portant factor in the growing successof the Annual Quarter Horse Show

Heroism BeyondThe Call of Duty

ARCADIA —DeSoto County SheriffFrank Cline displayed "heroism aboveand beyond the call of duty" in a shoot-out with a cornered killer, according tonewspaper reports.

The shoot-out developed after FrankSloan reportedly shot and killed hisformer wife, Mary Ida Dorminey, firedat two other persons, then holed up in atrailer. He ignored commands to comeout when the Sheriff and other officerssurrounded the trailer. Tear gas alsofailed to flush him.

Then, according to a newspaper re-port, Sheriff Cline forced open thetrailer's bedroom door, crawled insidecarrying an automatic carbine, crouchedlow in the darkness and again com-manded Sloan to surrender.

Sloan's reported reply was: "I'm

going to kill you and then I'll kill

myself."

There was an exchange of gunfire.Sloan dropped dead and the Sherifffell backward out of the trailer door, unhurt.

TWENTY YEARS OFSERVICE TO

TITUSUILLE —So-called "police bru-tality" makes big headlines, but there' sanother side of the coin that the publicseldom hears about.

It's known as "brutality toward thepolice" and the only time it comes tothe attention of the public is whensome law enforcement officer gets fedup with the one-sided injustice of thesituation.

A good case in point occurred whenBrevard County Sheriff Leigh Wilsongave "get tougher" orders to hisdeputies.

Sheriff Wilson said he was sick andtired of his deputies getting beaten up;and if people with no respect for lawand order insist on using violence "theycan expect violence in return. "

The Sheriff said his new orders werenot a license for police brutality.

"I will personally prosecute anydeputy who uses excessive force, " hesaid "but at the same time I will com-mend them for using force when neces-sary.

"Wilson said he expected his men to

conduct themselves as gentlemen andperform their duties as courteously aspossible.

"I do not, however, expect them tobe victims of violence. I expect themto use whatever means necessary tohandle the situation if they are threat-ened,

" he added.According to the Sheriff, 20 men were

injured in the line of duty and ninewere hurt in cases where suspectsresisted arrest with violence during thefirst half of this year.

This is much too high; and it's got tostop,

"Sheriff Wilson said.

There's Another Side to This Coin "Brutality"

AY PARTY!of the contributions which have been made. The listis practically endless of men and women who havegiven of their time and talents to make this BoysRanch a reality.

Let me pay a special tribute to some people whodeserve special recognition —the people of Live Oakand Suwannee County. From the day this projectbecame a reality, this community has never waveredin its contributions and service to make the BoysRanch a part of the total community.

These young men enjoy the full and completerespect and love of the people of this communityin their schools, in their churches, and in theirhomes. Too much cannot be said for the people ofthis great county who have opened up their heartsto these young men. The love and the dedicationyou have shared is a token which is beyond an ade-quate expression of gratitude.

From every corner of Florida, from Pensacolato Fernandina Beach to the Florida Keys—Florid-ians have responded to the sixty-seven sheriffs ofFlorida with funds, gifts, and talents.

Trip to WashingtonBack in 1964 I had the privilege of playing host

to seven of the young men of this Ranch who cameto Washington. They met the leaders of Congressand toured the city. They presented a ten gallon hatand sheriff's badge to The White House for Presi-dent Johnson.

Members of the United States Congress wereexcited at the accomplishments and the vision ofthe Boys Ranch. Speaker of the House John McCor-mack said to these young men: "What you and thesheriffs of Florida have done is one of the mostheartwarming and finest programs of which I haveknowledge. What you have done goes right to theheart of all human existence. Yours is a story thatshould be told in every nook and cranny of thiscountry so that others might follow your example. "

The event we celebrate today is in the traditionof the Boys Ranch.

The firemen of Florida have contributed thismagnificent new fire station. This is a growing com-munity with the need for all of the services of acommunity. The firemen from all over Florida havecontributed their time and their talents to constructa needed facility.

A Great ChapterTo you, the firemen, I say that you have con-

tributed a great chapter in the growing story of theBoys Ranch. I salute you and thank you.

As we stand here in this tranquil spot and lookaround us at these handsome buildings, it is goodto reflect upon the work of those who have gonebefore. In a larger sense, though, this should be amilestone of rededication.

Those men who have gone before only point theway to what can be done. I would liken the past tenyears to the building of one of these cottages. First

(Continued on Page 10)NQVEMIER, 1967

The wind blew away Leon County Sheriff Bill Joyce's "wel-come" speech, but the Sheriff didn't "blow his cool" and ad-libbed the remainder of his remarks. Sheriff Joyce is Presidentof the Florida Sheriffs Association and a Boys Ranch founder.

Grover Long, Chairman of the Youth Activities Committee ofthe Florida State Firemen's Association, responded to SheriffDaffin's appreciation speech.

What a Birthdayt(Continued from Page 9)

you must have a solid foundation, and then youbuild brick by brick.

Some have made large contributions. Some havemade small. However, whether your contributionhas been large or small, it is not measured in thoseterms. It is measured by the heart.

We all know the words from the refrain, "It isbetter to light just one little candle than to stumblein the dark. It is better to light just one little can-

dle; all you need is a tiny spark. "Those who have contributed time, money, and

talents have lit a spark in the hearts and minds ofthe young men who have found a home here for, after all, what we are really talking about is notbuildings nor bricks nor mortar, nor money, norland, but the lives of young men.

How often have we heard it said that "It is bet-ter to build boys than to mend men. "

Wally Stands TallWally Edwards is a young man who stands tall

in the annals of the Boys Ranch. He came to Wash-ington with the group I spoke of earlier. Can anyman or woman who has had any part in the life ofthis Ranch fail to feel a sense of pride in his havinggraduated from high school with honors from theFFA? Can we keep from feeling that we had a partas he graduated from North Florida Junior College? Can we keep from feeling happiness in his mar-riage in the new Ranch Chapel? Can anyone notfeel a sense of real pride in this young Marineserving his nation with valor in Vietnam?

Buddy McHenry, another Boys Rancher, re-ceived the Bronze Star in service in Vietnam. Atleast ten other former Boys Ranchers are servingin the military.

Today we look to the future. There is a building in Washington on which ap-

pears the inscription, "What is past is prologue. "I submit to you that all which has been accom-

plished in the past ten years is merely a prologue towhat we will do in the next ten years. I take great

pride and want to again express my deep appreci-ation to the Sheriffs of Florida for having allowedme the honor of serving on the Board of Trusteesof the Boys Ranch.

"Someone Who Cares"I feel that same pride and hope that anything I

might do, and I know it is small, will in some wayhelp a young boy.

Here at Boys Ranch these young men find ahome. They find someone who cares. They findsomeone who loves them, and they know that outover this state and nation there are tens of thou-sands who are pulling for them.

Our reward will be in their lives. Wherever theygo, whatever they do, they take a part of us withthem.

It seems a simple thing to send ten dollars tothe Florida Sheriffs Association for an honorarymembership each year. When this is multiplied bytens of thousands, however, it becomes a flood ofsupport.

The memory of loved ones is honored in theMemorial Fund.

There was a young lad who once came here tofind a home with only a pair of thongs on hisfeet, two T-shirts and two pairs of khaki pants tohis name. Because some sheriff cared, he came hereand found a home.

As the years roll by there will be story afterstory told of boys who became men because someonecared. I know that you care or you would not behere today. Here with us in spirit are the tens ofthousands of persons who have heard of the BoysRanch and support it with their gifts and prayers.

We look to the future. This is the foundation on which we build. This is

a heritage and legacy which we leave to those whocome after us. "No man stands so tall, as he whostoops to help a child. "

For those boys who have traveled this road, might I express appreciation. For these finding ahome here today, I express thanks. For the tens ofthousands yet to come, so many yet unborn, mightI express to you a most profound and humble noteof gratitude.

The "Ranch Family" (boys and staff members) got together to sing "God BlessAmerica" under the direction of Rancher Jerry Stacy at the end of the dedicationprogram.

FOR

A MONTH

chased wholesale; and used clothingwhich is mostly hand-me-downs fromlarge ranchers to small ranchers.

When a boy turns in used clothingin good condition he is given a trade-inallowance toward the purchase of newclothes. The used clothes are cleaned, mended and "sold" to other boys atreduced prices.

Boys don't spend cash at the Ranchstore. Instead, each has a clothing cred-it of $3.75 per month.

At any other store this wouldn't beenough to cover a boy's nakedness; butat the Ranch emporium $2 will get hima new shirt, $3 a new pair of pants;and $4 a pair of shoes. Other items arepriced at the same level and usedclothes for work or play are "dirtcheap. "

Boys can take care of all their basicclothing needs at the Ranch store, butsome of them also save their weeklyspending allowance so they can pur-chase items at stores in nearby com-munities. Older boys who work at jobsoff the Ranch during Summer vacationare allowed to spend some of t'heirearnings for additional clothing overand above their quota from the Ranchstore.

Mrs. Helen Brettingen, who is in charge of the Ranchclothing store, gives some motherly advice on how toselect a sport jacket to one Rancher and fits anotherboy with a new pair of cowboy boots.
