Irvington Friendly CareExcels In Healthcare

Irvington Friendly Care has 110 years experience between the staff of physicians and the medical staff.

The building originally was constructed for and occupied by the K.T. Baldridge Appliance Company. The members of the Ruritan Club decided that their most worthwhile and important civic project would be to obtain the services of a community phy-sician and surgeon. The Ruritans sponsored, along with monetary donations, the remodeling of the

building to provide the community and prospective physician with a beautiful, fully equipped clinic type facility.

On Sunday, July 6, 1990 dedica-tion services were held and Jerry Beguelin, MD accepted the keys and announced the next day that he would be opening up a general practice for medicine and surgery  under the name of Irvington Rural Health Center, LTD.

Jerry Beguelin, MD began his career in medicine in 1964 and is still practicing.

In 2013 Denise Orrill, APN, FNP -BC with eight years of prac-tice took over ownership of the facility. Also among the medical staff is Dr. Lyle Pahnke, Jr., MD with 46 years in practice, Sara McKinzie, WHNP-BC with 3 years in practice, and Tracie Foster, A-GNP-C with one year of prac-tice.

Your health is important to all of the staff of Irvington Friendly Care, LLC / Rural Health Clinic and they hope to keep you healthy for many years to come.

Schaefer BusinessesCelebrating 9 Years

Schaefers Flowers & Crafts began in February of 2007. The business was started by my wife Ritsuko and myself.

My wife and I decid-ed to open a business in Centralia, located at 214 W. Broadway, where the business is still located today.  The flower business is something my wife

always wanted to get into. I was finally able to make that dream a reality once I retired from the UPS.

Ritsuko always loved arranging flow-ers and creating crafty items, so we decided to open a flower and craft shop. The business took off, and has been a success ever since.  My wife believed in

taking care of the customer, making sure the arrangements were made to the customer's order. She was very de-tailed at creating and made some exquisite pieces. Customers loved the fact that she would work with them in finding what they wanted, down to the exact color of flowers. We still strive

today to keep up what Ritsuko started.

In 2008 I added Marten Portable Buildings to the many items we offer now.  In 2013 I started of-fering Eagle carports. The shop has increased in products over the years, and we have a variety of fabric, flow-ers and craft items to offer.

Greenfield Country Store Celebrating 3rd Year Under New Ownership

Rhoda Stauffer and her family along with the help of a few others took over the Greenfield Store in January of 2014. They carry bulk foods, groceries, fresh deli meats and cheeses, deli sandwiches (hot or cold) and baked goods on Fridays and Saturdays. Also, on Saturdays they make donuts and soft pretzels.

They have beautiful local made hand-quilt-ed quilts, loom rugs, gift items, lawn furniture and don’t forget to take a peek into the kitchen room.

They recently added prepared meals and pizza to the homemade items made in their kitchen. Go see them in Wayne City behind Crossroads Family Medicine. It’s worth the drive!

Thanks to Trevor Borowiak, IGA remains a valued part of our Southern Illinois communities. Located in Mt. Vernon and Centralia, Illinois, Mr. Borowiak purchased the Mt. Vernon store in 1999. He reopened the Centralia store in March 2002 after it was closed by the previous owner in December 2001. The Centralia store is located at 1422 East McCord Street and the Mt. Vernon store is located at 500 S. 10th Street.

This year, Mr. Borowiak is fully remodeling the Mt. Vernon grocery store and adding a full-line Ace Hardware store which is slated to open in April 2016.

Farmers State

Bank Was Established

In 1911Farmers State Bank was organized in 1911 and

opened its doors for business as a private bank when the owners and directors of Gluesenkamp Bank of St. Peters, who knew something of Hoffman, concluded it would be a good place to start a bank.

The private bank was changed to a state bank in 1921. In 1933 Ray W. Schnitzmeyer of Hoffman was elected as a cashier and served until 1967 when he was elected to serve as executive Vice President. The current president is Glenn Knolhoff

From 1911 to 2016 — 105 years — the bank’s mission statement remains the same: to offer the finest in banking services as well as being involved in community.

Farmers State Bank came from a humble beginning to now having three locations for your convenience.

Ray W. Schnitzmeyer as cashier. Ray W. Schnitzmeyer as executive vice president

The bank’s second home - built in 1967.

5 Generations Strong

Sutherland –Garnier Funeral Home...Family Tradition Since 1874

It started in 1874 when Gus A. Garnier joined his aunt Theresa Haussler and her son, Berthold, in the Haussler undertaking busi-ness. Mr. Garnier and his sons, Robert and Ira worked for three gen-erations of the Haussler family.

When the Haussler company dissolved in 1929, Gus Garnier and his sons established the Garnier and Sons Funeral Home. Within months they moved to 235 N. Sycamore, where the funeral home remains to this day. The third generation, Ira Garnier, Jr., and Gorden Elliston (husband of Mary Louis Garnier) and fourth generation Richard Garnier joined the family business.

In 2011 Mike and Judy Sutherland of Hillcrest purchased the funeral home from the Garnier family and the family tradition of generations in the funeral home continues as their children, Amanda (Sutherland) Ponyi and John Sutherland are licensed funeral direc-tors and are involved every day in the funeral home.

Mr. Ira Garnier, Sr., right, placed this horse and hearse entry in the Centralia Centennial Parade of 1953, reflecting the history of the funeral business when he was a young man.

Hillcrest’s 95th Anniversary YearIn 1921, unhappy with the way other burial sites were being

maintained, five Centralia businessmen began Hillcrest Memorial Park Co. It was located north of Centralia on property known as Howell Hill. Around 1930, Paul K. Owens was one of the grounds keepers at the cemetery. Later his widow, Aleida, married one of the original founders of the company. In the years following, Aleida’s son, George Owens and his wife Genny took over the cemetery.

In 1959, Aleida’s daughter Dorothy Sutherland began running the cemetery. Mrs. Sutherland continued in the family business until 2008. Throughout those years, her son Mike and his wife Judy began working at Hillcrest Memorial Park and are the current owners of the growing Hillcrest Funeral Home, Cemetery and Cremation Center.

Following tradition, their daughter Amanda (Sutherland) Ponyi and son John Sutherland are now involved as licensed funeral direc-tors. Five generations strong and offering stability year after year.

Sofas And More Offers Hometown Customer Service

Sofas and More originated over five years ago after Jeannie Berger decided to go into business for herself. She said, "I have been in the customer service industry in all of my previous jobs, so this, combined with my love for interior design along with helping customers, is how Sofas and More came to life."

Jeannie and co-owner Jerry Burton sell new name brand furniture for every room in your home as well as mattresses. She has everyday low prices and there are no gimmicks. She says her main brand that sells very well is Ashley Furniture.

Jeannie said, "Being a native of Centralia and raising my family here, what better place to have your business than in your home town. Thank you to all of my customers for your support and for keeping your shopping  local.  I am looking forward to serving this area for many more years to come."

Honesty and Loyalty You Can Count On!

Si Vallett Auto Sales: Running Strong For Over 55 Years

Si Vallett Auto Sales is celebrating 55 years in busi-ness and 26 years at their Nashville location. The busi-ness was started by Si and Ann Vallett in Steeleville, IL in 1961, where it operated at the intersection of Highways 4 and 150 until late 1988. The owners decided to retire and sold the location. Si and Ann's youngest son Vaughn, who had been involved in the business since childhood, graduated in 1989 and wanted to be in the car busi-ness. With no location open at the time, Vaughn and Si started looking for a new place to settle — a nice town to really grow some roots, comparable to Steeleville. They decided on Nashville, and boy, was that a great decision!

"Nashville has been great to us. We love the town and the people," says Vaughn.

The dealership specializes in used cars, trucks and SUVs and takes pride in having something for every-one's price range. Si Vallett Auto Sales would like to thank its customers, both near and far for the years of patronage and looks forward to many years to come. Si Vallett Auto Sales is family owned and operated by Vaughn, his wife Tinna and son Cory.

The Centralia Recreation Complex, located at 115 East Second Street, was a $5 million project that was built with private funds. Getting the Complex built was a team effort.

There were also almost 200 individuals involved in fund raising efforts for the Complex. In addition, more than 700 individuals con-tributed to the campaign.

On July 10, 1992 the Centralia Foundation an-nounced that it had initi-ated a study to determine the feasibility of building a c o m m u n i t y c e n t e r . Foundation trustee Bruce

Geary was named chairman of the Building Committee.

Preliminary architectural designs for the proposed $7 million community recre-ation center were unveiled on July 28, 1992. The master plan, designed for a maximum of 70,000 square feet, was split into three construction phases.

The first phase would include a two-court gym. The second phase was to include an indoor pool and the third phase could contain a second gym and racquetball. Construction drawings and bids were completed in the first half

of 1994, ground was broken on June 26, 1994, and the Central ia Recreat ion Complex opened on October 4, 1995.

The new building was huge, with 60,000 square feet. The dual gym, with a three-lane, 1/12 mile jogging track suspended around it, covered 13,000 square feet.

The Complex has always offered year round activi-ties for the whole family.

In the 20 years since they first opened, The Centralia Recreation Complex has continued to add new equipment and classes to their facility. For more in-formation about their current schedule of classes and other offerings, please call them at 618-532-3214.

Community Trust Bank has a long heritage of being a family owned indepen-dent financial institution for much of its history. In February of 1923 Alfred Pitchford was appointed president of the Richview State Bank. Alfred was the grandfather of Lester Pitchford who served as President and Chairman of the Board. Lester served as president for 50 years after being appointed in 1950. Currently serving as chairwoman of the board is Lester’s daughter, Nancy Roethemeyer who replaced her grandfather, Raymond Pitchford upon his death in 1976 and Lester’s grand-

daughter Sheila Burcham is currently serving as President/CEO.

Over the past 156 years, Community Trust Bank has been known by three differ-ent names. Starting out in 1860 the bank was a private business ran by Samuel Phillip Cooper and called the The Exchange Bank of S.P. Cooper located in Richview, Illinois. In 1912, when Mr. Cooper passed away his son-in-law, Jack Stanton sold the bank to a group of investors who changed the name to The Farmer’s and Merchants Bank. On August 7, 1913 the State of Illinois gave permission to another

group of men to form the Richview State Bank and as a result, by September 15th of the same year, the new bank had bought out Farmer’s and Merchants Bank. After moving to Irvington on December 12, 1966, the directors changed the name to Community Trust Bank for which it is known today.

This financial institu-tion has seen many eco-nomic changes throughout its history. During the depression in 1932, the bank was closed for two weeks due to the Bank Moratorium but re-opened after a trip to Springfield with the books to prove its solvency. However, during this time, in order to keep the bank operating, the 3% semi-annual dividend was eventually reduced to zero and the $1 per meeting directors fee was given back to the bank by all board

members. These measures paid off as the bank weath-ered the depression almost unscathed.

Community Trust has been through numerous expansions after the move to Irvington in 1966. The building in Irvington was expanded once in the early 80’s. In 1981, the board and management decided to expand their operations to include the Centralia area by putting a branch facility on the east side of town and an ATM facility on the west side of town. This facil-ity was again expanded by doubling its space and add-ing a basement in the fall of 1994 enabling the data processing operations to be moved in the fall of 1996. Wanting to expand its mar-ket and continue to grow, the Board of Directors decided to expand with a branch facility in the Nashville, Illinois area.

DePew & Owen Builders, Inc.Is Celebrating 54 Years

DePew & Owen Builders Inc. was formed in 1962 in Centralia by William E. “Bill” Owen and Ralph “Red” DePew, Jr. out of Red’s father’s shop and Bill’s home and they special-ized mainly in residential construction but were involved in some light commercial work. After a few years of operating at its current location at 511 South Oak St. the company became incorporated in 1972 and the company started doing more commercial and indus-trial work. In the late 70s and early 80s the company started building bridges and became an IDOT and CDB approved contractor and soon after had taken on the Butler Pre-Engineered Metal Building line. Red left the company in 1980 and then Bill retired in 1992. Today, a few decades later, the company’s officers are Alan Owen, son of Bill, as President and Ronnie Donoho, Jr., grandson of Bill, as Vice President, who both have worked for the company since high school in the early 80s. While there have been many changes in the company and the industry over the past 54 years, the company is still performing much the same as a full ser-vice general contractor and has on the average 15-18 employees including carpenters, labor-ers, cement finishers and operators who take pride in their craftsmanship.

Over the past 54 years the company has been involved with about every type of con-struction and will pursue a project as small as installing a door knob to building a several hundred thousand square foot industrial or commercial facility. The company now has also changed its line of Pre-Engineered metal buildings from Butler to American Building Systems. The company is now undergoing a major much needed change and is moving its location this spring from its current 6,000 sq. ft. facility to its newly renovated 30,000 sq. ft. facility at 301 North Oak facility to help with its operations and to better serve its customers. The Company remains very diversified working on projects as unique as the construction of the Centralia carillon tower to road and bridges, railroad overpasses, bank facilities, medical facilities, industrial and institutional work and yet we still make house calls.

Schwartz Orchard Celebrating Over 60 Years In Business

Schwartz Orchard began as a strawberry farm owned by Matt and Pauline Schwartz in the early 1950s. In 1980, their son, Tom Schwartz, began to help his mother and eventually became owner. In 1997, Tom leased another location in Dix on Rt. 37 and in 2012 he built a new facility on the property at 1942 Copple Road. Today Tom Schwartz and Nancy James offer in season fruits and vegetables, homemade baked goods, jellies, jams, cider and so much more.

American Family InsuranceIs Celebrating 19 YearsIn Business!

In 1997 Darrel Mays was approached by American Family Insurance, to open the first agency in Mt. Vernon, IL. At the time he was a livestock feed salesman, selling to farmers, ranch-ers and feed distributors. He had told himself that if he were to ever sell anything else it would be something that he could sell to everyone. Obviously, livestock feed isn’t something that you can sell to just anyone. The timing was right and he opened a scratch office for American Family Insurance in Mt. Vernon with no policies in place. With the help of the community and a lot of hard work, not only was he able to succeed, but in August of 2005 he was able to open a second location in Benton, Illinois.

Rolling In New DirectionsSouth Central Transit started in October, 1989. After 18 years of

providing demand response public transportation, in 2007 South Central Transit began rolling in a new direction. During the peak of all time high fuel prices and in an effort to transport a greater number of riders from rural areas SCT began offering public shuttle routes.

The shuttle routes were designed with “You” our clients in mind and have predetermined stops and times to repeated places of interest to pro-vide the public with convenient, low cost transportation without advanced scheduling. To date SCT has 16 public shuttle routes operating throughout their six county service area and in the past month have transported more than 9,000 riders. Current SCT shuttle operations include Intra-city routes that operate inside the city limits of Centralia and Mt. Vernon and Inter-city or countywide routes which provide clients the ability to commute from city to city and county to county (within SCT’s 6 county service area). Most shuttle routes are designed to provide clients with direct con-nections to other SCT shuttles at established transfer stations.

South Central Transit’s public shuttle route system is accessed daily by hundreds of clients for medical appointments, employment, continu-ing education, shopping and recreation. Shuttles also stop frequently at Greyhound, Mt. Vernon and Amtrak in Centralia, Du Quoin and Carbondale.

This map is a basic view of SCT’s current public shuttle route system. Detailed brochures of shuttle routes, times and information are available at www.southcentraltransit.org or by calling South Central Transit at 532-8076 or 800-660-7433.

2016 marks Salem Building Materials 29th year. “New prod-ucts and technology have changed the business a great deal over the years,” states owner/manager Kathy Rose. Specialized com-puter programs allow SBM to help customers visualize projects for houses, additions, or cabinet remodeling. They also regularly update displays, samples and literature. Kathy noted “Due to the increase in outsourcing, it requires constant vigilance on our part to buy from companies that offer both quality products and good customer support and when possible - Made in the USA. Customer satisfaction is a priority and we strive to listen to our customers and give friendly, professional service.” Jackie Storey and Kathy keep up with what’s new in cabinets, countertops and flooring while Floyd Purcell and Jim Gaston stay up to date on windows, doors and building materials. Patsy Rose keeps tabs on hardware items and Lorraine Day and Kim Jourdan make sure all the paperwork goes correctly. Alan Bell and Curtis Finley make the customer deliveries.

“We deeply appreciate all the customers that support our local, independent, non-corporate store and look forward to serv-ing our area for years to come!”

Celebrating 84 Years Of Business At Allen's Furniture

In 1932 Sam Allen and his wife opened up their first furniture store in Vandalia, Illinois. Along with running a business they also had two girls, Lorraine and Rita Mae, who, when they reached their teenage years helped out in the store from time to time. Both were teaching school at the time Sam passed away in 1950, so both Lorraine and Rita Mae went to work at the store full time to help out their mother; and eventually took over ownership of the store. Allen's Furniture has been in business for 84 years now and is still going strong.

113 Years Of TraditionIn 1903 Ross Flower Shop and Greenhouse in Centralia

opened for business by Earl and Whitie Ross. The green-house, operated by the Ross family following the turn of the century, provided fresh flowers for the Centralia shop and other florists as far away as Chicago. Carl and Jackie Thalman of Centralia purchased the store in 1959 from the Ross brothers to continue the tradition at 211 South Locust in downtown Centralia. The next generation came with Kenny and Judy Thalman, naturals since Kenny grew up in the flower industry. In 1984 Kenny and Judy became the new owners when their parents retired. Ross Flower Shop continues to flourish at 705 South Poplar in Centralia with a rich history for 113 years.

144 Years of Learning Right at Your Fingertips

The history of the Centralia Public Library may be divided into three eras, the period before and after the establishment of the library in the Carnegie building and after the 2013 construction/renovation project was completed.

The first era began on December 3, 1872, when the city council adopted an ordinance which provided for the establishment of a public library and reading room and the levy of a tax for its support and main-tenance.

On September 1, 1874, the Centralia Public Library was officially opened in a second floor room in the Willard block on South Locust Street. The first librarian’s report, dated November 21, 1874, showed 446 books on hand, 19 books borrowed and 264 visitors.

By 1880 the library had outgrown the room and to meet its needs was moved to a large upstairs room in the new McKnight building (N.E. corner of Broadway and Locust) where it remained for more than twenty years, until it moved to the newly constructed Carnegie building. A cornerstone laying ceremony was held on July 17, 1902 and the structure was dedicated on January 14, 1903. With the opening of Carnegie building, the second era began.

In 1972, two additional wings were built on and in 2013 a construc-tion/renovation project began; which in addition to a complete remodel of the Carnegie building also included an addition with a computer lab, activity room for library programs, elevator and public restrooms. Visit your library today; so much history, learning and fun awaits you.

The Rusty Nail Is Celebrating15 Years In Business

The Rusty Nail is celebrating 15 years in business! Owned and operated by Cindy Thompson, the first place of business was on South Broadway in Salem and soon they outgrew that space and started construction in February, 2003 at 2039 W. Main. Street in Salem. The structure was complete and opened for business in September 2003. Stop in and browse their huge selec-tion of unique antiques, handmade crafts and primi-tives.

The Shoppers Weekly Papers:28 Years, But Who’s Counting

The Shoppers Weekly was established in 1988. The first pub-lication was printed on September 19 with a circulation of 7,000 covering the Centralia, IL area only. Today The Shoppers Weekly Papers have grown to covering 25,500 homes and businesses with two separate papers, the Centralia / Salem area paper and the Mt. Vernon area paper. We also publish many magazines throughout the year. We are glad to invite you to our daily online at www.theshoppersweekly.com. The goal of every member of our team remains the same: the best combination of coverage, price, experi-ence, service and results. We look forward to the next 28 years!

In the beginning... Bill DuPerrieu and Cathy Stuehmeier.

KVCCU Is Celebrating 34 Years

In 1982, the Centralia Correctional Center Credit Union was chartered with just 19 people. The credit union moved from the Correctional Center and into its own building in Centralia in 1993. In 1995, Arrow Group Industries Federal Credit Union merged with the credit union. Many different Select Employee Groups were added over the years and in 2005, a community charter was granted allowing the credit union to serve anyone who lives or works in Marion, Clinton, Jefferson and Washington counties.

These additions facilitated a name change to what it is today — Kaskaskia Valley Community Credit Union. As the Kaskaskia River runs through the area and has an effect, water shed or flooding or recreation, it is a com-mon attribute to the four counties. The latest expansion was Illinois Central Area Credit Union merging into KVCCU at the end of 2009. Over the course of the years KVCCU has and still continues to put the members first. KVCCU helps put more money in your pocket with free products and services. Coming soon is another office to be located at 1404 W. Main St. in Salem, which will open in spring of 2016.
