About Today’s Service
“The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” God gave His people the
Sabbath as a time of rest to remember the great things He has done for us. The
Pharisees turned that gift into works-righteousness, which Jesus masterfully reveals. In
receiving Word and Sacrament, we find true Sabbath rest—Jesus Christ. The devil’s
assaults on the jars of clay that we are cannot take that rest from us, for the power
belongs to God.
About Holy Communion
In the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod we believe that in Communion, Jesus is really
and truly present. He gives us Himself to assure us that in Him we are forgiven. It also is
a statement of unity, that all who come to Communion are in agreement of faith and
doctrine.
Because this is something very special, and is more than bread and wine, we ask that you
first talk to the pastor before coming up for Communion.
You are certainly Welcome at the Altar and may receive a Blessing at the rail simply by
waving off the acceptance of the elements. Some will cross their arms in front to signify
this desire for simply receiving a Blessing in Christ. Thank you.

Opening Hymn
804 O Worship the King
5 Frail children of dust
and feeble as frail,
In Thee do we trust,
nor find Thee to fail.
Thy mercies, how tender,
how firm to the end,
Our maker, defender,
redeemer, and friend!

Invocation
Please stand as you are able
The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.
P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins
and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.
P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.
C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We
have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done
and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole
heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your
present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have
mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your
will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.
P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake
forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His
authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the
T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.

Service of the Word
Introit Ps. 62:5–8; antiphon: Ps. 62:1
P For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation.
C For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him.
P He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
C On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God.
P Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge
for us.
C Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and will be forever. Amen.
P For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation.

Greeting and Prayer of the Day
P The Lord be with you.
C And with thy spirit.
P Let us pray.
C Eternal God, Your Son Jesus Christ is our true Sabbath rest. Help us to keep
each day holy by receiving His Word of comfort that we may find our rest in
Him, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and
forever. Amen.

Old Testament Reading Deuteronomy 5:12–15 12
“‘Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded you. 13
Six
days you shall labor and do all your work, 14
but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your
God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or
your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or the sojourner who is
within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. 15
You
shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you
out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the LORD your God
commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.
L This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
Epistle 2 Corinthians 4:5–12 5For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your
servants for Jesus’ sake. 6For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our
hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 7But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God
and not to us. 8We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to
despair; 9persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed;
10always carrying in the
body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. 11
For we
who live are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may
be manifested in our mortal flesh. 12
So death is at work in us, but life in you.
L This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.

Alleluia and Verse
Holy Gospel Mark 2:23–28
P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the second chapter.
23
One Sabbath [Jesus] was going through the grainfields, and as they made their way, his
disciples began to pluck heads of grain. 24
And the Pharisees were saying to him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the
Sabbath?” 25
And he said to them, “Have you never read what David did, when he was in need
and was hungry, he and those who were with him: 26
how he entered the house of God, in the
time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any
but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him?” 27
And he said to them,
“The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28
So the Son of Man is lord even of
the Sabbath.”
P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Nicene Creed
C I believe in one God,
the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth
and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of His Father before all worlds,
God of God, Light of Light,
very God of very God,
begotten, not made,
being of one substance with the Father,
by whom all things were made;
who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven
and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary
and was made man;
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered and was buried.
And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures
and ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of the Father.
And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead,
whose kingdom will have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord and giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified,
who spoke by the prophets.
And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,
I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,
and I look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life T of the world to come. Amen.

Service of the Sacrament
Preface
P The Lord be with you.
C And also with you.
P Lift up your hearts.
C We lift them to the Lord.
P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C It is right to give Him thanks and praise.
P It is truly meet, right, and beneficial that we should at all times and in all places give
thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ,
our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by His glorious
resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore with angels and
archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious
name, evermore praising You and singing:
Sanctus
15
Prayer of Thanksgiving
P Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You
created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior.
With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice
of His body and His blood on the cross.
Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive,
renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and
drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from
the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His
kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You
alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God,
now and forever.
C Amen.
The Words of Our Lord

566 By Grace I'm Saved
17
5 By grace to timid hearts that tremble,
In tribulation’s furnace tried,
By grace, in spite of fear and trouble,
The Father’s heart is open wide.
Where could I help and strength secure
If grace were not my anchor sure?
6 By grace! On this I’ll rest when dying;
In Jesus’ promise I rejoice;
For though I know my heart’s condition,
I also know my Savior’s voice.
My heart is glad, all grief has flown
Since I am saved by grace alone.
