Isaiah 63:16-17; 64:1. 3-8 Each Advent Sunday begins with a reading
from Isaiah, for Isaiah is the great prophet of the Messiah. This reading is
taken from the latest part of the Book of Isaiah. After the return to Jerusa-
lem from exile in Babylon, the Jews were passionately awaiting the com-
ing of the Messiah. They were conscious that they had sinned and de-
served their punishment, but still longed for the liberation from foreign
interference which the Messiah would bring. After the coming of Christ
we too are waiting, waiting for the fulfilment of the sovereignty or king-
ship of God. Jesus brought the pledge of this kingship by his miracles of
healing, his welcome to sinners, his teaching about the Kingdom, and
above all by his Resurrection from the dead. We no longer have any rea-
son to fear death, but we are conscious of our own failings, of our co-
operation with evil and long for the strength and fidelity which whole-
hearted membership of God’s Kingdom would bring us.
Corinthians 1:3-9 This reading from the opening of Paul’s first Letter to
the Corinthians is full of the excitement of the Spirit. The young commu-
nity of Christians at Corinth flourished in the activity of the Holy Spirit,
not just by extraordinary things like speaking in tongues, but by healing
and teaching and guidance. Even being a good member of a family
(husband, wife, parent, child) is an activity guided by the Spirit. All this
is preparing for the final coming of Christ, for all Christian activity, no
matter how humdrum, is given life and vitality by the Spirit of Christ. In
Paul’s day there was a freshness and enthusiasm which is sometimes lack-
ing in our Church today. Let us ask at Christmas for a new infusion of the
Spirit which will help us to burst the bonds which keep us back from full
service to the Lord.
St Mark 13:33-37 This brief parable of the master returning unexpected-
ly is typical of Jesus’ vivid way of speaking. The message is typical, too,
because Jesus was constantly stressing that there is no time to lose. When
he came in his earthly ministry he again and again challenged his hearers
to make up their minds NOW, to change their ways NOW. He challenges
us to do the same. We can hear the rattle of the returning Master’s key in
the lock. There is no time to hide the contraband, to pull our uniforms
straight before greeting the Master at his entry. Even if we do not think
that the world’s end is imminent, even if death is not threatening, every
moment counts, every decision is for or against Jesus. Saints are rumoured
to have said that, if they received the news that they were to die that night,
they would carry on doing what they were doing anyway. Saints can do
this, because they are ready for the coming of the Lord. But what about
us? If we need to put things a bit more in order to prepare for the Lord’s
coming, is there any valid reason to delay? The four weeks of Advent are
a good time to clean things up for the Lord’s coming.
ADVENT The new liturgical year is inaugurated this weekend
as we enter the season of Advent. The Lectionary readings
this year will feature the Gospel of St Mark (Year B) Our
weekly liturgical calendar here at OLEM provides numerous
opportunities to help us prepare for the celebration of the
Lord's coming - weekday Masses, Exposition, Confessions
and Rosary. In addition here are some online resources to aid
your devotions at home:

LiveSIMPLY ADVENT CALENDARS As we prepare to celebrate
God’s great act of love for the whole of His creation through
the Incarnation, let us all try to “live simply” day by day in
Advent and follow Pope Francis’s call for us to care for our
common home, the earth, & all its people. Copies of 2
“alternative” Advent Calendars (for children & adults) are
available with suggestions for different priorities for gifts and
daily life, that may help reduce the pressure on ourselves and
the earth’s precious resources. Families are all different, so
please adapt the calendars to suit your own needs & lifestyles,
and share your ideas with family and friends. Perhaps you can
then find a new liveSimply tradition for celebrating Christmas
together See: https://cjp.parish-news.com/

THE CAMBRIDGE FRATERNITY OF THE SECULAR FRANCIS-
CAN ORDER will be singing Christmas Carols on Saturday,
9th December 2017 - from 11:30 to 11:45 at the St Andrews
Chapel at OLEM. Followed by drinks and refreshments in the
church Hall! Come and join us!
CATHOLIC EDUCATION You will be aware that last year the
Government promised to lift the 50% cap on faith admissions
for new religious schools. This policy had proved to be an ef-
fective ban on any new Catholic schools as the Bishops’ Con-
ference ruled that opening a Catholic school that could poten-
tially turn away Catholics in favour of non-Catholics was
against Canon Law. Last September the Government acknowl-
edged the cap was unfair to the Catholic community and
pledged to scrap it. The Conservatives included a commitment
to remove it in their manifesto. Unfortunately, the feedback
we are getting is that the Secretary of State for Education is
thinking about U-turning on this manifesto commitment. The
Catholic community now needs to make its collective voice
heard and tell the Secretary of State that this level of discrimi-
nation against Catholic schools, parents and children is unac-
ceptable. As such we are urging Catholics to write to the Sec-
retary of State and their MP expressing their concern that this
promise to our community could be broken. These emails can

OUR PARISH PRAYER
O God, through Baptism you have made us your children,
heirs of heaven and members of the Church. Make our par-
ish a family of one heart and mind in love towards you.
Grant that our common life and work may be an example to
all about us. Guide our Rector and assistant Priests in their
work along with all those involved in ministry.
Acknowledge the intercessions of Our Blessed Lady of The
Assumption and The English Martyrs, our patrons; and keep
us secure in your love. We ask this through our Lord Jesus
Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity
of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen
Please pray for Joanne Walters, Christopher Browne, Ma-
ria Haynes, Mary Wallace, Teresa Foley, Mike Gilpin, Fr
David Hennessy, Keith Docherty, Matthew Morgan, Martin
Ward, Michael Robertson, Ann Verde, Edelburga Anand,
Maria Morselli, Baby Imogen.
For those who have died, and those whose anniversary of
death occurs at this time. May their souls and the souls of all
the Faithful Departed, through the mercy of God, rest in
peace. Amen.
Loving God, your Son accepted our sufferings to teach
us the virtue of patience in human illness. Hear our
prayers for our sick brothers and sisters. May all who
suffer pain, illness, disease, and the frailty of old age re-
alise that they have been chosen to be saints and know
that they are joined to Christ in his suffering for the sal-
vation of the world. Amen.
