Festival of Flowers PaintOut Winners
On May 16, visitors to the T.C. Steele State Historic Site had an opportunity
to watch local and regional visual artists at work creating paintings the way Hoosier Group Impressionist painter T.C. Steele created his paintings--
outside and in the open air—during the site’s annual Festival of Flowers PaintOut .
“With the gardens in full bloom, it was an opportunity to enjoy the contribu-
tions of Mrs. Steele the gardener as well as the legacy of Mr. Steele the
painter,” said T.C. Steele State Historic Site Manager Andrea deTarnowsky. Participants and guests also enjoyed an outdoor concert by Brown County’s
very own Mel Chance and the Noteables.
Winners were chosen by a panel of three judges. This year’s judges included Dick Ferrer (Nashville) a professional painter and co-owner of the Ferrer Gallery; Connie McClure (Rockville), long-
time art educator in the Rockville schools who has been named Indiana Art Educator of the Year; and Bonnie Sklarski (Bloomington) an award-winning painter and retired faculty of Indiana University’s Henry Radford Hope School of Fine
Art. The People’s Choice awards were selected through secret ballot by artists and visitors.

Sunday at Home
One Sunday each month this summer we will be recreating the Steele’s Sunday at Home events, during which the Steeles would entertain their neighbors with activities, entertainment, and in some cases, light refreshments. Admission to Sunday at Home is covered in the site’s regular admission fee and includes a tour of the historic buildings. There will be a reduced fee if participants do not want to tour the buildings. Friends of T.C. Steele members are free!

Introducing Sophie Schulz, Summer Intern
When you visit the site this summer you will probably encounter a bright, new smiling face. As the programs intern, Sophie Schulz is assisting with marketing and networking
to bring more public awareness to the site. Her projects include planning the “Sunday at Home” ice cream social on July 19 and scheduling entertainment and food vendors for the
paint out in September. Rekindling an appreciation for volunteers and working with
Brown County art groups on the Renaissance Weekend are priorities for Sophie.
Sophie is from Ft. Wayne, Indiana and is a graduate of Southside High School. She will
be a senior at Indiana University this fall pursing a dual major in Tour Management and Event Planning in the School of Public Health and German.
Julie Harpool Grimes Hired as Site Interpreter
Julie started her job as interpreter at the site on June 21. She will be conducting tours of the buildings for individuals and groups as well as assisting with office duties. The
mother of two grown sons, Benjamin and James, Julie holds a B.S. in philosophy and
earned a M.S. in Library Science from Indiana University in 2014. She is currently working on a second master’s degree in outdoor recreation at I.U. Originally a native
of Plainfield, Indiana, Julie is in the process of completing requirements for Indiana Master Naturalist through the DNR. As an environmentalist, she is certified with
Project WILD, an environmental education program. Julie said she was interested in
working at the T.C. Steele State Historic Site as she could combine her love of nature and the outdoors with her librarian background in research, history and archiving.

Historic garden fans will soon be seeing a lot of rock and dirt moving in the Formal Garden, as site staff and contractors prepare to install irrigation and to widen and level walkways. You won’t be seeing a lot of planting yet—that will come later—first comes the infrastructure to prepare the way.
Maintenance supervisor Anthony Joslin and seasonal employee Eric Engleking have already been hard at work, moving more of the historic peonies and other plant materials into temporary holding beds to protect them from being trampled and damaged. Anthony and Eric will soon be joined by temporary employees Keegan Carter and Brandy Couch, who will help with heavy digging and stone-moving. Designscape Horticultural Services has been selected as the contractor to install ADA-accessible stone walkways, electrical service, parking pull-off areas, and the other work for which staff is not equipped.
Meanwhile, site staff met with prospective bidders on June 16 to go over specifications to reconstruct walkways around the lily ponds. Although the early-season focus is on the Formal Garden, if all goes well the lily pond gardens will be getting lots of attention toward the end of the season.
Additional donations have come in to improve gardens near the entrance
arches . . . which also brings up a bit of sad news. The front gate has been
temporarily closed for safety reasons, due to damage of the arches after
being struck by a vehicle. Engineers are working on a fix.
Stop by the site soon to look at finalized garden plans and view the chang-
ing seasonal show. As you can see, the butterflies are enjoying it, too!
Selma Steele’s Formal Garden Renovation
Update by Andrea deTarnowsky
Selma Steele Reincarnated
At the last paint out, Selma Steele, carrying a basket of freshly cut flowers, greeted visitors and participants among the gardens she created. “Selma” was brought to life by Sharon Fansler, former teacher, retired nurse and amateur painter from Shelbyville, IN.
Sharon initiated the role of Selma at last year’s Murder Mystery which sparked an interest in portraying Selma at future events. After extensive research into Selma’s life and times, Sharon developed her character includ-ing making her own costumes based on the style of dress Selma could have worn. Selma has also made an appearance at the Indiana State Museum
talking to visitors during a presentation on Historical Women of Indiana. Look for Selma to be at the House of the Singing Winds during future special events as well.
Sharon (Purdue graduate) is married to Steve Fansler (IU graduate). They are both currently real estate brokers and the parents of five children and 10 grandchildren.

Shirley Comes to Site to Visit New Painting Rotation Installed in Large Studio
Visitors have the opportunity to view a new rotation of Steele’s paintings in the large studio until Spring, 2016, with the possibility of a few additions or switch-outs this fall.
There are several favorites in this new group including a portrait of Steele’s son Shirley
and views of Selma’s garden. Scenes of Indianapolis and several paintings done when Steele was studying in Munich are also in the exhibition. Of course, many of the artist’s
popular impressionist landscapes are showcased as well as two rare seascapes. Artifacts
such as Steele’s painting tools, clothing and portrait busts are also on display.
We invite you to bring your family and friends to the site soon to appreciate Steele’s artistic legacy and enjoy the beauty and solitude of the countryside this summer.
Painting Conservation
The picture to the right (now on display in the large studio) has been restored
thanks to contributions to the Friends of T.C. Steele painting conservation fund. You may recall that a “lost” Steele painting was discovered during a painting
restoration project a couple of years ago. The care and maintenance of Steele’s
works is vital to the preservation of his artistic legacy.
If you would like to make a donation to the painting conservation fund, please
contact the Friends at [email protected] or visit www.tcsteele.org.

Historic Marker to be Dedicated
An application for an historic marker for the Tinker-Talbott Place Artist Studio in Indianapolis where T. C.
Steele took up residence in June, 1885 and worked until 1901, was approved by the Indiana Library and
Historical Board in October, 2014. The marker topic
exhibits local, statewide and national/international significance related not only to Steele’s career and
accomplishments during the years he worked at the Tinker-Talbott Place but also to the accomplishments
of the Society of Western Artists, the Hoosier Group
and the Art Association of Indianapolis.
Friends board member David Steele (a distant relative
to T.C. Steele) initiated the “rigorous” process for get-ting the historic marker. Four new markers, including
the one for Steele, were selected for 2015. Currently
there are 575 markers in the State of Indiana.
David Steele commented, “I think it’s great that we
finally have a marker identifying Steele’s work and contribution to the arts movement in Indianapolis at
the turn of the century.”
We encourage Friends of the T.C. Steele State
Historic Site to be present at the dedication of
the marker and help celebrate Steele’s legacy at a reception following the presentation.
