To IEEE New Orleans Section members,
It is an honor for me to serve as your 2015 Section Chair
and I look forward to working with you to make the New
Orleans Section one to be proud of. Last year was filled
with outstanding events including the popular PES/IAS event
hosting Dr. Schweitzer at the WWII museum along with
other section and chapter technical and social events. We have an outstanding
group of individuals serving on the Executive Committee and I’m proud to
work alongside this passionate group of volunteers. If you haven’t checked out
the section website, please do so. Garrett Fried and others have done a great
job of updating and sprucing up the site to make it more user-friendly. Thanks
also to Tammy Lapeyrouse for volunteering to revitalize the Section Bits and
get the word out on our latest IEEE news.
If you have ideas for technical meetings or programs, please reach out to any-one on the EXCOM. Hope to see you at our next event!

The 7th Annual IEEE Green Technologies Conference (GREENTECH 2015)
was conceived to address one of the most pressing challenges of our time:
securing green and clean energy sources for the 21st century to protect the
environment and help build a more resilient power grid. This will require a
collaborative effort from many disciplines of engineer-
ing, science, architecture and policy as well as among
utilities, vendors, regulators, and academics. Electrical
energy industry is in a critical phase, as initiatives we
take today will affect how the grid will be operated
for many years to come. For more information, check
out the website: http://ieeegreentech.org/

Back on October 2, 2014, the IEEE New Orleans
Section got up close and personal with an engineer-
ing rock star. Digital protection pioneer Dr. Ed-
mund Schweitzer, founder of Schweitzer Engineer-
ing Laboratories, joined us for dinner at the Nation-
al WWII Museum. The dinner was a joint event sponsored by two groups from the New Orleans
chapter: the Power and Energy Society and the Industry Applications Society.
The event was a huge success, with over 150 attendees. Dr. Schweitzer ad-
dressed the need for transmission services that can accommodate fluctua-
tions in generation and quickly bring the system back into balance after
events. He talked with attendees about shaping a system that can accept, op-
erate and protect new, alternative sources of energy. In addition to the din-
ner and speech, participants were able to tour the WWII Museum and enjoy
camaraderie with fellow IEEE Members. For pictures of the event, check out
this site: Dr. Schweitzer Visits New Orleans Photos.
Highlights of Recent Events
Dr. Schweitzer’s Visit
On December 18, 2014, The IEEE New
Orleans Section held its Annual Past
Chairs’ Night at the Walnut Room at the
New Orleans Lakefront Airport. The event
was an opportunity to network and recog-
nize those individuals who’ve played an im-
portant role in our Section’s history. Every-
one in attendance enjoyed the food and the festive ambiance.
Past Chair’s Night
The IEEE Board of Directors met in New Orleans for its series of meetings
February 4-9, 2015. In conjunction with this event, we were very fortunate to
have Mr. Barry Shoop, 2016 president –elect of IEEE, speak to the New Orle-
ans Section on February 4. 2015. IEEE-USA President Jim Jefferies was also in
attendance. It was a great opportunity for section members to meet the volun-
teers who lead IEEE, the world’s largest professional technical organization,
and enjoy some “Cajun food” with them at Five Happiness Restaurant.

The scope of the Industry Applications Society, as a transnational organi-
zation, is the advancement of the theory and practice of electrical and
electronic engineering in the development, design, manufacture and appli-
cation of electrical systems, apparatus, devices and controls to the pro-
cesses and equipment of industry and commerce; the promotion of safe,
reliable and economic installations; industry leadership in energy conser-
vation and environmental, health, and safety issues; the creation of volun-tary engineering standards and recommended practices; and the profes-
sional development of its membership.

The Power & Energy Society (PES) provides the world's largest forum for sharing
the latest in technological developments in the electric power industry, for devel-
oping standards that guide the development and construction of equipment and
systems, and for educating members of the industry and the general public. Mem-
bers of the Power & Energy Society are leaders in this field, and they — and their
employers — derive substantial benefits from involvement with this unique and
outstanding association.

The IEEE New Orleans Section and PES had the first 2015 joint technical meeting titled “Challenges
and Opportunities Associated with the New Technology and System” on Jan 26 at the Entergy Build-
ing downtown. It was presented by Dr. Kannan Tinnium (Technology Leader – Electrical Technolo-
gies and System, GE global Research, India). Dr. Tinnium was introduced by Mark McCulla, Chair of
New Orleans IEEE Section 2015. The meeting, attended by 35 professionals, was very successful.

Life members must be at least 65 years of age and have been a mem-
ber of IEEE or one of its predecessor societies for such a period that
the sum of his/her age and his/her years of membership equals or ex-
ceeds 100 years. When an individual achieves Life member (LM) status,
their basic membership dues and Region assessments are waived on 1
January of the year following attainment of LM status.

PACE (Professional Activities Committees for Engineers) is a grassroots net-
work of IEEE volunteers and committees organized at the section and chap-
ter level in the United States with support from their respective regions and
IEEE-USA. The goal of the PACE Network is to promote the professional interests of IEEE's
U.S. members as well as provide a mechanism for communication of members' views on
their professional needs. IEEE-USA's success is attributed largely in part to all the hard work
out forth by volunteers from the PACE Network. In return, the IEEE-USA National PACE
Committee is working to better serve your interests with more programs, better communi-
cation, and more opportunities for professional development.
