I’ve been abandoned—he’s gone off to see my big cousins in South Africa. They’ll probably have him for breakfast!

I went to the vet again- it’s that nice Dermot– and he drained my over-active glands thus reducing my swollen neck and making me

beautiful once more. Thanks to all who’ve asked after me.

GRAND LUXURY

AUCTION 24TH

OCTOBER

Now’s the time to look ahead and take this wonderful

opportunity to boost the roof fund by donating articles to be

auctioned. Look in the attic and in the basement. Check the

contents of your cupboards. Small items of furniture,

pictures (especially Rembrandts) ornaments, china,

computers, (hard and software), antiques, brass, copper,

jewellery, first editions, tools - in fact anything of value that

might sell at auction. Store it, bring it to

the church, or have it

collected.

Giffnock South was well represented at the fund raising concert at Busby Parish Church on Saturday, 21st February. Those who attended spent an enjoyable afternoon listening to well-loved favourites beautifully sung by Rosanne Brackenbridge accompanied by Peggy Mack. There were tea and cakes, a tombola and gift stall. The sum of £650 was raised for Kwenderana and the organisers thank all who helped to make this venture such a success. Photos on page 7

TEXT OF THE

MONTH

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”

John 20:1-2

The Minister’s

Letter

To celebrate our 75th Anniversary we are having a special service in the church on Sunday 10th May at 11 am followed by a lunch at the Hilton Hotel Glasgow. We would be delighted if any of our friends would like to join us at either or both of these events. The cost of the lunch is £20 and there will be a bus leaving the church at 12.30 pm (cost £3) if required.

Please contact the church office [email protected] or 620 2204 (Tues & Fri mornings) if you wish your name to be added to the luncheon list.

PARK CHURCH NEWS

Risen Christ, you revealed yourself to Mary in the garden at dawn;

Reveal yourself to us in the dawnings of our lives.

You revealed yourself to the fisher folk as they toiled together at their work;

Reveal yourself to us in the long hours of our toil.

You revealed yourself in the broken bread of Emmaus;

Reveal yourself to us in our homes, around our tables.

You revealed yourself to Thomas when he felt the wounds on your body;

Reveal yourself to us when we see and feel the wounds of the world.

You revealed yourself to many as they met beneath the skies;

Reveal yourself to us in the wonder of your creation. (Lindisfarne Community)

May we find the revelation of God’s love for us in the joy of Easter Day, and

see in the new life of the natural world a parable of the resurrection.

Yours in Christ,

Catherine.

Dear Friends,

Springtime brings us new life appearing all

around us. Bird song lifts our hearts and we look

forward to more appearances of dearly loved

blossom, flowers and leaves as birds hurry to

build their nests in hedges and trees. April is full

of surprises, and this year Easter Day falls at the

beginning of the month. We wait in our Lenten

purple for that glorious moment of revelation as

Christ rises from the tomb and fills the world with

hope and joy.

Prayer Group and Prayer

A small prayer group has been formed in Giffnock South by Eileen MacKissack and following on from the first meeting, a prayer tree (pictured) has been planted in the church with an open invitation to all to write prayers on the leaves and then hang them on its branches. There is also a box in which to place prayers of a more private nature. This idea came from Iona Abbey where there is a prayer tree for the use of visitors.

The children from the Sunday School were very enthusiastic and took leaves, wrote pray-ers and drew pictures. Five prayers were said recently following requests from people in the congregation.

If you would like prayers to be included when the group meet but are unable to come to

church then please feel free to call Eileen MacKissack on 629 2917 or email

The Guild has only one meeting this month, but

it is rather special, since it is about our locality. On April 8th

at 2pm, Mr Michael Tobias will speak about the “History of

our Space”, an account of our own local story. Everyone is

welcome to join us and learn about the area in which we live.

Now for the future: The AGM has been postponed to the 6th

May at 7.15pm as many of our members will be returning

from Chester on our original date of 29th April. Please now

put 6th May in your diary.

We also look forward to our outing on Thursday, 28th May,

when we will visit the Kelpies, have lunch at a local

restaurant and round off a great day with a trip on the Falkirk

Wheel. More details will be given in the May ‘Sentinel’.

The April service at Eastwood Court Care Home is on

now look at a humble follower of Jesus, St Francis of Assisi, a

saintly man who lived in poverty, served the poor and sick

and is also remembered for his gentleness with animals.

minute act of worship. Our May service will be on Tuesday

12th, a week earlier than our normal third Tuesday of the

We are currently planning to run the annual Giffnock South Gents’ Golf Tournament again this June, at Whitecraigs Golf Club. At this stage, the date is not confirmed, but it is likely to be either Sunday 14th or Sunday 21st June - weather permitting - commencing at approximately 2pm with a meal afterwards in the clubhouse.

As previously, this will be a single round Stableford scoring competition.

There will be prizes for 1st & 2nd places and the winner will also receive the much-sought-after Giffnock South Gents’ Golf Cup to take pride of place in his trophy cabinet for 12 months. The total cost is not likely to exceed £20 per head.

If you would like to come along to this great afternoon out, please enter your name and the other requested details on the entry form sheet which will be displayed on the notice board outside the Winton Hall just as soon as we have confirmed the date.

CAN YOU HELP?

We are constantly finding a host of small jobs that have

to be done at Giffnock South to keep our buildings,

gardens and pathways in pristine condition.

Although we employ a landscape gardening company to

look after the regular maintenance of grass, laurels and

shrubs, there are many other improvements to our gardens which we

can do ourselves. There is a lot to do inside the church as well.

We would like to bring together small groups of people able to assist

from time to time with light tasks and perhaps to make

new friends. If you are able to help, please give your

name to Willie Dunbar, Alistair Orr or to any member of

the Fabric Committee.

Glasgow/Malawi Community Exchange Project Would you like a challenge that will change lives, including your own?

‘Our aim is to establish & develop inclusive and self-sufficient community relationships through the sharing of life skills and Christian values.’

What? We intend to travel to Ekwendeni, Malawi during the last two weeks of July 2015 to share community activities with the people there. We plan to stage a holiday camp and also work within the local schools, hospital and township. We’d like to tap into the expertise of individuals in our travelling group for the benefit of the people of Ekwendeni, while in our turn we learn from our visit. This will be the first part of a three year community development plan.

Who? Having made a successful trip in 2014, Rev. Jeanne Roddick, Rev. Catherine Beattie and George Watson (Queen’s Park FC) will lead the group, with volunteers from local Churches and other professional colleagues, as well as senior pupils from Williamwood High School - in effect a community group, maximum 30 people, from Glasgow.

What will it cost? The cost per person is anticipated to be approximately £1600. This will cover all travel, food & accommodation. (Fund raising ideas are available).

FORTHCOMING FAMILY EVENTS Hi Folks, I’ve got a letter! Well it’s a sort of letter–

but it’s all I’ve got, so it’ll need to do. It’s a PPS

from Pat who says she is sorry I’m not getting any

fan mail since I deserve it for keeping my assistant

in check (and he needs it!) especially since I’ve got

health problems. Thanks for that, Pat.

Maybe I’ll get a proper letter next month. Surely there’s someone

out there with a grudge or a moan they want to get off their chest!

This is your big chance. Send it to me, Boris, via the office or email it

to [email protected]

THIS YEAR YOU CAN BE PART OF SOMETHING TRULY SPECIAL.

In May 2015, The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice will break

ground at Bellahouston Park. We are building a 21st century Hospice

for Glasgow and you can help us transform the care experience of

patients and their families for generations to come.

We are turning to the people of Glasgow for their help. The race is on

to build the Hospice which costs around £21 million to build and equip.

Although we’ve worked really hard we still need to raise over £7

million and as we are breaking ground to lay our foundations, time is

critical.

Join us individually or with your friends, family or colleagues.

Together, as we walk the streets of Glasgow, we’ll lay the

foundations for a new Hospice for its people.
