TransTox, a company developed to engineer a new, safe approach to the way hazardous materials are handled. As the result of nearly three decades in the hazardous material industry, TransTox was brought to fruition by those who wanted a better, safer way to dispose of dangerous materials like asbestos. We created a safer, easier and cheaper method of containing and transporting asbestos than is currently available, and we want to share it with you.

We are safety experts – TransTox’s range of flexible liners and bags seek to overcome the WHS/OH&S issues eliminating the potential danger and associated health risks.

“We can say with confidence that if you’re not using TransTox, you’re not containing hazardous waste in the safest way.”

TransTox is a simple, yet effective solution to a genuine issue encountered by the community and will alleviate the impact it has on our environment.

Transtox’s MissionTransTox, a company developed to engineer a new, safe approach to the way hazardous materials are handled.

Our business has had twenty-five years experience working in the building and construction industry, with a catalogue of work ranging throughout demolition, site remediation and waste recycling projects.

We have witnessed first hand dangerous materials, such as asbestos, and the importance for a safe approach to manage it on site, and supplying a transport system.

As a result of the background of our work, these hazardous materials have familiarity. We have learnt the importance of safe work procedures of asbestos waste that is contained, stored and transported between site and disposal facilities.

We have observed, throughout the years, that there is a definite disadvantage with current practices when containing and disposing of asbestos. Plastic sheeting cannot safely line vehicles, or guarantee safe concealment. Tipping at landfill then incurs the problem of damaging the packaging. Therefore not having a process to manage waste asbestos safely.

TransTox products are the most valuable assets to any business, eliminating many of the vast methodological problems that arise during hazardous material removal and disposal.

We believe that creative new inspirations should be utilized upon all levels of scale from the individual to government bodies, to implement ‘change’, with benefits to the human individual and avoiding environmental degradation at future sites.

KEY BENEFITS

ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITSTransTox understands the community concern with safe hazardous material removal and the environment, and has designed an environmentally inspired bag system, that we believe is the future solution for managing problem waste asbestos.

The TransTox bag is referred to as an “eco-innovation” or innovative product with processes that reduce environmental impacts. TransTox and other leaders in many industries have been developing new technologies in order to work towards sustainability. However, these are not always enforced by policy and legislation.

Our design process included multiple generated computer models and various live testing through our sister waste company. These processes ensured a successful tick list for product safety whilst undergoing laboratory specific testing and analysis of product materials. Our main outcome was for the overall environmental impact at end of life of our products to ensure permanent encapsulation of waste asbestos buried in landfills.

We believe that creative new inspirations should be utilized upon all levels of scale from the individual to government bodies, to implement ‘change’, with benefits to the human individual and avoiding environmental degradation at future sites.

TransTox is continually striving for new and innovative methods to help change the future of the current waste industry’s prosperity for a more environmentally friendly one. The overall impact of manufacturing our products from recycled fabrics to minimize the use of resources may be minimal, but every small step helps to reduce the impact we all have on the environment.

TransTox is a simple, yet effective solution to a genuine issue encountered by all involved in this industry and will alleviate the ramifications it has on sustainability and reduce environmental impacts.

KEY BENEFITS

SAFETY BENEFITSTransTox: A Better Kind of Safety

Hazardous materials, such as asbestos, present significant safety dangers and challenges on a day-to-day basis. Waste asbestos must be carefully contained and sealed from the external environment. At TransTox we have designed a product that eliminates many of the challenges associated with safe, easy removal.

Workplaces, packaging waste asbestos must comply with the Work Health and Safety Regulations 2011 and should follow the guidelines “How to safely remove asbestos” or discuss with SafeWork Australia.

TransTox bags are easy to set up and waste asbestos can be completely encapsulated at any stage during the loading process. Each bag contains an internal 200um polythene plastic bladder; inside an outer heavy-duty sealable zip top bag, which allows multi stage filling of the bag hourly, daily or weekly for convenience. Moving the completed Transtox bag is by the means of a series of two (2) certified lifting slings, multi stage filling of the bag hourly, daily or weekly for convenience. This system of removal eliminates the danger of the bag being damaged and exposure to your health and the safety of others.

Current methods of bundling and wrapping asbestos with builder’s plastic, requiring that bundles are double-wrapped, present significant safety issues. Wrapped bundles of waste asbestos are not manageable and held together with ducting tape. In most cases the tape comes away from the plastic in hot and cold weather conditions, exposing this waste and the associated hazards.

TransTox products are the most valuable assets to any business, eliminating many of the vast methodological problems that arise during hazardous material removal.

TransTox is a simple, yet effective solution to a genuine issue encountered by all involved in this industry and will alleviate the impact it has on our health and wellbeing in the workplace environment.

KEY BENEFITS (continued)

COST BENEFITSHazardous materials, such as asbestos, present significant dangers and challenges on a day-to-day basis, as this waste must be carefully contained and sealed from the external environment. At TransTox we have designed a product that eliminates this problem.

For the majority of TransTox customers that are not a government body, the most valued question we expect to be asked is about the cost of our product.

The cost of our bags is passed onto the client you are contracted to – however, the cost paid for our bags is significantly less than the costs associated with current handling practices of asbestos waste, resulting in greater profit margins for your business.

The brilliance of using our bags is the COST SAVINGS you will achieve due to overall convenience and ease of use. This is repeated down the line through all persons involved right up to, and including disposal.

TransTox bag systems require less labour due to quick installation and simple no fuss loading. Current methods of bundling and wrapping asbestos when calculated is very labour intensive, requiring that bundles be double wrapped, and in packs no greater than 500mm in height or less than 20kg parcels for appropriate manual handling conditions.

TransTox products are the most valuable labour saving asset to any business – we have worked alongside various industries throughout our history and have witnessed first-hand the vast methodological problems that can arise on different job sites.

TransTox is a simple, yet effective solution to a genuine issue encountered by all involved in this industry and will alleviate labour expense and Work Health and safety issues experienced with current practices.

FEASIBILITYThe Table below compares the costs you incur using current methods of packaging asbestos, to the costs you will incur using a Transtox Asbestos Bag:

Current Method (2 x 500mm height Packs ) AUD

Roll of Polythene 200um $100.00

2 x Roll of PVC Duct tape $9.63

2 x Tradesman wage for one hour minimum $90.00

Tradesman Superannuation 9.5% $8.56

Workers compensation insurance on labour (8.893%) $8.76

Excluding GST $216.95

Including GST $238.65

Note: The above table estimates that it only takes one hour to bundle, and wrap the asbestos, depending on the efficiency of the tradesmen, and the nature of the task, it would generally take longer than an hour, increasing the cost savings of using a TransTox bag. In this feasibility, 2 x bundles would be equivalent to a 4 cubic skip liner bag or 1.5 Super 6-2500mm roof bags. (All current pricing can be found on the website)

HOW THEY WORKTransTox has brought their innovation in hazardous waste disposal to the Australian market. How can their products help you? Before you start hazardous material removal, please familiarise yourself with the following regulatory information:

General GuidelinesAsbestos, in particular friable asbestos products, poses health risks during removal, transport and disposal. It is therefore extremely important that asbestos be handled appropriately during these operations.

Under the Environment Protection (Industrial Waste Resource) Regulations 2009, the disposal of waste asbestos, whether of industrial or domestic origin, is controlled by EPA. In addition, EPA controls the transportation of asbestos of industrial (including commercial or trade) origin.

Under the Regulations, asbestos from industrial origins (including commercial or trade activities) is a prescribed industrial waste (PIW) and when packaged in accordance with this guideline is a Category C waste. Workplaces, packaging waste asbestos must comply with the Work Health and Safety Regulations 2011 and should follow the guidelines “How to safely remove asbestos” or discuss with SafeWork Australia.

TYPES AND USES OF ASBESTOSThe three main types are white, blue and brown. Before 1980, they were mainly used in the construction industry for the production of asbestos cement sheeting, piping, roof shingles and felt, base flashing, ceiling tiles, asphalt and vinyl floor tiles are some to mention.

Asbestos was also used in the manufacture of insulation material and white asbestos was used in the automotive industry to make brake linings and disc pads.

HOW THEY WORK (continued)

PACKAGINGWorkplaces, packaging waste asbestos must comply with the Work Health and Safety Regulations 2011 and should follow the guidelines “How to safely remove asbestos” or discuss with SafeWork Australia. For non-workplaces, where such instructions are not available, the following guidelines, based on the Code of Practice, should be observed:

• Asbestos cement sheeting (AC sheeting) and asbestos cement pipes

• Insulated lagged pipes, boilers, heaters and equipment

• Thoroughly wet the articles and maintain in a wet condition until packaged for transport.

• Minimise cutting or breaking of articles to be packed.

• On opening the bag, you will find there is an outer woven polypropylene (PP) bag with a zip top lid and an inner 200 micron plastic polyethylene (PE) bladder for concealment of asbestos.

• For packaging, place articles carefully inside the TransTox flexible inner bladder bag and completely wrap the articles and seal with adhesive tape.

• When full lock the zipper bag and secure the zipper with a cable-tie.

• Asbestos dust and friable asbestos

• Discharge dust directly into double polythene bags approximately 200 μm (0.2mm) thick. A maximum bag size of 1200 mm (length) x 900 mm (width) should be used. The bagged dust should be wetted before the bags are tied and the loaded weight should not exceed 25 kg. Bags should be filled to not more than 50 per cent capacity.

• Tie each bag.

• Label each bag with a dangerous goods label or place directly and place into the TransTox container bag for secure concealment and transportation.

HOW THEY WORK (continued)

TRANSPORTEPA controls the transportation of asbestos from industrial activities. The transportation of domestic sourced asbestos, unless it is removed by a licensed asbestos removalist, does not fall within EPA’s statutory responsibilities.

A householder may transport less than 100kgs of their own asbestos to a licensed landfill for disposal without transport certificates or a permitted vehicle. It is recommended, however, that the practice for handling and packaging asbestos be applied to domestic activities.

When a commercial contractor (i.e., a licensed asbestos removalist) undertakes the removal of the asbestos from a domestic source, transport certificates and a permitted vehicle is required. Waste Locate tracking is now a requirement in NSW..

Owners of vehicles that transport industrial or commercially sourced waste asbestos must hold an EPA waste transport permit / QR code. The permit stipulates the necessary controls for the safe handling, transport and disposal of waste asbestos.

TransTox bags must be protected and remain intact during transport and unloading. Any packaging that is damaged must be replaced or repaired prior to disposal. Vehicles should be carefully cleaned after transporting damaged exposed waste asbestos.

The waste producer must provide a waste or waste locate QR barcode. The waste transporter and the waste receiver must complete the appropriate sections of the certificate in accordance with the State Regulations. Refer to the IWRG Waste Transport Certificate for detailed instructions on how to complete and distribute these certificates.

DISPOSALDisposal must only be at a site licensed by EPA to accept waste asbestos. Licence conditions require waste asbestos to be handled and covered in such a manner that no dust is generated. It is preferable that a dedicated area of a landfill be used for asbestos disposal and that this area be clearly designated on site maps.Asbestos can have serious health implications if inappropriately handled. In order to protect the health and safety of staff and contractors, the following guidelines be followed: 1. All asbestos loads must be booked in 24 hours before delivery. 2. Asbestos must be wrapped in two layers of plastic with a thickness of at least 0.2mm (builder’s plastic) or preferably supplied in a Transtox asbestos bag.3. Large loads must be wrapped in manageable bundles. The height of each bundle must not exceed 0.5m or preferably supplied in a TransTox asbestos bag.Unless supplied in a Transtox asbestos bag, each load of asbestos will be inspected before disposal. If the load does not meet these presentation guidelines, staff are required to reject it.
