The values instilled by my Sacred Heart education during the early 1980s encouraged our class to pursue all available careers and opportunities. Limitations based on gender were not an issue, in fact, it never crossed our minds. We were empowered as women to pursue our education and succeed in attaining our goals. I have many memories of alumnae addressing the student body at assemblies in the Study Hall and being impressed by their achievements, poise and confidence. It inspired me and made my goals seem all that more attainable.

Alumnae Pin Ceremony

For the past five years, our graduating students have invited a special alumna in their lives to return and participate in the annual Alumnae Pin Ceremony. On May 24th, this tradition continued. Bianca Arciero ’08 spoke to all about her involvement on the Montreal Alumnae Association Board and Maureen Slattery ’58, mother of Carolyn ’81 and Tara Durley ’85, and grandmother to one of the graduates, Meaghan Sabourin ’16, recounted her memorable days at the Convent and how her Sacred Heart experience had a profound impact on her life. Alumnae Relations Coordinator, Maureen Brown ’80, explained to the graduates and 45 alumnae present that through extension, we are all members of the Canadian Association of Sacred Heart Alumnae/i (CASHA) and AMASC (Association mondial des anciens et des anciennes du Sacré-Coeur). Head of School, Shawn O’Donnell, and Anika Maloni ’97, Director of Academics, each shared how unique and wonderful is the Network of Sacred Heart Schools and how fortunate we are to be a part of something so special. Following the ceremony, all enjoyed a refreshing glass of lemonade in the Headmistresses’ Parlour.

Robotics Competition

Sacred Heart and Loyola students have once again teamed up to compete at the FIRST Robotics Challenge. The schools’ respective robotics teams merged last year and this alliance is one that everybody loves being a part of. The team built a successful robot that led the way to the World Championships in St. Louis, Missouri.Although the club exists all year, it truly flourishes from January onwards. Students, with mentorship from Sacred Heart and Loyola alums, have six weeks to build a robot before it goes head to head

against robots from all over the world.

The robotics club promotes the values of STEM to young women. It also features other non-science related fields. While some design, program and build the robot, others focus on sponsorships, business models, media and social networking. Students have the opportunity to explore completely different interests. Time management and working as a team are skills that the students need and master during the season.

This year`s team, The Northern Knights, competed at four competitions. The robotics team went to New Hampshire for a preliminary competition, Oshawa, Ontario for the Greater Toronto East Regional and competed in Montreal at the Uniprix Stadium. Following the regional rounds

of competition, the team was invited to the World Championships in St. Louis.

Whether working on the robot or competing in another country, the students become close friends, and form an inexplicable bond. In fact, next year the graduating students are planning to return as mentors. The opportunities that come with participating in robotics, whether it be as a student or as mentor, are limitless. FIRST Robotics is about innovation and initiative and The Northern Knights are excited for next year’s challenges. They would not have been able to accomplish such amazing achievements without the support of the School, the faculty & staff and the dedicated alumni!

Spring Tea & Family MassReunion in Toronto

On April 7th, 35 alumnae living in the greater Toronto area attended a lovely 5 à 7 held at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club. After meeting and greeting everyone, Head of School, Shawn O’Donnell, gave an update on the School’s new implementation of technology in the classroom, the increased enrollment for 2016/17 and announced the launch of the School’s Capital Campaign.

3

This annual spring tradition promises many alumnae and their families, as well as current students and their families, an afternoon of reconnecting with old friends and meeting new ones. Fr. Joe Sullivan presided over the mass on Saturday, April 16th and all enjoyed a wonderful assortment of homemade sweets baked by so many alumnae. Students gave school tours and the arts & craft room was filled with youngsters hard at work. Mark your calendars for spring 2017, and please join us.

As part of her practice she contracts with Survivors of Torture, International, a nonprofit group that helps victims of political torture find asylum and healing. “There is so much need in the world it can make you feel helpless. I find that one antidote is to reach across cultural divides to let people who have been profoundly injured know that there are those of us who care and can do something to help. Victims often arrive here with nothing but their hope and resilience, and they are usually devastated that they are separated from their families who remain in danger. When there is support from the legal and therapeutic community it can make an enormous difference in their lives. I have seen people transform. And it helps me to get through the evening news.”

this coming Fall 2016. Katie studies animal bones from archaeological sites to learn what people ate and how they hunted in the past. This summer, she will be travelling to Jens Munk Island, off the coast of Baffin Island, Nunavut, to excavate some prehistoric dwellings.

It is with a saddened heart that we announce that Religious of the Sacred Heart, Shelagh Deegan, RSCJ passed away peacefully at Caritas Residence in Halifax, surrounded by the love and care of her Sisters, on Friday, May 13, 2016. Shelagh Joan Deegan was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on February 21, 1932, and grew up during the Depression and WWII. In 1946, after enrolling at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, Sr. Deegan received her teaching certificate and taught in the Winnipeg Public School System. She entered the Society of the Sacred Heart in Albany, New York, in 1961, making her first vows three years later and her final vows at The Sacred Heart School of Montreal’s chapel in 1969. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Newton College of the Sacred Heart, Sr. Deegan went on to the University of British Columbia earning a Master’s in Business Administration in 1969. At that time, she was the only woman in her class. Sr. Deegan then began her long history in provincial administration, serving as Provincial Bursar for 39 years. As a colleague of many treasurers of religious orders, she was one of the founders of ATRI (Association of Treasurers of Religious Institutes). This role found her working towards the opening of schools and implementing projects for the Society at the international level. She assisted the Uganda-Kenya Province in building a primary school, opened in 2002, to educate young Ugandan girls according to the philosophy of the Society of the Sacred Heart.

Sr. Deegan’s skills in finance were matched by her empathetic love of people. She was known for her charming personality and desire to build relationships. She will also be remembered for her faith-filled spirit, her graciousness, her financial wisdom, her calmness, discretion and wise counsel, and for her witty and dry sense of humour. Sr. Deegan taught at The Sacred Heart School of Montreal and was a member of the Board of Directors and the City House Foundation. She was remembered at the School’s weekly mass on May 17th.

The Alumnae Association invites all to a mass in

memory of Sr. Shelagh Deegan on Sunday, August

28, 2016 at 10:30 am at Ascension of our Lord located

at 375 Kitchener Ave, Westmount, Québec H3Z 2G1.

Sacred Heart Celebrates the 155th Graduating Class

8

The Class of 2016, amongst their families, friends and faculty, received their high school diplomas and over 30 graduates merited special prizes and awards. The graduation address, given by Antonia Maioni ’79, a member of the School’s Board of Directors and incoming Dean of Arts at McGill University, was poignant and practical as she inspired the girls to be engaged, brave, and open-hearted as they move forward. Tatiana Tuccinardi, the class valedictorian, was equally eloquent in sharing the challenges and successes faced in high school, and her recognition for the sense of belonging that she and her peers felt through their years at Sacred Heart.

Sacred Heart now accepts international students from Asia and Latin America. They live with local Montreal families while pursuing their studies. Hosting a student in your home, for an academic year, is a great way to learn about different cultures, languages and people. Bring the world to your home by hosting an international student !

Financiallly Rewarding - Host families provide guidance and support to students in a safe and nurturing environment, as well as a private room, three meals-a-day and healthy snacks. In return, the host family is compensated with a monthly stipend to offset these costs. Students are responsible for all other costs, such as;

transportation, school supplies, clothing, and recreation.

Gain a different perspective - Seeing the world through your student’s eyes is refreshing and rewarding. Rediscover your city with your family by showing your student around! Impact, inspire and influence a young person in a positive way - the ultimate reward for any host.

If hosting a student is of interest, please contact our Enrolment Management Coordinator Stephanie Broadhurst at the school: [email protected] or sign up online: https://secure.canadahomestayinternational.com/portal/portal/hosts/his
