The inspector examining the plan highlighted serious concerns and has recommended suspension of up to six months or withdrawing it completely and re-submitting at a later date. Sandbach councillor Sam Corcoran said: “The Conservatives have let loose private developers, hoping that free enterprise will solve the housing shortage. “As a result, planning is currently out of control in Cheshire East. “The counter- balance is supposed to be a Local Plan saying where development should and should not take place. “Now the Inspector has said that there are ‘serious shortcomings’ in the Plan and unless it is revised he ‘would probably conclude that the submitted Plan is unsound’.” Cllr Corcoran said that every delay gives more time for developers to get speculative housing applications approved. Nantwich councillor Brian Silvester said the leader and deputy leader of Cheshire East Council should resign after the Planning Inspector has ‘torn the Local Plan to shreds’. He said: “CEC have had over five years to get the Local Plan right and they have totally failed. “The consequence of this is that developers have had free rein to do virtually what they want and residents have to sit and watch whilst their prescious green gaps and green belt is destroyed and concreted over.” The leader of the Independent group on the council Brendan Murphy has said the Local Plan is now ‘dead in the water’ and it is an ‘unforgiveable disgrace the council has got it so wrong’. Council leader Michael Jones has described the six month suspension of the Local Plan as ‘regrettable’ but said his focus would be on protecting open countryside and greenbelt from unplanned development. SOUTH Cheshire councillors have blasted the Cheshire East authority leadership following news that the Local Plan faces further long delays. by Stewart GreenA FILM crew arrived in Sandbach this month to capture one of the final scenes for the new movie Brass In The Blood. The film is set in Sandbach with a story based on the winning of the double championships by Fodens Band. Scenes at Sandbach School were filmed before a live audience as part of a concert with both the senior band and the Foden’s Youth Band on stage, with both bands recording music earlier in the day for the film soundtrack. This was not the band’s first appearance in a film as in the early pioneering days the band

featured regularly in promotion films for the company. And in 1935 they were asked by Universal Pictures to appear in a film called The Small Man about a small shop keeper who was being forced out of business by a larger company. Fodens were filmed at the Stoll Studios in London playing the William Tell Overture by Rossini, a tune that was also used in the film Brassed Off and was the finale to the concert in 2013. In August 1942 the Strand Film Co paid £40 to the band for them to play for something that was not written down in the band book and so this new film in 2014 will be an interesting addition to the band’s CV.

A 37-year old man has been arrested and charged with fraud by false representation. Linden Burt, of Crewe Road, Sandbach, will appear in court next month after being arrested following a police investigation. Inspector Christian Watkins, who led the investigation, said: “This is an excellent example of police and partners working together to tackle the issue of fraud. “It is important to remember that fraud can take a wide range of platforms and the best way to protect yourself is to understand the tactics used by fraudsters. “Our website is packed with information about how fraudsters operate and how you can stay safe from this crime.” Burt was granted bail and will appear at South Cheshire Magistrates Court on Monday December 1. His arrest was part of a week of positive fraud action carried out across the force.

Chief Inspector Giles Pierce, said: “The message we are sending out is that fraud in Cheshire will not be tolerated and if you commit such crimes, we will find you and bring you to justice. “We work closely with partner agencies and have access to information to protect people against this crime. “As a force we have dedicated officers in place which tackle this issue and this week is a development in the on-going work done by Cheshire Police to raise awareness of fraud. “Fraud is a crime that stretches across a wide range of platforms, from bogus tradesmen and counterfeit goods to the more complex practices of online, cyber-fraud. “In today′s digital age the tactics being used by fraudsters are becoming more advanced and it is now more vital than ever to be aware of such tactics and protect ourselves.”

by Stewart GreenCIVIC dignitaries and two brass bands led the tributes at the Remembrance Day ceremony in Sandbach. Roberts Bakery Band led the procession from Westfields while the Lions Youth Band played to the thousands of people who turned out to pay tribute to the fallen of both world wars. This year was the 100th anniversary of the start of the First Great War and many of the people who were there wore the medals of relatives who had fought in the conflict. In the square Reg Dunning gave readings as part of the

outdoor service before a member of the Roberts Bakery band played the last post just before the two minutes silence. Marjorie Newton, chairman of the Sandbach Branch of the Royal British Legion, Mayor Elsie Alcock and others laid wreaths at the foot of the War Memorial. Representatives from Sandbach Boys and Girls Schools, the Fire Cadets, Army Cadets, Air Cadets and others also laid tributes before moving off for a service at St Mary’s. The people of Sandbach then also laid their own tributes with many bringing crosses to plant next to the memorial.

A SANDBACH woman who forged rent forms in order to cheat the benefits system has received fines and costs of more than £470 and a suspended prison sentence. For more than a year, Natasha Barnard, 30, used the fraudulent forms to claim money she was not entitled to. Barnard, of Latham Road, admitted one charge of making a false representation to obtain housing benefit when she appeared before South and East Cheshire Magistrate’s Court in Crewe on November 11. Magistrates heard that she first claimed in May 2012 while living at an address in Bridle Road, Crewe, providing a confirmation of rent form completed by her landlord showing the amount she was paying. Housing Benefit was paid to Barnard for this property until June 2013. She then told the council that she had moved to Broughton Road, Crewe where she

submitted a new claim and provided another confirmation of rent form for that address. An investigation by officers from Cheshire East Council’s Benefit Fraud Investigation Team found that Barnard’s forgeries continued for more than 12 months. Barnard will have to repay state benefits of £3,667.37 that she received but was not entitled to. Magistrates sentenced her to 12 weeks imprisonment suspended for 12 months, together with 200 hours of community punishment. Barnard will also have to pay £367 costs, a victim surcharge of £80 and a fine of £15 for breaching a previous sentence. Councillor Peter Raynes said: “This case shows that cheating the system leaves perpetrators much worse off. “We proactively investigate cases like this to prevent fraudsters taking money away from those really need help.”

by Stewart GreenA MODEL steam engine with links to the town’s heritage has been installed in Sandbach Library. Technically a replica of a Foden Steam Lorry/Tractor built in about 1925, the working model has been put on permanent display in the town after many years of discussions with both Sandbach Town Council and Cheshire East. Built by Alan Braddock of Dobcross near Oldham, it took him from 1983 to 1998 to build the replica. Originally on show in his home it was decided by the family

that it should have a more permanent place where it could be appreciated. David Braddock the son of the model maker, installed the engine in the library in time for a Foden Exhibition to launch a Foden Pack dedicated to the history of the Foden Works by Cheshire Archives, which will be distributing the boxes to libraries and schools in the area. Special thanks were expressed to Cllr John Hammond and Cllr Barry Moran of Cheshire East Council for organising the display within Sandbach as a fitting tribute to the workers and history of Fodens Motor Works.

SOME 30 boys from Year 9 at Sandbach School have been on a residential geography trip

to Machynlleth in Wales. They visited the Centre for Alternative Technology for an

eco-weekend learning about sustainability and renewable energy.

CHESHIRE Police are appealing for information following a burglary in Ettiley Heath in Sandbach. The incident happened some time between 2am and 3am on Friday, November 7 at a house on Southley Close. The offenders gained entry through the unlocked front door. A Cheshire Police spokesman said: “They made a thorough search of the downstairs rooms, until they found car keys to an Audi car on the kitchen worktop. “Before leaving, they took two laptops from the living room and drove the car from the driveway using the stolen key.” Anyone who has information is urged to contact PC Rob Burgess on 101, quoting incident 106 of November 7, 2014

SANDBACH MP Fiona Bruce has visited the newly refurbished Brethren Church in Wheelock. The Plymouth Brethren Christian Church recently held a community open day offering lunch to local residents to celebrate the opening of their new church at Wheelock and their recently renovated church building. Having purchased the land and building in 2012 the PBCC members have themselves restored renovated and converted the building, taking over six months to make it a suitable place of worship. Talks were held with the planning committee, conservation officer and local community to come up with a suitable scheme, which preserves the historic value of the more than hundred-

year-old building in its natural surroundings. The exterior of the building has been left intact but the interior substantially converted into a modern, airy meeting room. Nelson Hutchins, of the PBCC, commented: “It was a brilliant project to be part of with deadlines to meet which really helped the motivation and drive to get it done on time.” With the work now finished the PBCC opened the site to the public for the first time since completion and among those present at the open lunch was MP Fiona Bruce. She stated: “The lunch was delicious, and the most interesting part of the day was the company – a mixture of members of the Brethren congregation and people from the local community.”

THE Fourth Fodens Band Solo, Duet and Quartet Competition, proved another success according to the many performers from across Europe who attended the event at Sandbach School. Judges Glenn Van Looy, from Belgium, Anthony Galinier, from France, and Glyn Williams, of Fodens Band, listened to some 142 performances through the day before deciding on the eventual winners. The event also featured a display of the history of Fodens Band and the pre-launch of Urban Play a new intelligent app for musicians to play along to. Among the awards was the Most Promising Local Player which this year went to Alex Flanders. Overall Best Performance went to European quartet EQ who won the Open Quartet Competition with an impressive performance of Equinox.

YOUNG Sandbach dancers have been raising money for Children In Need. A total of 101 tappers, aged from five to 83, tap-danced in sequence to the hit ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams to raise funds for the charity. The dancers, all students from three local dance schools, came together at the Guy Harvey Centre in Nantwich, as part of a nationwide tapathon, to perform the routine in aid of Pudsey’s appeal. Lesley Cummings of Sandbach-based Feet First Dance said: “We are thrilled to have raised nearly £1,000 for such a worthy cause. This has become an annual event for us and we are already looking forward to tap dancing again for Pudsey next year.” Anyone interested in joining Feet First should call Lesley on 01270 764548.

SANDBACH RUFC are eyeing up a strong finish to the year after giving league leaders South Leicester a real scare in a hard fought game at Bradwall Road. Currently sitting fourth in the National League 3 Midlands division, Sandbach acquitted themselves well but lost 26 - 32 in the end to the unbeaten

leaders. The club’s Stuart Battersby said: “They showed a large crowd why they are as yet unbeaten this season. “There’s no doubt that South are a good well drilled team who play rugby as it should be played, but the main difference between the two

sides was size. “The South forwards, especially numbers were all significantly bigger than their opposite numbers. “As a consequence when push came to shove Sandbach came off second best.” But the close fought fixture bodes well for the much

improved Sandbach outfit and they will be looking to progess further with three very winnable games in December. The First XV face Bromsgrove at home on December 6, then bottom of the league Burton away on December 13, followed by Hinckley at home on December 20.
