    RENAISSANCE COMPARISON

The sense of rebirth is at the center of all Renaissance realizations and beliefs. During the

Renaissance many believed that the way to greatness and illumination was through the

study of different cultures and beliefs such as, the Golden Ages, ancient Greek civilizations,

and the Romans (our book). The Italian and Northern European renaissance incorporated the

rebirth of learning centered on classical foundations, the growth of perspective shown in

the visual arts, and progressions in science. The Renaissance in Italy grew in the fifteenth

century and was carried throughout parts of Europe in the sixteenth century (our Book).

The different forms of art show the quest for scientific accuracy and realism during the era,

artists such as Leonardo Di Vinci, Raphael, and Michelangelo are a few examples of the

artists. Humanism impacted the Renaissance and is revealed in the growing use of different

subjects. Human values had a profound effect on the various art forms. The earlier subjects

used in paintings prior to the Renaissance consisted mostly of religious figures and

settings. Earlier art forms did not convey the naturalistic expressions found in human life.

The period was characterized by the growing interest in ancient Greek and Roman design,

including highlighting human beings and the environment in much of the art found in the

    culture.

The Italian Renaissance and the northern European Renaissance shared various social and

cultural qualities. Religion played a large role in both Italy and the northern Europe during the

Renaissance. Guilds were also commonly found in both cultures during this era. Some social and

cultural differences existed among the Italian and Northern European Renaissance. The people

held onto the Middle Ages art and architecture in the north. The middle Ages were more

prominent in the north where the Gothic culture and arts were stronger in Italy. The art techniques

in the north were different from the art techniques practiced in Italy during the renaissance. In

Italy much of the artistscentered most of their time on architecture, sculptures, and paintings.

European artists focused their efforts on furnishings, tapestries, and illuminated manuscripts. The

social changes found in Europe and Italy was based on different reasons. Italians believed in

humanism. Northern European social changes were based on the religious reform. The approach

given to composition by the artistes from the north was totally different from the approach given

to composition by the Italians. For the Italians, scientific composition mattered most in their arts.

The Italians were very keen on anatomy, perspective, and proportion during the renaissance

(John, 2001). During the renaissance, the people from the north considered how their arts looked

like especially in terms of color. The climates in the two places are a bit different to favor

different arts. The geophysical conditions from the north favor stained glass windows for barrier

purposes. Frescoes and egg tempera are favored in Italy.
