From the Manager
Well, spring has sprung! While spring officially started March 20th, we generally as-sociate April and Easter with spring. Of course, we all hope that the temperature will be pleasant until November, but it’s a good bet that the heat will be upon us by the end of May. Enjoy the pleasant temperatures while we have them.
You’ll notice that The Sentinel is a bit thicker this month. We’re trying an April Fool’s section this year, which we hope you’ll enjoy. Look for all the pages with the April Fool’s graphic at the top. (Be sure to read the “editorial” written by Peter’s wife!)
Finally, our congratulations to Slim Baxter and Sheryl Krueger (pictured below) for being featured in the Winter 2017 issue of Knowledge Stream, a magazine put out by the Bureau of Reclamation for the U.S. Department of the Interior. Slim and Sheryl are avid volunteers at our local water desalination research facility, and they both demonstrate that it’s never too late to learn new things or to contribute time or talent to worthy causes. See the full article posted in the lobby on bulletin board beside the atrium doors. Congrats, Slim and Sheryl!

The Alamo Senior Center needs volunteers
for Home Delivered Meals.
Deliveries take about one hour. Your help just once a week helps
our homebound seniors.
The Nutrition Advisory Council has set a suggested donation of $2.50 per meal for anyone 60 years of
age or older. A family member or guest (under the age of 60) must pay $7.05 for
their meal. For your convenience, you can get a meal ticket for a whole month or for the
number of meals you desire. Meal tickets will be available every day (Monday thru Friday) at the Nutrition Counter from 11 a.m. to 12
p.m.
If you enjoy a salad instead of the meal,
PLEASE stay in line as if you are getting a meal. The salad and all the goodies will be added to the tray as it goes down the line.
You will pick it up at the end of the serving line the same way you would pick up your
regular meal. Your cooperation with this pro-cedure will assure everyone gets the best ser-
vice!
PLEASE REMEMBER
TO RENEW/UPDATE

From the Far Side Call me Cat. I am Peter’s better half and thrilled to get my chance to chat
with all of you. Little Ripper and I need for you to hear “our side” of the sto-ry, and April is as good a time as any. (No April Fools intended.)
Little Ripper wants you to know he is the real brains of our household. He does better tricks than Peter. He knows where his water dish is, and you should see the tail wagging and cartwheels he does when Peter arrives home from work. If your living conditions allow for pets, we highly recom-mend that you all get a Little Ripper of your own. Never can you find a more faithful companion chock full of surprises and unconditional love.
I got a good chuckle while reviewing some of Peter’s previous editorials (messages). They were certainly a rip roaring fictional tale, long on advice (he seldom takes himself). But then advice is easier to give than practice (or so I’ve heard).
I do know for sure that the day Peter heard the news that he was hired at the Senior Center was a happy day, indeed, for him and me! He comes home full of tales of the wonderful people he has met at the Center (both staff and seniors). And, I got him out of the house and out from under foot. The Lord does answers prayers. And that’s no April Fools.

For Your Contributions During This, Our Favorite Season:
TAX SEASON! From Your Pocket to Ours.
Please help us
by not taking (or discarding!) PLASTIC FLATWARE or PAPER PLATES from the
Dining Room. Buying this stuff is expensive, so we’re having to recycle
these for another meal. (Don’t even ask what we’re using for pots and
pans!)
Your cooperation is sincerely appreciated!
Going Places!
The Senior Center is delighted to offer a luxury trip to Las Vegas, Nevada; the Grand
Canyon; and, several wonderful spots in between. We are just waiting for our bus to
return from our Washington, D.C. trip and will announce dates soon.
Thanks to our valiant seniors (pictured on right) who are learning
how to move our tour bus. This picture was taken in Wheeling, West
Virginia, on the way back from Washington, D.C. Seniors are super-
vised by ASC bus driver, Willie, pictured on the far right. Go team!
From the Fitness Center
While studying the effects of the hottest year on record (allegedly caused in part by
man-made pollution), scientists have accidentally discovered that a sedentary lifestyle
can be beneficial. “Being a couch potato,” reports one unnamed source, “is healthier
for you than running a marathon without proper hydration.”
At least one anonymous senior has been overheard to exclaim that this is great
news for her. “I’m desperately allergic to exercise,” she said, adding, “but I stay hydrat-
ed by drinking at least a six pack of soda every day.”
The scientists conducting the study could not reach a consensus on the reason for
their findings. But one researcher said that “Running a few miles without something to
drink is hard as heck on one’s body,” something akin to “...pushing a bus from Wash-
ington, D.C., back to New Mexico.”
Experts suggest several hours a day of lounging to not
damage muscles. Watching TV or napping can make the job
easier, according to our doctors. Just remember to keep
drinking.
Thoughts from a Senior Citizen
My goal for 2017 was to lose just 10 pounds. Only 15 to go. Ate salad for dinner. Mostly croutons & tomatoes. Really just one big round crouton covered with
tomato sauce and cheese. FINE, it was a pizza. I ate a pizza. How to prepare Tofu: (a) Throw it in the trash. (b) Grill some meat. I just did a week’s worth of cardio after walking into a spider web. I don’t mean to brag, but I finished my 14-day diet food in 3 hours and 20 minutes. A recent study has found women who carry a little extra weight live longer than men who
mention it. Kids today don’t know how easy they have it. When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag
carpet to change the TV channel. Senility has been a smooth transition for me. Remember back when we were kids and every time it was below zero outside they closed school?
Me neither. I may not be that funny or athletic or good looking or smart or talented. I forget where I was
going with this. I love being a senior. I learn something new every day and forget 5 others. Just remember, once you’re over the hill you begin to pick up speed.
Pilfered from somewhere.
