Arthur and Trinette RudmanBlaauwkrantz has been in the Rudman family since 1936. The first piece of the ranch was bought by Arthur’s grandfather, Oliver Charles Rudman. Arthur, the present CEO of Blaauwkrantz Safaris, was born and raised on the farm. He is responsible for the outfitting side of the business and is also available as a professional hunter when necessary. Besides being a wildlife conservationist, he is passionate about developing new ranches and livestock, in particular, Angora goats, Boer goats and Dorper sheep. Trinette and Arthur were married in 1970 and have 3 children, Eardley, François and Suzanne (Zani). Shortly after their marriage they became pioneers in game ranching in the Eastern Cape. Trinette is a real asset to our team, as she takes care of the lodge and oversees all the delicious meals served. Introduction FamilyWelcome to Blaauwkrantz Safaris operated by the Arthur Rudman Family! We hope to provide you with as much information as you could possibly need about our family-owned and operated trophy hunting safari destination. We believe that your time spent learning about us will be of value to you in booking an unforgettable experience. Our single-unit 65 000 acre hunting ranch is located in an area well-known for its rolling hills of valley bushveld, and we are just 45 minutes drive from the Port Elizabeth airport. We are particularly proud to own the largest single, family-owned hunting ranch in the malaria-free Eastern Cape, South Africa. We welcome family groups, hunting groups and the trophy collector to our spacious accommodation. Thanks to stable politics and a good safety record for families, hunting in South Africa with your family has become a trend. Keep in mind the old adage “the family who plays together, stays together”.

We have a proud heritage of hosting international hunters since 1978. Not only are we well-represented in the SCI record book, but numerous Weatherby award winners have also hunted with us. While we have a passion for what we do in a professional and enthusiastic manner, we pride ourselves most of all on the family-style hospitality we provide our clients.

Specialising in the Eastern Cape species, we offer 44 huntable species. For those who prefer not to hunt, or would like to take time out to sightsee, we also have a selection of observer activities to make your safari a trip of a lifetime.

The Best Kudu Hunting in the WorldBlaauwkrantz Safaris is world renowned for its top quality trophies. In particular, we are famous for the Eastern Cape Kudu - the largest privately owned herd in Africa that roam freely in over 100 square miles of contiguous Kudu habitat. Over the past 8 years we have successfully hunted over 90 trophy Kudu bulls a year with a 99.5% success rate on trophy bulls on Blaauwkrantz. A record no other outfitter in Africa can match. The SCI Record book is our testimony.

We are also proud to have the largest numbers of Cape Bushbuck, Bushpig, Cape Grysbok and a wide variety of other species on Blaauwkrantz. There are 25 huntable species and an estimated 20 000 antelope on our property. We also hunt in the wider Eastern Cape, offering 44 species altogether. Sustainable utilisation is our cornerstone when managing our wildlife resource. This is real African hunting at its best! Blaauwkrantz Safaris The Rudman Family

Our neighbour, Eric Daniell, is a game and goat farmer and a professional hunter with an excellent knowledge of our area. He has been guiding for Blaauwkrantz since 2004.

Professional hunting friend, Paul Smith, studied commerce and engineering at the University of Port Elizabeth with François. Paul is also a qualified taxidermist.

Barry Long is a rancher, professional hunter and citrus farmer who studied with Philip at Cedara Agriculture College in Natal.

Braun Olckers is also a rancher, professional hunter and guides eco-tours during the non-hunting season. Born and bred in the Eastern Cape, the knowledge that these guys have of the area, as well as of the animal habitat and hunting, is second to none. Each is equipped with a 4x4 vehicle and caper / skinner. Collectively they have over 60 years of guiding experience, which has contributed towards our virtual 100% success rate.

Our hunting season is from April to September. At Blaauwkrantz Safaris we offer our clients a choice of hunting options. Clients can hunt off the trophy price list on a daily rate; alternatively, they can choose from a package designed by Blaauwkrantz; or have a package tailor-made to suit their individual needs. While trophies and days can be added to packages, substituting of trophies in packages is discouraged. Package and trophy fees are listed in our annual trophy price list sheet and we do not charge VAT on package hunts. Blaauwkrantz is world renowned for hunting the following species: Eastern Cape Greater Kudu, Bushpig, Cape Bushbuck and Cape Grysbuck. We are extremely proud that due to the natural habitat, the populations are higher than in any other area in southern Africa.

Night drives also offer an interesting variation to the regular hunting scene as certain fascinating nocturnal animals can be viewed during these trips. Most of our hunting is undertaken using the ‘spot and stalk’ ‘stand’ and ‘still’ method and our hunts are fair-chase. With shots varying between 100-300 yards, clients are urged to practise shooting from the long bipod shooting sticks that are commonly used at Blaauwkrantz.

Our most popular package at Blaauwkrantz is our 6 day /6 night, five species “African Bushveld Special”. We offer the package at a reduced rate, since all the species are hunted on Blaauwkrantz, which in turn means that overheads are lower. Our “African Bushveld Special” includes accommodation, 1X1 guided service, transportation, field preparation of trophies and the following trophies: East Cape Greater Kudu, Impala, Bush Duiker and a choice of two: Bushbuck, Blesbuck and Springbuck, which makes it the ideal package for the first time African hunter. Furthermore, additional species can be added as per our trophy price list. We pride ourselves in being specialists in hunting plains game of the Eastern Cape. We hunt exclusively in our province and, because we have remained true to what we have learned over the years since the establishment of

Blaauwkrantz Safaris in 1978, we believe we can offer you a superlative hunting experience. Many hunters take advantage of our offer to hunt the 2nd Kudu, 2nd Impala and 2nd Duiker at reduced rates.

Recently added to our package is allowing clients to hunt Impala, Kudu and Duiker females at reduced rates to assist in our culling programmes. This will be available from August to November.

Because such a large quantity of game can be found on Blaauwkrantz, we prefer to limit the amount of travelling while on safari. Clients also enjoy travelling to Springvale, to hunt the mountain species not common on Blaauwkrantz.

Our tracking hounds form an invaluable part of the team, particularly where trophy animals have been wounded. The use of these dogs has increased the recovery of wounded animals in the field.

The vegetation on Blaauwkrantz is predominantly East Cape Valley Bushveld (subtropical thicket), which consists mainly of dense thickets that break up periodically into grassy plains. Given the fact that the Eastern Cape has six different biomes, there is a wide variety of game available in the area.

The terrain varies in the south from coastal forest to undulating hills stretching to the mountainous Winterberg Mountain range in the north, to the drier semi-arid central Karoo area. Rain is to be expected throughout the year and we experience an average of two rainy days per month. Blaauwkrantz Safaris realizes that the actual hunt forms only part of a client’s entire safari experience. Indeed receiving their trophies at home in excellent condition

completes a good safari, with quality trophy mounts to remember it by.

All our skinners are well-trained and have plenty of experience.

We offer a professional “Dip & Pack” trophy preparation service for clients trophies if they are using their local taxidermist. If clients prefer to use a South African taxidermist, we have a number of reputable taxidermists in our area. Hunting

Accommodation

Clients are accommodated in our spacious and comfortable ranch style Blaauwkrantz lodge. Besides hunting in the best hunting country in Africa, clients can also enjoy fine South Africa wines and local venison, lamb and beef. Hunter groups consisting of three or more hunters can enjoy the exclusivity of our large ranch homestead lodge and hunting areas. Our lodge, with its unique African atmosphere, has en-suite bathrooms and can accommodate up to 12 clients, or 5 – 6 hunters at one time. A telephone is available in the lodge; clients can either use calling cards or their credit cards to make calls, i.e. AT&T. We do have cell phone reception in most areas and triband cell phones will work in South Africa. Alternatively clients can hire a South African cell phone to keep in contact with their family. There is also the option for the client to hire a satellite phone and take it with them on safari. Clients also have access to computers to send e-mails and to conduct other business activities. Electricity is 220V, and we recommend that clients bring an international converter adapter with them. A laundry service is available from Monday – Friday. Clients hunting the mountain species are accommodated in the beautiful 1910 Springvale Mountain Lodge, hosted by Zani and Philip, which also has electricity and en suite bathrooms.

Beachfront CondosWe have two self-catering beachfront condos (one bedroom and three bedroom units) along the main beaches of Port Elizabeth. These may be made use of as pre- or post-safari accommodation. They are situated within walking distance of top restaurants, main beaches, shopping centres, flea markets, The Boardwalk Casino and other entertainment facilities.

Garden RouteTo complete your safari experience, we can recommend good tour guides to take you on guided trips along the scenic 500-mile garden route from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town. Along the way clients visit the coastal towns of Plettenburg Bay and Knysna, the Ostrich farms and Cango Caves of Oudtshoorn; experience cage shark diving in Gansbaai and stop over in the winelands of Stellenbosch. Set aside at least 3 days for this breathtaking trip and to spend a few days seeing the sights of our magnificent Mother City, including Table Mountain, the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront and the penguin colony of Cape Point.

Deep Sea fishingA part from hunting, Blaauwkrantz Safaris offers deep-sea fishing charters for Yellowfin tuna and bottom fishing (reef fishing), catching fish between 10-85kg (20-200lbs). There are also plenty of other game fish common to the African coast including Cob, Cape Salmon, Skipjack / Bonito, Dolphin fish and even Marlin. Game fishing takes place at a 30 - 40 mile drop-off, just off the continental shelf. Heavy or light tackle can be used for fishing, the choice is yours. April – July are the months when these fish are to be found in abundance. Limited bird hunting is also available during certain times of the year.

Activities for non-huntersBlaauwkrantz will ensure that non-hunters also enjoy their stay and have an opportunity to sightsee in the area if they do not want to accompany the hunting party. Non-hunters who will be joining the hunting party are requested to pack dark khaki / camouflage clothing. Day trips can be arranged to enjoy the following:

• Shopping in Port Elizabeth.

• Addo National Elephant Park, located 40 minutes drive from the lodge, which was established in 1931 to save the Eastern Cape Elephant and Cape Buffalo from extinction. Addo is now home to over 400 elephant and offers an unbeatable opportunity to view these amazing giants of Africa. Addo is also home to a large variety of birds (185 species), the black rhino, and numerous varieties of buck species, as well as the unique flightless dung beetle.

• Various private game reserves, where the Big Five can be viewed in open vehicles, are situated within an hour’s drive from our lodge. Schotia Private Game Reserve will collect clients for a day trip to Addo and Schotia. Blaauwkrantz Safaris offers unequalled game viewing in conditions best suited to the traveller.

• Horse riding trips in the Addo Park or along the coast.

• Elephant back safaris in the Addo Park.

• The historical town of Graaff-Reinet, one and a half hours drive from the lodge, is situated in the middle of the Karoo Nature Reserve, and was founded in 1786. You will find over 300 national monuments in Graaff- Reinet, more than you are likely to find in any other town!

• We will show you the most breathtaking part of the beautiful Garden Route, where you can see mountains, indigenous forests, deep gorges, coastline of cliffs and sandy beaches. You can also view ancient yellowwood trees, fynbos plants and birdlife.

• Bayworld, located on Port Elizabeth’s beachfront has an exceptional aquarium and hosts daily dolphin displays. It also houses a tropical house, snake park and a museum.

• Port Elizabeth is located in Algoa Bay and every year whales are familiar sights along the Coastline, a not- to- be missed experience. Sightings include the Southern Right whale, which mates and calves between July and October each year in the sheltered Algoa Bay.

• The nearby historic town of Grahamstown offers a wonderful ‘Battlefields” tour by historian, Alan Weyer. He tells the stories of the wars between the English and the native Xhosas in the early 1800’s, and is such a good storyteller that you actually feel part of the war. The Annual Arts Festival takes place in Grahamstown, early July each year and attracts a wide South African and international audience. This is the home of the Xhosa people whose culture and colourful beadwork is of great interest.

• One of the biggest entertainment centres in Port Elizabeth must surely be the Boardwalk. While it includes a host of fascinating sights, the one that attracts the most attention is without question the Casino. The Boardwalk boasts a wide range of activities, including a games room, as well as a wide variety of shops and restaurants.

• After sunset the city of Port Elizabeth transforms into a sea of lights and a variety of nightlife. Evening entertainment includes beachfront pubs and cocktail bars.

• There are also many beautiful gardens in the area.

• Various cheetah, lion and crocodile sanctuaries are located in the area and are definitely worth a visit.

Clients are collected and dropped off at the Port Elizabeth airport as a free courtesy service. We suggest that clients fly into either Cape Town or Johannesburg and then catch a connecting flight to Port Elizabeth, which is their final flight destination. Blaauwkrantz Lodge is just a 45-minute drive north of the Port Elizabeth airport. Pick up and drop off from the airport is not included as a hunting day. Flights are to be booked from the client’s country of departure. Blaauwkrantz can supply the names of reputable travel agents in America who frequently book flights to Africa and therefore offer cost effective airfares. South African Airways has two flights daily from the USA, from JFK and Washington Dulles. Delta Airlines has one flight out of Atlanta daily. We also recommend that you consider taking out insurance with your travel agent for trip cancellation and loss of personal effects. We advise hunters to allow a minimum of three hours at Johannesburg Airport to clear customs and their firearms before catching the connecting flight to Port Elizabeth. About the Eastern Cape

The Eastern Cape has earned its reputation for having a superb eco-tourism infrastructure and is proud of its claim that it is 100% malaria-free. It enjoys a daily average of seven hours of sunshine annually. During winter, which is classified as April to August, temperatures range from 7.1 degrees Celsius (44.8 degrees Fahrenheit) to 19.5 degrees Celsius (61.3 degrees Fahrenheit) and 25.4 degrees Celsius (77.8 degrees Fahrenheit). In general, the Eastern Cape weather is kind to visitors, rarely experiencing extremes except perhaps during the height of the Karoo summer. The Eastern Cape boasts a remarkable natural diversity, ranging from the lush, evergreen Tsitsikamma Forest to the rugged Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area, and from the southern slopes of the Drakensberg to the arid Great Karoo. It is known as the land of rolling hills, and is famous for its endless sweeps of rocky coves and sandy beaches, and towering mountain ranges and verdant forests. The Eastern Cape’s astonishing coastline, one of its best features, is a virtual paradise for water sports enthusiasts. Surfers ride the perfect waves, anglers reel in king-size catches, and board sailors revel in the challenge of the wind. Fine leisure resorts and splendid facilities ensure that there is something for everyone!

The Eastern Cape Province, also known as “The Cradle of Human Culture” has played a very prominent role in South African history. While it is recognized as the place where Black and White cultures met for the first time in the 18th century, long before that, man had already left his mark in this area. The discovery of the Nahoon footprints in 1964 establishes that there was a human presence in the area as far back as 200 000 years ago. Consequently, the Eastern Cape city of East London is recognized as the site of the world’s oldest fossilized human footprints. The Eastern Cape is fortunate to be home to the largest land-based mammal, the Elephant; the tallest, the Giraffe; the fastest, the Cheetah; the smallest, the Dwergskeerbek-mouse; the largest non-flying bird, the Ostrich; and the largest flying bird, the Kori Bustard. Blaauwkrantz Safaris offers its clients unrivalled hunting experiences, etiquette and ethics. It is said to be every hunter’s dream to hunt on Blaauwkrantz – make sure you realise your dream!

Why you should book your next hunt with Blaauwkrantz Safaris:

We deal directly with our clients and build a strong relationship with them even before they get to Africa. • Trophies are hunted from sustainable breeding herds. • Family owned (4th generation) and operated. We don’t jeopardize our etiquettes or ethics. • Largest family owned hunting ranch (65 000 acres) in the Eastern Cape.• One of the oldest established hunting operations in South Africa.• Largest privately owned herd of kudu in Africa.• Areas exclusively for our clients.• 44 species.• Fair chase hunting.• 100% malaria-free area.• Safe hunting environment.• Inexpensive rates – more “bang for your buck”.• Taylor-made hunting safaris specific to each hunter’s needs.• 40% of clients who book are return clients.• Majority of clients who book are referrals.• Numerous SCI Record Book entries guided by Blaauwkrantz Safaris.• Comfortable lodges and great South African wines and cuisine.• Variety of activities for non-hunting observers.• Family friendly destination.• Credibility – we are life members of: SCI, Dallas Safari Club, Professional Hunters of South Africa and Wildlife Ranchers South Africa.
