I remember that as a young man Iused to listen to some of the soap boxorators who spoke at noon time and atfivethirty in the afternoon on the east-ern side of Madison Square Park inNew York. I think that every largepark in the United States has had itsera of soap box orators. There seems tocome a time in the life of most men andsome women when they must allow thesurging steam that has arisen withinthem from a boiling theory or postula-tion to escape or else they will explode.

I do not wonder that some newspaperscall their letter columns, “The SafetyValve’’ for it gives an outlet to those whomust express themselves publicly beforesomething more serious happens. Thesesoap box orations were safety valves fora good many.

 The principal theme of these speakerswas divided in two classes: those whoagitated freedom from capitalism, andthose who agitated freedom from or-thodox religions. The latter class inter-

ested me greatly. As I listened to one of these speakers thundering forth his rea-sons why man should free himself fromthe enslaving influences of religious doc-trines and why he should get away fromthe ball and chain and belief in a Godand why he should look upon himself asthe master of his whole life and the rulerof the world because this would bringhim greater fr eedom, happi ness, j oy and  peace and success, I used to step out of the crowd and get closer to the speakerand size him up from head to foot, andas I studied the ragged hat, the soiled

collar, the very poor clothing, the frayedtrousers and the broken down shoes andlooked at the unshaven face, the cruel,restless, haunted look in his eyes, andsaw what a truly miserable creature hewas, I could not help but wonderwhether the freedom he advocated wasworth while, if he was an example of the benefits derived from it. Most of those who were in the audience andwere enslaved by the horrible things hedescribed and were supposed to be un-happy and miserable in every way werebetter dressed, looked more cheerful andfar more inspiring than the speakers.

Even the one who wanted to be freeof the influence of capitalism and whoproclaimed himself of being free of suchinfluences for many years looked likeone who had been free of everything inlife, especially all its blessing, ever sincehe was born. I have talked to many of these seekers for soul freedom or free-dom of self and I have always foundthem shiftless, getting nowhere and not

VERY now and thenwe receive a letterfrom someone whosays that he has de-cided to discontinuefollowing any systemof teachings, any bookof guidance, or any or-ganization that offersto point out the path to

happiness. These persons invariably in-clude in their argument the thread wornand foolish statement that they wish tobe “free souls.’’

even knowing where they were going togo to if they wanted to start going.

 They reminded me of a cork that istaken out of a bottle where it has beenenslaved or limited or held within cer-tain bounds and suddenly cast upon the

surface of a great ocean. Surely nothingcould want greater freedom than that.It bobs up and down and goes hitherand thither as the waves or wind pushit. If it has any will power at all it can-not exert it because this would be limita-tion of freedom. So it just floats along.For one hour it is hurriedly movingnorthward and then for no good reasonat all except that the winds change itscourse, it hurriedly moves eastward. Italways looks as though it is going some-where but you know that it is not andthat it may be one year or a hundredyears on the open sea pushed and bat-tered, run over by great vessels, nibbledat by the fish and finally washed ashorein some out of the way place where itdies of loneliness, unsung and unknown.While it is in the water it is serving nouseful purpose, rendering no good toanyone, fulfilling no mission and of ab-solutely no value. Certainly it can con-stantly comfort itself with the thoughtthat it is absolutely "free.”

It is a notable fact that those who aremost happy and most successful belong

to something or someone. Associationand companionship are fundamental re-quisites for success in life. The momentyou try to separate yourself from Cos-mic dictation, Cosmic attunement, spir-

itual inspiration, and human associationyou no longer remain a human being buta muddle of earth’s elements developingan individual will power that is per-verted.

 There is no freedom that is essential

to our well being except a freedom fromthe censuring voice of conscience. It isfar better to be chained and bolted with-in an iron cell of a prison than to be likethe floating corks on the sea of life

 Your contact with humans, even of thelowest type found in prisons, will teachyou valuable lessons and help you toevolve and prepare you for another in-carnation. Complete freedom from evensuch benefits begets nothing to theacquirements of evolution.

Associate yourself with those whohave the highest ideals, with those whoare struggling upward and extending ahand to those who are beneath them andwho are also struggling. Become a partof the human brotherhood and do yourbit to encourage all the rest in the greatstruggle. Attune yourself Cosmicallyand in mundane with all of the activitiesof the universe so that you can sym-pathize with every living being and un-derstand their problems and be one withthem in the development of self master-ship. But remember that self mastershipdoes not bring isolation and separation

in its wake but association and com-panionship, and that he who is thegreatest master among them is one whoserves them the best and who loves themmost and is a part of them.

Is Individual Consciousness 

of Self Eternal?

IS THE PERSONAL “I" JUST A CONCEITED IDEA 

BELONGING TO THIS LIFE ONLY ?

 Three possibilities suggest themselvesas follows:

First: That man is only immortal inthe sense that the accumulated experi-ence of individuals survives only in therace or races of mankind. Experience,Knowledge, and all that shall in somefuture period build up a superman isbut handed from parents to their chil-dren, by the spoken word, the writtenword, and various other means. Thereis no such thing as soul and no suchthing as the immortality of individualconsciousness.

Second: Man has a soul that sur-vives death but it is just part of onegreat Soul and will lose its identity whenthis earth life is finished. It will be ab-sorbed back, as it were, into the greatspirit from which it came and WILLNEVER KNOW IT ONCE HADAN INDIVIDUAL EXISTENCE. The use of the personal pronoun wouldbe meaningless.

 Third: The idea of personal sur-vival after death with full remembranceof all our experiences while on earth, andthe possibility of recalling past experi-ences.

Between these three lines of thoughtor speculation there are many variationsand combinations, so many in fact, thatone’s brain is taxed to the utmost whentrying to place them all in some sort of order.

In thinking of these three possibilitieswe are up against but one importantpoint: DOES MAN ’S IN DIVIDUALCONSCIOUSNESS SURVIVEDEATH? Before attempting any an-swer let us examine another question. Isthe Scientist’s or Philosopher's conclu-sion most worthy of consideration? ByScientist I mean the popular acceptationof the word; and by Philosopher I meanthe independent thinker and dreamer.

Sir James Jeans, in his book ‘‘TheMysterious Unverse” says, respecting

the universe, “The question at issue isultimately one for philosophic dis-cussion, but before the philosophershave a right to speak, science ought firstto be asked to tell them all she can asto ascertained facts and provisionalhypotheses. Then and then only, maydiscussion pass legitimately into therealms of philosophy.”

Now to me, this is not correct, and Ishould suggest that the philosopher’smind penetrates far deeper into the Uni-

mortal.

UCH are the questionswhich run through mymind as I read the ar-ticles in the Press bywell known Scientistsand others on ‘‘LIFE.”

I am not thinkingonly of man's im-mortality but rather, inwhat way man is im

verse than that of the Scientist, andwhen it comes to a discussion on theplace of man in the universe and hispossible survival after death, then thescientist is entirely out of his elementand the very nature of his studies andresearches is a hindrance to a sound andlogical conclusion on the matter of thetrue nature of Man.

When the astronomer has discoveredthe nature and orbits of every star inthe heavens, when the mathematicianhas solved every problem in his sphereof studies, when the study of biology isexhausted, when matter has been tracedto its lowest forms, when each studentin his particular department of researchhas reached that point where he mustinevitably come up against the great

problem of LIFE and first causes, whenthe very elementals of that life havebeen discovered and studied, then, therestill remains the greatest problems andthe greatest mystery of all, and thatis, MAN ’S CONSCIOUSNE SS OFHIMSELF AND THE THINGSAROUND HIM.

 Yes, surely the greatest mystery of all, and a' mystery which probably hasno solution; we know that consciousnessis real, we know that this strange, ab-stract illusive thing exists, for without it

ALL scientific studies would be mean-ingless, in fact, they would not exist atall.

After millions of years of physicalevolution, after thousands of years of mental evolution, yet not exactly after,but with it all the time, there has beenthat strange growth, this wondrousthing called consciousness; and stillmore strange and subtle is the fact of self consciousness, that something bywhich I know myself, that something bywhich I identify myself. Strange, illu-

sive and weird and yet wonderful is thisthing which we call consciousness of one’s own identity.

I believe, that, this strange growth of SELF CONSCIOUSNESS IS TO BE

 THE VERY FLOWER OF WH ICHALL ELSE IS BUT THE ROOT,STEM AND BRANCHES. It is some-thing different from life which is in allthings. It is something which only manpossesses. It is over and above, distinctfrom, different, yet growing out of, allelse that is and has ever been. The first

cause, the germ of this mysterious thingis wrapt in a mystery so profound anddistant that the greatest scientist orphilosopher is not even beginning to un-derstand it. The study of Radiation,Vibrations, Protons and Electrons andall such things pales into insignificancewhen compared with the stupendousthought of this thing SELF CON-SCIOUSNESS.

 The psychologist can and does studythe working of the thing, he can tell youmany interesting things about it andhow it affects a person's life, but beyondthat he cannot go.

 To me it is the IT of life; it is thething which classifies and reasons aboutlife’s experiences, by induction and de-

duction. It is the thing which is Man inthe truest sense. This thing in theULTIMATE, it is the CROWN andreason for man’s existence. ALL elseexists only that this thing may come tofull fruition. All else is but the scaffold-ing by which this thing is built up. It isthe thing which St. John saw and com-prehended and he called it:

“THE NEW NAME WHICHNO MAN KNOWETH SAVE HE

 THAT RECEIVETH IT.”

 THE N EW HEAVEN AND THE

NEW EARTH, THE COSMICCONSCIOUSNESS, is the millions of individual consciousness uniting in oneharmonious whole. THIS IS MAN IN

 THE GENERIC SENSE.DOES THIS THING SURVIVE

DEATH?

A thousand times yes. Death is butan experience to the individual con-sciousness and does not destroy one jotof the strange and wonderful thingIdentity.

Is it conceited and vain to think so of humanity? No, a thousand times NO,for this marvelous, unique and profoundthing called Self Consciousness, IS

 THE VERY GOD OF LIFE ITSELF.IT IS IT. IT IS IT IN MAN IFESTA -

 TION and it must of necessity be eter-nal and INFINITE.

 The scaffolding of this thing is noteternal; matter will not remain forever.

 The five physical senses are but part of this scaffolding and will not remain for-ever. The sense of sin, the sense of in- g

 justice, pain and sickness, poverty, wars,hate, jealousy and all kindred experi-ences are also part of the scaffoldingand will be utterly destroyed when thisthing SELF CONSCIOUSNESS isstrong enough to stand alone.

In the near future I can see a sharpdivision of thought on this subject of individual survival; on the one handthose who hold the belief as stated inthe beginning of this article as possibili-ties Nos. 1and 2, and on the other handthose who believe the idea of individualsurvival as stated in possibility No. 3,which, of course, is the very essence of the Spiritualists’ teaching.

Regarding the Spiritualists, I do agreethat phenomena does occur but I do notbelieve that it is what they think it is;

however, this opens up such a largefield of speculation that it must be leftto be dealt with in an article by itself.

It would appear then, to me, that thefirst two possibilities are unreasonableand unthinkable; and the third has beengrossly misunderstood by most Chris-tians and particularly by the Spirit-ualists.

 The course of events immediatelyafter death depends very largely uponhow far this individual consciousnesshas been developed. Where the de-velopment is very weak then certainlylife after death is but little more thana sleep and waiting time until the oppor-tunity shall arise for further experiences—more scaffolding in or on which theSUPE R STRUCTURE shall rise alittle higher.

 To those who have as yet developedno visible signs of the SUPERSTRU CTURE (Self Consciousness)then life for them after death is for atime just a blank.

Where this strange thing which is ITis well developed, then life after death

is a glorious consciousness of one’s

attunement with the Infinite. Moreoversuch individualities can see something of the nature and objects of the sufferingsand trials of those they have left behindand K NOWING THEY DO NOTGRIEVE.

 The combined whole of this marvel-ous thing Self Consciousness is notconfined to the sphere after death butstretches away to Eternity both back-wards and forwards. Death is but ashadow between two great fields of activity; and even this shadow no longerexists where men and women becomeconscious of the oneness and continuityof life.

In the first chapters of the book of Genesis we read of “The Tree of L ife,’’in St. John’s Revelation we read of the

fruits of “The Tree of Life.”“And he showed me a pure river

of water of life, clear as crystal,proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the midstof the street of it, and on either sideof the river was there the TREEOF LIFE, which bore twelve man-ner of fruits, and yielded her fruitevery month; and the leaves of thetree were for the healing of thenations.” THE TREE OF LIFE is but little

more than the scaffolding. THEFRUITS OF THE TREE is MAN’SSELF CON SCIOUSNESS.

Some day I shall know even as I amknown and I shall know myself as oneof the individualized fruits of the TREEand I shall be in my predestined placeand I shall be consciously fulfilling mypredestined part in the whole greatscheme of things as planned and de-signed by THE GREAT ARCHI-

 TECT OF THE UN IVERSE.Fear of death? NO! A thousand

times NO.

Four Keys To WisdomTO KNOW, TO DARE, TO WILL, TO KEEP SILENT

H E SE words, inFrench, were writtenover the door of asanctum in Paris, where

Cagliostro, the greatRosicrucian mystic of the 18th century, heldhis meetings. Caglio-stro followed thesefour keys with the

most steadfast zeal. Some have said itwas through not keeping the last onethat caused him to be implicated in thefamous scandal of the diamond neck-lace. On the other hand, it was becauseCagliostro kept so vigorously to silence,to save others, that he permitted himself to appear culpable.

It is a well known fact among Rosicrucians that many of the greatestmasters have never gone out of theirway to defend themselves of falsecharges; they have even allowed them-selves to be persecuted, imprisoned, tor-tured, rather than give out knowledgethat could be perversely used for wrongpurposes. They have always refused to“give a sign,’’ to cater to vulgar curio-sity. They had remained silent, and tokeep silent is the most difficult virtue forany one to practice. To show off is a

purely human trait. If a man knowssomething not known to his friends ingeneral, he is only too eager to expoundon his superior knowledge. He fondlybelieves that what he knows springsfrom his own particular mind.

“Give not that which is holy to thedogs, neither cast your pearls before theswine, lest haply they trample them un-der their feet, and turn and rend you." True adepts always keep those words

in mind. But they use discretion.

 The majority often misunderstood theword discretion. Many believe being aRosicrucian student bars one from utter-ing a word to any nonmembers of theorder about Rosicrucian philosophy andthe teachings of AMORC. That israther absurd. Without spreading know-ledge, gleaned from the Cosmos, thewhole spirit of Rosicrucianism would befutile.

Being helpful to others seeking en-lightenment is a good thing. A Rosicru-cian student can truthfully say, “Suchand such a thing is quite possible. Ihave proved it to be so to my own sat-isfaction. You, too, may do the same,after a certain amount of study andpractice." A Rosicrucian can say this

and, on various occasions, prove hiswords by experiments—yet he wouldnever dream of expounding to an un-enlightened mind the methods usedby which almost miraculous manifesta-tions occur. To disclose secrets of theuniverse for them, would only causeharm.

 The Master Christ helped the multi-tude by stating that such and such athing could be made manifest, andproved all his statements by actual ex-periments. He showed the people thatseemingly supernatural acts could bemade ordinary events by adopting andapplying certain natural laws. To provethat the soul is the only real part of thehuman being, He raised the dead. Hewilled back the soul to its earthlyprison of flesh, to show that without itthe body perished. Thus death was re-vealed as nothing more frighteningthan transition—birth into a new life;the uplifting of the True Self to a higherexistence; a return of the soul to theGreat Source from whence it came.

Christ did not walk on the sea to re-veal what astonishing things He coulddo. He did it to show his disciples thatany one of them could, without fear, doexactly what he had done. Peterattempted to do so, but fear caught him

and he started to sink, until a touch fromthe Master saved him.

“Ye of little faith’’ was not spoken ina religious sense. Christ meant that al-though people K NOW things can bedone, very often they will not DARE.Without courage little can be accom-plished. To have faith in anything aman must first of all have faith in him-self. Faith means courage, daring.

Christ also proved that a man can dis-appear suddenly from sight, even in themidst of a crowd. He did this several

times during his preachings. He likewiseproved that while imprisoned in anearthly body the soul, the God in men,can get in close contact with the Cos-mos, writh the Source from whence allcomes.

 These things he expounded to themultitude, and proved by actual experi-ment—but never once did He ever re-veal to the unenlightened masses how  these things could be accomplished. Hesowed the seed. If anyone cared to seekenlightenment, it came. His words

stirred the minds of those eager for wis-dom. He knew that the Inner Selves of men and women, truly desiring wisdom,would seek him out later to learn howthey could achieve mastership. It wasfor such seekers that he openly said,“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek,and you shall find; knock, and it shallbe opened.”

A person eager for the divine know-ledge offered by Christ obtained it if hedared to follow his own inner convic-tions. But those who said, “Teacher, we

would see a sign from thee.’’ were neverenlightened. They were the doubters.And to them the Master remainedsilent; for He knew their own doubtwould always be a stumbling block toanything they would be likely to attemptin occult studies.

 There are many people today whobelieve all ought to be revealed to theminstantaneously, without the least studyor preparation on their part.

 To allow an unprepared mind to ex-periment with the vast powers of the

universe would be as foolish as to per-mit a person, uninstructed in science, todabble by himself in a chemical labora-tory. Not knowing any of the laws of chemistry, he’d soon discover he wasplaying with dangerous forces.

How may an unenlightened and un-prepared mind attain wisdom?

Eliphas Levi, the great French magi,said:

“In order to DARE we must K NOW;in order to WILL we must DARE; wemust WILL to possess empire, and toreign we must be SILENT.”

Knowing a thing to be a fact helps usvery little unless we put that knowledgeto use. To learn more about what weknow to be the truth, we must dare. Theman who seeks Light must first of all

free himself of all fear and all prejudice. Then, being fearless, he can open hismind to Truth. By willing he can accom-plish almost unbelievable things. Bykeeping silent he retains the Godgivenpowers that have been revealed to him.

 To Know, To Dare, To Will, ToKeep Silent. The four keys guard thesecret.

“Sail to the west and the east will befound,” was a statement ridiculed in the15th century. A few Rosicrucian mys-tics knew the truth of those words. The

world in general scoffed at such a wilddeclaration. At that period, people weretold by false teachers that the world wasflat and that the planets revolved aroundit. Though even thousands of yearsprevious to them, Rosicrucian mysticsknew that the earth was only one of many worlds and, with them, revolvedaround the sun.

Columbus heeded the statementgiven to him by an enlightened mind.Had he, like others, merely heard thefact and done nothing about it, hisname would never have become histori-cal. Columbus DARED! He knew anddared and with steadfast will followedhis own convictions and achieved hisgoal.

It is, of course, senseless to dare if you know nothing about what you areattempting to do. It is equally senselessto will if you don’t know in which direc-tion to use your will power.

A man who vainly considers himself daring by standing on his head on theedge of a skyscraper, and waving his

legs at all angles, is not only a nuisancebut a fool. He is not more aid to hu-manity than his brother adventurer whoperches himself on top of a flagstaff forseveral days, to show fellow creaturesthat a human being can put himself into

a very uncomfortable and unnecessaryposition!

Colonel Lindbergh proved himself very heroic by flying the Atlantic. Heknew, he dared, he willed—and won!Aviation was his one passion. For years,since a cadet, he studied all there was toknow about his work. Knowing, hedared to put his knowledge of pilotingan airplane into use, to prove to man-kind that they could do more with avia-tion than had until then been attempted.Had Lindbergh had a weak will he may

never have crossed the ocean. But withhis knowledge and daring and will, hisgreat plan was put into motion and pro-duced results that have become history.

I have often heard people say, “Itwould be hopeless for me to study any-thing. I love music and would like toplay, but it would be too difficult forme."

 Those persons are the ones whowant good results, but are not eager tomake any effort to earn them. They arethe ones to be caught with those glow-

ing advertisements one often comesacross in magazines. “Learn to play thepiano in ten easy lessons and shock yourfriends.’’ Any sensible person knows

that several years, at least, must be givento music in order to know anythingabout it and play presentably.

Great mysteries and astonishing sys-tems promising mastership in this andthat, for a trifling sum, are often adver-

tized for the benefit of mankind—that isto say, for the benefit of that portion of mankind who does the advertising! Likethe speedy mastership of music, all suchofferings turn out dead sea fruit—veryappetizing to read (as advertised) butdry gray ashes when put into use!

Wisdom opens her many rooms of wonders only one by one. Worthwhilethings can only be mastered slowly,gradually. The unprepared mind, seek-ing Light, must, like a child, be coached.If a man knows the thing he desires toobtain is good and worthwhile, let him  dare to follow his own inner convictions.Putting his will to his knowledge anddaring he can obtain anything, even tobecoming master of wonderful secrets.

A Rosicrucian adept will never be an“egotist.” He will never “perform” if the curious demand a sign. But to thesoul eager for Light and Wisdom hewill always be willing to reveal the way. Then, treading the Path of Wisdom,the neophyte learns that the four keysto wisdom are:

HE old adage of “wherethere is smoke there

$ must be fire’’ is applic-able to metaphysics.Many of the irrational,illogical exercises andpractices held or per-formed under the guiseof being a method of metaphysics are based

on some proper principle which, havingbeen repeated time after time, has be-come distorted in its presentation andweird in practice. As fantastic as someof the tales of mythology are, chrono-logically they have been discovered tobe based upon some true incident in his-

tory. However, the repetition of the re-lating of the incident caused it to be-come distorted until there seems to belittle in common between the myth andthe original incident.

 There are two distinct classes of stu-dents interested in metaphysics. One isthe student who is a true lover of know-ledge, who derives a sense of soul satis-faction from pondering over a problemof life, and applying the principles of a philosophy to the solution of thatproblem. To that student it is indeed a

pleasure to unravel nature's most pro-found problems. That type of person isnot interested in large gatherings, inpublic lectures. He is not interested inattending private classes or seances;neither is he interested in learning of the great demonstrations or accomplish-ments of Avatars of the past or of thepresent, nor is he interested in pheno-mena for the sake of phenomena alone.He cherishes nothing better than to bealone in the privacy of his Temple, his

home perhaps. There with himself, hispersonal concept of God, and knowledge based upon his own study and

research, to explore the universe and itsmysteries in his own way.

He seeks no aggrandizement; he isnot interested in expounding his find-ings to the rest of the world, nor doeshe believe that he alone is right in hisprocesses of thinking, and that all otherswho do not think as he does are wrongin their interpretations. Incidentally, thistype of student of metaphysics is in theminority, and is one that all true schoolsof higher thought are endeavoring todevelop. The majority of the self

asserted metaphysical students may bedivided into two classifications:

First, the phenomena seeker; second,the personality worshipper. There is anelement in human nature that is both avirtue, and a detriment, and that is thatman is always seeking the mysterious,the weird, the unknown, that which hecannot fully comprehend. It has beenthis compelling force to satisfy his in-herent curiosity that has compelled manto progress from the lowest stages of evolution where he was comparable with

other mammals to that type of beingwhich we recognize as the highest livingform on this plane today. He was notcontent with an understanding of thosethings around him in his immediate en-vironment, but always sought to piercethe veil beyond; to push away theclouds of misunderstanding that ap-peared on the horizon; this has causedhim to climb on and upward.

 The detriment of this compellingforce is that it causes many merely to

attempt to please their curiosity withoutany desire to take advantage of theknowledge that they gain in their ex-periences. In other words, there arethose who like to be aweinspired, or

impressed with some mystical demon-stration. As soon as the thing is ex-plained to them, and they find that whatthey thought was a complex problem of life is not complex at all, but is a simplemanifestation of some fundamental lawwhich they could not quite comprehend,and the complexity was due to theirreasoning, they lose interest in it, andthey seem to say, “If I can understandthe condition, it cannot be very import-ant.” These persons go on in life andseek something else that appeals to themystery element of their nature.

 These persons are merely phenomenaseekers; they are seeking demonstra-tions and are not interested in how thelaw works, or why it works, but theymerely want to see the results. Thosepersons will attend all sorts of meetings,seances, and lectures to have demonstra-tions performed for them. They do notwant to understand how it is brought  about because if it is explained to themit loses its mysterious appeal. Thosepersons enjoy mysterious banjo playing,

table tapping, knocking on doors; itthrills them, but they are not sufficientlyinterested to investigate the phenomenain order to even see whether it is falseor true, or why it exists at all. Needlessto say, those persons receive nothingbut entertainment out of any form of metaphysics or occultism; they are neverable to help themselves, and they arenever able to demonstrate anything intheir own lives. They are merely ableto recite to you how Mr. soanso,Brother soandso, or Professor soan

so was able to produce all sorts of weird,fascinating, and appealing demonstra-tions, and how they thoroughly enjoyedit, but they cannot explain to you howit was done, nor are they able to repeatthe demonstrations. These personswould never retire to their own roomwith books, lectures, charts and dia-grams, paper and pencil, and devote twohours of deep study and thinking to thesolution of any one of the demonstra-

tions that they had ever seen. Theymerely want their senses appealed to. Itis like the public's interest in magicians.

 The magician frankly tells them what heis doing on the vaudeville stage is clever

trickery, and he is to be complimentedon the manner in which he deceives thesenses of the people as a means of en-tertainment. The public knows it istrickery, and likes to be deceived. Thereis not one of that majority who wouldbe the slightest bit interested in devotingan hour of study to the scientific explan-ation of the deception of the senses.

 They are not students; they are pheno-mena seekers. They do not wish know-ledge, but merely the gratification of their senses.

 The phenomena seeker is also usuallya personality worshipper. He is one whodoes not like to exert his own mentality,or use his own processes of thinking; helikes to be pushed on, drawn by a magi-cal individual. He likes to tramp alongin the wake and glory of some promi-nent person. He likes this individual todo all the thinking and research, and allthe study that is to be done. And thepersonality worshipper enjoys followingin the light of this strong personality.He often believes that he, himself, is de-

veloping because he is being forciblylifted up to another plane of thinkingby a personality.. These personalitiesmany times are traveling lecturers, veryeloquent, and having a magnetic influ-ence. They take a certain metaphysicalproblem whether it deals with health,prosperity, peace of mind, or whatnot.

 Then they proceed to explain this prob-lem immediately to their audience or fol-lowers without any exercise of thoughton the part of their followers at all, andbecause the problem is explained totheir sati sfact i on the audi ence is apt to  believe that it has accomplished some-thing. They have no knowledge within;it is merely that which comes from with-out, and they tramp along until finallysome day this personality disappears—something happens—perhaps transition,death, and there they are, a vast major-ity, stumbling, lost; the light has goneout. Instead of having the knowledge of Cosmic principles in their own con-sciousness, principles residing within

their own beings, which could guidethem on and upward to greater know-ledge regardless of personalities, theycome to the realization that they weremerely following a false beacon on theoutside, and when that beacon went out

they were left in the dark.We must not speak too severely of 

this majority, however, because it isfrom this majority that the true studentsare developed. Sooner or later everyman and woman comes to realize thatlife is not like chaff in the wind, andthat they need not be blown hither andthither by circumstances, but that life islike a great checkerboard upon which aninfinite game is being played, and thatwe, like checkers, are being moved bysome infinite intelligence. Some of us

are jumped early in the game, and takenoff the board never to play again in thisgame; others are crowned, made kings,receive prosperity, fame. Others seemto merely remain stationary; it seems tobe their place to block the progress of not only themselves, but others. Theycome to realize that life is more thanmerely living; that life means a realiza-tion of our place in the Cosmic scheme.Whence we came, and where we go isas important to our peace of mind, andto our thorough happiness as the fact

that WE ARE, and these persons thenlook about for the things which willseem to answer these inherent questions.

 They are advised to attend some per-son’s meeting, to go to hear such andsuch a lecture, to read that unusual bookwhich deals with the accomplishments of some persons in past ages, or at thepresent, or they are satisfied to go towitness some great psychic demonstra-tions, to marvel with others at theapparent mindpower of another indi-vidual, and when they see this pheno-

mena, and witness these demonstrationsthey really believe that they are close tothat which they want, and the environ-ment seems pleasing to them. They feelthat at last they are on the path, untilwhen alone and faced with some adver

them helpless when faced with a per-sonal problem, and that a personal prob-lem must be met and conquered by theindividual, and not by anyone else, andthen they realize their selfdependencyand how absurd it is to be dependent

upon others, and to tramp along behindone individual regardless of what agreat personality he may be.

 Then this type of person begins tothink differently. He is not so much in-terested in the entertaining features of psychic demonstrations, but wants con-crete laws and principles. How did youdo it? What did you use? H ow can I  do it? —Those are the things which havea real lure for him. And that personthen becomes a real metaphysical stu-dent, and he learns to leave alone the

many absurdities, which were merelyleading him up blind paths, and it isthese absurdities in metaphysics whichhave no prominent place in the develop-ment spiritually, psychically, or mater-ially, of the individual, that we are go-ing to discuss.

 The first and perhaps the most com-mon is crystal gazing. It would seem tothe casual investigator who is not wellversed in metaphysics or occultism thatthe crystal is an essential to one’s de-velopment in that field, or at least to the

attainment of results. The popular asso-ciation of crystal gazing with occultismis due undoubtedly to the vaudeville en-tertainer who through his clever actgives the impression that most anythingcan be accomplished with the use of acrystal,—anything from the determina-tion of the age of one in the audienceto whom and when he is going to marry,or a complete character reading of theindividual. So mysteriously do they usethe crystal that it becomes a fetish, andmany students or those who are just be-ginners, Neophytes we might say, in the

study of occultism, really believe thatthe crystal is possessed with some in-herent, supernatural power, and thatwhen one uses the crystal he contactsthis power which influences him, andmakes astounding reflections of eventsfor him. And it would seem as thoughone must be possessed of a crystal at alltimes if he is to have the gates of psychic knowledge opened to him.

Now there is no more power investedin a crystal, nor does the crystal have

any more influence in directing you inyour psychic development than doesyour hand mirror at home. It is quitetrue that the masters and teachers in thepast used the crystal, but the manner inwhich they used it, and their under-

standing of the use of it, is exceedinglydifferent from its perverted use by popu-lar entertainers, and by the irrationaloccult and metaphysical student. It wasused by the masters of the past merelyas an aid to attain a complete conditionof concentration. Anyone who has everattempted to produce perfect concen-tration realizes how difficult that is. Per-fect psychic concentration means theelimination temporarily of the impres-sions of your objective senses. Youmust place yourself in a purely subjec-

tive state, and suspend temporarily theimpressions of your sight, hearing, feel-ing, tasting, etc.

In our modern, noisy metropolises,and even noisy small towns with our socalled conveniences such as automobiles,radios, player pianos, and whatnot, itis very difficult to eliminate impressionsof the senses. Even in the ancient daysthe mystics found it difficult to get intoa perfect state of concentration, so theyused the crystal for this reason. Sincethe crystal is absolutely clear, withoutany imperfections, one can look intently

into it without noticing any imperfec-tions, or anything that would distracthis attention, and prevent him from get-ting into a subjective state, and whilelooking into this void of the crystalgradually the sense of sight diminishesuntil the crystal becomes as a black cur-tain, and success in eliminating the senseof sight, and getting into a purely sub- jective state was accomplished.

 Thus, the impressions that the crystalgazer had did not take place or manifestin the crystal, but manifested in the sub-

 jective mind of the individual, in themental black screen, and at that pointthe crystal, as far as further advantagesare concerned, could be thrown out of the window; it had accomplished its use-fulness; it had helped the gazer to getinto a perfect state of concentration, anddevelopment from that point on had noconnection with the crystal, and thethings one saw were not being seen

through the physical eye, but throughthe psychic eye. It is this point whichconfuses the metaphysical student whouses the crystal. The results he receiveswhen he is in a subjective state, hewrongly associates with the crystal as

though those things were taking placewithin the crystal. If someone were toremove the crystal from the room at thattime, results would continue, so you canrealize that the crystal is merely an aidto help him to get into the proper subjec-tive condition.

When that condition is obtained, theexperiences which are taking place arenot material experiences that are visibleto the naked eye, nor are they takingplace in the quartz mineral before youwhich is called a crystal. There are

many who are able to attain perfect con-centration merely by the exercise of thewill, and who do not need a crystal, andit is much more satisfactory if you areable to develop the ability of eliminatingyour objective senses and placing your-self in a subjective state without the aidof any material device. In fact, a blackmirror will serve just as well as a crystal,if you do need any device to assist youto get into a subjective state. Anythingthat will help you to focus your atten-tion and eliminate your objective facul-

ties will serve the same purpose as acrystal, so do not glorify the crystal asbeing an instrument of supernaturalpower. T ry this out and prove it toyourself, and then cross off one of theidiosyncracies of misunderstood meta-physics.

 The next is automatic writing: Thisseems to hold some investigators of metaphysics and occultism spellbound;they feel as though they are subjected tosome power which is directing throughthem, and they fail to realize that this

power is none other than their own sub- jective mind. The principle of automaticwriting is this: The person relaxes com-fortably in a chair, and taking a penciland paper, resting his hand containingthe pencil lightly on the paper, and try-ing as much as he possibly can to keephis objective mind, or brain conscious-ness blank; in other words, thinking of nothing, and in a few moments the fore-arm and hand containing the pencil willbecome rigid, that is, the muscles therein

contract, and involuntarily the hand willproceed to write peculiar hieroglyphics,sometimes unintelligible, and other timeswhole sentences which can be read, andapparently make sense. This pheno-mena is usually interpreted in the sense

that some other personality either of this plane, or another plane, is com-municating through the being of the oneholding the pencil, and is endeavoringto convey a communication of some sort.

 The argument in favor of automaticwriting by those who do not even com-prehend the basic principles of psy-chology is that the messages they writeusually contain a description of scenesthat they cannot ever recall having seenor read about, that they seem entirelynew to them, and they believe it couldnot have come from their mind, but musthave come from some other mind. Per-sons have been so possessed with suchfalse belief in automatic writing thatthey have literally made themselvesslaves to this phenomena, and have re-fused to live their own lives, or exercisetheir own will until they received whatthey believed to be communications fromthose who had gone on before, or fromthose who dwelt on this plane in distantplaces. Psychopathic wards of manystate hospitals contain such persons.

Psychology explains automatic writ-ing in a very rational way. Only a veryfew out of the thousand impressionswhich your senses receive, and whichare conveyed to the consciousness of your brain, are held in your conscious-ness long enough for them to make animpression upon your subjective mind sothat you can recall them through theprocesses of memory. Fortunately, thetens of thousands of different sounds orwords, and hundreds of thousands of different things you see daily, do notimpress themselves upon your subjective

mind so that you can recall them, oryour process of thinking would becomeso involved, so complex, that thinkingwould be even more difficult to the aver-age person than it is at present. Forinstance: When you see a thing whenwalking down the street in the morning,unless you hold that picture in yourmind a fraction of a second, sufficientlylong enough for you to realize the thing

you saw, you can never remember theincident objectively, or recall it to yourmemory. It penetrates through your ob-

 jective consciousness without your beingaware of that impression, and registerson your subjective mind. Can you re-

member many outstanding things thatyou saw on your way to work yesterdaymorning? Perhaps you walked fiveblocks, and rode six blocks on somepublic conveyance, street car, train, etc.,and during your trip of perhaps thirtyfive minutes tens of thousands of im-pressions flashed by your eyes, but onlythose things that you held for a momentin your objective consciousness, andrealized you were seeing them, and ex-amined them a little more closely, orfocused your attention on them, becameimpressed upon the memory of yourconsciousness, and can be recalled atall. The other impressions were not heldlong enough for you to recall them, andyou do not even remember ever havingregistered on the subjective mind.

Now when you permit yourself to getinto a purely subjective state these im-pressions which were made on the sub- jective mind without your being awareof them release themselves into phrases,words, and descriptions of things, orscenes which you cannot recall objective-ly through the processes of your mem-ory, because when you did see them youdid not retain them long enough in yourobjective consciousness for you to re-member them. It would seem quite logicalto say, “I could never have seen this be-fore, or heard that statement before, be-cause if I did, I most certainly wouldhave remembered it.” But due to thefact that it did not impress itself on yourobjective memory, you are not able torecall having ever experienced the im-pression. Automatic writing merely isthe releasing of those storcdup impres-

sions in the subjective mind. Experi-ments in psychopathic wards haveproven this. Persons have released sug-gestions from the subjective mind of ex-periences they have never recalled ob-

 jectively which took place when theywere small children, almost infants, andwhich registered on the subjective mindand were verified by parents, but whichthe subject himself could absolutely not

identify as being true because they hadnever registered themselves on the memmory, but merely registered in the sub-

 jective consciousness. So beware of put-ting full reliance on automatic writingas the writing or communication of somedeparted spirit or some living per-sonality on this plane. Your messagesare most likely directed by your ownsubjective mind, and the fact that youcannot recall the experiences you writemeans nothing more than that you can-not recall all the impressions of yourdaily walk when you return at night, butonly those which lingered long enoughin your consciousness to enable you toremember them.

 The ouija board craze is merely auto-matic writing in another form, and

‘craze’ is quite an appropriate term. There are more persons who are underthe hallucination of the ouija board spellthan any other apparatus associatedwith occultism. The principles of theouija board are identical with those of automatic writing; it is merely permit-ting one’s subjective mind to involuntar-ily direct the writing of messages whichare impressions that are stored up inthe subjective mind. The subject is notconscious of having originally receivedthese impressions and thus if he does not

rationally reason the matter out, he isapt to think he is the subject of someinfinite power that is working throughhim.

 These forms of phenomena, as wesaid before, appeal to the phenomenaseeker merely because they are weird,and mysterious, but they are also dan-gerous. The real student, the realthinker who is not merely interested inresults, but wants to know the why andwherefor  soon fathoms them out andleaves them alone as leading to blind

paths, and as a preventative to attain-ment in the study of truth. The latest absurdity which is claiming

many adherents is mi rr or writ ing. Oneturns the light on the mirror and placesthe index finger of his right hand on themirror before him, and then closes hiseyes until the involuntary jerking of hisindex finger on the mirror indicates thatsome message is about to be written, andthe finger leaves a slight greasy impres-

sion on the face of the mirror from thenatural oil of the pores, and when themessage is completed he reads the crudeoutline, and accepts it as some messageof import that is being conveyed to him. The dangerous part of this is that he is

apt to put full reliance in such impres-sions, and live and abide by them, regu-lating his life by those false impressionswhich are merely dictations of his ownsubjective mind, or haphazard experi-ences in his daily life received throughimpressions of his senses, and it is aquick road to the unstability of mind.

It is unfortunate that a magazine to-day, claiming a leader in the introduc-tion of occult and metaphysical truths, and whose publishers proclaim theorganization of a national body of 

thinkers, founded this mirror writing asa unique system of psychic development. They state that it indicates the develop-ment of the student, (though anyone candoit). The results are dangerous and un-sound, and certainly far from being akinto the true principles of occultism. Youmust realize that every phenomenon thatoccurs in nature has a sensible andrational explanation for its occurrence,whether that phenomenon be lightning,rain, snow, blizzards, sun spots, or suneclipse. The only strange thing aboutnature’s phenomena is our crudeattempt to understand them. We like todrape these phenomena in the roles of fantastic rituals and rites. We have tothank science and true metaphysics fortheir presentation of nature's pheno-mena in a clear, simple light, in whichthey should be placed. When anyoneasks you to witness a demonstration un-der the guise of its being a marvelousrevelation of some psychic power, firstsay to that person, “I am willing to wit-ness a demonstration if I can be assuredthat the demonstration will be accom-

panied by a sane, rational, concrete ex-planation of how it was done.” Alsostate that you will not be interested indemonstrations made by others or theexplanation that, ‘‘persons in the pasthave known how they came about, butwe today cannot expect to know.” Sayyou are interested in demonstrationsonly when you know how they are pro-duced, and thoroughly understand the

law underlying the phenomena, and ex-plain that you are not interested in justthemanifestation of a law.

Let us introduce into metaphysics thesane, sound, goodreasoning that we ex-pect in our business and in our home,

and in our social life. Why is it thatthe average man and woman will reasona thing out from all angles, taking ad-vantage of their syllogistical reasoningin everyday affairs, but when they gointo the field and study of metaphysicsthey feel since they are dealing with aninfinite power they must not compre-

hend and understand it. They seem tothink anything is possible, anything mayhappen haphazardly without law ororder, or without understanding.

When you study mysticism, meta-physics or occultism, you are studying

Complexity Is Simplicity

E L IVE in a world of turmoil and entangle-ments and therefore,

unreality, for the basisof truth is simplicity—harmony. We mayknow truth or realityby its changelessnessand because it is theroot, but to reach it

many confusing threads, built by ex-panding and yet groping minds, need tobe followed to their source. At thesource or beginning lies the discovery of unity, the origin in oneness of all crea-tion. Few people have the mental capa-

city to trace the innumerable threads of adventure or error to their root. How-ever, the revealment of the “real'' in thismanner stands as a significant and start-ling fact in the greatest thought of modern times.

Einstein, realizing the eternal orderand harmony of the universe, was led bywonder and amazement to follow thedifferent threads of the earth's mani-fested forces, especially that of mag-netism, electricity, and gravitation, and

discover their root or oneness. Havingarrived from complexity to simplicity,the world's mind at large has declared

him ununderstandable. He has watchedin the “unknown,” beauty and wisdom,or art and science, play in intimate rela-tionship, but among the earthboundonly a few watch with him; to the resthe stands strongly silhouetted against afaroff sky, a lonely though illuminatedfigure.

“East is West and West is East,”once said Columbus, and as if with onedeep breath enlarged a small circle tohold two worlds. In the enlargement of the mind’s circle of thought, for all

man’s invention or past was once adream and his future waits veiled in theimagination, lies the solution of bafflingmysteries. The unread, unthinking mindhas never travelled. It moves inside it-self around and around, wrapping itself into superstition and unconscious of even that. The conception is not unlikethe amusing performance of the kittenwhich does not see into or beyond themystery of its own tail and misguidesits ambition to seek possession of some-

thing that is already its by nature, as itwhirls around the floor in pursuit of itsdesire, so limited, is its mental vision.

But occasionally someone enlarges hiswrorld and discovers the simplicity of that which was once a complexity. Long

ago disintegrated matter was proclaimedto be a molecule, the grouping of mole-cules formed recognizable matter. Laterthe molecule was divided into atoms andatoms into electrons. The latest editionof the Encyclopedia Britannica hasfound authoritative the reduction of theelectron into a wave. Probably Ein-stein’s wave! The innumerable branchesmerge into one —simplicity increases.

An ancient mystical brotherhooddreaming of perfection, has proclaimedfor centuries beauty, love, poetry, and

mysticism as "one reality." The compre-hension of love, poetry, and mysticismas beauty is simple enough, but toachieve this, the state of each must bepure and therein lies the riddle. Whatis pure love? What is pure poetry?—

 The purity seems to be the point whereall four meet in similarity and that is thegoal of study and research.

Recently in a public article a clergy-man made this statement: “The churchshould be the embodiment of all phasesof truth—religion, science and art, forthese three are one. The unknown

God of today, the God guessed at, isleading us into confusion.”

One of the five dominating principlesof Gandhi, the greatminded and holyone of India, is the principle of one re-ligion. Surely the basical truth must al-ways be the same and changeless, andtherefore the many religious branchesmust be demonstrations of error—justas the many pagan gods were createdto symbolize various forces when limitedconception was inadequate to realizeone God.

“I and the Father are one.”  Thustaught a great teacher, who has for thisstatement been both humanized anddeified; either set apart as one with Godor placed with all human beings as asegment of the Divine. For two thou-sand years, with this simple statementmillions of minds have struggled. Meta-physicians talk about the one mind, theuniversal mind. Probably Emerson whosaw in the “Oversoul” a merging, oroneness, of all souls was as near thetruth as anyone, and why not nearer? It

takes vision to span a great distance andsee the whole in order to draw a properrelationship. A sight that reaches farhas outgrown the significance of self,blood relatives, nationality, denomina-tion, and race. To him humanity lives

as intellect and emotion—a great labora-tory of evolution and devolution in ac-tion. Neither is he swayed nor ham-pered by prohibition or the moral ques-tion. For such as he, wars and worldcourts would be unnecessary and theirexpenditure a huge waste.

More and more minds are ponderingover this conception of  oneness, at thebeginning and the end, “the Alpha andthe Omega.’’ We read from the novelof an internationally known novelist:“For the little soul that cries aloud for

continued personal existence for itself and its beloved, there is no help. Forthe soul which knows itself no more asa unit, but as a part of the UniversalUnity of which the beloved also is apart, which feels within itself the throbof the Universal Life, for that soul thereis no death.”

Another author, equally wellknown,places his own perplexities in the mindof a character: “He felt quite definitelythat no one in the world could feel oreven think alone. And then there was

the notion, that if one tried to thinkwith the mind without taking the bodyinto account, one got all balled up. Trueconscious life built itself up like a pyra-mid. First the body and the mind of abeloved one must come into one’s think-ing and feeling and then, in some mysticway, the bodies and minds of all theother people in the world must come in,must come sweeping in like a great mind—or something of that sort."

Could a mind be more clearly orsimply defined as something growing,expanding, permeating all matter andcombining as one universal power?

 To the “spiritualistic” minded whoare interested in this significance of one-ness, Conan Doyle’s first message fromthe other world in which he remarksabout the unity of the life beyond, sug-gesting the eliminating of the small fam-ily circle group by expansion into an allinclusive circle, might prove enlighten-ing.

In every field of thought we find thetrim figureone like a beacon of illumina-

tion, bursting rays through mancreateddarkness.

However, coming down to the pointof everyday life the confusion and thecomplexity of the roads of error mustnot be underestimated. Who is to de-

cide, fairly and definitely, for instance,the question whether or not SinclairLewis of all present day writers mostdeserved the Nobel prize? If he did not,then the scale for the evaluation of literature has been unbalanced and willconfuse the judgment of future literaryhistory until the discovery of somechangeless fundamentals.

And there are numerous other en-tanglements: Must a woman, becauseshe is biologically so equipped, bearchildren, or is it her privilege to dosomething else with all those years of 

life? Which is greater, the woman whohas given her whole life (we are notconcerned with halves here) to childrenor the one who has given it to art orsome other line of selfexpression?

Is Lindbergh greater because heachieved his goal than the men whodied on the road to achievement? Arethe “dead” of the World W ar greaterthan those who survived? And yet what-ever the truth is, it exists and remainsthe same no matter what the conscious judgment or knowledge, but so long as itis unrevealed, error and its attributesand consequences reign.

In case our mental apparatus loomsyet clear and unconfused by the ques-tions presented thus far, let us take an-other thought close to us all and strik-ingly simple. Let us assume that evenour evaluation of beauty is unsound. If,for example, we were accustomed tonice, clean, entirely hairless humanheads, would not a beautiful marcelled,

and perfumed head of hair be a dis-figurement? Taking an unprejudicedand broad point of view, which one isthe most beautiful? Anyway in the mak-ing of a life neither one has, it wouldseem, any importance, eliminating the

prejudice of a small world, and the hair-less one surely would seem to be themost desirable from the point of view of sanitation and economy. And yet howmany of us would willingly assume andlive this truth? And could it not proveto be an insurmountable and engulfinghandicap?

Let’s try our reasonnig powers alittle further. Modern psychology, stillmerged in ignorance, is attempting torevolutionize human habits and rules of behavior. It waves a warning flag atinhibitions of one’s desires, but what

about the inhibition of the efficiency of one’s willpower, the Chief Executive orthe governing force of the mind, whilefacilitating the desires? For is not willan evolutionary product of the controlof desires? And will not freed desirelead to excesses and the consummationof Will? The “unknown gods lead usinto confusion.” Truth leads to oneness,  simplicity. There is a cause for reflec-tion on where and what is truth. Thediscovery of truth reveals harmony,unity; its perversion results in pain, dis-ease, and confusion. We in our maddesi re to taste al l lest we die i nex per t  enced, gulp breathlessly the innumerablebaits of error, and dance repeatedly thenarrow endless circle of human experi-ence, until at the finish we find our sighttoo worn and dense to pierce the wayto the truth of life’s purpose which tomost of us like the smile of the ancientSphinx of Gizeh, remains a secret.

My Personal ExperiencesSOME UNUSUAL PSYCHIC ADVENTURES OF A STARTLING

Number 3—THE WITCH

ANY years ago while liv-ing in New York City, Ireceived a very cordialinvitation from our mem-bers on the Pacific Coastto pay an official visit toCalifornia and especiallyto visit the two or threelodges which we had in

the southern part of that state. Ifinally decided that I would make thetrip, providing I could get away frommy business affairs long enough to visitsome of the branches on the PacificCoast instead of just the two or threethat had united in the very fine invita-tion. I found I was able to get awayearly in the spring, and in the month of March, right after the Easter holiday,I started south from New York on thePennsylvania railroad in the midst of avery severe snow storm and very coldweather.

I was pleased as I travelled south-ward toward New Orleans to come

into milder weather and enjoyablescenery. After reaching New Orleans Idecided to stay over night in that cityin order to visit a branch of our workthere and the next morning I was takento the railroad station of the SouthernPacific lines to board my train goingwestward. I arrived at the station fullya half hour before the departure of thetrain and since there were a great manytourists, I decided to get aboard thetrain and sit on the rear observationplatform in order to secure and hold aseat. As the time drew near for the de-parture of the train I was impressedmore and more with the pitiful sight of the many persons who came to thattrain on crutches or on the arms of otherpersons, or in wheel chairs, and even onstretchers. It seemed to me that thetrain was going to become a hospitaltrain, and inquiry revealed that most of these ill persons were going to Arizonaor California, because of certain tuber-cular or other conditions which couldbe helped by the climate of those states.

I noted one case in particular of anold man who was brought by some uni-formed attendants on a stretcher andlifted into one of the cars and then leftalone. I had a compartment on the trainall to myself, and I noticed that this manhad been placed in a lower berth of thebody of the car among many other sickpersons, and that he was extremely sickand in a very pitiful condition, coughingextremely hard and with every indica-tion of great pain. As noon timeapproached and I looked out from mycompartment doorway at the end of thecar and saw these many sick personsaround me, each trying to help the other,I felt that as a Rosicrucian I must goout among them and see what I coulddo. Surely, here was a Cosmic call, if ever there was one.

I noticed that there was one nurse inthe car accompanying one sick person,and that she had already donned heruniform and was busy in a professionalway. She had been engaged by one of the sick persons but all of the otherpatients in the car thought that she wasa nurse in employ of the railroad, andwere continually asking her for somehelp, and she attempted to politely in-form them that her services belongedexclusively to the one patient, althoughshe did make some suggestions and offer

some help to a few of the sick women.My attention was attracted first of all

to the old man to whom I have referred.He was at least sixty years of age andlooked much older. There was an airof culture and refinement about him, andin all of his sickness and pain he wasattempting to make himself look tidyand to restrain any annoyance that hemight be causing others, and I sat downbeside him to talk about his case. Hetold me that he was alone in the world,that his wife and children had passed

on some years ago, and that throughbusiness reversals due to his bad healthhe had to finally accept the hospitalityof the county poor house. He had en-tered that place with all of his savingsamounting to several hundred dollars,which he turned over to the organiza-tion for his care, but a few months afterbeing placed in the home, his tuberculartrouble developed to such a degree thatthey decided that he would have to go

to some hospital, or if he wished to doso could go to one of the semicharitableplaces in Arizona. The purse of moneythat he had given to the institutionwould pay for his carfare to Arizona,and for his care for a little while, andso the attendants at the institution hadplaced him aboard the train and hadsaid goodbye to him, and he was on hisway, alone, sick, hopeless, and dejected.He was much worse off than anyoneelse on the train because most of theothers had someone with them, eithermother or father, husband or wife, andnone of them were quite as ill or as oldas he. As I looked at his watering eyesand the trembling hands, I could nothelp but think of my own father, welland strong back in New York, and of others who were dear to me, and no

older than he, and yet in perfect health,and I felt a special interest in him.

I, therefore, offered to let him havemy compartment in exchange for hislower berth, because in my compartmenthe could lie comfortably all day in a bedand have an electric fan, and other spe-cial facilities, and I could also be withhim and treat him. I began that verynoontime by getting him some appro-priate food and then giving him treat-ments according to our principles everyhour of the afternoon and evening, and

finally at 8:00 o’clock in the evening Isaw him tucked into bed for the nightwhile I slept outside in a berth. I didnot hear him cough during the nighteven when the train was standing still,and early in the morning I went to hisroom and found him much brighter thanhe had been the day before, and he con-fessed to me that he had slept longerand better than for many a night.

For two days I kept up the treatmentsand the nourishing food, especially giv-ing him some delicacies that tempted hisappetite along with other foods thatwere helpful during such treatments asI was giving to him. I felt that the Cos-mic was using me as a channel for thetransmission of stronger treatments thanI had ever noticed passing through mein any previous case, and I was de-lighted. When we reached a station inArizona where he had to change cars, Iassisted in having him taken out on tothe platform and engaged a taxi cab to

transfer him, for he was now able to situp and to walk a little, and did not needto be carried on a stretcher. I madearrangements with a representative of the railroad company to see that certain

things were carried out and planned toget in touch with the institution wherehe was going to see that he was giventhe proper food, for I planned to carryon the treatments for many weeks, be-lieving that he would recover and be-come strong enough to go back to NewOrleans.

As. I shook hands with the old manand the tears ran down his cheeks in anattempt to express his appreciation, hepromised to write to me or have some-body write to me once a week letting meknow how he was and he gave me asmall ring from his hand to keep as atoken. It was a silver band upon whichthere were some faint markings either of a decorative or symbolical nature, whichI could not decipher in want of a mag-nifying glass. He frankly told me it wasnot a costly thing, and that he was onlygiving it to me as a keepsake that Imight be mindful of him. I placed itupon my little finger, and then shookhands with him again and his lastwords were, “The only benediction thatI can give in return for what you have

done is this, may God bless she wholoves you the most.” I saw the taxi cabgo away from the station and I went onmy way in the train, helping the othersas much as I could, having the satisfac-tion of seeing some hemorrhagesstopped, and some terrible coughingmodified, and other direct benefits of Cosmic healing. I arrived in Los An-geles in due time and after a day or twoof official activity with our organizationin that city I wended my way towarda city further south. I am purposelyavoiding the name of this city becauseof the events that occurred, for I do notwant to attract undue attention to acertain home in a certain city.

I arrived in this city about 6:00 o’clockin the evening and was met by a com-mittee at the depot who escorted me toa hotel where an elaborate banquet hadbeen arranged for 7:00 o’clock in myhonor. After the banquet I was takenby the committee to a very large hall tomake a public address regarding our

work and I found there an assemblageof five or six hundred persons represent-ing the most intellectual and culturedpeople of the city.

At the close of the lecture the com-

mittee and a large number of the mem-bers accompanied me to the hotel againwhere we sat around and enjoyed asocial visit with ice cream and light re-freshments, for the weather was ex-tremely warm.

About 11:30 in the evening I admittedthat I was somewhat tired and wouldenjoy retiring for the night. The com-mittee asked me whether I preferred togo to a hotel or to a private home. Theyexplained that there was a private homeavailable where in a wing of the build-ing I would be all alone with the sameservice that a hotel would afford, andyet with the same privacy and perhapsa little more of the luxury of a privateestate, because the home was on theedge of a beautiful park. I felt instantlythat there was some preference in theminds of the committee and that theywould like to have me go to the privatehome, possibly because it was the homeof one of the officers or members of theorganization who had some desire forhaving me visit the home, and that Ishould be adding to their joy by accept-

ing the invitation. I have always pre-ferred being alone in hotels rather thanthe guest at anyone’s home, and espe-cially on official visits being located at ahotel in the heart of a city makes itpossible for all of the members to cometo see me and to arrange the interviewsin rapid succession and thereby contactas many members as possible in a shorttime.

I did not think to ask the name of thehost and hostess when I was taken tothe large home that was situated in themiddle of lawns that seemed to reach inall directions, and being late at night andbusy talking to those who were with mein the automobile, I did not notice thename or nature of the station throughwhich we drove, and was really un-aware of my location until I found my-self being escorted from the automobileup a long pathway to the main entranceof a very large house. After a few min-utes’ conversation with my host andhostess to whom I had been introduced

very early in the evening, along with ahundred others whose names I had alsoforgotten, I was taken through a numberof rooms to a wing of the house, andthen taken upstairs to a very attractiveoriental den room that seemed to occupy

the whole of the second floor of thewing. My host and hostess pointed outto me the fact that there were manywindows in the room overlooking thepark, that there was a private bath, andother conveniences, and that I would beabsolutely alone and undisturbed so faras the rest of the household was con-cerned. In fact, they said to me that Icould even go out in the morning or dur-ing the night without passing throughthe rest of the house by way of the win-dows and a balcony, which led to a

private stairway.After bidding them goodnight and

unpacking some of my satchels whichhad been brought to the room, I openedwide the windows and finally steppedout on to the balcony and was pleasedto note that this private balcony had astairway leading down into the yard,and that I really was quite separatedfrom the rest of the home.

 Turning my attention to the room it-self, I found that it was part of an atticthat had been turned into a den by apartial false ceiling decorated in oldfashioned beam style with some panell-ing in wood and soft tints on the plaster,and with oriental rugs and draperies,and very antique furniture. The roomfelt to me as though it was quite old inall of its fittings, and after a little ex-amination I decided that practicallyeverything in the room was an antiqueof some kind. The hostess had explainedto me that the room had been idle for ayear and that since they had joined ourorganization they had fitted it up in this

oriental style for a study room and as asanctum, but that it had not yet beenused for that purpose and that theywanted me to be the first one to spend anight in it and then perhaps in the morn-ing at sunrise give it my benediction andblessing, and thus make it appropriatefor use as a sanctum. I believe that thiswas the reason why they had invited meto their home and it was not the firsttime that I had been invited to a homefor a similar purpose.

Feeling that I was going to spend anight in very appropriate surroundingsand wondering whether some of thethings might not have come from Persiaor the Orient, especially the rugs anddraperies, I turned out the lights and

threw myself upon the bed, thoroughlytired and ready to attend to the treat-ments and midnight work of contactingvarious of our members with whom Iwas conducting experiments or whom Ihad promised to help.

As I was lying there in the darkgetting ready to attune myself with theCosmic, I thought first of all of the oldman and realized that it was time to givehim a treatment. Unconsciously I feltof the silver ring on my finger which hehad given to me and thought of how

this ring would help me to reach him aswell as reach the Cosmic, and sothroughout my treatment I held myfingers on the silver ring which waswedged quite tightly on the small fingerof my left hand. After giving him thetreatment, I answered the needs of per-haps a dozen others and then offered mypsychic consciousness to the Cosmic forwhatever services it might require of itand fell asleep.

About 2:00 o'clock in the morning Iwas awakened. I know the time because

in a few moments the chimes of an oldclock in the room struck twice. I wasawakened by a very definite sense of de-pressing and annoying vibrations in theroom. Very often when I sleep for thefirst night at a hotel or in some privateroom I am slightly annoyed by the dif-ference in vibrations, but I soon over-come these and become adjusted to theconditions. In this case, I could not sleepand I wondered whether I should getup or try to overcome the conditions.

After struggling for fully fifteen min-

utes and doing my utmost to go backto sleep, I got up and walked about theroom in the very faint moonlight thatcame in through the open windows andfinally went out to the balcony to admirethe deep shadows and silver spots of the moonlight and the effect of it uponthe lawns and trees around the house.

Having enjoyed the air for a few min-utes I returned to my bed and was aboutto force myself into sleep again when Inoticed there was a figure moving across

the room as though it had come fromthe bathroom near the foot of my bed.I saw that the door to the balcony wasstill closed and since it had a springlock upon it, it was impossible for any-

one from the outside to come in, unlesshe had a key, but I was sure also thatthis figure had emanated from the bath-room.

As I looked more closely, I saw it wasa transparent figure and I knew at oncethat it was a psychic visitor that I hadseen and not a human one. However,the figure was short and bent over, andseemed to be covered with some verylarge piece of material of a dark nature.As I watched the figure moving aboutas though busily engaged in attending tothings in various parts of the rooms, Inoticed that the room itself nowappeared quite different. I saw that thefurniture was different, although veryvague, and indefinite in its coloring anddetail. The large oldfashioned or an-tique dresser that had been in the roomat the foot of my bed earlier in the eve-ning was gone entirely, and in its placea very common looking bureau. I no-ticed also that there were two trunks of an old style like painted chests thatwere in one part of the room where achair had been before. Turning over on

my right side so that I could view thewhole room easily and watch what wasgoing on, I saw that the figure paid noattention to me, even when it turned inmy direction, and realized, of course,that a psychic figure would pay no atten-tion to a human being unless it had somemessage for it.

Finally, the figure went over to one of the trunks and lifted the lid and beganto take out some small things whichwere placed upon the floor. In thismoonlight I could see the outline of the

figure a little better, and noticed that itwas a figure of a woman very old Mathgray hair and a very hatchet shapedface with deep lines, and many wrinkles.I saw that she was stooped and quiteshaky in her actions. Her entire appear-ance gave me the impression of the pro-verbial witch, and I instantly classifiedher as such. Finally, she took fromsomewhere in the shadows of the rooma stand of some kind and brought it outinto the center of the open part of theroom and I could see that it was a stand

made of four pieces of iron fastened to-gether with bands of some kind, makinga thing that looked much like a tripod,except that it had four legs instead of three. It appeared to be about thirtysix

to forty inches high with a large bowlof metal on the top. Immediately, Ithought of the old iron stands that heldbowls in which flower pots could beplaced and then associating this thingwith the life of a witch I thought of anincense burner of some kind.

 Just at this point in my reasoning thefigure began to pour something from abottle into the bowl and then place someother objects in it, and in a few momentslighted this with a taper which she hadpreviously lighted with a match. As thechemical in the bowl began to burn

much like alcohol would burn, only withlonger flames of a yellow color insteadof blue, I saw that she was standing in aposition so that her face was held overthe flames and with her two hands ex-tended in front of her, while shechanted. It was a peculiar blood curd-ling sort of a chant and had a very de-pressing effect upon me in that darkroom. By the light of the flames I couldsee that her eyes were cruel in their ex-pression and that she was angrily chant-ing something. As I listened to it, an

inner psychic interpretation of herchanting seemed to come to me and itappeared that she was condemning orattempting to blaspheme somebody orsomething, and finally it occurred to methat she was practicing one of the an-cient witch arts of Black Magic or try-ing to do so, and that whatever she wasdoing was intended to be an evil curseupon someone. I almost laughed outloud as this thought came to me, becauseI know how foolish such a thing is andhow ineffectual such practices can be inreaching anyone, and doing anyone any

harm, but it dawned upon me that someof the old witches and many men andwomen of today are foolish enough tobelieve in such things and actually prac-tice such processes and so I thought Iwould wait and see the outcome of it.

Suddenly, the flames leaped high inthe air and there was a sort of an ex-plosion and the old woman’s figure fellback on the floor with a gasp and a cry,and a real loud thud. The flames in-stantly died down and before they were

entirely out, I leaped out of bed andrushed toward the figure on the floor,forgetting for a moment that I was wit-nessing only a psychic vision. However,I plunged myself into the vibrations of the etheric mass that had been acting in

front of me, and I was shocked untilmy nerves felt as though everyone of them had been impinged by sometweezers and caused them to ache as thenerve in a tooth aches. If I had beenshocked and my brain or heart piercedby a bullet, I could not have had agreater shock than at the moment Iplunged into those psychic vibrations,but the shock was over instantly and asit passed away, I saw the figure at myfeet fading out and in a moment therewas nothing more to be seen than thefaint outlines of the articles in the room

that were lighted by the moonlight. Turning on the electric light I found

that the room was undisturbed and thatthere was nothing unusual in any partof it. Realizing that it was a psychicexperience again like many others I hadhad in my life, I went out on the balconyfor a while and enjoyed the fresh airand then went back into the room andsat down at a table and wrote a letterto my wife. My watch showed it wasten minutes after three in the morning,and I dated my letter that hour and ex-plained to her exactly what I had seen just as I am explaining it' here. Thatletter was mailed early in the morningbefore breakfast because I arose earlyand went down the private stairway andwalked until I found a letter box and de-posited it so that it would be on its wayand be a record of this event and an ex-planation of my experiences in case anyother things should happen or someevent occur which might affect myhealth or even my life. Returning to thehouse an hour later for breakfast I hadthe pleasure of asking my host and

hostess about the room and its previoushistory. The story they told was entirelysatisfactory and gave a complete ex-planation of what I had witnessed.

T he E xplanation 

According to my host and hostess, thehouse they occupied had been ownedfor many years by a large family andthe children had married and left untilthere were parts of the house unused,and one day a woman asked permission.

to rent the wing of the house for herown private use. She claimed to be amidwife and some sort of a healer. Be-cause there was a private stairway,which could be used without goingthrough the house, it was considered

desirable to rent these rooms for a semi-business purpose as the old woman sug-gested. After she had been living therefor a while everyone in town becameacquainted with the fact that the womanwas advertising herself as a fortuneteller. She told fortunes by cards, bytea leaves, palmistry, astrology and anyor every method that anyone would sug-gest. In fact, no matter what anyonewent there to get and had the money topay for was delivered to them with someor no satisfaction. She also practiced alittle healing and claimed to make pre-parations of her own out of herbs andextracts from them. Persons who hadvisited her said that she had manychemical contrivances about the roomand that her room looked more like awitch’s den than anything else, and thatthe woman herself was old and wrinkledand had such peculiar vibrations thatshe frightened most people who stayedwith her an hour or more for her read-ings, because she invariably entered intowhat she called a trance state andchanted and made incantations and

often burned peculiar incense and otherchemicals in a large urn which she stoodin the middle of the room.

It appeared that after she had beenpracticing her art for several years thatsome sai lors called upon her one day forsome information and that one of themhad stolen from her some old jewelry orwhatnots and that she had reported itto the police and to others and hadsworn that she would get even and thatshe would destroy these sailors by herblack art. About this time, a man andwoman also visited her for advice. They

were an elderly couple and had been vis-iting in California and were on theirway home in the east. The advice thatthe woman gave them was so remark-able that they paid her well and thewitch claimed afterwards to the policewho tried to arrest her for obtainingmoney in this manner that she had notaccepted the money for her advice butfor a silver ring, which she had sold to

the gentleman and which was a goodluck ring because it had some sacredsymbols on it that would always bringhim good luck, and would keep him ingood health. The police continued to

persecute her, however, and she blamedall her trouble upon the two sailors thathad robbed her, and so she began tohold nightly sessions of Black Magicagainst them. On one occasion nearmidnight, everyone in the neighborhoodwas startled by hearing an explosionand seeing a bright light formation inthe windows of this upper story. Rush-ing up the stairway from the outside, thepeople of the neighborhood found theold witch on the floor lifeless with thehair around her face badly singed, herface badly blackened, and the old caul-dron on the fourlegged stand still hotand smoking from some fire that hadbeen burning in it. This was the endof her attempts at Black Magic. As isalways the case, the curse and the evilshe had been wishing upon someone elsehad destroyed her. The witch wasburied by the county in the cemetery forthe poor, for she had a little money leftamong her personal belongings and theplace was cleared out and the man andwoman who owned the house sold it,since they did not care to live there in

such vibrations, and with so large aplace. The present owners of it hadbought it after it had stood idle a yearbut had never fixed up the upper roomin that wing because they had no needfor it until they had joined our organ-ization, and then almost forgetting en-tirely the old story of the witch, theyhad planned to make it a den. The

witch, on the other hand, had evidentlywanted to tell her side of the story andexplain how her death had come about,and, therefore, her personality had re-turned to this room on an occasion when

it felt that someone would listen, andwatch, and understand. The interesting point, however, is one

that is surprising and will probablyastonish my readers. As I was toldabout the old witch and the man whohad received a silver ring from her, Ilooked to my hand to see if it might bethe ring that I had upon my little finger,and lo and behold, the little silver ringwas gone. It could not have slipped off because it was wedged on tightly and Isearched all over the room for it, and

had others help me. Two days later Ireceived a letter from the old man inArizona written by a nurse stating thaton the very night when this strangeoccurrence took place, he had a greatchange come over him for the better,and that he was now able to movearound on the lawns of the hospital,and that money was being sought to payhis way back to New Orleans where hecould live with some friend who wouldbe able to take care of him, since he wasnow improving in health. I sent somemoney to pay for his carfare back toNew Orleans and to this day I hearoccasionally from the old man who iswell, indeed. I have never forgotten hisbenediction and blessing upon the onewho loves me most of all and I havefelt that there was a protecting influencethat the Cosmic has seen fit to fulfil inexchange for what I tried to do for him.

N THIS rapidly movingage, the world mani fests  

keen interest in manythings, some construc-tive and unfortunatelysome destructive. Aboveall else the subject of healing seems to bepretty generally in the

minds of all thinking people today, eventhough it is approached from many dif-ferent points of view.

Speaking as a physician with thirtyyears of observation and experience todraw concl usions from, I have no hesi-tancy in saying that the results of 

many methods of healing are tremen-dously disappointing. There is a very real reason for the

many failures. Strange that we, in thisenlightened age, are after all so blind. The reason is basic, fundamental, andof the greatest importance to life andprosperity here as well as that life whichcomes after. Here it is. We are slow torecognize poor health, di sease and mis-fortune as evidence of broken naturallaw and refuse to admit that back of itall is the ignorance of or violation of Di-vine law.

 The Rosicrucian Brotherhood(AMORC) teaches that tlje whole uni-verse is regulated by system and orderand that to accomplish anything worth-while here, to be healthy, happy and

~ . . prosperous and to obtain Eternal lifeKosicructan for ^e future> system and order must

be the ruling love of our lives.How obvious this is to one studying

disease and its relation to such system

and order. No intelligent physician cancome to any other conclusion. If he

happens to be a materialist then he isnot a true physician and we had bestavoid him when looking for advice. Themore truly scientific a physician becomesthe more he realizes that outward evi-dence of disease is but the expression of Soul disorder, also that knowledge of the laws upon which order is basedcomes by attuning natural mind to Di-vine mind.

But we seem wedded to lives of self-ishness. At least there is an inborn de-sire or urge to live as we want to liveregardless; to think as we want to

think, going in the way of the least re-sistance. When at last pain or disabilityis upon us, we look for the easiest wayout and when temporarily relieved, alltoo soon forget the experience—until thenext time. There is always a next time,unless there has been a true healingbased upon the premise that disease isbut the expression of broken law forwhich we must pay.

 To one approaching this great andabsorbingly interesting subject with anunbiased mind and with the earnest de-sire to analyze the cause and effect of 

disease, he is led to the one great source,that of evil in some one of its manyforms. Evil is, of cour se, the inevitable  result of disorder. Possibly it is evil asto body care or evil against “Soul de-velopment” which some like to call causeof ill health and disease and with a defi-nite determination to eliminate evils of habit, of thought, of jealousy, selfish-ness and lust, and to force things out of

our lives which have a tendency to pro-duce such evils, will make short work of sickness.

I am quite certain that we are gradu-ally beginning to realize what Soul de-

velopment means in connection withgood health, prosperity and happinessand that without it, and only with a defi-nite program to obtain it, the humanbody and human mind, to say nothingof the internal man, are in a most un-happy state. The chaos that we see inthe world today is very definite evidenceof this truth.

We must be careful as to our programfor Soul development. Will power uponwhich so many rely, will not produceanything but doubtful results. So will“faith alone” fall short in producinghealing of the body or of the mind. Theremedy must go deeper, to the very Soulof man, the Essence of his being, of hislife here and of his life (ETERNAL) tocome.

How we do hate to face the music, toanalyze ourselves in the light of Cosmicrequirements. How hard to give up ourpet evils, which we have perhaps thoughttrivial and of no consequence. It is these“little’’ evils which are so dangerous toan orderly life. We must be willing,even anxious to face the facts no matter

how they hurt and then the RosicrucianBrotherhood (AMORC) offers the pro-gram for Soul rehabilitation and culture.Our minds must be concentrated on thecause of disease and not necessarily on

the disease itself, for such is merely anexpression, of no great importance initself, except to lead us to the Source.

We can be conscientious students of what is generally termed mind culture,of applied psychology and of “faithalone” and yet never reach that pointof Soul development which will enableus to master sickness and disease,whether of body, mind, finance or social.

On the other hand, the earnest stu-dent sees nothing but great joy and theutmost satisfaction in mastering the

 Truths concerning the relation between

Soul and body and in the effort to reachthat stage of Soul culture which willenable him to eliminate sickness andfailure from his life. At best we are butstudents, but with Souls afire to reachthe higher rounds of the Jacob’s ladder,and what wonderful satisfaction there isin knowing that we are on the way, al-though perhaps have yet a long way togo. Our salutation “Peace Profound” isexactly what we experience as we mounteven the lower rounds of this ladder.

HEN the average manspeaks of a person asbeing successful, whatdoes he mean? Why,of course he means thatthat person has acquired

wealth, and the thingsthat money will buy. Aman may be wealthy,

however, and yet be the veriest pauperif he has no real friends. Many a per-son on his deathbed has sadly muttered,“Ah, if I had only spent more time inmaking friends, and in keeping the onesI had, for with all my wealth I havemissed the greatest thing in life—friendship”.

 They say a real friend is one whoknows all about you and loves you justthe same. Such friendship is a pricelessgift, wafted from the Cosmic into ourhuman existence, to brighten our sordidmoments; and to let the sunshine of understanding dispel those clouds of 

 jealousy, doubt, and suspicion. Realfriendship must be genuine, for thesuperficial kind can quickly be detected—just as the cheap gold plating willsoon wear off a watch.

Doctors tell us that hatred will soonpoison the system, and that in five min-utes of intense hatred the breath throwsoff enough poison, if collected, to kill

forty men if it were injected into theirveins. On the other hand, LOVE isthe elixir of life, and this stream of Cosmic sympathy washes away thedross and leaves us forever young andbeautiful.

Our lives often seem a series of pain-ful experiences, vicissitudes and disap-pointment, but when we realize that wehave numerous friends who have like-wise had to take the bitter with the

sweet, and can give us understandingsympathy, it brightens our whole hori-zon. A recent speculator on the stockmarket, who had lost his last dime,laughingly said, “Well, I have lots of company, and many understanding

friends, so what of it?”Forgiveness is the price we must pay

for friendship. Any socalled friendwho cannot stand up under this acidtest is a false one—and a false friendis truly worse than a known enemy.Such a friend is, as Shakespeare said“feast won, fast lost”. We can meet ourenemies face to face, while a false friendstabs us in the back with his treach-ery. It is when we are down on ourluck that real friends shows their worth.

Friendship is a necessary urge of the

soul, and an inherent quality of ourbeing. It grows in the soil of sincerity,and is nourished with affection, under-standing and sympathy. Through thisspiritual process duality vanishes intoone, and two hearts and two soulsvibrate on the same plane of under-standing. As Dr. Arthur Bell explainedin one of his articles, we attain Happi-ness. Peace and Harmony through un-derstanding.

If we would gain real friendship letus be friendly. When we regard everytemper and mood, and are discordant

within ourselves, how can we radiatefriendship to others? Imagined inferior-ity or superiority will vanish if there isequality of heart, and the objectivemind will then lose its narrow outlook.Let us be happy that as Rosicrucianswe are taught our oneness with eachother and with the Cosmic, and canshift ourselves above the mundae af-fairs of commonplace existence to rap-turous Peace Profound.

T H E R O S I C R U C I A N O R D E R

 The Rosicrucian Order, having existed in all civilized lands for many centuries, is a nonsectarian, fraternal body of men and women devoted to the investigation, study, and practical

application of natural and spiritual laws. The purpose of the organization is to enable all to livein harmony with the creative, constructive, Cosmic forces for the attainment of health, happi-ness, and Peace.

 The Order is internationally known as AMORC (an abbreviation), and the AMORC inAmerica, and all other lands, constitutes the only form of Rosicrucian activities united in onebody having representation in the international Rosicrucian congresses.
