THE SEASONS

Édouard Lock (2014, SPCD)

As in his previous adaptations of famous pieces of classical music created in conjunction with the renowned composer Gavin Bryars, thecelebrated founder of La La La Human Steps has now taken on Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. In a series of 12 tableaux evoking the 12 months of theyear, he subjects the 12 dancers to the dizzying speed and extreme precision of energetic, angular and sinuous movement. Flooding the stage

with his own special chiaroscuro ambience, he has choreographed the lighting to create dazzling fast-motion effects that reinforce the impact ofsudden slo-mo moments. A pure delight heightened by a set design by the painter and sculptor Armand Vaillancourt.

MAMIHLAPINATAPAI

Jomar Mesquita in association with Rodrigo de Castro (2012, SPCD)

The Amerindian word Mamihlapinatapai is listed in the Guinness Bookof Records as the “most succinct word” describing a very complexidea. It refers to an expressive and meaningful silence, “a look sharedby two people, both wishing that the other will take the initiative tooffer something they both desire but are unwilling to suggestthemselves.” That is precisely the theme of this piece by JomarMesquita, director of the Mimulus Dance Company, a work thatevokes the desire for love among 4 couples in a lasciviousdeconstruction of the folk dances of Brazil.

GNAWA

Nacho Duato (2005, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago; 2009, reprise SPCD)

A major figure of contemporary European ballet and currently Artistic Director of the Staatsballett Berlin, Nacho Duato is renowned for his fluiddances and his interest in great existential questions. He and his 14 dancers take the audience beyond the edge of the Mediterranean toencounter the descendants of the Gnawa people and their spiritual practices. Skillfully using four elements to illustrate the superior forces of theuniverse, he has created an elegant, sensual and harmonious work that conjures a North African atmosphere and is performed to hypnoticmusic.

SÃO PAULO COMPANHIA DE DANÇA, ASTOUNDING SUCCESS

Since its founding in 2008 by the São Paulo state government, SPDC has been under the masterful direction of the dancer, writer and directorInês Bogéa. In less than a decade, she has produced some 40 dance pieces, half of them original works. The company has performed on thestages of 60 cities in 8 countries in South America, Asia and Europe. The diversity of its repertoire, plus the virtuosity and versatility of thedancers, have led to its astounding success.

“It is amazing to see how assuredly and with what determination this young company […] has climbed to the very top of the dance scene in theState of São Paulo.” (Danse, Paris)

“Artistic director Inês Bogéa has, among other accomplishments, managed to raise the reputationfor excellence of the São PauloCompanhia de Dança by invitingbold choreographers such asÉdouard Lock to create works forthe company dancers. Bycompleting the evening withpieces by Nacho Duato andJomar Mesquita, she gives us anidea of the diversity of the youngcompany’s repertoire andprovides an enticing look atBrazilian culture. Delectable.”
