First Year, First ShowWelcome to the little village of Kharagpur, a place you will learn to call

It’s a place where you’ll live in dilapidated buildings amongst creatures of the wild but is also so competitive that only the fittest survive. If you’re in MMM, IIT KGP gives you your first chance of exercising franchise as early as a fortnight of entering the hallowed portals. All the halls elect their own Hall Council, which includes the happa and his secys (mess, library, soc-cult, sports, etc.).

Fresher events, organized by the TSG in the beginning of the autumn semester, help first years get accustomed to the new place as well as give them a first taste of the extra-curricular texture here. Events like Dumb Charades, What's the Good Word?, Hindi and English Creative Writing, Quizzes, painting, sketching and cartooning prov ide an exciting distraction from the initial adjustment hiccups. Get to know your Library

The extensive Central Library is touted by some as the largest technical library in Asia. It is one of the few places in Kgp where you can sleep/dream and study without any hindrance. The CL turns into a popular hotspot-cum-hangout place about two weeks before exams, especially when F-127 (the local muggu room) is full. Here's why the library rocks:

Digital LibraryStocked with sufficient, Windows-powered computers, the Digital Library has much to offer. All web lectures and PowerPoint presentations can be conveniently accessed here. The place offers high-speed, uninterrupted net access 24/7 so if you feel that the CIC (Computer Information Centre) is too far from your hall or if you are unfamiliar with Unix-based systems, now you know where to go. However, keep in mind that the digital library is closed on weekends. It also offers diverse online facilities ranging from searching books to viewing video lectures.

The LoungeReplete with plush sofas and a wide array of magazines and newspapers to choose from, the lounge provides a congenial environment for you to relax and unwind.

The Journal sectionWith strong air-conditioning, this is the perfect spot to hide from the sweltering summer heat. Oh, and there are a few bleeding-edge research publications in here too if you're so inclined.

Wi-FiThe whole library is a Wi-Fi zone. So you can bring in your laptops anytime, make yourselves comfortable on the comfy couches and with speedy wireless net at your disposal, what's not to love?

Road Trip!Your guide to fun and frolic beyond the Insti Walls

The Net Demystified!New to working from college networks? Don’t know what all the terminology means? Here’s a quick glossary.

LAN: Local Area Network. Every computer inside the campus forms a part of our LAN.IP Address: This looks something like 10.101.2.3 and it is unique to each computer on the network.Proxy: This is our LAN's gateway to the internet. These are the only computers on our network that are connected to the wider internet and hence any program that requires to connect to the internet must be configured to use one of our proxy servers. There are multiple proxy servers on our LAN which means if you seem to be connected to the network but aren't able to connect to the internet you could try changing your proxy server. DNS Server: These convert a domain name (google.com) to an IP address (74.125.19.105). And will have to be set while creating a connection to the LAN. Our DNS servers are 144.16.192.1 and 144.16.192.55.

DHCP: This is a protocol that allows you to acquire you IP address and other necessary configuration to connect to the LAN. This means that you can just plug in your LAN cable and the network configurations are automatically done for you.

For all those who hail from the fast-moving crowds of tinsel towns, this little burg might just be the closest you'll ever get to the dusty, solitary roads of villages. Whenever the breakneck schedule of your fresher lives gives you break, don't just stick to the campus and the virtual respite it offers. The world o u t s i d e , h o w e v e r "ramshackled" it might look, has great many "natural" things to appreciate...

During the Second World War, the US Air Force set up few bases nearby. One of them is about 30 kms from the campus (called Garbeta) on the Raniganj Road. Not a soul in sight, your mobiles do not work and you feel cut off from the rest of civilization, you're completely on your own! It's easy to lose your way though, so take care!

I f y o u t a k e t h e PremBazaar road and travel around 7 kms, there comes an ex-mining retreat to your left (a bit after a large market area). Characteristic of its red soil, the crevasses of the undulating land fill up with

recapitulation of historic art.

Have a weekend to spare? Plan a trip to the golden Bay of Bengal beaches! Digha, Shankarpur and Mandarmani all lie within a 130 km radius and takes about two hours to reach by r o a d . W h i c h e v e r beach you choose, make sure you don't miss the breathtaking sunrise!

If distance isn't a problem, the famous tourist spot Ghatshila near Jamshedpur might be worth a visit. With its picturesque landscape of low hills and the glorious Subarnarekha river, this beautiful city deserves all the praise it gets!

On the Puri Gate side, the first left turn and another 7-8 kms would bring you to the Malancha Market. It's a good change to the hackneyed buzz of GolBazaar. If an air-conditioned mall is more your thing, try the all new Puja Mall. It's just 20 minutes by a rikshaw and boasts of outlets l i k e B i g B a z a a r a n d

crystal clear water during the rains.

Situated less than 50 km from the campus, Parimal Kanan on Chandrakona road is a beautiful park covering about 400 acres. Lakes for boating, toy train rides, bird sanctuary , special picnic spots, flower gardens - all contribute to a perfect trip.Go in a large group and you'll have the time of your life!

Another ideal picnic spot is Garchumuk in Howrah District. Located at the confluence of the Bhagirathi and Damodar rivers, this place is also called Atanna( bengali for fifty eight) Gate, since 58 lock gates have been placed here. Make sure to take a tranquil river trip on traditional row boats while you are there!

Barely 20 kms from campus, on the way to Midnapore along the river Kansabati, you come across a unique village with 19th century temples everywhere. Built by Nawab Alibardi Khan, it is an ideal romantic

Pantaloons.

If your calling is through your stomach and you're exasperated with the campus viands, try the Highway to

Calcutta. Great Indian Hotel, Garden Inn, Punjabi Dhaba , TamroLipto Park, and others introduce your taste-buds to something new.

Although this new world you guys are about to experience may seem the most antagonistic option to the technocratic cosmos you were geared up for, it will be worth the ride, if you make it so. Bored, jobless and frustrated with the rat race??

A rural India welcomes you in its abode of tranquility!!

Well, yeah, welcome aboard and hearty congratulations for passing the toughest exam in the world. If you believe in the Law of the Excluded Middle, you shouldn't disagree with the observation that the world can be divided into two broad categories of people - those who want to be an engineer and those who don't. Since you

have spent a large amount of precious time and brain cells in order to make sure that you reach these hallowed portals, it isn't very unreasonable to assume that you belong to the former, and if you do, here's some really useful advice that will guide you through your noble pursuit.

Start working only at the last moment

If you think you can still finish the work, this probably isn't the right time to start. We engineers believe that the time you enjoy wasting isn't wasted time and hence the corollary that most of the time you get should be wasted. Work is really just an impediment in the otherwise more natural and pleasurable order of things, completed with minimal time and resources.

Never disclose your birthday

The most uncomfortable situation for an engineer is to meet a

person on a day that happens to be his birthday. Weird, but true!

Their brain is wired that way. They just can't avoid the feeling of

extreme revulsion. They get so worked up at the mere existence of

such a person that they are immediately filled with a homicidal

temptation to kill him. The feeling is so prevalent among engineers

that a ritual has been designed especially for such occasions. Known

as GPL, it consists of lifting the accused in the air and damaging his

behind brutally with the help of anything that is capable of giving

you the willies. This requires four to five people; however the

number can go up without bounds depending on the number of

people eager to satisfy their sadistic desires. The result ranges from

an immediate death to serious chronic difficulties in doing normal

daily activities. In such circumstances, it is always wise not to share

your birthday with anyone. It might prove lethal.Your Hall is your identity

This might come to you as quite a shock. By "hall", one would generally mean that building you stay in - MMM Hall, for instance. However, the word has a much broader meaning attached to it. It is what is mentioned in bold fonts before your name in your résumé. It is what you must have printed on anything you wear. And if, you are asked to leave a message for the aliens to prove that we existed, the message must be the name of your hall, for, you will soon believe (or at least asked to) that it is THE most relevant information in your universe.

Girls aren’t for engineers

The qualities that make one an engineer are also the qualities that make one a woman repellant, and, in some extreme cases, a repellant in general. If you are a woman yourself, then the above doesn't necessarily apply to you. But in that case, you wouldn't really care, would you? So, to put it in a nutshell, there really isn't much point in trying to impress the fairer sex, because of the simple reason that you can’t.

Answers to all your questions : existent and imaginary!Q) I feel very out of place when people around me converse in rapid Bengali. I feel the urge to contribute to the conversation, but I just don't know how. What do I do?

A) The most important thing is to look like the fate of the e n t i r e w o r l d w i l l b e determined by the outcome of the conversation. Nod your head vigorously and open your eyes as wide as you possibly can. Keep interjecting with the occasional "hehn"* and the reassuring "bhaalo, bhaalo". That's all it takes, honestly.

Q) I often get lost in the Insti

activate the primal instincts lurking in your subconscious mind and instigate action, c a u s i n g t h e immediate removal of your person from the Institute to your Hall.c) Failing all else, cry out for help. You'll have to survive on dead rats till someone finds you. Chances are, however, that you won't find any, and they won't find you. Sorry buddy. C'est la vie!

Q) My LAN cord doesn't reach my laptop.

A) After careful analysis of the problem you seem to be facing, we have come up with these answers:

a) Move your laptop closer to the LAN port.b) Buy a longer LAN cord.

building. What do I do to ensure that I find my way out?

A) The Institute building is, indeed, a giant labyrinth. Let us assure you that you aren't the only one facing this problem. To get back on track, we suggest you take the following actions, in this order:

a) Girls have a good sense of direction. Ask a girl out. Unfortunately, chances are that you won't find any.b) Look for a toilet that's open. Chances are that when you find one, the stench will

Q) The heavens bless me with pigeon faeces regularly in Bhatnagar.. What do I do?

A) Relocate to Raman. It doesn't make a damned difference that your class ain't there.

Q) I can't get up for my early morning classes.

A) Look around, nobody can. When in KGP, do as the KGPians do.

* For a lesson in the art of pronouncing "hehn", walk up to a Bengali and tell him with brimming emotion that Ganguly is the best thing that ever happened to cricket. If you don't elicit a "hehn" from him, he's not Bengali.

Hey, where’s my ID?!

Your IIT Kharagpur Identification Card is your primary proof of existence within the campus walls. You will need it whether it’s for registration, entering an auditorium for watching a lecture by a Nobel Laureate, or even giving an exam.Your library card doesn’t cut it - losing your ID card may be a harrowing experience. Here’s what you need to do in such an event:?Go to any Police Station to lodge an FIR.?Take a copy of the FIR to the Academic Section.?Fill out a form duly attested by your Head of Department and the Dean of Academic Affairs.?Obtain a fine slip (same as the library fine slip) from SBI for Rs. 50/-?Submit said form and slip to the Academic Section with a stamp size photo.
