THE ROTARY BULLETIN Issue 2012.03

Lindsay Hulm talked about the Hulm family’s arrival in Colac in Sept 1950. What should have been a simple excursion into business became very stressful as Lindsay’s father was badly injured by a

workplace accident. No Workcover in those days! At just 17 Lindsay accepted the huge responsibility and had a very quick and steep introduction to running a bakery. I must say I love Lindsay’s philosophical attitude. Not so common these days. Among many other skills he had to learn were to harness and handle the delivery horses....... and there were the massive amounts of wood that needed cutting EACH day for the ovens...!!! He spoke of the skill needed to build those specialist ovens and how they still exist at

Neville Beechy's Antiques. He met Margaret when she walked past his laneway and was made to wait until he turned 21 to marry her. They had 5 girls and one boy. Their youngest child was born when Lindsay was President of Rotary. So look out Glenn...!!! In time the bakeries boundaries and runs changed and Hulms eventually had to move to their current shop. It cost $35,000 to purchase and was an immediate success. It's still running but Lindsay has now retired.

We also had Graham Sutherland speaking his mind about the future of the local farming industry - and

reflecting on the dairy industry particularly. He didn't have any easy answers but many of us concurred that we do need to stop and think before purchasing cheap imported food products. I know that I always do. Just yesterday I paid 1 more for an Australian brand of tinned tomatoes. I always buy the local milk in the supermarket. But I think that Graham brought up a good point about having your own vegie

garden and fruit trees. It's what people used to do. We can all whack in some silverbeet, parsley, chives, mint, rhubarb, a lemon tree, garlic. Something - anything....!!! ( But that's one of my pet subjects) In the end Graham showed a philosophical attitude too. Life goes on doesn't it?

Setting Directions The President’s column

Share the Load

There I was on a freezing cold Gellibrand Saturday “Sharing the Load” by taking my turn on the Otway Football Club gate. Cold took on a whole new meaning as the early wintry sun gave way to the cold front rolling in. Wayne was there for a while sharing his company with me, before he had to go to work. Having experienced how cold it was, he returned with heated gel packs, his big fingerless gloves and “sunshine” in a can (Vitamin D spray) for me. How thoughtful, and just amazing the difference it made. One gel bag got stuffed in a pocket for me to lean on every now and then, and the other was hugged to my chest as I approached every car. I thought, you know, it is rather like being in hospital or very ill, where extreme conditions shift your parameters of what is normal, and your usual boundaries fall away. There I was looking like an old crone, and when they delivered me some lunch, I buried my face in the hot meat pie, never mind the tomato sauce spreading around my face, and didn’t even let the warm food go from one hand as I kept approaching every car for their money. Not quite the decorum I like to think I usually achieve. The pie and the hot coffee were a meal to die for!! Bliss!!

So to reflect on one of our Club Values:

Share the load:

Taking my turn on our Club’s committed footy gate roster- anyone who hasn’t had a go yet, might like to phone Ronice and offer

Wayne – with his company and bringing my survival pack Footy club member bringing me that treasured lunch Raising funds for Rotary in our community

We need to make sure we “Share the Load”:

with Teresa and send her plenty of material for The Bulletin. with your President by Directors getting active and motivating their committee members

to work to achieve our club goals with newly appointed Membership Chair Michael Harrison by all being committed to

increasing and retaining our membership. Look for member opportunities in our everyday life and make sure we take care of each other.
