THE SECOND CITY WINS CREATIVITY AWARD AT AWARDS CEREMONY
With an estimated 15-18,000 in attendance, the 2017 World Finals Awards Ceremony took place at the Jack Breslin Student Events Center on Saturday evening culminating months of hard work, practice and dedication with a joyful evening of acknowledgments and celebrations. The arena was packed and cheers reverberated up to the rafters. There were plenty of glow sticks, sparkly hats, light up gadgets and blinky pins. Florida represented with a whole section sporting bright pink flamingo hats and clutching blow-up flamingos. In fact, they took first place for the most creative booth at the Creativity Festival. Creativity was certainly a word that popped up frequently throughout the evening.
One highlight was when the Creativity Award was presented to The Second City, a well-known improvisational comedy enterprise headquartered in Chicago. Accepting the award on behalf of this renowned establishment was Jeff Poole. “As the head of the Kid and Teen Program at The Second City, I see how important creativity is to children both in play and in school and that
BY LORI LANSPEARY
is why I am honored to accept this award on behalf of The Second City.” When asked how familiar he was with Odyssey of the Mind, Jeff responded, “In 1993 as an eighth grader at Ramsey Junior High in Fort Smith, Arkansas, I competed in Odyssey of the Mind and won
a creative writing award. It was the first time I was ever recognized for something I had written and it had a profound impact on me.” When he announced that he was a past Odyssey participant, the crowd went wild. Jeff went on to emphasize that they have a saying at The Second City. “If you’re good at improv, you’re good at life.”
Odyssey teaches lessons in persistence, trying, failing and trying again, creative problem-solving and of course the extremely useful concept of teamwork. The definition of an odyssey is a long journey filled with adventures. It appeared that during this week at Michigan State University everyone was having an adventure of a lifetime. Congratulations to one and all.

WRAP UP & CONGRATULATIONSWhile there are many different
nationalities and backgrounds gathered at World Finals, those differences are considered a benefit while you’re here. In fact, all those differences are embraced. With Odyssey of the Mind as common ground, all else is a chance to grow and come together to find creative solutions and experience new growth.
From this growth, you will continue to do great things. Each year we leave confident in our future as we see such wonderful and skillful youth preparing to enter our future workforce. You are now part of a global community — from Switzerland, India, Poland, China and
beyond. You will set the example for others to follow.
Remember, whether your team placed 3rd, 13th, or 30th at World Finals, you’ve still made your mark out of the hundreds of thousands of teams that solved each problem this year.
As Dr. Sam likes to say, you have the greatest minds in the world, so be proud of your ideas! Sometimes differences scare others, but persevere in expressing your creative ideas and be confident in your skills – they’ve already brought you this far.
Of course all of this isn’t possible without our dedicated volunteers, coaches, and parents. Your work facilitates our future innovators. We are also proud of all the alumni that have
come back as adults to volunteer. We know you will help keep the program growing so we can continue with our mission.
A special nod also goes out to the Odyssey Angels program and this year’s group, Hope Heroes, you have shown the world how to use your Odyssey skills to help others in your community!
Creative Competitions, Inc. is honored to be part of such a wonderful, creative family. Thank you all! To be able to witness such talented students and inspiring coaches is amazing. Best wishes to everyone – and here’s hoping you have another year filled with creativity and fun!

2017 ODYSSEY OF THE MIND WORLD FINALS RESULTS
Horizon Elementary School, Johnston, IAProblem 1, Division I
There was no escaping this team’s outstanding creativity and astounding engineering! They had an entire intricate system of tracks for their vehicles with a series of pressure sensitive pads that started a cascade of motors and springs. This changed the layout of the track, allowing the vehicle to weave and dodge through the getaway zone. The team’s effort, dedication, and risk-taking were evident to the judges through both the inspection of the craftsmanship and the discussion with the team.
Geneseo Central Sch, Geneseo, NYProblem 1, Division III
Time and time again, throughout its performance, this team wowed the judges with the unexpected ways they solved this problem combining science, engineering with dramatic panache. It had a parking garage that automatically lowered each vehicle and a trio of vehicles with a unique means of travel. A tortoise walked using fully articulated legs and a chameleon moved by grabbing a track with its tongue while changing color to blend in with the background. Finally, a vehicle used an electrically controlled pneumatic piston to leap off the end of a track, flipping 360 degrees to avoiding being caught before righting itself and continuing on its trip.
Raffles Girls Secondary School, SingaporeProblem 2, Division II
This team literally stretched bottle parts farther than these judges had ever seen! Some examples include beautiful flowers made from clear egg cartons, realistic roses made from shards of plastic bottles --curled by candlelight, a soccer ball made of twisted plastic rope, and a lava lamp made by gluing bottles together so airtight that the creation could hold liquid. The team completely transformed every bottle into something totally new and unexpected. It treated plastic as a raw material that barely resembled its original form!
Stow Isierski Wyobraznik Warszawa, Poland Problem 3, Division II
All the elements of the team’s solution -- backdrops, furniture, artwork and costumes –were made from over 120,000 individually rolled newspaper sticks. This team dazzled the judges with its intricacy by spending over seven months rolling newspaper into 4 – 12” sticks and creatively weaving together its stage set and props. Every inch of the stage was a piece of current newsprint art that could be hung in a museum. The team went a step further by collecting newspapers
from the actual places where the time travelers went—Russia and the Netherlands. They even skillfully made their required recognizable art from this amazing medium.
South Mecklenburg HS, Charlotte, NCProblem 3, Division III
A 15-foot tall haunted house transformed into a raven with a 24' wingspan, an old-fashioned dress opened to reveal a working puppet theatre in its skirt, an anthropomorphic shadow trailing behind the imposing Edgar Allan OMER. The team incorporated all of Poe's greatest works into its beautiful, multi-functional, and downright scary sets, costumes, and props. The effect was frighteningly good - you could say it was Poe-fect Style!
Algood Middle School, Algood TNProblem 4, Division II
This team took paint by numbers and repurposing to a new artistic level. During an entertaining game show, contestants played operation on a towering life-sized replica made out of milk cartons – it even buzzed with a doorbell attached to a red light bulb! Another fascinating prop was an OMER face mosaic. When the structure snapped under a stack of weights, members picked up the mosaic to reveal hundreds of crayons, that when precisely assembled, came together to form OMER’s face. In a flash, one performer yanked the cardboard out of place and the tubes came thundering down, spilling a colorful disarray on the floor as the audience gave an audible gasp.
Qingdao Taiping Rd. Pri. SchQingdao, ChinaProblem 4, Division Ii
This team embodied the spirit of the problem using intricate props, dazzling costumes, body language, and a strong foundation of teamwork to present a solution executed with clean precision. Opening with a golden bear destroying the gate to a garden, members worked together to assemble a fruit wall. Then with the help of a general dressed in aluminum foil, three team members precisely measured multiple pieces to assemble sections tubes and complete the structural representation, relying upon encouraging signals from their peers over spoken dialogue, demonstrating their strength in teamwork. This same teamwork constructed the fruity wall in eight minutes, built a rich backdrop with moving boats and whirling gadgets, created an impressive structure, and captivated the audience with movement and dance to creatively communicate their story of neighborly harmony.

Wuhan College of Ind Tech Wuhan, ChinaProblem 3, Division IVThis team revived the art of needle point and elevated paper folding to new heights. It spent months totally recreating a classic painting through the art of needle point – every detail and color was captured so precisely that the final product tricked our eyes into believing yarn was paint. VanGogh’s famous Sunflowers came to life through thousands of pieces of folded paper layered with paint and shredded paper. The attention to detail and artistic quality of the works truly allowed the artists creativity to shine.

CHECK-OUT REMINDERSFROM HOUSING
One of the biggest events at the Odyssey
of the Mind World Finals is the International Festival, held yesterday at Jenison Field House. At this high-energy event, teams from around the world can sell souvenirs and hand-made items from their home countries to hundreds of other Odyssey teams. This cherished event is a way for countries to show off their cultures, raise money for their individual Odyssey teams and squeeze in time for a little more pin trading. This year’s festival featured booths from all over and the merchandise was flying off the tables.
“We sold all our t-shirts and pins in less than an hour!” exclaimed Damon Lau from Hong Kong. “After we’re done selling we’ll explore the festival more, but it was important we work as a team to make our sales.” Other booths agreed that the money made at International Festival is an important way to off-set the cost of a long Odyssey trip. “To help pay for this trip we brought suitcases full of t-shirts and Swiss chocolate you can’t get in America,” said Sira Rosende. “I had to pack light to make room for all the stuff we were selling!” Sira’s sales partner Elena Jelisavac said selling is fun and a great way to meet kids from around the world. “We get to do the selling and I like to get emails from kids I meet to stay in touch. It’s kind of work but it’s mostly fun!”
Not everyone at International Festival is working a booth, many are there because it’s a hot hub for pin trading. The middle of Jenison Field House was a flurry of active trading that put to shame the bustle of the New York Stock Exchange. “I’ll be here for easily four hours just trading pins,” said Cadence Michels from Delaware. “I love it because I meet so many new kids and it’s a fun way to unwind after the stress of
