The Science of BiologyChapter 1
What is science?• Science is a way of studying the natural
world. Scientists are people who are curious people.
Do you think the diver is a scientist?
• Marine Biologist: are scientists who study living things in the ocean.
• In this case these marine biologists are studying the coral reefs.
What is Biology?• Biology is a natural science.
• It is the science that deals with the study of living things.
Some other fields that make up natural sciences:
• Chemistry
• Physics
• Astronomy
• Geology
Branches of Biology• Earth is home to millions of kinds of
living things. All of these living things are studied by biologists. For this reason, the field of biology is divided into smaller branches.
• Most biologists study only 1 branch of biology which is called specialization.
• Examples: Botany, Zoology, Ecology…
• Can you name any other fields?
Branches of BiologyBranch of Bio. What is studied Careers
Anatomy Structures that make up living things
Physician Chiropractor
Genetics Heredity of living things Geneticist
Plant Breeder
Microbiology Microscopic living things
Microbiologist Bacteriologist
Physiology Functions of the structures that make up living things
Physiologist
Internist
Taxonomy Classification of living things
Taxonomist
Biology, Technology, and Society• Technology: is the use of science to
solve everyday problems.
• It is often called applied science.
• Biology can be used to solve everyday problems.
• The use of biology to solve everyday problems is called biotechnology.
3 fields that use biotechnology
1. Medicine
2. Agriculture
3. Industry
Scientific Method: • is a problem solving model used by scientists.
• It can be broken down into 7 parts.
• However you do not always have to use all the parts of the scientific method.
• Every problem is unique and needs to be solved in a different way.
Scientific Method:1. Identify & State the Problem
2. Gather Information
3. State a Hypothesis
4. Design an Experiment
5. Make Observations & Record Data
6. Organize & Analyze Data
7. State a Conclusion
