What is the Sarphati Cohort?
Within the Sarphati Cohort research is conducted into the growth and development of Amsterdam children. All children living in Amsterdam that receive services from Youth Health Care (YHC) are eligible for inclusion in the Sarphati Cohort. During the consultations with the Parent and Child Teams (OKT) or at the child health centre, YHC (GGD Amsterdam or SAG) collects data about the health and development of children until they are 18 years old. YHC uses this information to provide care, but this data is also valuable for research. In order to use these data to conduct scientific research, we request explicit parental consent to use some data anonymously for the Sarphati Cohort. In addition participants receive research questionnaires. Moreover some participants will be invited for additional research, so called sub-cohorts.
Face to face approach
We also use a face to face approach to reach parents. The OKT assistants play an important role by inviting parents with a 4 or 8 weeks old baby to join the Sarphati Cohort. To support the OKT assistants with this new task the Sarphati Team visited two to three Parent and Child teams (October ‘18 – September ‘19) and SAG locations (November ‘19 – March ’20) on a daily basis for a month. In the waiting rooms of these locations the Sarphati Team also invited parents with children between the age of 0 to 4 years to take part in the Sarphati Cohort. Prior to the start at each location, parents received an invitation letter and Information Leaflet. After one month a reminder was sent.
