Greetings to all,
Combined meetings with the Rotary Club of Rockingham are always a huge
pleasure, given our long history of association with the club. This week’s visit to
their new meeting venue of the Rockingham RSL Club was a great success. The RSL
Club was a good choice for meeting venue for Rockingham, with good quality meals
and drinks at very reasonable prices. Members of the RSL Club strongly indicated
that they were happy to have established a partnership with Rotary. We wish them all
the very best for the future. It was also a pleasure to have some members of the
Baldivis Club present. Baldivis Club is almost ready for official charter, which will
be a very positive development for this region.
During the course of the meeting we helped farewell one of Rockingham’s
members, Rob Purdie. Rob and his wife Sheelagh have decided to return home to
Scotland after living in Australia for several years. A number of our members will
recall how Rob and Sheelagh, as passionate Scots people, organised a special “Robbie
Burns supper” in January 2016 to which we were invited. The evening included
hearing Burns’ famous poetry, sampling some traditional Scottish dishes which Rob
and Sheila had prepared (including the famous haggis!), and enjoying some
traditional folk dancing. No doubt Rob and Sheelagh will be greatly missed by
Rockingham and Kwinana, but Rob assured us that he will be taking away very
happy memories of his time in Australia and in Rotary.

Christmas party to be held on Sunday 10 December from 9am to 12 noon at the “Patio” at the Kwinana Adventure Park. Members are encouraged to bring along their children and
grandchildren. Currently we will have 26 children and 11 adults attending as guests, selected
by Victory For Life. Funding for this event is going well. Planning to put together some
food hampers and presents for these disadvantaged families; the Spud Shed has agreed to
donate food for these hampers. The new Coles store has also agreed to donate food; Aldi’s to
be approached as well. We also plan to provide some educational material for these people.
We could have approximately 100 people at our gathering!
A number of club members enjoyed catching up last Saturday with former club member and
president Michael Leong and wife Diana. Michael and Diana were very active within our
club for a number of years before deciding to return to Malaysia. At present they are
enjoying a holiday and catch-up with family and friends in Australia.

Foundation
The Rotary Foundation transforms your gifts into service projects that change lives
both close to home and around the world.
During the past 100 years, the Foundation has spent $3 billion on life-changing,
sustainable projects.
With your help, we can make lives better in your community and around the world.
Why should I donate to The Rotary Foundation?
Your donation makes a difference to those who need our help most. More than 90
percent of donations go directly to supporting our service projects around the world.
How does The Rotary Foundation use donations?
Our 35,000 clubs carry out sustainable service projects that support our six causes.
With donations like yours, we’ve wiped out 99.9 percent of all polio cases. Your
donation also trains future peacemakers, supports clean water, and strengthens local
economies.
What impact can one donation have?
It can save a life. A child can be protected from polio with as little as 60 cents. Our
partners make your donation go even further. For every $1 Rotary commits to polio
eradication, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has committed $2.

Christmas for Exchange Student
The Rotary Club of Rockingham is currently hosting an exchange student from Germany. During
Monday’s combined meeting the subject of Christmas traditions and the exchange student arose. PDG
John Iriks has passed on the following message:
On Monday Sharyn mentioned that her family is not big on Christmas but Neele (from Germany) is.
Sharyn suggested maybe we could all add Neele to our Christmas card list to make her Christmas
special.

Personality of the Week Arch C. Klumph
KLUMPH, ARCHIBALD (ARCH) C. (6 June 1869-3 June 1951) successful businessman, musician, and pioneer in the Rotary Club movement, Klumph contributed to the economic and cultural life of the city. Arch was born in Conneautville, Pennsylvania, the son of Mortimer and Emma Cooper Klumph. Coming to Cleveland as a youth, he went to work for a small lumber company as a boy of 14. The company was the nucleus of the Cuyahoga Lumber Co. at 1848 Carter Rd. where Klumph served as president beginning in 1898; he became sole owner of the firm in 1912. Klumph organized the Security Savings & Loan Co. in 1916 and served as president for 35 years.
Arch C. Klumph founded the Rotary Club of Cleveland, Ohio, USA, in 1911 and was the 1916-17 Rotary president. He conceived the idea of a Rotary Club Foundation and convinced Rotarians to begin an endowment during WORLD WAR I. Addressing the 1917 convention in Atlanta, Georgia, he eloquently promoted the idea of "endowments for the purpose of doing good in the world."
That year, the Rotary Club of Kansas City, Missouri, made the first gift, of $26.50, to the fledgling fund. When the endowment had grown significant enough to require administrators to manage it, The Rotary Foundation was born, and Klumph was selected as one of its first trustees.
Klumph, a Shaker Heights resident, married Eva M. Weideman of Cleveland 23 July 1898 and they had 2 daughters, Mrs. Mary Watson and Mrs. Kathryn McGuire. He died in Cleveland and
was buried in LAKE VIEW CEMETERY.
21 Oct. 1992, when Rotary officials dedicated a granite monument to Klumph in Cleveland's lakefront park, Rotary clubs had raised $500 million to provide scholarships, food and medicine for the needy, begin a global program to inocculate children against polio as part of their worldwide program
The Arch Klumph Society was created in 2004, during Rotary International's centennial celebration, as a meaningful way to recognize the Foundation's highest-level donors. The society's first dinner was held the following year. Today, members' portraits, engraved in glass plaques, hang in the Arch Klumph Society Gallery at Rotary International World Headquarters.

Guest Speaker
Barry Samuels
City of Rockingham Mayor
Guest Speaker for the evening was Mr Barry Samuels, Mayor of the City of Rockingham. Barry
clearly has a very good relationship with the Rockingham Rotary Clubs, similar to our relationship
with Mayor Carol Adams. Barry gave us an update of events and plans for the City of Rockingham.
Currently there are approximately 140,000 people living in the Rockingham/Baldivis area. It has been
predicted that within the next 10-15 years this figure will increase to 200,000. Hence there is a strong
need for infrastructure. The average age in Rockingham at present is 34 years, indicating that many
younger families and individuals are choosing to settle here.
There is a relatively high unemployment rate of 10% in Rockingham, and the youth unemployment rate
is 17%. The Rockingham council is working closely with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry
(CCI) to address this issue. Following a recent trip to France by some significant individuals, there is a
strong hope and encouragement for some French companies to establish businesses in Rockingham.
Some other projects in Rockingham include:
Sports pavilion
Singletone sports and community centre
Baldivis South pavilion
Baldivis Youth Space
Rockport (online portal)
Rockingham Volunteer Centre
Management of Aqua Jetty in Warnbro
Three bin waste system
International Food Fest
New Year’s Eve fireworks at the foreshore
Australia Day
Romance in the Park
Seniors and Carers Expo
Rockingham Beach Cup (sponsors)
Mersey Point Jetty in Shoalwater
Baldivis District Sports Complex
Rockingham Beach foreshore update
Strategic plan
Significant Events:
Sports Star Awards
Pioneer lunch (for residents who have lived in the City of Rockingham for over 50 years)
Sculptures on the beach
Visit from sister city in Japan
Queen’s baton relay for the 2018 Commonwealth Games
Local Government elections
The City of Rockingham is due to have a new Chief Executive Officer as the most recent one has just
resigned.
