jake brien, Jason bailey, Anita bruins-burke, emily Matousek, and George

hoggarth starred in opening night, with each actor playing a strong role. the level of commitment and dedication to the production was evident, from the ease with which performers took to the stage to the detailed props and quick set changes between scenes.

“I thought it went very good. I’m very proud of them,” Webster enthused following the show.

She said three months of planning and rehearsing led to the opening show, a culmination of her vision for the play.

“the people who built the sets are amazing. the actors did a fantastic job, and the stage crew,” she added.

For Bailey, a first-time actor with northern Lights, it was a rewarding experience.

“For a thing this complex, to have that much moving parts, I think we did excellent tonight,” he said.

opening night jitters were out of the way after the first show, and he looked forward to improving the performance even more for the next two evenings.

“I’m glad we got

the first one under our belts,” bailey laughed.

Part of the success of the theatre group is the sense of teamwork, according to bailey.

“We have fun up there,” said bailey. “We have a really good cast. there are so many different personalities

and they blend so well together. We make sure we support each other and if we’re feeling nervous we’re giving hugs.”

the theatre group is always looking for show suggestions, board members, and volunteers. Any proposals, suggestions,

or letters of interest can be sent to [email protected].

“Anita’s got something going really good here,” concluded bailey. “She’s doing a really good job of seeking out actors in the community and putting together some really spectacular plays.”

Hockey Academy program starts

at QEDHSStudents are well

engaged in Queen elizabeth District high School’s new hockey Academy program. this program allows students to participate in on and off-ice activities related to hockey during the school day. this is the inaugural year of the program headed by QeDhS teacher and hockey fanatic Jason MacMillan.

the program is open to both male and female students who have come from a range of hockey programs and are equipped with various levels of fundamental skills and knowledge. the student core consists of

hockey beginners, house league and competitive league players, as well as members from the QeDhS boys hockey team.

this unique opportunity was discussed by staff and administration in the spring of 2014 as it has already been implemented and active for a few years at beaver brae Secondary School in Kenora and is a popular commodity in schools across the country.

A hockey canada developed curriculum enables students who have a passion for hockey to engage in on-ice skill development drills, exhibition games, and hockey canada skills testing assessments.

currently the hockey

academy class is composed of four on-ice sessions per week (Monday to thursday) with one in-class session that varies between off-ice workouts, in-class lectures and video analysis, and study hall sessions to allow students to stay on track in their other courses.

All hockey academy students are educated in all scopes of the game of hockey including health and nutrition, fitness, and goal setting. there is a program fee for the hockey academy, which includes four ice times per week, exhibition games, and a school-year long membership at the Sioux Lookout recreation centre.

the program currently

has 24 registered students who reside in communities all across northern ontario. An authentic and relevant learning opportunity like this keeps students engaged in school and helps teach them fundamental skills they will continue to use into adulthood. For a full year course each student can earn up to two credits (one credit per semester).

We are pleased with all the support our community has offered in order to develop and run a unique program like this. A huge thank you goes out to the Sioux Lookout recreation centre and the staff for making many accommodations to ensure this program

runs efficiently.If you have any

questions about the program or wish to register please contact Mr. MacMillan at QeDhS at (807) 737-3500 ext 1228

or email him at [email protected]

Sioux Mountain hosts annual junior volleyball tourney

Shayla BradleystAff Writer

It was a busy day on the courts november 26 as Sioux Mountain

Public School hosted the Dryden area junior volleyball tournament.

eleven teams competed

in the tournament, which takes place every year. there were two teams from Sioux Mountain, new Prospect, and St. Joseph’s schools, and a team each from obishkokaang, Ignace, Sacred heart, open

road, and Lillian berg schools.

For the second year in a row, the winning team was from St. Joseph’s School. the second place team was obishkokaang and new Prospect came in third.

SMPS teacher Matt craig said the tournament was a two pool round robin format.

“the top team in each pool played the second team in the opposite pool as a semi-final,” he

explained. “Winners of that game played for first place. the losing teams of that game played each other for third place.”

craig said the teams had a lot of fun and showed good sportsmanship.

“It was great,” he said. “It went really smoothly.”

Volunteers from Queen elizabeth District high School refereed the games and SMPS students kept score.

Sioux Mountain Public School students compete in a November 2014 volleyball tournament.

Friendship centre welcomes guests to online homeShayla Bradley

the nishnawbe-Gamik Friendship centre has a new

presence on the Internet.the centre launched

its updated website november 26. the new page, located at ngfc.net, boasts slick graphics, photos and information about staff and board members,

an image gallery, program descriptions, career listings, and an event calendar.

the centre and the web developers put a focus on local information and content.

“We really wanted ‘us’ to be represented,” said brenda Dovick, executive director of the Friendship centre. “In the beginning there were

some stock photos so we had local photographers come in. they sat during culture night and took pictures, and came in during the elders’ lunch.”

brent Wesley and Adrienne Fox snapped the photos for the gallery, which Dovick said would be updated regularly.

the centre started working on the web

update last spring, said Dovick.

“It’s been really good,” she said, noting she was pleased with the way the site turned out.

the message on the home page is a nod to welcoming people into one another’s homes, said Dovick, explaining it was her way of

welcoming guests to the friendship centre’s new online home while encouraging them to come to the actual physical location.

Memories & Celebrations of Life

Obituaries

Dad decided it was time to go and he quietly slipped

away after a brief battle with brain cancer.

Murray is survived by his children, Steven (barbara), bjorn (Shelley) and Dorothy; his grandchildren, James, Sarah, Madisson, rachel and tanner; brothers John (Pat) and Allan (Laura); half-sister Jonina ellen; sisters-in-law Deanna and Gladys, as well

as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Murray is predeceased by his wife Ida, his parents thorstein and osk, brothers barney (Killed in Action) and cecil; sisters emily, Lorraine, Julia, Anne and half-sister ethel.

Murray was born in a log cabin on the family farm in the r.M. of South cypress river, Mb. From the stories told, he and his brothers had many wonderful adventures on the farm. As a young man, Murray lived in Winnipeg working to fi nd his niche in life. Fate stepped in and he found

himself at the doors of the central t.b clinic. they offered him a position doing X-rays and his career was set. Moving around with X-ray found him in Morris hospital where he met a young nurse named Ida who was working until her green card was approved for the U.S. they were married and a new adventure began. they moved to Winnipeg where Steven was born, then on to Swan river and bjorn came into their lives. eventually, Murray took a position at the Zone hospital in Sioux Lookout, the move brought Dorothy into

his life. through the years he was an X-ray technician, Ultrasound tech, then being promoted to the head of both departments. he always enjoyed the challenge with changes in ultrasound. he retired after 38 years of service.

After Ida passed away, Murray moved back to Winnipeg. he has spent the last ten years in the company of his brothers and sisters. coffee Saturdays at Allan and Laura’s will never be the same. Murray enjoyed his daily visits to his local McD’s for coffee and conversation with old and

new friends.

his passing has left a hole in many lives, he will be remembered as a kind, gentle, intelligent person with a sly sense of humour. he liked a good joke. he was the kind of fellow when he thought it was time to go he just put on his hat and he was out the door. (he wasn’t being rude, he was just being Dad).

the family would like to thank Dr. M. coodin for his care and concern. We would also like to thank Dr. Koal and Dr. West for the speed in which they took over Dad’s care. Also, the

wonderful people at cancer care Drivers Program and radiation therapy. Without them, we would have been lost.

In lieu of fl owers, please forward donations to the canadian cancer Society transportation Program.

Funeral service will be held on tuesday, December 2, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at chapel Lawn Funeral home, 4000 Portage Avenue.

OPTA celebrating 50th anniversary seasonTim Brody

AssociAte editor

thIS is a milestone year for the Sioux Lookout ojibway

Power toboggan Association.the snowmobile club

is celebrating its 50th anniversary and celebrated the milestone season with a pancake breakfast last Sunday. It was attended by approximately 50 people.

Part of the club history is recorded in tracks beside the Water

Volume 3.An excerpt reads,

“the club met in private homes for the first couple of years until the property on Abram road was purchased. It came complete with the original log structure which required considerable work to make it habitable. It had no electricity and no water. We managed for 26 years with alternate facilities, including a propane lighting system,

calling the cabin “home” until 1992 when the new building with attached garage was constructed.”

Lorraine bennett, club secretary, remembers the old log cabin.

She and husband ron have been members of the club for 40 years.

“We moved here 41 years ago. this was the first function we came to. they were having a drive for new members. We’ve met a lot of friends. It’s just very peaceful riding the trails here,” bennett shared.

Mike Starratt and tracey ellek have been members of the club for many years and are co-organizers of the local Snowarama for easter Seals Kids.

Starratt described being part of the club. “It’s been good. It’s fun. the best part of the season for me is when Snowarama has gone off without a hitch, and we beat the previous year’s total usually.”

Last year’s Snowarama

raised over $13,000.this year’s event will

take place January 31.People can register or

pledge Starratt and other local riders online.

“It’s something we like doing. It’s snowmobiling to support kids,” he said.

the club will be holding the annual poker derby February 6 and 7.

Starratt has been snowmobiling his whole life and commented, “there’s nothing better than a nice day on the lake, the freedom.”

ellek commented on snowmobiling, “I was raised doing it and it’s something I enjoy doing with family and friends. We have beautiful

trails here.”Dianna Ayotte is a

local StoP (Snowmobile Trail Officers Patrol) Officer and snowmobile driver training instructor.

She will be instructing a snowmobile driver training course this weekend for youth aged 12 to 15 and urges anyone interested to contact the rec centre at 737-1994 about registering for the course.

Ayotte has been a member of the snowmobile club since 1991.

“I came from hudson and was snowmobiling there back in the ‘60s and ‘70s and I gave it up for a few years and moved to Sioux

Lookout in ‘91 and got involved with the club,” she explained.

“Friends, the wilderness, working together with our group of volunteers. It’s a great organization,” she said.

“our trails are awesome. I’ve ridden stateside and in southern ontario and here we have trails where you aren’t constantly crossing roads,” she concluded.

“Anybody that buys a trail permit automatically becomes a member of our snowmobile club,” bennett explained.

“Just drop in, give us a call, contact our club members,” Ayotte urged.

“today I saw a number of people I hadn’t before. It’s always great to see new faces out. this is our 50th year so we encourage people to check us out,” Ayotte added.

“It’s always great to have new people out,” ellek concurred.

trail permits are available at Mascottos and bumper to bumper.

the snowmobile club maintains 150 kilometres of trail each season spanning halfway to Ignace and Dryden.
