The Eleventh Sunday of Ordinary Time “The kingdom of God is as if a man would scatter seed on the land and would sleep and rise night and day and through it all the seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how . . . “It is like a mustard seed that, when it is sown in the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth. But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of plants and puts forth large branches, so the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade.” ‘Soul’ – Bless the 12 Notes Composer Jon Batiste won this year’s Academy Award for Original Music Score for his work on the Pixar film Soul, the animated tale of a jazz pianist who has a near-death experience and gets stuck in the afterlife, causing him to re-think the choices he made in the existence he mostly took for granted.

Batiste, the band leader on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, is the third Black musician to win the Oscar for

original score, after Prince in 1985 for Purple Rain and Herbie Hancock for Round Midnight in 1987. In accepting the Oscar, Batiste celebrated the moment by giving thanks for the “12 notes”: “You know what is deep is that God gave us 12 notes. It is the same 12 notes that Duke Ellington had, that Bach had, Nina Simone . . . Every gift is special. Every contribution with music that comes from the divine into the instruments into the film, into the minds, hearts, and souls of every person who hears it, the stories that happen when you

listen to it and watch it and the stories you share, the moments you make, the memories you create — man, it is just so incredibly special . . . I am thankful to God for those 12 notes.” Every song ever written and ever will be written is composed from the same 12 notes, whether it is “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” or Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. God gives us all “12 notes” to create the soundtrack of our lives. That “scale” includes compassion, mercy, forgiveness, justice, empathy, and peace; everyone can make music with those “notes” — saint and sinner, scientist and laborer, venerable grandparent and curious child, corporate executive, and forgotten homeless. To realize the “music” of God demands the same vision to hope, the love to create for the good of others, and the commitment to grow and nurture as that of the farmer planting seed in today’s Gospel. Jesus challenges us to embrace the faith of the Gospel sower and the hope of the mustard seed: to be willing to plant seeds of kindness and joy wherever and whenever we can, in the sure knowledge that it will, in some way, result in a harvest of God’s life and love; to play the notes we can string together that creates the music of God’s Spirit playing through our lives. Many, Many Thanks Your generous gifts, prayers of blessing, fond memories, and kind words shared with me over these past weeks are most gratefully appreciated. Father Jim

Greetings to everyone at St. John Gualbert Co-Cathedral Parish. I'm very much looking forward to getting to meet everyone at both of my new parishes. I've already met with the parish council at St. John's and the transition council at St. Patrick's and I'm excited for the opportunities we'll have together in the next few years. Of course, no new priest assignment can come without at least a little bit of confusion. As you're all currently aware, the current mass times do not allow for a single priest to have all of the weekend masses. So to prepare for the transition in a few weeks, I'd like to share a short survey with you. The results of the survey will be brought to a joint meeting of both groups so that we can hammer out a schedule moving forward that allows

one priest to celebrate all the masses. With that in mind, I ask that you please be honest with the next few questions as it applies to you and your family. I cannot stress enough that "why" a certain time works for your family is just as important if not more important than which time is best. The "why" gives us much more information so that we can make good decisions. The decisions we make can only be as good as the information we're provided. A pew survey card and an online survey will be available next weekend with the following questions. Please complete either the paper or the online survey to let us know your preferences. Again, I ask your patience as we walk through this process together. I'm looking forward to meeting and walking together with all of you in our journey toward Jesus Christ.

1. Father Matt will be serving at both St. John's and St. Pat's. Under our current schedule, a single

priest cannot celebrate all of the masses, so we must work on a new schedule. Understanding that the 11am TV Mass at St. John's cannot change, what OTHER mass time at St. John's would YOU personally most like to have/keep and WHY?

2. Considering the parish life at St. John's over the last few years, what has most helped you grow in

your relationship with Jesus Christ?

3. Realizing that we can't do everything at once, what is one area that you would like to see us focus on improving here as a parish?

God Bless You, -Fr Matt

A Message from Bishop Mark June 11, 2021

It has come to my attention that some people are concerned that I joined a number of other Bishops in asking that discussion and work on the topic of Eucharistic worthiness be postponed until the full body of Bishops is able to meet in person. Since it is such an important topic, it deserves the kind of discussion that is not easily conducted by a teleconference with upwards of 300 participants. However, it is the format of our meeting this month. continued…

Page 6: The seed is the word of God, Christ is the sower. All who

The President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops acknowledged this concern and has informed us that the Executive Committee presented an Action Item for seeking approval of an outline for a proposed document. If that outline is approved, the Doctrine Committee would begin drafting a text to be presented for consideration at a future meeting of all the Bishops. The same memo indicated that the usual process which includes consultation, modification, or amendments would take place at a future meeting of all the Bishops. The next scheduled meeting is in November.

I am not opposed to the formulation of a document on reception of the Holy Eucharist. I support the recommendations of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith that encourage dialogue among the Bishops in the United States and also with other conferences of Catholic Bishops. I also support the concern of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith that there are other related issues that need further study. Even though I do not look forward to a meeting via teleconference, I am looking forward to the meeting later this month.

In thinking about the topic of Eucharistic worthiness, I am reminded of the need for God’s mercy and healing. In the Communion Rite at Mass, all those who are gathered, whether they are about to receive the sacrament or not, pray aloud: “Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.”

This prayer coincides with what is expressed in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (n. 2272) which addresses the possibility of penalties for those who formally cooperate in the grave offense of abortion. It says: “The Church does not thereby intend to restrict the scope of mercy. Rather, she makes clear the gravity of the crime,” which affects an innocent unborn child, the child’s parents, and the whole of society.

Worthiness, healing, and mercy. We need all these blessings that come from God who is always faithful.
