Gospel John 13: 1-15
The sign of perfect love – service to God’s people.
Homily
The Washing of Feet plainchant, mode VI
Congregavit nos in unum Christi amor. The love of Christ has brought us together as one,Exultemus et in ipso jucundemur. let us exult and be joyful in him.Timeamus et amemus Deum vivum. Let us fear and love the living God,Et ex corde diligamus nos sincero. and let us love from a sincere heart. Simul ergo cum in unum congregamur: Therefore, when we come together as oneNe nos mente dividamur, caveamus. let us be on guard lest we be divided in mind. Cessent jurgia maligna, cessent lites. Let unkind quarrels and disputes cease,Et in medio nostri sit Christus Deus. let Christ, let God, be in our midst.Simul quoque cum beatis videamus. And when we, with the blessed, Glorianter vultum tuum, Christe Deus. gloriously behold your face, O Christ, O God.Gaudium quod est immensum, atque probum: There will be immense and righteous joySaecula per infinita saeculorum. Amen. throughout infinite ages. Amen.

As the Holy Oils are received the congregation acclaims:

Waddell, O.C.S.O.
Remember what I the Lord have done for you, That in this sacrament of service so should you do for each other.
And while they ate an evening meal Jesus arose from the table, And he wiped away the grime of his disciples’ feet.
He tended to their simplest need knelt down as if he were servant.And he bound up all the woundings of their journeyed feet.
He tied a towel ‘round his waist cleansing their cares with his garment,
And with living water poured, he washed away their woes.
So as we eat this evening meal, who will arise from the table? Who will wipe away the grime of our companions’ feet?

Communion Anthem Stopford
Jesu, lover of my soul, let me to thy bosom fly,While the nearer waters roll, while the tempest still is high;Hide me, O my Savior, hide, ‘till the storm of life be past;
Safe into the haven guide, O receive my soul at last!
Other refuge have I none; hangs my helpless soul on thee;Leave, ah! leave me not alone, still support and comfort me.All my trust in thee is stayed, all my help from thee I bring;
Cover my defenseless head with the shadow of thy wing.
Thou, O Christ, art all I want; more than all in thee I find.Raise the fallen, cheer the faint, heal the sick, and lead the blind.
Just and holy is thy name; I am all unrighteousness.False and full of sin I am; thou art full of truth and grace.
Plenteous grace on thee is found, grace to cover all my sin.
Let the healing streams abound; make and keep me pure within.Thou of life the fountain art; freely let me take of thee.
Spring thou up within my heart. Rise to all eternity. Amen.

Office of Tenebrae
The Lord Jesus loves us and gave up his life for us. Few of us will be called to die the way he died. Yet all of us must lay down our lives with him and for him. If we would be faithful to the gospel we must take up our cross daily and follow him.

office of teneBræ
Tenebrae is the Latin for "darkness." This service, originally the combined offices of Matins and Lauds on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday, takes its name from the responsory, Tenebrae factæ sunt, “darkness was wrought.”
Lamentations is a small psalter of communal laments over Jerusalem, following its destruction by the Babylonians in 587 BC. The first four chapters are alphabetic acrostics (with a stanza for each of the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet), and the fifth has the same number of verses as the alphabet. Each time the cantor sings the various strophes of the lamentations, the choir first sings a brief chant-like setting of a letter of the Hebrew alphabet in keeping with the structure of the book.
The gradual extinction of all lights in the Basilica symbolizes the temporary triumph of the prince of darkness over the Light of the World, and the loud noise, or strepitus, at the conclusion of the service suggests the earthquake described in the Passion narratives.
The single candle left burning is the symbol and promise of Christ's triumph over death and darkness.
Nos autem gloriari oportet We must glory in cruce Domini nostri Jesu Christi in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ: in quo est salus, vita because there is our salvation, our life et resurrectio nostra: and our resurrection: per quem salvati through it we are saved et liberati sumus. and set free. Deus, misereatur nostri, O God, be gracious to us et benedicat nobis: and bless us: illuminet vultum suum super nos, and let your face shed its light upon us, et misereatur nostri. and be gracious to us. Ut cognoscamus in terra viam tuam So will your ways be known upon earth in omnibus gentibus salutare tuum. and all nations learn your saving help.

Lamentations 1: 1-5
Here begins the Lamentations of the Prophet Jeremiah.Aleph. How lonely she is now, the once crowded city!
Widowed is she who was mistress over nations; the princess among the provinces has been made a toiling slave.
Beth. Bitterly she weeps at night, tears upon her cheeks, with not one to console her of all her dear ones;
her friends have all betrayed her and become her enemies. Ghimel. Judah has fled into exile from oppression and cruel slavery;
yet where she lives among the nations she finds no place to rest: all her persecutors come upon her where she is narrowly confined.
Daleth. The roads to Sion mourn for lack of pilgrims going to her feasts; all her gateways are deserted, her priests groan,
and her virgins sigh; she is in bitter grief.He. Her foes are uppermost, her enemies are at ease;
the Lord has punished her for her many sins. Her little ones have gone away, captive before the foe. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, return to the Lord, your God.

Lamentations 1: 10-14
Jod. The foe stretched out his hand to all her treasures; she has seen those nations enter her sanctuary
whom you forbade to come into your assembly.Caph. All her people groan, searching for bread;
they give their treasures for food, to retain the breath of life. Look, O Lord, and see how worthless I have become!
Lamed. Come, all you who pass by the way, look and see whether there is any suffering like my suffering,
which has been dealt me when the Lord afflicted me on the day of his blazing wrath.
Mem. From on high he sent fire down into my very frame; he spread a net for my feet, and overthrew me.
He left me desolate, in pain all the day.Nun. He has kept watch over my sins;
by his hand they have been plaited; they have settled about my neck;
He has brought my strength to its knees; the Lord has delivered me into their grip.
I am unable to rise.Jerusalem, Jerusalem, return to the Lord, your God.

Aleph. I am one who knows affliction from the rod of his anger.Aleph. One whom he has led and forced to walk in darkness, not in the light.Aleph. Against me alone he brings back his hand again and again all the day.
Beth. He has worn away my flesh and my skin, he has broken my bones.Beth. He has beset me round about with poverty and weariness.Beth. He has left me to dwell in the dark like those long dead.
Ghimel. He has hemmed me in with no escape and weighed me down with chains.Ghimel. Even when I cry out for help, he stops my prayer.
Ghimel. He has blocked my ways with fitted stones, and turned my paths aside.Jerusalem, Jerusalem, return to the Lord, your God.

Concluding Prayer
The one remaining candle is borne down the center aisle. Only after the candle has completely disappeared into the foyer of the Basilica is the “strepitus,” or sustained noise, to begin. Once the candle reemerges into the Basilica, the noise ceases. The ministers, followed by the assembly, then depart in silence.
Let the paschal fast be kept sacred. Let it be observed everywhere on Good Friday and, where possible, prolonged through Holy Saturday, as a way of coming to the joys of the Sunday of the Resurrection uplifted and with a welcoming heart. (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 110)

For forty years I led you safely through the I bore you up with manna in the desert, desert. I fed you with manna from heaven, but you struck me down and scourged me.and brought you to a land of plenty: I gave you saving water from the rock, but you led your Savior to the cross. but you gave me gall and vinegar to drink.
Holy is God! Holy and strong! I gave you a royal scepter, Holy immortal One, have mercy on us. but you gave me a crown of thorns.
What more could I have done for you? I raised you to the height of majesty, I planted you as my fairest vine, but you raised me high on a cross.but you yielded only bitterness:When I was thirsty you gave me vinegar to drink, and you pierced your Savior’s side with a lance.

The Easter Vigil in the Holy NightO truly blessed night, worthy alone to know the time and hourwhen Christ rose from the underworld!The sanctifying power of this night dispels wickedness, washes faults away, restores innocence to the fallen, and joy to mourners.

the easter vigil in the holy night
In accord with ancient tradition, this night is one of vigil (Exodus 12: 42). We enter it as servants awaiting the Master’s return so that when he comes,
he will find us wide awake and seat us at his table.
the solemn Beginning of the vigil or lUcernariUm
The Blessing of the Fire and Preparation of the Candle
All the meanings of light at Christmas and Epiphany are gathered here and given new force. The light of Christ has not only descended to our darkness but has descended into the
far deeper darkness of death to lead us into the light of eternal life.
Procession and Sharing of Light
(Light of Christ.) (Thanks be to God.)
The Easter Proclamation
All creation is called to rejoice. Every Christian heart is lifted in praise to God, for Jesus Christ our King is risen.

Anthem Sowerby
This is the Spirit’s entry now: the water and the Word,The cross of Jesus on your brow, the seal both felt and heard.
This miracle of life reborn comes from the Lord of breath;The perfect man from life was torn; our life comes through his death.
Let water be the sacred sign that we must die each day To rise again by his design as followers of his way.
Renewing Spirit, hear our praise for your baptismal powerThat washes us through all his days. Cleanse us again this hour.
Assembly’s Renewal of Baptismal Promises
This is a moment of renewed commitment. Death to sin and life in God are sealed anew in faith and life-giving water.
