•Child and Dependent CareCredit—The maximum amount ofchild and dependent care expenseseligible for the credit is now $3,000if you have one child or $6,000 ifyou have two or more children.These increased amounts arepermanent.•Child Tax Credit—The

credit has been made permanentat $1,000 per child under the ageof 17 at the end of 2013. Thiscredit may be claimed in additionto the Child and Dependent CareCredit.•Tuition and fees deduc-

tion—If you, your spouse or yourdependent is enrolled in a postsec-ondary institution, you may beable to deduct tuition expenses asan adjustment to income, even ifyou don’t itemize deductions. Yougenerally take this deduction ifyou don’t qualify for an educationcredit or other tax break for thesame expenses.•American Opportunity Tax

gram’s sponsor—the U.S. ArmyEducational Outreach Program(AEOP). The primary vehicle foraccomplishing this objective withmiddle-school students is the eCY-BERMISSION program.The program, which is admin-

istrated by the National ScienceTeachers Association (NSTA), isan online learning competitiondesigned to promote self-discoveryand help students recognize real-life applications of STEM.Teams from all over the coun-

try propose solutions to real prob-lems in their communities usingthe scientific method or the engi-neering design process and com-pete for state, regional andnational awards.Each team comprises three or

four students plus one adult teamadviser. Students must be U.S.citizens or legal U.S. residentsand must be officially enrolled ata U.S.-based public, private orhome school, or at a Departmentof Defense Education Activity(DoDEA) school abroad.Students can win on a state,

regional and national level, withnational winning teams receivingup to $8,000 in U.S. SavingsBonds, valued at maturity. Theregistration deadline for the com-petition is Wednesday, January15, 2014.
