This was started by villagers JenniferTinsley, Kay Garrett and Claire Harris, and facilitated by RuddingtonCommunity Association and theRuddington Neighbourhood Planteam. It was handed in byRuddington’s County Councillor RegAdair on 12th July 2018. Just eightmonths later, that extra pressure hashelped to produce the desired result!

Chairman of NCC’s Communities &Place Committee, Councillor JohnCottee told RUDDINGTON.info: “Thepath will open to the public – withlandscaping works to the embankmentand green areas next to the newfootpath set to be carried out in thenext couple of months.

“The new path, which is also for cycleuse, will provide a safe and pleasantalternative for local people – inparticular for children getting to andfrom local schools, parents withpushchairs as well as mobility scooterusers who currently have to use thesteep, narrow footway over the bridgeon Clifton Road to get to localfacilities.”

The original campaign for this accesswas launched over seven ago byformer Ruddington Parish CouncillorBarbara Breakwell. It was afterresidents from the new housingcomplained to her of their“dangerous” daily walk because thesafer parallel footway/cycleway route

which appeared on plans by theoriginal property developer over adecade ago was never built – until now!

Barbara says: “I must admit, when Istarted this quest in October 2011, Idid not expect it to take this long. But,as my Gran used to say, ‘Patience is avirtue’ and ‘Everything comes to thosewho wait’. Obviously I am delightedthat everyone who comes to thevillage from that area will now have achoice of routes – and this purpose-built route will enable our local pupilsto safely walk, cycle or scoot to school.”

Councillor Adair adds: “I’m absolutelydelighted to see this path completeand open for public use because I’veworked with local residents andsupported the project from day one.I’d like to thank everyone for theirpatience and co-operation throughoutthe works. The path creates a saferroute to school for the children fromnearby housing developments.”

Low-energy, low-level lighting hasbeen installed along the new path totry to keep the impact on neighboursand wildlife to a minimum.

The landscaping works which will betaking place in the coming months willinvolve removing brambles, plantingnew trees, shrubs and bulbs toimprove the adjacent green areas, andinstalling litter bins.

Local mindfulness teacher JakkiPritchard is set to run a free springMindfulness taster session followedby an eight week course in the Chapelat the Framework Knitters Museum.

With spring upon us, we may feeloverwhelmed by the sheer amount of“to-do’s”. Mindfulness can be life-changing by helping us not to feeloverwhelmed by the never-ending“to-do” lists. To slow down whenwe’re stressed or anxious, be less hardon ourselves and to appreciate fullyour own landscape, not just feelweighed down by the stress of all thatneeds to be done.

Mindfulness is proven to reduce stressby 40%, anxiety by 58% anddepression or low mood by up to 50%.By changing how we relate to it, wecan feel calmer and wake up to life, not just exist.

Neighbourhood Plan update

The Ruddington Neighbourhood Planis moving on quickly. A meeting has

taken place with our consultants,Urban Imprint, and a first draft of ourpolicies is being prepared. This takesinto account the results and commentsfrom the last consultation.

In addition, we’re working closely withUrban Imprint to prepare a DesignGuide, a document to supplement theplan, which is intended to provideevidence in support of heritage, designand landscape policies within theNeighbourhood Plan. Part of thisprocess will involve village “walkovers”with Urban Imprint when you cancome along and have your say, so keepyour eyes on noticeboards and socialmedia for further details.

Residents will no doubt be aware thatdevelopers have been carrying outtheir own consultations about theirproposals for the different sites in ourvillage. We await the results ofRushcliffe Borough Council’s Local PlanPart 2 Independent Examination to seewhat this brings.

In the meantime, you can keep up todate with our progress atwww.ruddingtonnp.org.uk, or follow“ruddingtonnp” on Facebook andTwitter.

Extended hours forGP appointments

The news that Rushcliffe has the bestratio of GPs to patients in the country(RCGP, January 2019) is welcome, butthere are still occasions when it’sdifficult to get an appointment justwhen you want one.

If this is the case, consider using the“Extended Hours” service, availablefor patients in Rushcliffe. This allowsyou to make an appointment throughyour usual GP practice for an eveningor weekend consultation with a GP,nurse or healthcare assistant. Theseappointments are available 6.30pm-8.00pm on weekdays and 8.30am-12.30pm on Saturdays, Sundays andBank Holidays. At weekends, there areappointments reserved foremergencies. You’ll be asked to attendone of the three host practices: CastleHealthcare in West Bridgford, EastBridgford or Keyworth. The locationwill depend on the day of yourappointment.

The Extended Hours appointments arebest suited for things that don’t needan ongoing review at your usualpractice. Management of long termconditions are better taken care of byyour usual practice. Repeatprescriptions and sick notes are notavailable via this service.Appointments can also be made witha nurse for dressings, smear tests and

NHS health checks, whilst healthcareassistants offer blood pressure checks,ECGs and phlebotomy services.

The popularity of the Extended Hoursservice means there are now twoadditional ways of bookingappointments. If appropriate, the 111non-emergency medical advicetelephone service can book anappointment for you once you’vebeen triaged to NottinghamEmergency Medical Service (NEMS).Or, you can book Sunday or BankHoliday appointments on Saturdaymornings at Evans Pharmacy inRuddington.

One in, one out forlicensed premises?

Last month, the popular café andcocktail bar Apotheka closed its doorsfor good, much to the disappointmentof its many fans in Ruddington. It’s yetto be revealed what will happen to itsformer premises at 6 Wilford Road, butwe do know that the other businessthat traded there, McCartneysCatering, will be moving to a new home.

Meanwhile, there’s brighter news forRuddington drinkers as a brand new offlicence called The Bottle Top couldsoon be opening at 2 High Street, formerly Glyn Thomas’ greengrocerswhich closed unexpectedly in 2018.

Owned by Anthony Preston, The BottleTop plans to sell craft beer, cider andpremium spirits. In addition – andpartly in homage to the building’sformer tenants – Anthony is alsoplanning to sell a range of artisan foods

including fruit and vegetables, bakedgoods, honey, preserves and coffee.

Assuming a licence is granted, the shopat 2 High Street will open in early April. In the meantime, The Bottle Top’swares were on sale at the secondRuddington Village Market on Saturday2nd March, so some village residentshave already had a sneak peak!

For the latest news, follow ‘The BottleTop’ on Facebook.

Application for another 180houses submitted

Following its public consultation inJanuary, William Davis Homes hasnow applied for outline planningpermission to build 180 houses on“Land East Of Loughborough Road” inRuddington.

This site, off the Mere WayRoundabout, is one of the Green Beltdevelopment areas earmarked inRushcliffe Borough Council (RBC)’sLocal Plan Part 2 which was formerlyknown as RUD13. RBC’s plan suggests170 new homes to fulfil its quota onthis land, which is slightly less thanthese proposals are suggesting. Somemay also think the William Davisapplication is a little premature sincethe Government’s PlanningInspectorate is still deciding on the“soundness” of the Plan following itspublic hearings in December. Thismay be why no deadline forsubmitting comments has yet beenstated. It’s one of four sites whichcould imminently be removed fromRuddington’s Green Belt – to build aneye-watering total of 525 homes onlarge swathes of agricultural landsurrounding our village.

The latest Concept Plan shows verylittle change since the originaldocument on which the public wereconsulted. It suggests how its houses

might be arranged around the oddshaped plot – which borders BalmoreCountry House residential care homeon three sides. It still shows noprovision for a previously mootedfuture access through to FlawforthLane, although it does promise a“potential pedestrian link” to the“adjacent potential development” aswell as another footpath out to theA60.

The plans drawn up by PegasusGroup on behalf of William Davissuggest affordable homes within theproposed mix of housing includeflats, older persons’ housing andfamily homes. Also included areareas of public open space, landscaping and children’s playareas, and “…strengthening ofexisting hedgerows to protect thecharacter of Ruddington’sConservation Area and provide astrong landscape structure within thesite.”

The property developer states: “WilliamDavis considers that this site offers theopportunity to help deliver futurehousing requirements in a sustainableway in line with the aspirations ofRushcliffe Borough Council.”

All the documents associated with thisoutline application (numbered19/00535/OUT) – and your opportunityto comment on these plans – can befound in the Planning and Buildingsection at www.rushcliffe.gov.uk.

Traffic in the villageAny discussion on improvingRuddington soon leads to the topic ofparking. The conversations also includeuse of the village by HGVs and cyclists.

How easy is getting around the village, especially with buggies, mobility aidsand wheelchairs? Do we need morepedestrian crossings, a one-waysystem, permits or a pay and display? How do we make sure there are safeand clear routes to all parts of thevillage for getting to the centre, schoolsand green spaces?

Are there any short-term answers aswell as solutions that will take a fewyears to implement? And how do weencourage people to spend more timein the village, meeting others andshopping locally?

If you have the time, energy andwillingness to explore a range ofoptions, the Parish Council is looking forvolunteers to join a small WorkingGroup to develop the detail of how wecan make moving around the villagework better for us all.

If you’re interested, please contact theParish Council Office with a briefcomment on what you care about andwhat you can contribute to our work.

Meet the...Curry HouseDhaka Deli, High Street

It’s hard to believe that, in the UK, twopubs close every day yet the villagepeople of Ruddington manage to propup seven. And when we merrily spillfrom the pubs with our jovialmunchies, we’re spoilt for choice inthat department, too! It was a stroke ofgenius when Mahbubur Ramen (Mabs)from opened Dhaka Deli’s doors rightnext to The Frame Breakers pub. Afterall, who doesn’t love a good curry aftera few pints?

Dhaka Deli shines a bright hue of lilacover our High Street (it’s decoratedpurple) and over the weekend it’scompletely bustling from beginning toend with happy, purple-lit diners. Their“bring your own booze policy” is anadditional draw to our lively locals.Mid-week is worth a visit too, as duringmy last visit they catered for four of usand we were all amazed by the fresh

food and excellent service. Dhaka Delioffers the good old dishes you’d expectfrom any curry-house, but they also gothe extra mile. They serve up the kindof food you’d find in fine diningrestaurants, but the price and quantityare spot-on. The menu is a fusion ofsouth Indian food, mixing Bangladeshicurries with Indian recipes. They caterfor vegans, too! We spoke to Mabs tofind out more about him and hispopular restaurant.

Q. Why did you open in Ruddington?

A. When the opportunity came up, wehad to take it. Our family run anotherrestaurant in Ruddington and we knewthere was a healthy appetite in Ruddfor good food. I have been in theindustry for 18 years and we wereready.

Q. What are your most popular dishesand what are your signature dishes?

A. Ruddingtonians love our GarlicChicken Masala and Tandoori ChickenSagg. However, for the moreadventurous, our signature dishes likethe Tribuji, Chili Chicken or the MurgLamb Sizzler are big hits.

Q. What is your hottest dish?

A. Vindaloo, but we can make any dishas hot as you like.

Q. How many spices do you use?

A. Something like 40!

Page 15: The Rudd - Issue 18, April 2019 - Ruddington Parish Councilruddingtonparishcouncil.gov.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/... · 2019. 12. 14. · The landscaping works which will be taking

15

Q. People love that they can bringtheir own drinks to the restaurant;what’s the strangest beverage you’veseen?

A. Four women brought in 16 bottlesof wine…

Q. How many people can you cater for?

A. We seat 35 and have taken partybookings for this quantity; our partybookings work out as better value formoney.

Q. What do you like to do in Ruddwhen you’re not working?

A. We have great cafés for breakfastand we love-love our neighbours atThe Frame Breakers pub.

Thanks Mabs! We’re all hungry now.(Don’t forget: Dhaka Deli dotakeaways too!)

Behind the scenes at the museumCome along to the Framework Knitters Museum on Thursday 11th April between11am and 4:30pm for a “Behind the Scenes” experience and have a go at sometraditional spring tasks as we get ready for another exciting year. We’ll be plantinga traditional cottage garden with vegetables and flowers for eating and dyeing.Families can get creative and use our antique machines to create a knittedscarecrow together or a bug hotel to take home. There’ll be spring cleaning in thecottages and the chance to explore the collection and choose an object for display. You can even try your hand at knitting on our antique knitting frames!

It’s an exciting time at the museum as we prepare for a major Heritage LotteryFunded project. There are many opportunities to get involved and help make thisalready special place even better. Come along to see what a difference you canmake. When it comes to volunteering with us, flexibility is the name of the game. We’re not asking you to commit to regular hours or days, every week or month. It’s completely up to you when and how you help us!

From helping with our annual clean-up and conservation works to cataloguing thebooks and videos in our library, to creating striking social media posts andblogs…there’s so much more to volunteering than you might think! We’reespecially interested in hearing from people who’d like to get involved in oureducational and outreach activities with local schools and vulnerable groups. Butwhatever your interests and abilities, we’re sure to have an opportunity to suit.

Best of all, you’ll have the chance to make new friends, spend time at ourwonderful museum site and learn new skills. (How would you like to learn how touse and maintain a historic knitting frame or circular knitting machine?) Yes, we’llask for your time and effort – when you’re free to give it – but you’ll get so muchback in return, including help and support from our team if you need it.To find outmore, just come along on 11th April, call the museum on 0115 984 6914 or [email protected].
