We’re thrilled to share ARF Executive Director Elena Bicker’s induction into the Contra Costa Commission for Women’s Hall of Fame! Elena was recognized in a formal ceremony in March for “Women Demonstrating Leadership”. We thought we’d share this memora-ble snippet of her speech: “Too many people view management as leader-ship. Leadership can come from any level and role. Be open! Be driven. Help oth-ers and work together in a common mission.” Please join us in extending warm congratulations to Elena and thanking her for providing leadership in a variety of roles at ARF since 1993!

I believe people want to do the right thing. It may be Pollyannaish of me. If the right resources are available and barriers to success are removed, I believe folks will make the
right choice. Three to four million animals’ lives are lost annually
because there simply aren’t enough homes for them. I believe, collectively, we can reduce the number of pets euthanized and increase the live release rate of dogs and cats in the community by preventing breeding through spay and neuter. Every year ARF increases its spay/neuter efforts, but like many other animal welfare organizations, still struggles to keep up with the overwhelming demand. Last year, ARF was able to perform 3,148 spay and neuter surgeries, and we will exceed that number this year. Our medical team completed 832 free surgeries for our cat partners, who would otherwise be unable to access affordable veterinary care. We continue to stretch
ourselves thin to remove barriers, but at the end of the day we must increase our resources to keep adequately responding to the pet overpopulation crisis. Small steps make a big difference - one day at a time. We are thrilled to have acquired the Stephen Ball Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic in late 2015, and have already performed 59 spay and neuter surgeries on it. We are grateful to our expert Clinic staff for stretching their resources to perform these surgeries, while still providing excellent day-to-day care to ARF’s shelter animals and the animals of low-income patrons who need veterinary care. We have increased our resources to fight pet overpopulation by hiring a small medical team to staff this versatile and important vehicle, and it is our dream to have the financial resources to deploy it every day. Having the ability to operate the vehicle daily would allow ARF to spay or neuter an additional 4,000 animals each year – increasing our community impact by 119%. We are thankful to have received spay/neuter grants from PetSmart Charities and the ASPCA; however, ARF needs additional funding to target the people and communities who do not have access to sterilization for their pets.
It is estimated that 50% of pets entering animal shelters each year are euthanized, but for many breeds, the odds are much lower. In some communities, only 5% of Pit Bulls entering shelters find new homes. The only known solution to this heartbreaking crisis is to spay and neuter pets. Your gift today
will help ARF achieve its dream of sending the mobile clinic out on a daily basis, and allow us to say “yes” to people who want to do the right thing. Together, we can break down the barriers and move towards a world of no unwanted pets.

Connecting Hearts
Jonathan and CeeCeeAdopted March 2016
If you’ve ever encoun-tered ARF’s Pet Hug Pack®, there’s no for-getting Cara Mia. An exquisitely beautiful longhaired tortoiseshell who is rarely seen with-out one of her signature hats, Cara Mia has been bringing her special brand of magic to people with the Pet Hug Pack since 2008. Adopted from ARF as a kitten by her mom, Joann, Cara Mia has touched the hearts and lives of thousands of people in the Bay Area through her visits to schools, hospi-tals, ARF’s camps, and appearances at ARF events like Stars to the Rescue and Wine & Whiskers. In December, Joann shared Cara Mia’s journey to the Petco Holiday Wishes campaign, and was awarded a $10,000 grant for ARF! In her winning entry, Joann explains the incredible difference this once-discarded shelter cat has made: “Cara Mia gave me a new mission in life and makes an incredible number of people happy almost daily. She was a gift to me that just keeps on giving to others.” Learn more about the Pet Hug Pack at arflife.org.
SonnyAdopted October 2015
“We wanted to let you know how thank-ful we are for our adoption of Sonny. Sonny was just 63 pounds when we got her. She is now 90 pounds of solid muscle. We have 55 acres for her to roam around on, and she has four other doggie friends to keep her company (including another from ARF!). THANK YOU for your wonderful work in rescuing these dogs. We wanted to let you know how happy Sonny is and how lucky we were to get her.”

Like many others, Air Force veteran Jonathan had a hard time adjusting after his deployment. He spent most days at home, not interacting with many people. When he heard about ARF’s Pets for Vets program, something clicked. One of his few joys was dog-sitting for his in-laws. Maybe, he realized, a dog would be a good fit. Enter Ceecee. Ceecee came to ARF after being surrendered to a public animal shelter after her owner passed away. Her calm, sweet demeanor made her seem like she’d be a perfect fit for Jonathan’s life. Now, Jonathan and Ceecee are a team. His therapist enthuses: “Veterans sometimes just need someone to watch their back - someone they can depend on, someone that depends on them. Ceecee provides all of these for Jonathan.” No longer staying inside, the two of them enjoy long walks together several times a day, and Ceecee is in training to become a certified service dog. Jonathan says: “I very much appreciate this program and partnerships who have helped me. And Ceecee!”

25 Years of Inspiration ~ 33,000 Lives Saved
In 1990, a stray tortoiseshell cat took a wrong turn at the Oakland Coliseum - with an impact stretching far beyond what anyone could have imagined. Evie’s detour opened the eyes of Elaine and Tony La Russa to
the plight of homeless animals nationwide and the lack of no-kill shelters in Contra Costa County, California. With a small group of dedicated people, their vision established ARF one year later in 1991. ARF has adopted more than 33,000 animals since that inspiring moment on the ball field. The dogs and cats who pass through our doors are still our greatest teachers. They are the true architects of what ARF has built over the past quarter century. Responding to their needs, we created programs offering hope, love, and healing to thousands of lives every year. In honor of all the animals and people who helped ARF reach this milestone, we’d like to introduce you to six special friends who were the sparks igniting our imaginations to develop programs benefitting pets and people in new and exciting ways. Once homeless and unloved, these resilient pets paid it forward through their stories and their unconditional love. Here’s to them – and to what the next 25 years will bring.
Visit arflife.org to find out how you can help.
EVIE - The CatalystThe cat who started it all. Evie, the stray cat who dashed around the field at the Oakland Coliseum during a nation-ally televised game between the Oakland A’s and the New York Yankees in 1990, was the catalyst for ARF. After try-ing to locate a shelter to take Evie and discovering there weren’t any no-kill facilities in Contra Costa County, Califor-nia, Elaine and Tony La Russa knew they had to act. A year later, ARF was born, rescuing 11 dogs and 146 cats in our first year - and Evie lived out her life in a loving home.
HOPE - The InspirationWhile living on the streets, Hope suffered an injury that rendered her hind legs completely paralyzed. She survived by developing an incredible balancing act on her two front paws. That’s when ARF stepped in. Thanks to a dedicated foster - who named her Hope in hopes she’d walk again - and medical support, Hope recovered and walked on four feet again. Her story inspired ARF to begin a fund in her name - the Hope Fund - to help shelter animals overcome extraordinary medical conditions which would otherwise be beyond our resources.
Page 9 www.arflife.org Spring 2016
KAYLA - The HealerEarly on, we realized relationships with animals were power-ful medicine. Kayla, a Golden Retriever with a sunny dispo-sition, was one of the first handful of therapy pets in what is today Pet Hug Pack®. One of her first visits was to an adult facility specializing in Alzheimer’s care. A man who had not spoken since moving to the facility looked at her and ex-claimed, “Doggie!”, burying his face in her fur. Stunned at the impact of her visit, we kept expanding the reach of our therapy team, which now boasts 200 animals bringing joy to hundreds of thousands of Bay Area residents every year.
BINGO - The SurvivorWho would douse a puppy in chemicals, set him on fire, and leave him to die by the side of the road? We never learned the story of Bingo’s horrifying ordeal, but it had a tremen-dously positive outcome - the expansion of the ARF Emer-gency Medical Fund® (EMF). Bingo required an extensive amount of treatments to make it through, and hundreds of local residents donated to EMF to give him a second chance at life. Happily, the donations enabled ARF to provide the care he needed, and Bingo healed and thrived with his fam-ily.
PEPPER - The HeroPepper was one of 13 dogs rescued from a hoarding situa-tion, and we immediately recognized she demonstrated all the qualities of an emotional support animal – responsive, confident, and calm. We matched her with a veteran suffer-ing from PTSD, nightmares, and seizures, all related to his years in combat. Pepper immediately began to alert to his nightmares, waking him and lying across his chest to calm him down, and also began alerting to his impending sei-zures. Her responses qualified her to be a full-fledged service dog, the first from ARF’s Pets for Vets program.
PIERRE - The VIPOf the 33,000 lives saved during ARF’s 25 years, one cat looms large in our memory. Pierre, a handsome, charming tuxedo cat, arrived at ARF weighing a staggering 40 pounds. He slimmed down by half during the two years it took for him to find his forever home. We found many creative ways to introduce him to the public, including a Parisian-themed video and his own profile on LinkedIn, complete with re-sume and business cards! The increased exposure not only found him his home, but introduced a whole new audience to ARF’s animals and misson.

Kitten Season Arrives at ARF - Will You Help?
With the spring comes the kittens. Wave after wave of helpless newborns flood animal shelters and rescue groups nationwide, requiring round-the-clock feeding and care. Sadly, many shelters do not have the resources to devote to helping these babies thrive. ARF saves as many as we can, but we need the help of fos-ter families to assist with their care until they are old enough to be spayed or neutered and put up for adoption. Fostering is an incredibly rewarding way to help ARF save more lives. Last year, we were able to rescue an additional 900 animals thanks to our foster families. All supplies are provided - all you need is love.
Learn more about the joys of fostering! Sign up today for a foster orientation at

We are very grateful for the enduring commitment and support from our friends who help ARF throughout the year to bring more ani-mals and people together.
Your decision to remember ARF in your will or trust will impact the lives of countless animals and people for years to come. Legacy gifts pro-vide very meaningful support, ensuring ARF will have the resources to continue our life-saving work into the future, while fulfilling your personal wishes and financial goals.
Planned gifts can include bequests, gifts of life insurance, retire-ment plans and IRA’s, real estate and other opportunities. Your legacy to ARF will one day provide a lasting promise of hope for so many animals and people in need.
I would be happy to speak with you personally about how you can provide a lifeline to animals in need for generations to come.

help us care for them!

Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic Update
www.arflife.org Spring 2016
Looking for love...
KissesFozzie
On the Road with ARF’s Mobile Clinic ARF’s Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic is already making an impact for animals in need! Our first day onboard, we altered twelve kittens. Since then, we have used our 33 foot long, custom-built vehicle to increase ARF’s capacity for spay/neuter, and have hit the road to bring the clinic to our partnering animal shelters to help relieve the overwhelming amount of animals needing to be altered. Keep up with the Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic on ARF’s Facebook page!
