THE LITURGY OF THE WORD FIRST READING 1 Samuel 3:3B-10, 19 RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 40 Cantor, then All: Owen Alstott

SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 6:13C-15A, 17-20 ALLELUIA Chant, Mode VI

GOSPEL John 1:29-34 HOMILY CREED

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,

consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

(all bow through “and became man”)

and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The October 2014 publication of Time Magazine contained a review of a recently published book by Katha Pollit entitled, "Pro: Reclaiming Abortion Rights". The review indicated that the author, Ms. Pollit, is making a case that abortion is a social good. This shocking argument included her observation that abortion can be an act of love which is good for the family. In her world, abortion is simply about a woman and her rights over and against an unborn child - no apologies necessary and no regrets needed. It seems to me that this radical notion reflects a disturbing development in the pro-abortion movement.

I recently had the privilege of viewing a 3D video recording of an ultrasound on a four month old unborn child. The baby's features were clear as it was moving around and yawning in his mother's womb. To suggest that to kill this unborn child could ever be an "act of love" is a profound evil. It is a perversion of the truth and a powerful example of the culture of death.

This week we will mark the sad anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision in which the Supreme Court legalized abortion in our country. Here at the Cathedral, I will be offering the Noon Mass on Thursday with the intention of increasing respect for human life. In addition, we will offer the Holy Rosary at 3:00 p.m. followed by the lighting of the luminaria on the steps of the Cathedral. This prayer and symbolic gesture will be one simple way in which we can demonstrate our solid commitment to a culture of life. Please join with me this Thursday in person and/or in a spirit of prayer for the unborn and for an end to all crimes against human life. Asking for the prayers of Our Lady of Lourdes, I remain,

Sincerely in Christ,

Rev. Darrin Connall Rector

Good Bye Deacon Victor

Deacon Victor Lopez has been serving our Cathedral Parish for almost 20 years in a variety of ministries. Most recently, of course, he has served us in his capacity as a deacon. A few months ago Deacon Victor requested to be reassigned to St. Peter Parish which is much closer to his home. The request was granted by the bishop. We are currently working with Deacon Victor’s schedule so we can hold a farewell reception soon. Details will be forthcoming. Thank you Deacon Victor!

Scriptural Reflection January 18, 2015 – Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

1 Sm 3: 3B-10, 19; Ps 40: 2, 4, 7-10; 1 Cor 6: 13C-15A, 17-20; Jn 1: 35-42

A popular hymn used in many Catholic

churches is Here I am Lord. That hymn is

based in part on our first reading from the

Book of Samuel. The Lord wants us to

respond just the way Samuel does in the

reading. God calls each of us to

discipleship through lives of stewardship.

Just as Samuel was confused, we, too, may

fail to understand what God is calling us to

at times. Nevertheless, just like Samuel

we do need to respond “Here I am Lord.”

That is not always easy and it can be uncomfortable at times. Eli

instructs Samuel to respond “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.”

Samuel does so and “the Lord was with him.”

Our challenge is first to hear God’s call. It is there always, but we must

listen for it. Then we need to respond to that call, and we need to

respond in ways that show we recognize that the call is to service and the

call is for us to be disciples. It is only implied initially, but it is clear that

the Lord is calling Samuel by name. In the same way God calls each of

us by name. We need to hear that as Samuel did, and we need to respond

as Samuel did, “Here I am Lord. I come to do your will.”
