ABOUT YUHUA SECONDARY SCHOOL

SCHOOL HISTORY OF YUHUA SECONDARY SCHOOL

Yuhua Secondary School started in January 1986 with Mr Loh Weng Kheong as its first Principal. On 16 September 1988, Yuhua Secondary School was officially declared opened by the Guest-of-Honour, Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon, then Member of Parliament for Yuhua GRC. Since its inception in 1986, under the leadership of its seven Principals, Yuhua Secondary has always strived to provide a student-centric, values-driven education for all.

The school underwent the Programme for Rebuilding and IMproving Existing Schools (PRIME) from 2013 to 2014. With the completion of PRIME, facilities such as the indoor sports hall, an auditorium, barrier-free access features and special learning venues have created more opportunities to provide a more conducive and inclusive learning environment. On 30 April 2015, the new school campus was officially declared opened by Mr Desmond Lee, then Minister of State, Ministry of National Development and Advisor to Jurong GRC Grassroots Organisations. A tree named Averrhoa carambola L, was planted to signify the school’s commitment to environmental protection as well as to symbolise the partnership between school and community in nurturing the young.

Driven by the school’s philosophy, Every Student Our Responsibility, the school carried out a series of Yuhua Conversations with key stakeholders to envision the school’s future directions in providing a holistic education that prepares Yuhuans to thrive in the fast-changing world. The year-long Yuhua Conversations culminated in a new set of school vision, mission and values.

SCHOOL HISTORY OF SHUQUN SECONDARY SCHOOL

Shuqun Secondary School, originally known as Tuan Cheng Public School, was founded in 1925. The school was later renamed Seh Chuan School in 1933 when it was relocated to Jalan Seh Chuan and it catered to the primary level. The school expanded its facilities over the years. The school building was extended in 1951, 1957 and in 1977, a six-storeyed annex was erected to cater to the growing education needs of the school population.

In 1958, the secondary school started operating. Seh Chuan School was renamed as Seh Chuan High School when it became a full school with primary and secondary classes under the late principal, Mr. Ng Kian Peng. The Chinese name of the school remained ‘Shuqun’. As early as in 1978, Seh Chuan High School started the first batch of pupils for English stream classes in the primary school. This kickstarted the bilingual curriculum in the school which was far ahead of all Singapore schools, teaching English as a first language. In 1980, the primary school expanded its enrolment to include a kindergarten class.

The school began operating as a government school in 1983 and later adopted the name of Shuqun Secondary School when it relocated to Jurong East in 1985. Shuqun underwent on-site PRIME from 2008 to 2011. The new school premise was officially opened on 14 April 2012.

COMING TOGETHER

On 20 April 2017, MOE announced the merger of Shuqun Secondary with Yuhua Secondary in 2019. Embarking on the new developmental milestone, staff and students have worked together to co-create the process and participate in joint learning experiences as both schools come together to form a larger family.

CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAMMES 2019

IntroductionA holistic education provides Yuhuans with a broad and deep foundation for lifelong learning. Besides academic learning, equally important is the development of values and life skills in each Yuhuan.

Complementary to the academic curriculum, the co-curricular programmes offer Yuhuans learning experiences to discover their strengths and pursue their areas of interest and talents. These include Co-Curricular Activities (CCA), Values-in-Action (VIA) programme, Applied Learning Programme (ALP) and Learning for Life Programme (LLP). They provide Yuhuans with multiple opportunities to build character, promote holistic experiences in social, emotional and physical well-being and help hone leadership skills.

Co-Curricular Activities (CCA)CCA is an important and integral part of every Yuhuan’s holistic education. The CCA framework focuses mainly on character formation as well as skills, knowledge and 21st century competencies development. Through participation in CCA, Yuhuans will discover their interests and talents while developing values and competencies, contributing towards their holistic character formation, social learning, physical development and actualisation of personal attainment.

CCA participation is compulsory for all students. Every Yuhuan is expected to take part in one school-based CCA from the four groups as their Main CCA. The four groups comprise of Physical Sports, Uniformed Groups, Visual and Performing Arts, and Clubs & Societies.

CCA Information and ScheduleAll CCA are conducted outside curriculum time. CCA sessions will be conducted on the designated compulsory CCA day, Friday (2.30 to 5.30 pm). When the need arises, CCA sessions will be conducted on Tuesday (3.00 to 6.00 pm). Concert Band, Boy’s Brigade and Volleyball members may have to attend Saturday sessions while cadets in the Uniformed Groups are required to attend HQ events throughout the year. Notice and information will be issued to parents for the additional CCA sessions or/and any changes in CCA schedule.

CCA Attendance and Active ParticipationAttendance with active participation during CCA sessions is compulsory and absence from CCA is taken seriously. Yuhuans who are absent must produce a medical certificate. Yuhuans who fail to attend CCA are subjected to disciplinary measures which may adversely affect their conduct grade. An adverse conduct grade may impact Yuhuans’ chances of receiving awards that may be available to them.

AttireStudents must be properly attired for CCA. If the CCA does not have a set of its own training attire, students are expected to wear the school PE T-shirt and school shorts for physical activities. Free uniform will be made available for all new cadets in the Uniformed Groups.

CO-CURRICULAR GRADING SCHEME LEAPS 2.0 FOR STUDENTS

The Co-Curricular Grading Scheme LEAPS 2.0 awards level of attainment in Leadership, Achievement, Participation and Service:

Leadership This domain recognises Yuhuans’ leadership development. Recognition is accorded to Yuhuans’ ability to take charge of personal development, work in a team and assume responsibilities in service of others. In addition to formal leadership appointments, participation in student leadership modules/workshops, the National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) and leadership positions in the school, CCA or student-initiated/student-led projects will also be recognised.

Achievement This domain recognises Yuhuans’ representation and accomplishment in co-curricular involvements beyond the classroom. Opportunities for representation and accomplishment present valuable learning experiences for Yuhuans to learn discipline, resilience and develop their character. Yuhuans may represent the school or organisations endorsed by the school. Recognising external opportunities better caters to Yuhuans’ diverse interests and talents. It also recognises the community’s role in developing the child.

• Representation refers to being selected and endorsed by the school or an organisation endorsed by theschool (e.g. the community club or national association) to contribute, perform or compete. It need not be tied to his/her CCA in school.

• Accomplishment refers to attaining accolades and awards at competitions, festivals, performances, exhibitions, conferences and symposiums where the student represents the school or other organisationsendorsed by the school.

Levels of Attainment for the four domains:DOMAINS Lowest Level of Attainment Highest Level of AttainmentLeadership

1 5AchievementParticipationService

Participation This domain recognises Yuhuans’ participation in one school-based Co-Curricular Activity (CCA). Recognition is based on the number of years of participation and exemplary conduct and active contribution to the CCA. Sustained engagement in the same CCA allows for progressive development of character, skills, knowledge and friendships, and will be accorded higher recognition. To attain level 1 under the Participation domain, Yuhuans must have participated in a CCA for 2 years with at least 75% attendance for each year.

Service This domain recognises Yuhuans’ development as socially responsible citizens who contribute meaningfully to the community. Every secondary school student will contribute at least 6 hours per school year to the community. They can choose to embark on a Values-In-Action project (VIA). Students will be recognised for the time they put into planning, service and reflection when participating in a VIA project.

Recognition of Students’ Co-curricular AttainmentAt the end of the graduating year, Yuhuans’ co-curricular attainment will be recognised according to Excellent/Good/Fair. The level of attainment will be converted to a bonus point(s) which can be used for admission to Junior Colleges/ Polytechnics/ Institutes of Technical Education (JC/Poly/ITE)*.

In Yuhua Secondary School, we understand that leadership is no longer seen as the domain of a few who hold the expertise or authority, but is distributed and shared by all members of the group. As such, we aim to develop every Yuhuan with foundational leadership qualities and competencies that will help them to be future-ready.

We believe that there is “A leader in every Yuhuan” and our tiered leadership development programme focuses on character-building for Yuhuans to first be able to lead themselves before becoming inspiring and compassionate leaders who lead others in their classroom, CCA, school and the community.

The Student Leadership Challenge model provides a theoretical framework for the school to guide and develop leadership in our Yuhuans. Our student leadership training integrates the learning of the 5 Practices of Exemplary Leadership with the acquisition of leadership competencies such as communication (inter-personal and public speaking), goal setting and planning (event management), delegating and mentoring.

LEARNING FOR LIFE PROGRAMME – DEVELOPING INTEREST AND TALENTS IN MUSIC

Music-Empowered Learners, Our Dynamic Yuhuans

The school’s Learning for Life Programme (LLP) – M.E.L.O.D.Y. (Music-Empowered Learners, Our Dynamic Yuhuans) is designed to encourage self-discovery, build character and to hone skills through the learning of music. In the process of learning music, Yuhuans often strive to think ‘out of the box’ and are given opportunities to inject new ideas. It builds a spirit of adventure and develops critical thinking in the process. With this in mind, music becomes a natural platform to nurture and better prepare Yuhuans to thrive in the VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous) world.

M.E.L.O.D.Y. is under the umbrella of the school’s Aesthetic framework CLiPTArt (Confident and Lively Persons through Art) which hinges on 3 main levels of engagement, namely Exposure, Experience, and Expression (below).

All Secondary One Yuhuans will be introduced to our distinctive programme through Camp M.E.L.O.D.Y. – a music-infused orientation camp. Opportunities will be created to develop Yuhuans’ talents and interest in arts and music as part of their unique Yuhua Experience. All Yuhuans will also widen their musical knowledge through planned learning journeys and music-related assembly programmes. School-wide platforms such as Yuphonic Renditions, Lunchtime M.E.L.O.D.Y. and the Y Factor are created to actualise talents and recognise the strengths of Yuhuans in music. To find out more about our LLP, please visit http://www.yuhuasec.moe.edu.sg/the-yuhuaexperience/ melody.

13

APPLIED LEARNING PROGRAMME - CODING, DESIGN THINKING and ROBOTICS (CODER)

The school’s Applied Learning Programme, CODER (Coding, DEsign Thinking and Robotics) aims to cultivate an innovative and design thinking mind-set in students through a curriculum that encourages them to solve real and authentic problems through coding and robotics. The students develop proficiency in analytical thinking and come up with solutions and responses beyond rote or rule-based ones. Through CODER, they appreciate the range and power of coding and robotics, and foster an interest in, enjoyment of, and confidence in the use of digital technology. The CODER curriculum introduces Scratch and micro-controller programming to students to provide a basic coding experience. Through Scratch and micro-controllers, all students will go through a series of structured programmes where they will be equipped with essential content knowledge on the programming languages, robotic basics, tools, and problem solving. CODER’s unique curriculum emphasises STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics)-related, project-based learning. It engages students in a series of challenging STEAM projects designed to connect classroom instruction to real world problems. 3D printing technology will be introduced as one of the platforms to realise their ideas in solving problems. CODER is also balanced with a focus on soft skills including presentation and communication. Students are required to work in teams for data research, information analysis, and field work that will involve critical and inventive thinking, reasoning and decision making. CODER provides a platform for students to understand the digital technologies around them and prepares them to embrace future digital challenges. By infusing core academics with authentic STEAM-related work, CODER prepares students who are motivated to explore further in this domain to take up GCE ‘O’ Level Electronics or GCE ’N’ Level Mobile Robotics, an applied subject offered at upper secondary level.

POSITIVE EDUCATION @ YUHUA SECONDARY SCHOOL

Our AimTo become a Positive Education School

What is Positive Education?Positive Education is about empowering studentswith the skills of well-being and achievement toflourish in any environment

What is Well-Being?Well-being is about having a growth mind-set, finding joy andmeaning in what I do and leveraging on my strengths toachieve and contribute to society

How Am I Feeling? ■ Do I enjoy what I do even when the task is difficult? ■ Do I feel proud about the things I do? ■ Where am I on the Mental Health Continuum below?

How Can Positive Education Help Me?

■ We cannot change our circumstances but we can change how we approach them

■ Research shows that when we feel good and do good, we achieve better grades, have better long term memory and grasp concepts faster and become more resilient in stressful situations

MAKING THINKING VISIBLE – USE OF THINKING ROUTINES

To enhance Yuhuans’ abilities in assimilating new knowledge, concepts and building understanding across subject areas, thinking routines are introduced as a part of Yuhuans’ learning experience. Adopted from the thinking routines featured in the book titled, Making Thinking Visible1, these research-based thinking tools will guide Yuhuans to acquire the eight high-leverage thinking moves to foster understanding:

The key thinking routines commonly used across subject areas are as follow:

SEVEN STRATEGIES OF ASSESSMENT AS LEARNING

Where Am I Going?Strategy 1: Set clear learning targets and understand the criteria for success.

(Make a commitment to set learning target(s) each lesson such as “Today, I am learning …”)

Strategy 2: Learn from examples and models of strong and weak work.(Invite friends to share their work to understand what constitutes a good piece of work (suc-cess criteria) / form study groups or study buddies).

Where Am I Now?Strategy 3: Regularly seek feedback (from teachers/peers) to improve own learning.

(Am I heading towards my learning target? What did I miss out?)

Strategy 4: Learn to self-assess and set goals for next steps.(Take responsibility of my learning and make plans to achieve the learning target(s))

How Can I Close the Gap?Strategy 5: Analyse my learning needs to determine my next steps in learning.

(Identify specific learning areas to focus: “To achieve my learning targets, I need to work on…”)

Strategy 6: Reinforce learning through practice with feedback (focussed revision).(Look for opportunities to strengthen my understanding, e.g. participating in activities, prac-tice exercises, etc.)

Strategy 7: Track my own learning, reflect on my learning progress, and share my progress with my teachers & those who care about my learning.(Ask “What new knowledge have I developed?”, “What are my strengths and areas for im-provement?”, “What were the factors which contributed to my success?”, “What do I need to continue to develop or work on?”

8 WAYS TO STUDY BETTER‘Some people dream of success, while others wake up and work hard at it.’

~ Winston Churchill1 Draw up a revision time-table and allocate time

for homework, break/exercise, and revision (see below).

5 Listen actively in class, take down notes and review the notes before beginning an assignment.

2 Bring home the materials you need for revision such as textbooks, notes, etc.

6 Make connections between concepts or ideas instead of memorising the information.

3 Find a conducive study area and organize your study space. Ensure the study area is separated from your relaxation area.

7 Studying requires practice. Ensure you attempt practice questions and apply your learning.

4 Avoid any distraction. Put away your mobile phone or turn off the television while studying.

8 Schedule consultations with your teachers after school to clarify your doubts.

necessary actions to re-direct Yuhuans towards the responsible use of technology which may include confiscation of devices, loss of usage privileges for a period of time, supervised use of devices, referral to the Police or other enforcement agencies.

10. Notice of Use of School Media• Photographs or video images of you or your legal guardians may be taken during school

activities and events such as classroom lessons, CCA, school camps, or school concerts. • The school may use and publish such photographs or video recordings in school publications,

the school’s website, social media channels, or other communication channels.

AWARD OF CONDUCT GRADE

1. The Conduct Grade will be reflected in Yuhuans’ Progress Reports. Table 1 shows the marks and the corresponding Conduct Grades.

Marks/ % Conduct Grades>90 Excellent

75 - 90 Very Good60 - 75 Good50 - 60 Fair

<50 PoorTable 1

27

2. The computation of the total score takes into consideration three components:a. Personal Qualities or PQ (50%): The personal qualities, at 50%, constitutes the highest

weighting of the Conduct Grade. Yuhuans will be assessed by their form teachers by exhibiting behaviours that reflect the school values. See Table 3 for a more detailed description of the various achievement levels. The achievement for each of the value will be converted into a score and aggregated to compute the overall PQ score.

b. Attendance during CCA (15%): Yuhuans without CCA will be awarded 0% for CCA attendance. It is mandatory to participate in at least one CCA.

c. Demerit points (35%): Table 2 provides some indications of the demerit points for certain offences and is not meant to be exhaustive. This merely serves as a guide and the final demerit points given may be adjusted according to the severity and frequency of the offence.

As the school aims to correct undesirable student behaviours through collaborative and restorative practices, Yuhuans will be given opportunities to reflect on their wrongdoings and show remorse by way of service to the school or community. In such cases, Yuhuans may have their demerit points reduced at the school’s discretion. For instance, Yuhuans may be given a reduction of one demerit point upon completion of four hours of voluntary work, over and above the expected norms expected of all Yuhuans.
