The Samish ShoreLines Published by the Samish Island Community Center September 2021 PO Box 268, Bow 98232 www.samishisland.net President’s message I hope you have all had a good summer. We were so looking forward to having our first gathering at the center in over a year and a half at our annual September potluck, but this Delta variant has put us back on hold for our normal activities, so NO POTLUCK. We will keep our fingers crossed that we will be able to have our normal Christmas activities. For now, we are still taking reservations for hall rentals if the renter and their invitees can follow all state and federal COVID restrictions/guidelines. We do reserve the right to cancel all reservations and return fees paid if the state guidelines mandate or if we believe necessary for everyone’s safety. The tsunami-warning signal in front of the hall should be ready for its first test on the 4 th of October, which I understand will be the chimes that will be the normal test sound on the first Monday of each month at noon. There will be another test during the Great Washington Shake Out event on October 21 st , which will be the official tsunami warning siren sound. Now that it is getting dark earlier, please keep this in mind when out walking and make sure you are wearing a safety vest or at least bright colors to make yourself more visible. We know the roads are narrow and sometimes it is impossible to see walkers because of the sun’s position, so please be careful. Linda Strobel Fire Chief’s Corner: Due to our region’s extended dry spell Skagit County has a complete Burn Ban even though we may have had a few damp days. I continue to receive calls with concerns about fires especially from cabins near beach areas. Fires are a risk to all residents because embers can travel and start brush fires in our very dry vegetation. To learn more about how to protect your home from wild land fire, search for www.dnr.wa.gov/firewise. For any questions about open burning in Skagit County please contact the Skagit County Fire Marshal’s Office at 360- 416-1840, or our website at skagitcounty.net/fire marshal Mike Collins Skagit County’s Farm Stand resource: A great source for finding your favorite farm stand is the Genuine Skagit Valley program ‘Farmstand Fresh’ that features stands all over Skagit County, most are open all fall, some until December! The website features descriptions of our local stands and farm families. A map is provided to allow a fun drive around the beautiful county farms. https://genuineskagitvalley.com/farmstand-fresh/ Edgewater Garden Club will begin its program year on Thursday, September 23 with its first in-person meeting in 18 months! (Covid-guidelines permitting). Masks will be required. We gather at 10 am for conversation, coffee and tea will be offered and the meeting begins at 10:30; we will share our pandemic gardening stories. New members are always welcome. Send $15/household dues to Jo Harke at 11561 Blue Heron Rd. All are welcome! Samish Island Acres Community Garden: has already delivered over 2000 pounds to the Food Distribution Center. Thanks to neighbors, the Monroes, Weduls, and Linda Strachen, who donated produce to this effort. We continue to harvest at 10 a.m. on Mondays (exception is Tuesday, Sept 7 th ) Please bring any fruits/vegetables to the garden at the end of Blue Heron Road by 11 am on days we harvest. Questions: contact Linda, [email protected] THANKS EVERYONE! Padilla Bay Interpretive Center has been open to the public since August 5th and it's going great! Our new hours are Wed. through Sat. 10am – 4pm. There are new protocols in place to keep volunteers, staff, and the public safe. Masks are required for everyone in the interpretive center ages 2 years and older. We now have a quick, three question health screening we ask each visitor as they enter the building. We are limiting the capacity of each room of the interpretive center to 15 people to help with social distancing. And we have brand new touch tank aquariums that must have someone present in order to help visitors enjoy the critters hands on!
