e Shield Giant Strides for Nvidia INTRODUCTION There has been a lot of buzz about Nvidia’s portable Android gaming console with its controller like shape, new Tegra 4 processor and its general capabilities as a rounded living room entertainment device. So with the products retail launch, we try to understand to reaction of consumers, analysts and Nvidia themselves on the performance of the console and its impact on Nvidia’s business in general. The console is pretty bulky. It is about 2.5 times heavier than the Nintendo 3DS and 319 grams heavier than the PlayStation Vita. Apart from the weight, the size and shape of the console is also unique, affecting portability. All optimized games for the Shield is available on Nvidia’s own store, the TegraZone which currently has only 30 titles for launch. Users are still unsure if the more popular titles will cross over to this platform. Graphics The Gameplay has been one of the major plus points for the console. Nvidia’s Tegra 4 processer provides a smooth gameplay experience even for graphic heavy games. There was were low latency even while streaming games from the PC or while big screen gaming. The Shield allows you to connect to your television and view video or gaming content on a larger screen. With many gaming titles available for around $2, the shield provides an inexpensive , high quality big screen gaming experience. PC streaming The shield has the ability to wirelessly connect to the user’s PC and stream full PC and steam games. While the streaming feature will be a Beta only version at launch and the current streaming capabilities are limited to only devices with GeForce Experience software and a GTX 650 GPU or better, it is a good start to providing an integrated gaming experience. Apps such as Onlive are a cost effective way to stream PC games on iOS and Google devices and enjoy an integrated gaming experience. Results however have shown that there is high latency in the gameplay experience. Mobile Apps Devices such as Ouya, GameStick and Wikipad provide a more cost effective way to enjoy a wholesome Android gaming experience. These devices however will be unable to combine PC, mobile and living room gaming to provide the user with an integrated experience. Android gaming devices Sony’s PlayStation Vita and Nintendo’s 3DS are established handheld consoles each with a comprehensive gaming library, steady user base and extended developer support. They are also cheaper than the Shield. These consoles however have limited capabilities in combining other gaming platforms (PC, Mobile). By introducing the Shield, Nvidia have an avenue to showcase their product capabilities and be noticed in this new segment. Their Tegra 4 processor has been touted as the fastest ARM based processer with 72 GPU cores and 4 A15 CPU cores and has performed encouragingly in benchmark tests, comfortably outperforming devices with Qualcomm processors (biggest rival in the segment.) Nvidia have invested a lot of time and effort in the Android gaming console segment. Apart from Shield, there are 2 other Android based consoles which have currently hit the market and are running Tegra 3 processers. Nvidia have tried to develop standards for this segment. Their guidelines for developing a superior controller experience are being followed by companies like Ouya, Gamestick, WikiPad, Nyko, Moga and Steelseries. Next Growth Avenue Testing capabilities Android Gaming While the verdict is still out on the commercial success of the shield, the initial response received has gone a long way in legitimizing Nvidia as a serious stakeholder in the mobile gaming and alternative console market.
