04The Rosebowl

The RosebowlThe Rosebowl in set to the north of the centre of Leeds, in West Yorkshire. Close to many nearby amenities, the site sits in the heart of the university district, just above the main retail area, Millenium Square and the Town Hall. Surrounded by busy main roads, the site suffers from noise pollution, while recieving heavy footfall from pedestrians and cyclists, as a through-route. Most frequently used by students, the current car park is also passed through by office workers, shoppers, and employees of the universities.

The new design aims to introduce a versatile, multi-functional green space which allows the site to become a user friendly stopping point, rather than a walkway. The site responds to issues of hydrology and provides noise barriers, creating a beautiful, tranquil park to be enjoyed by all.

The site is inspired by and embodies the key features of abstract expressionism. Vivid colours and beautiful planting

provide a motivating and aesthetically pleasing environment for site users, with mood lighting frosted glass walls bring the site to life at night. The high quality hard materials reflect the

originality and status of the Rose Bowl building,, offerinf a place to stimulat the mind or relax and unwind.

Modelling

Masterplan

Models were used to assist understanding how level changes and views in and out of the site would work. With a series of smaller, enclosed, intimate spaces, it was imperative that these areas did not become claustrophic. The model allowed an accurate assessment of how the site would look and feel as a whole, and therefore, how users might respond to it.
