MEET SENIORS HELPING SENIORS!As we are busy preparing for

our Sixth Annual Active Aging Celebration that will take place on Sunday, September 17th (mark your calendars!), we are grateful for the generous support we received from the Platinum Sponsor of last year’s Active Aging Celebration, Seniors Helping Seniors.

Seniors Helping Seniors® Chester County, Western Montgomery County, & Upper Bucks County In-Home Care Services provides care to seniors by friendly, compassionate seniors who know the challenges that come with aging and are willing to help. Senior helpers can help with cooking, light housekeeping, companionship, personal care, shopping, transportation and more! This in-home care service enables seniors to maintain an independent lifestyle in their own home for as long as possible.

The home care agency is led by the dynamic husband and wife team, Brad and Dara Trout. This is a second career for both Brad and Dara. They both come from a corporate background and were getting tired of the corporate lifestyle and looking for a change. They feel it was destiny the day they found out about Seniors Helping Seniors! Brad was

traveling for work and browsing an inflight magazine when he came across an article about a Seniors Helping Seniors franchise. They both felt that it was the perfect opportunity for them and a natural fit. Dara had been a caregiver for her mother, who was living with Alzheimer’s for many years. As Dara and her friends got older, many of her friends turned to her for guidance, advice, and support, as they dealt with caregiving for their own aging parents. Who better to begin this new venture than Dara?

Alzheimer’s/Dementia care remain close to Dara and Brad’s hearts. Seniors Helping Seniors provides respite care and specialty Alzheimer’s/Dementia care to individuals living with memory impairment. Dara feels so strongly about this cause that she has become a Certified Dementia Practitioner and has made it her mission to educate as many people she can about this disease. Brad has become a speaker for the Alzheimer’s Association and gives presentations around the community.

If you are interested in speaking with someone about receiving services, or becoming a senior helper yourself, you can reach Dara and Brad at 610-590-4888 or at www.seniorcarechestercounty.com

The pAge Turners Reading Group meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 10:30 AM. Come and join us! Our July meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 19. We will be discussing The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty. Cecilia Fitzpatrick, devoted mother, successful Tupperware business owner, and efficient P&C President, has found a letter from her husband. "For my wife, Cecilia Fitzpatrick, to be opened only in the event of my death". But Cecilia's husband isn't dead, he's on a business trip. And when she questions him about it on the phone, Cecilia senses something she hasn't experienced before. John-Paul is lying. What happens next changes Cecilia's formerly blissful suburban existence forever, and the consequences will be life-changing for the most unexpected people.

On Wednesday, August 16 at 10:30 AM the group is discussing The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison. Toni Morrison's first novel, The Bluest Eye, is heralded for its richness of language and boldness of vision. Set in the author's girlhood hometown of Lorain, Ohio, it tells the story of African American, eleven-year-old Pecola Breedlove. Pecola prays for her eyes to turn blue so that she will be as beautiful and beloved as all the blond, blue-eyed children in America. A powerful examination of our obsession with beauty and conformity, Toni Morrison’s virtuosic first novel asks powerful questions about race, class, and gender with the subtlety and grace that have always characterized her writing. Katie will have copies of both books.

PINOCHLE CLASS

Calling all potential pinochle players! Join our Pinochle club for a Beginners Pinochle class, Tuesdays at 1PM.

Summer Heat Waves—Don’t Take Them LightlyWhen summer temperatures rise, extra precautions are necessary to stay healthy and to avoid heat stress. Heat stress occurs when a strain is placed on the body as a result of hot weather.

WHEN ARE YOU AT RISK? When the temperature outdoors is 90 degrees or above and the humidity is 60% or above—whether you are in a very hot room or outdoors.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE WARNING SIGNS? The mild warning signs are decreased energy, slight loss of appetite, and lightheadedness. The moderate signs are heavy sweating, thirst, faintness, giddiness, headache, and confusion. Serious signs are difficulty breathing, dry skin (no sweating), vomiting, diarrhea, muscle cramps, and staggering.

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT FOR MILD OR MODERATE SIGNS? Get in a cool place, drink more fluids, remove excess clothing and rest. If you have serious signs of heat stress, CALL 911!

HOW CAN YOU REDUCE YOUR RISK? Drink cool beverages, especially water! Avoid alcohol and caffeine (coffee, tea, or soda). If your doctor limits your fluid intake, ask them how much you should drink when the weather is hot. Take a cool shower, bath or sponge bath. Wear light-colored, lightweight, loose clothing. Wear a wide-brimmed hat or use an umbrella for shade. Keep windows open! Use insulated drapes. Keep your blinds or shades closed during daylight hours. Use a fan, but only when there is cool air blowing. Never use a fan in a closed room! Don’t use a fan to blow air that is very hot over your body. Stay inside in the heat of the day. Don’t wear clothing that is dark in color, made of nylon related fabrics or that is tight. Don’t eat hot or heavy foods. Don’t increase salt or potassium intake or take salt tablets without your physician’s permission. If possible, stay in an air-conditioned environment during the hottest part of the day. If your home is not air-conditioned, visit a shopping mall, public library, or come to the Center to cool off!

CENTER WILL EXTEND HOURS DURING HEAT EMERGENCIES Please take note! Wayne Senior Center will extend our evening hours from 4pm to 6pm, Monday through Friday, during a Heat Emergency. Please call the Center if

you have any questions or need assistance during a heat emergency.
