THE SHEET MUSIC

LIGHT THE FUSE !

the sheet music !!!!!!!!A huge and massive thank you for buying the album - we really, really mean that (it means we can buy more pedals which is always a good thing). !For me, The Initiative has always been about bringing musicians together (regardless of their background, their genre, their style of playing) to see what will happen and to create new music, most of the time on-the-fly live on stage. In that spirit we’ve decided to give away the dots to anyone who buys the album - if you can find a use for them then please feel free to use them, feel free to rip them apart and use bits (we do all the time, they are definitely not set) and report back! (Please credit us if you do use something but we’d love to hear anybody playing them, drop us a link or email or tweet or whatever). !These charts are the most complete they’ve every been but because they change on a nightly basis it seemed counter-productive to transcribe them note for note from the album. Move things around and let things groove. I’ve put in some notes before each chart to hopefully shed some light on starting points or things we’ve found have worked at our experimental residency but these are defiantly not answers, just ideas. And for those tunes that we composed in ye olde handwritten way we’ve included them where possible - they’ve got some slightly different ideas that sometimes happen (they’re probably just for reference though). !Any tunes with words will work as instrumentals and all have been played with line-ups as small as a trio up to huge collectives. !If you have any questions, if you find anything new and exciting, if it’s all massively confusing them feel free to drop us a message. !www.twitter.com/initiativejazz [email protected] !Go play! !Matt Robinson & The Initiative

Short Cuts !

composed by Dave Shooter words by Ash Murphy !!!!!!!!

MATT’S EXPERIMENTAL RESIDENCY NOTES: !A fairly straight forward little piece that is centred around the rap verses. When playing live let the [A] groove cook for days either as an intro or for just mega-groove moments - experiment with it and let it move around. Horns play a slightly different line depending on which verse it’s on - this is completely optional and works best with the rhythm section doing the same in unison. If you’re a single horn player - loosen it up and tie in more with the words. TAKE IT TO THE BRIDGE in full James Brown style at [B] with tons on unison phrasing. !Rhythm section drop-outs work well at any point and you can easily lose or add beats for instant time-signiture-mess-with-the-audience’s-heads breaks.

Short Cuts !

Ash Murphy !!!!!!!!So whats good enough What can make another listen love your music your style your flow or your tones Sends a shiver have effect going straight through your bond Rigour bones with nothing except for microphones The right clothes or personality has it existed The ones who get somewhere are they ones who persisted I missed it or will i miss yet beg for more chances before im faceless like a silhouette burn out like a cigarette Achieve it yet i feel regret which pathway will you get somewhere before my time is met !Do we make the choices for what looks right Whats nice whats ironic or whats suitably priced A persona built on instinct The misfit rethink Will rise for my prize with brights eyes to sink I cant decide anymore and im borderline bored Boreline more desire for the idolly floored false idols i heard on tv set Whats set? Who says so what comes next !Their net profit is your loss iof this Debate over what is this i doubt youll ever follow this Or want to because its babbling right Im scrabbling for advise on my jeremy kyle marathon night Keep lose hold tight Hold a truce Pick a fight not with him with your very own moral demise !I keep moving

Salmon Hands !

composed by Matt Robinson !!!!!!!!MATT’S EXPERIMENTAL RESIDENCY NOTES: !Title by John Powney (if you’re feeling brave ask him about it). !This was written at the same time as Pedal Fetish and after listening to the Yom and the Wonder Rabbis album (check them out!). Set it up as a big dirty groove and have fun! If you’re feeling brave count [B] in and open it up (have a think about the groove their first though - there are a lot of options but at the speed is difficult to play around with it live) and apologies for the solo chords. The guitar line is just one of many that was written for guitar + string quartet so play around with counter-melodies and other lines if you have the patience and/or layering up different time signatures. !DAVE SAYS: !The bass sound is a Boss OC-2 into a Copilot Orbit - with a big nod to John Davis. And he respectfully suggests playing the [B] section as 4 bars of 6 on D, C, Bb and Ab.

Kytopia !

composed by Dave Shooter words by Ash Murphy !!!!!!!!

MATT’S EXPERIMENTAL RESIDENCY NOTES: !Written by Dave in Amsterdam Airport I believe given its once working title. A really great tune that’s deceptively simple but gives loads of scope for things to happen. The horn lines have been written as backings but are strong enough to be played on their own if there’s a mighty groove happening. If playing with the words add in a [C] at “Seek the weak, light the fuse” - we normally do as a dropout with a horn line following Ash. I love moments like that and a whole manner of Zorn-esk things could (and should) emerge there and at any point. If [A] is a funk type thing then [B] is samba. Generally we try keep this one quite light - it’s not all doom-jazz. !DAVE SAYS: !Is indeed written in Amsterdam Airport on the way back from watching the Snarky Puppy sessions for the We Like It Here album. The studio they recorded it in is a fabulous place in Utrecht called Kytopia. !If playing with words add in a C in 4 on concert Em at “that note was wrong”.

Kytopia !

words by Ash Murphy !!!!!!!!The equator of our society The balancing act Wearing out fences the fence will one day snap and what will these people do next? Wear invisible cloaks but carry microphones set up to 1000 watt speaker tones Poke fun, these masked villains picking at society worse than those that openly control us. the times we are down are the times that mold us We fear those that bear no power Punctual to the hour but lose naive tongue an insecure shower That note was wrong, your close don’t fit your opinion has gone, because he said its it Sit down, and do not take chances. Who lives life these days who makes advances !they parade around streets running raleighs of judgement. Leave graves and slaves because of their own begrudgement. !!Seek the weak light the fuse bitterness, gritty

What Next? !

composed by Dave Shooter !!!!!!!!MATT’S EXPERIMENTAL RESIDENCY NOTES: !Play it as written and this’ll sound fantastic. Not much to say on this. Experiment with your bass grooves and drop the rhythm section out at [C]. Stack the horns in octaves at that point (put the clarinet 8va even if you’re on two horns (cl. & trp. for example) Quote [A] often / use as a backing to solos / drum solo moment? Just enjoy! !DAVE SAYS: !Get your Primus records out and go all ‘Claypool’ for a monster bass groove at [B]. And you could play some nice ascending Abm7 inversions if you wanted to fo the bass chords at [C].

Washed !

words by Ash Murphy !!!!!!!!MATT’S EXPERIMENTAL RESIDENCY NOTES: !Our only standard in the current set and the only tune that comes with the possibility of winning ‘Dave’s Special Prize’ if you can guess the standard on the gig. Will work with almost anything so long as played in that film-noir slow swing style.

Furball Remedy !

composed by Dave Shooter !!!!!!!!!

MATT’S EXPERIMENTAL RESIDENCY NOTES: !You can sit and groove on this for hours. Let is build slowly and don’t play too fast. Different feels work very well both as a groove to play all the way through or to swap between and develop. Move with the soloists and find new territory. Don’t under any circumstances count the head in after 8 bars (no matter how tempting it sounds like it wants to go there) or endure the stare of death from Dave. Works nicely in 3. !DAVE SAYS: !If you want to go with the groove on the album just follow the chords playing Octave-Root (not Root-Octave) - then take it from there. And be sure to check Rustee Allen’s excellent line on ‘If You Want Me To Stay’ (from Fresh) for stylistic reference!

Pedal Fetish !

composed by Matt Robinson !!!!!!!!MATTS EXPERIMENTAL RESIDENCY NOTES: !Open the [A] up before bringing in the bass clarinet groove - that’s where time will start. Keep any rhythm section players free harmonically and let the horns (or strings) play the chords. There’s a whole host of stops John and Dave have found in [B] that you can explore to add under-solo-surprise-confusion. You can also transpose the horn chords from [A] a tone higher and use under solos. !When I’ve used this in workshops we’ve found that counting in chunks of 3 bars (rather than 4) is surprisingly more difficult that expected but keep at it. It’s a great groove to sit on where you’re there - though feel free to move away from the bass line in solos. You could melt back into [A]... !DAVE SAYS: !In the solos on [B] you can play in 6 or in 3 to help build tension.

Give Me Yours !

composed by Dave Shooter !!!!!!!!MATT’S EXPERIMENTAL RESIDENCY NOTES: !Whole band unison amazingness. Though you might want to put some comping in from a guitar or keys. !Normally an A-B-A form with drums filling the gaps in [B]. Solos on [A] with [B] on cue. !Not a lot to do with the tune other than play it - drums stops work great at end of phrases - but then open the solos up and move it around loads. !DAVE SAYS: !This came from listening to the first track on the Get the Blessing album - ‘Bugs in Amber’ - we needed a big-moster-unison-riff-tune. This is it! !The inspiration for the mini-drum solos in [B] came from a section of Miles’ Jack Johnson album - go listen to the whole thing to find them - they’re great! !

Two of a Perfect Pair !

composed by Dave Shooter !!!!!!!!!

MATT’S EXPERIMENTAL RESIDENCY NOTES: !Seems like we’ve been playing this one for decades but we never got round to recording it - a true favourite of ours. !Sit and let it groove forever. Build very gradually - especially on the bass line - don’t even remotely play what’s written until somewhere near the end. The head can go round and round adding things each time - play with just top line first time for example. !Both [A] and [B] work when played together (doesn’t just work actually - sound great!) but again build to this - it’s a slow burner and works great with a solid rock beat. !DAVE SAYS: !This is one you can really go places with. !The bass part at [A] is the main tune and the part at [B] is the basic groove - feel free to elaborate at will. Try playing [A] and [B] at the same time - much easier than it sounds like it might be - and works really well to help the tune build.
