H I P H E A L T H : P a r t F o u rTRY INCORPORATING THE FOLLOWING EXERCISE INTO YOUR ROUTINE TWO OR THREE DAYS PER WEEK.

SOURCE: WWW.SILVERSNEAKERS.COM

HIP HINGEStand with your feet hip-width apart, knees slightly bent, and hands on hips. Brace your core—imagine you’re about to get punched in the stomach. Without changing the position of your knees, bend at your hips and lower your torso until it’s almost parallel to the floor (or as far as you can comfortably go without rounding your back). Pause, then lift your torso back to the starting position. Be sure to squeeze your glutes and push your hips forward to lift your torso back to the starting position. This ensures you’re engaging your hip muscles instead of relying on your lower back. Do 10 reps total.

The Cherry on Top: YogaIn addition to low-impact cardio and strength exercises,

yoga can work wonders for tight hips. The way yoga com-bines stretching and strengthening the muscles in your hips, legs, and glutes is ideal for helping relieve pain.

A recent study from Florida Atlantic University found that doing 45 minutes of chair yoga twice per week reduced pain and improved overall quality of life in older adults with osteoarthritis.

Chair yoga is practiced sitting in a chair or standing while holding the chair for support, so it’s a great option for beginners or anyone dealing with an injury or balance problems.

Whichever style of yoga you try, seek out proper instruc-tion from a yoga teacher to ensure you’re performing postures correctly. And tell your instructor about any pain or injuries before class so they can suggest modifications.

Shabbat Lunch Chavurah is partially funded by a grant from SAJSS.

35 to 40 members were present in the August Shabbat Lunch Chavurah at Temple Beth-El along with Rabbi Nathan and Cantor Berlin. Lunch was an interest-ing Mediterranean combination of diced chicken in sauce, pita bread, chopped vegetables, and dessert which consisted of mixed fruit and baklava.

The program was the film "The

Little Traitor," the story about a young boy during the period of English rule over Palestine and his interaction with one member of the English military. This was a very difficult period for the Sabra Jews; and the rebellious plots and harsh governance made it difficult for there to be any peaceful interaction between the parties. We are all glad that this period of hostility is over.

RESCHEDULED: A Great Day at the Garden community event moved to Sunday, January 21

The San Antonio Botani-cal Garden is undergoing an eight-acre expansion that will bring new opportunities to explore and connect with na-ture and discover the value of plants, water, freshly grown food, and the outdoors.

Major features include the Garden Gateway, Welcome & Discovery Complex, Culinary Garden and Outdoor Kitchen, and Family Adventure Garden.

A delay in this construc-tion and requirements for the reserved space has made it necessary to change the date of A Great Day at the Garden community event that was scheduled to take place on Sunday, September 10.

So our event guests can maximize their visit to The Garden by being able to enjoy this new addition, we have changed the date to Sunday, January 21, 2018.

The committee that is planning this fabulous event, SAJSS' Caring Community, is working hard to plan the event to tie into Tu B'Shevat celebrations. Please stay tuned for more details as we finalize!

The Caring Community is a collaboration of area congre-gations and organizations that include: San Antonio Jewish Senior Services (SAJSS), Congregation Agudas Achim, Chabad Center for Jewish Life and Learning, Congregation Rodfei Sholom, Temple Beth-El, Congregation Beth Am, PJ Library, Heintz Preschool and Hebrew Free Loan of San Antonio.

Please note that if you've already RSVP'ed for the original date we will need for you to RSVP again for the new date so we are able to get an accurate count.
