Date of Birth : 22nd October 1990Hometown : Veurne, Belgium
How is school different in your home country? Is it easier or harder? My school in Belgium is tougher than in Malaysia, we have classes from8.10a.m until 4.15p.m. We don’t take naps in the afternoon, so we don’thave so much spare time. There are many streams to take in secondaryschool. So when you are twelve you choose a stream, like hairdressing, economics, languages, Mathematics, Latin, designing, painting, etc… I doMathematics and Science, almost the same as Science stream in SMI butI have also language subjects like French, Dutch, English and German. Sostudying in SMI was not that difficult. The canteen in SMI was like heavenfor me, all the food here is more delicious than the ones in my school.
What is your favourite Malaysian food?Difficult question, the Malaysian dishes are really special, so it ’s really hard to say that I onlylike one thing. For Chinese food I like ‘kueh teow’ and laksa (but I am not sure anymore if thoseare Chinese) and everything with noodles :) For Indian food my favourite is definitely ‘roti boom’.And for the Malay food, everything that is spicy and ‘pisang goreng’
What do you think about the culture and lifestyle here in Malaysia?Malaysian lifestyle is very relaxing, that’s really cool, the multi-culture is very special.I realise that religion in Asia is more important than in Europe, and sometimes I have difficultieswith those differences. No country is perfect.
What was your first impression when you first stepped in Malaysia? My first impression? I almost fainted, it was so hot and my body couldn’t stand it. The crazyheat!!
Please tell Malaysians about your culture, what would it be?We love chocolate; I used to eat one or two bars, two, sometimes three times a day! When youcome to Belgium you have to try the Belgian French fries, they are the best in Belgium. Most ofthe people are white, maybe 5 percent are immigrants. We are not really religious, only the eldersgo to the church. We like to travel, Belgium is small. When I want to visit Paris, I only need todrive 4 hours, and going to London by plane only takes one hour. People here are taller thanAsian. We eat bread in the morning and evening, for lunch we eat meat with some vegetablesand potatoes, no rice. The food is not spicy, so when you come, bring along your chili sauce withyou. Never say LAH, because people will not understand you.
Can you describe your family background? My mom is an African, my dad is a European. In Malaysia you would call it a mixed marriage, Ithink. So I have three sisters, no brothers (I pity my dad), I am the third child. My dad is not rich,he is just a teacher in a college, my mom is a house wife. My dad met my mom in Congo (Africa).I think he was working there. One day he went for a holiday in some places, and there he fell inlove with my mom. They moved to Belgium (that’s where my dad came from). So I have never metmy mom’s siblings except my grandmother. Other than that, I have siblings from my dad’s side(they are all European).
What was your first impression towards St. Michael’s Institution?Beautiful building, it ’s more beautiful than my university now (that’s a really old, grey building, very depressing :p) Nice teachers, funny students, a lot of guys, very organized, strict (I never hadassembly in my whole life except in Malaysia) Sports day was really nice.
What are the some of the challenges you have faced throughout your stay here in this country and in SMI?Wearing uniform, facing the heat, trying to speak Mandarin, Cantonese, Tamil and Malay. Thefasting during Ramadan was also hard to observe. Wearing different clothes, not looking sexy.
What are the memories you will treasure the most, here in SMI?Sports day, recess, assembly, my friends, some teachers.

Place of origin : Aachen, GermanyAge : 17School : Viktoria gymnasium, Aachen
Family background in GermanyWell, I’ve four family members. My father is a carpenter and my motheris helping out in a hospital for ill children. My elder sister is now 19years old and she’s still in school.
How did you get the chance to involve in this programme? In Germany, anyone who has good grades in test can apply for thisexchange programme. We applied through AFS Intercultural Programmes.AFS is one of the world’s largest community-based volunteer organizationsdedicated to building a just and peaceful world through internationalstudent exchange. More than 13,000 students, young adults and teachers participate in AFSprogrammes each year.
What is considered good grades? We have six grades in total. Grade one is the best. Even if we get Grade four and below, we canstill apply for this programme. The only thing is that once we return to Germany, we’ll have torepeat the year. When we start our school at seventeen, we have to make a decision on thechoices of subjects to study. We can choose either seven or eight subjects for our studies.
Are there any criteria to apply? Not exactly, we need to have enough money for expenditures. Besides, they also consider theapplicants’ character.
How many students came together with you?I came alone by airplane. When I arrived in Kuala Lumpur airport, there were seven students fromthe United States. I stayed in a hotel with them for three days before I came to Ipoh. All in all, there are about 100 students from all over the world in Malaysia.
What did you do during the three days?Basically, during the three day orientation, we were given a briefing about this country, such asvalues and manners, culture and heritage, ethnic groups, safety tips and rules.
How long will you be staying here in Malaysia?I’m staying here for a year, until next year July, 2010.
How much is the payment for the whole trip?I just have to pay for the flight which was about RM5,000 and expenses for trip. This is becauseAFS is a non-profit organization. For once, I’m using my own savings to buy things here.
How were the reactions of your family when you wanted to go for student exchange programme? Most of my relatives were very happy when they heard where I would be going.
What about your friends? They supported me but they said they would miss me.
Why did you choose to come to Malaysia?I had to choose between eight countries, to one of which I’d be sent. Malaysia was one of thembecause I think it would be very interesting to see a lot of different people, religions and lifestylesin one place.
Have you ever heard of this country before you came?Yes. The first time I heard about this country was in school, but the name “Malaysia” was onlymentioned. So I didn’t really know anything else until two or three months ago; when I got theopportunity to come here.

Does that mean Malaysia was only mentioned but you just wanted to take your chance to try to visitMalaysia? Before choosing the country, I’d searched the internet to look for the languages, cultures and ethicsof forty countries. New Zealand was my first choose but due to some circumstances, the person incharge of the organization wanted me to wait for a month, and I didn’t want to wait for so long,so I chose another country which was Malaysia, the place I’m in now.
What was your first impression when you stepped out of the airport? My first thought was “Yeah! Summer!”
How do you find Malaysia? So far, I really like Malaysia. But I think I haven’t even seen half of all the great things here.
What is your favourite food so far?I like nearly every type here.
Have you tried local fruits such as durian, rambutan and mangosteen?Yes I tried some of the fruits but I couldn’t recall the names. I like durian!
Do you like the weather here?I LOVE the weather here! In Germany it’s sometimes very cold and there’s sometimes snow. I hateit. I’m glad that I’m missing the winter this year.
Which family are you staying with right now?I’m staying with a very nice Indian family. I have two younger brothers, who’re studying in St.Michael’s Institution too.
Which forms are they in?The elder brother is in Form 5 whereas the younger brother is in Form 3. Both of them are sittingfor major examinations this year.
Have you been to places around Malaysia? Can you share your experiences and feelings?I visited a Malay family in Penang during Hari Raya Holidays and I stayed there for nine days. They’re very nice to me. The most exciting part is that I went to many open houses and visitedthe relatives of a Malay family within the week. It was the time where I learnt about Malaycultures. Besides, we went for a walk in a rainforest, went to the beach, hill, shopping complexsand also bathed in the hot springs.
Have you thought of visiting Sabah and Sarawak which are at The East Coast? At first when I went through the internet, I was kind of curious to visit both Sabah and Sarawakwhich have more different cultures compared to the Peninsular Malaysia. But the director of theorganization told me that I haven’t got any injection. Thus, to prevent the chances of gettingunknown disease, that is why I didn’t visit the two states.
What was your first impression towards this school?St. Michael’s Institution is a very, very big school.
Are there any differences in the education system and subjects compared to Germany?Yes. The whole system in Germany is different. We don’t choose between Arts and Science, forexample. We don’t have uniforms and we’ve much less school rules.
What do you like the most in this school?I think, what I like the most is that there’re many types of activities in the afternoon. We don’thave that many in Germany.
There was a surprise birthday celebration prepared by your classmates from LSS3 for you, how did youfeel?I was very surprised. I’d been here for a few weeks but I’d visited other places on and off, I’dskipped school very often and due to this, I didn’t have strong bond of friendship with them. However, they’re very nice to me.
How do you think about the culture and lifestyle here?I know about the Indian and Malay lifestyle, and I LOVE them.
What’re the upcoming activities you’re looking forward to?Our organization is holding World Congress at the end of October. It’s on for a week and studentexchanges from all over the world are gathering there. This grand event is held in Kuala Lumpur. Ifeel so lucky to have the chance to attend since it was held in different countries around theworld.

For a prestigious school like St. Michael’s, the position of a prefect is a position of responsibilityand one which provides an important connection between pupils and staff.
Becoming a prefect is a valuable goal and the position of prefect forms a valuable part of a pupil’spersonal development, opening their mind to new levels of responsibility and participation in a verypositive way. Prefects are a tremendous help to the school and play a particularly important role inmentoring younger pupils.
Each year, a group of Form 1 and Form 2 students are carefully selected to form the Junior PrefectorialBoard and to take on responsibilities to help the school to grow and develop ideas. During the selectionprocess, consideration is given to the following criteria (in no particular order): reliability, maturity, organisational skills, punctuality, availability, disciplinary record, participation in extra-curricularactivities and inter-personal skills.
The year 2009 has been a challenging yet rewarding one for us as prefects. Being elected as prefectsis not only an honour but has also served as a platform for us to holistically develop as a person.
Prefects not only organize and lead, but they are seen as respectable role models for other studentsto look up to. As prefects, we aspire to inspire many students and spark their interest in variousareas of the school.
During our tenure as prefects, we built new skills, fostered friendships between students and in manylearning processes, we built character. We learnt that effective leadership is only possible if eachstudent leader recognizes the fact that being a leader not only summons one to lead but also toserve.
Our gratitude is conveyed to the School Principal, the afternoon supervisor, Encik Borhan, our teacheradvisors, Mr. Peter Khiew and Pn. Eswari and also to all the teachers for their faith they had in uswhich has enabled us to effectively lead the student body this year.
Reported by: Junior Head Prefect, Darren Lee Yeu Jyn
